AMERICAblog: It is a 50-state strategy

Bush is going to cancel the election. He will declare martial law and annoint himself President for Life!

    Or so I heard......
  • ZennButtKicker (tlhwraith) · 1 year ago
that aint gonna happen. You see it already where Bush/Cheney have lost a lot of influence and control. IMO the neocons have lost a lot of street cred with how they botched up the coupe attempt so far.

Learning about my racist idiot neighbors from when I campaigned for Kerry in 2004, I've decided to help Mr. Obama by campaigning for Republican Bob Barr for president. I just don't think my republican neighbors should settle on McCain if they don't like him.
  • Heather · 1 year ago
I have to say that this is not a bad idea. In previous election cycles I have always avoided confrontation with idiots but after the Kerry loss I feel a bigger personal responsibility to convince people. Two weeks ago I was talking to a woman who told me she could never vote for Senator Obama because of his middle name. When my instinct was to tell her she was a flipping idiot I tried to rationalize with her. A) Do you know McCain's middle name?" (She did not) B) Does his middle name make him better suited for the presidency? C) Since you don't know McCain's middle name it is obviously not very important to you

...and finally she says to me "Well I've never voted before and won't vote this time anyway".

A LOT hinges on whom Obama picks for vice president. I keep hearing people (outside of the blog) say that he should pick Hillary. I worry that if he does it would encourage a lot of disillusioned republicans to vote for McCain just to keep a Clinton out of the White House. I am thinking Edwards, Gore, or Caroline Kennedy might be good choices? Another thought that hit me was Richardson. He is bright, articulate, extremely experienced and successful with foreign policy, and could help secure the Latino vote. Thoughts?
  • Õ¿Õ · 1 year ago
    I wouldn't have a problem with Richardson.
  • red_dwarf · 1 year ago
I agree, Richardson would be an good choice, followed by Web for SOS and Edwards for AJ.
  • SarainKC · 1 year ago
I really love the idea of Hagel, with Edwards as AG, Biden as Sec of State, Kucinich as Labor Sec and Daschel and Clinton headng up HHS to get healthcare. Dodd might be cool as Energy Sec
  • Wisconsin Liberal · 1 year ago
I'd like to see John Edwards as Attorney General. I think he would be relentless in getting justice for all the criminal actions of the current administration.

Obama was never accepted by his white grandmother back then and his mother's side of the family. He learned to deal with it and just took it in stride. What other way? He's the best positioned for us to take it in stride as a people through adversity. They always seem to rise up in this country during times like this. That's what I intuit.
  • SarainKC · 1 year ago
Good grief, are you a troll temp? Barack's grandmother helped raise him. There was never a moment of rejection from her. Surely they gave you better talking points. Repugs have totally fallen apart. They can't even properly train their trolls anymore. LOL

I also wanted to mention something I have noticed about Obama (versus past and present candidates). I had a seminar to go to yesterday at the College I am attending part-time, and most of the folks in there were younger (20-25). We are getting awfully close to elections and I STILL hear a lot of excitement from the youth. NO candidate as long as I can remember ever generated the excitement and optimism that Obama has. Part of me worries about the older generation that still has a lot of racism, but if Obama can keep the energy flowing to the end of the campaign and get these young to vote, I think the election is in the bag.

cool, I guess that means we'll see more of him in Texas (which we're going to turn blue again!)

Any way Obama can use the phony emails claiming that you have won the lottery to highlight the false emails that he is a "secret: muslim?

Example: "Have you ever received an email claiming you won millions in some lottery & you needed to provide personal information to claim your prize? Did you send your personal info? Did you check the source of the email for the truth? Did you delete it?
Did you ever receive an email that claimed "Barack Obama was a muslim"? Did you believe it? Did you research it? Do you need to know the truth?

    Go to: http://snopes.com/politics/obama/muslim.asp

The snopes.com website is used to check the validity of emails.

what will the republicans call their new party after they disintegrate?
  • mirth · 1 year ago
Obama campaigning in all states is both the right thing to do and smart. As my christo-conservative neighbor, who mainlines Limbaugh, says, "I have to admit that your guy is a leader."

Richardson, btw, would bring a lot of negative baggage to the ticket. He's a poor choice for VP.

It's not just the youth voters who are excited. At 50+ I've never been more excited about a presidential candidate as I am about Obama. I keep hearing that all polititians are the same and Obama is no different and that once he's in office nothing will change. Normally I would agree, but not this time. My intuition tells me he is different and really wants to see the change in this country we all do. How long have we opined that we wish our representatives cared about the same things we do? Well, we have one at last. Too bad so many are stuck fast in the old paradigm and can't accept that it really is possible that Obama is different.
  • Õ¿Õ · 1 year ago
I didn't put any voodou on you so I don't know what's going on but it has nothing to do with me.

  • FunMe · 1 year ago
I think the 50 state strategy is the right way to go. I love it!

But I do hope Mr. Obama does not forget to reach out to latinos. Remember, McSame could get a good number of latinos to vote for him, and that could help him win certain states. We can't let that happen. So I hope the Obama campaign remembers to not take the latino vote for granted. There is work to done in that voting segment too.

"A successful, progressive Democratic Party has to be based on principles, not on voting for people who look like you. The principles can unify. Everyone needs health care. Everyone needs social justice. Everyone needs peace and prosperity. The general public, including independents and even some Republicans will vote for these principles. In a presidential contest based on principles, Senator John McCain has disadvantages."

I think we have to thank Howard Dean for the quiet building and cultivation of grass roots organizations he's been doing since he took over the DNC. That will provide Obama an on-the-ground base to work from going into the general election.

The thing about Obama that is so exciting to me is his leadership. He has the ability to look ahead, arrive at a sensible, logical strategy, and stick unwaveringly to it – that takes more than a little courage in today's political climate. He inspires people and brings out the best in them instead of the worst. He is intelligent and a great communicator. He has made mistakes, and no doubt will make a few more, but he learns from his mistakes and profits from them.

Way back at the beginning, when it became apparent that Obama and Clinton would be the two main candidates, I was dismayed and discouraged. It seemed to me that the “news” media had foisted two unelectable Democrats on us–I thought Senator Clinton's campaign would take the course it did, and I saw Obama as an inexperienced newcomer who lacked the chops to be a viable candidate. But he has certainly proven beyond any doubt that he has talent, executive/organizational ability, intelligence and charisma. The argument that he lacks experience is a bunch of hooey. Hillary Clinton actually had less experience in elected office than he did, and while John McCain's got plenty of experience groveling at George Bush’s feet and kissing his ass, not to mention prostituting himself to his lobbyist buds, that experience hardly recommends him to be president..

So today I’m feeling better about the Democratic party than I ever have.
  • OlderAndWiser · 1 year ago
Well, I'm feeling better now that Obama is the candidate for sure! Can't say I feel as positive about the Dems overall, considering their performance during the Bush regime; many still haven't developed a spine. And I'm a 67 year old former activist who was involved in organizing back in the late 60s and early 70s.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
Actually, I'm more hopeful for the House and Senate than I am for the White House.

I think Obama can win, but it will be tough.

I think the Dems are easily going to pick up Senate and House seats.

The Repub brand is next to worthless.

Wonderful--Obama will have to visit eastern NC and the mountain counties and those which have lost thousands of mfg jobs to convince those who live there why they're really out of work. Unfortunately, the jobs which pay the most and attract out of state job seekers are those in the financial sector (Charlotte) and IT (the Research Triangle area). And retraining for low level jobs for those who lost mfg jobs (as required by trade agreements) just don't cut it, because those jobs aren't to be found, and many laid off just can't afford to get those 2 yr degrees and have families to support. We have quite a few health career jobs, but most of those are low level and pay poorly, although for many young people, it's the route to go to get a 1 or 2 yr degree in health care right out of HS when they can't afford a 4 yr degree. Added to that, farms are being lost every year and production is down while the arrivistes create McMansion communities out of former farms.

While housing values are still relatively steady, they're buttressed by the multitude of huge houses (and even mansions) required by those making high salaries. The number of foreclosures among the middle and working classes are still ongoing and growing.

Don't believe all you read on the financial pages about NC.
  • Indigo · 1 year ago
I'm hopeful Obama will revisit Florida even though I'm doubtful he can carry Florida. It's just nice to have him here occasionally, he has an energizing presence, even local Republicans kinda like him. "Oh, he's likeable enough, he just don't have no experience is all," they say.
  • okojo · 1 year ago
Obama shouldn't have a 50 State strategy. I would probably aim for a 10 state strategy. Obama has to win PA, and OH. States he should campaign hard should be VA and NC. If things go well, I would even go to GA. I would leave the rest of the South and TX to McCain. The other places are NM, CO and NV. He shouldn't even go up past PA to the Northeast, given that will be a wrap for Obama, and I think he will even win NH.

Midwest, try MO, keep WI in check, and campaign in IN so it will cause McCain to worry and put resources in Indiana.

I am pretty sure McCain will pick Crist as his VP, which will make FL difficult to win for Obama, he should go there to make McCain and the Republicans sweat if the poll numbers don't look good.
Obama will win IL, NY, CA, New England with the question of NH, upper midwest. He Needs Ohio and PA to win the Presidency, and Either MO, VA, NC, or CO, NM and WVA to have a comfortable win.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
    I don't see a McCain/Crist ticket.

McCrazy still hasn't secured his base and Crist won't do that for him.

  • iggy · 1 year ago
Nope. 50 states. The problem with conceding states is that you concede not only the Presidential vote, but the Congress, Senate and Governors, since if you don't campaign there, THEY won't win either. And the right-wing just keeps getting more and more entrenched. It's a PERMANENT concession, since if you don't go there now, you'll have a BIGGER hurdle there NEXT time - and using the same logic, won't campaign there next time, either. Ever. If they never see any Democrats, they will never vote for any Democrats.

It's time to stop trying to win elections by reading demographic tea leaves, and it's time to redraw the electoral map.

What the fuck ever.... there is no point in going to North Dakota, Wyoming and South Dakota, when states like North Carolina, VA and Ohio are much more electorally rich...

Unless you haven't been reading the news, the Dems are going to add to their majority in Congress, with or without Obama. Obama should go to other states to help other candidates like he did in 2004, when the election looks like a sure thing.

there is a finite amount of resources, The big targets should be Republican Senate seats in moderate states like Maine or the open seats in New Mexico, VA, etc.

To say that a place will never elect a dem, look who is governor of the Wyoming
