AMERICAblog: It's now way easier to post a comment on our blog

  • Steve · 1 year ago
Can I make the comment that I would date you in a hearbeat, John? If I lived in DC? Damn...smart AND cute.
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
Yes you may. Though Joe and Rob may feel left out (Chris is married, so he doesn't count).
  • Steve · 1 year ago
Joe is also a catch...not sure if I've seen Rob's photo.

Keep up the good work here. I'm usually 99% in agreement with you folks.
  • Steve · 1 year ago
And I agree with the other posters - this is my favorite blog, along with dailykos. I like the perspective here.
  • Alexander Englander · 1 year ago
I just wanted to say that I really enjoy reading your blog. It is the first thing I check in the morning when I wake up and the last thing I check before bed. I don't even waste a lot of time on the major network sites anymore. Thank you!
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
    Thanks :-)

Excellent article here! A progressive UCC Pastor writes about how Oklahoma, in the last election, proved we are "Dead wrong and proud of it"

  • Steve_in_CNJ · 1 year ago
comments were interesting too! i wanted to ask the UCC reverend how he felt about the UU church shooting in knoxville last july, but i didn't want to give anyone ideas.
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
After reading the KKKristian Republicans who went crazy over the good reverend's article, I decided to add my true story of the racist incident in the steam room at our local YMCA courtesy of a KKKristian Republican sore loser:

    http://www.okgazette.com/p/12809/a/2930/Default...

Its funny how outraged the conservative right gets when they are called out on their behavior. "They doth protest too much!"
  • Psyche · 1 year ago
Thanks for the good editorial link (and found your comment before you even posted that link). Don't think I've ever seen a comments section that validated the writer's views so clearly. Perhaps because rather than posting brief snarky replies, the commenters went on and on in all their clueless glory! If this is at all representative, wonder how a UCC minister (or church) survives in OK
  • Nzuixx · 1 year ago
Hi John, America Blog is my favorite blog and I have been an avid reader for almost 4 years. Thank you very much for everything especially for keeping us informed and keeping it real.

I want to use this opportunity also to thank you for all your work during the last election. I know President elect Obama won, but this is the time for us to go to work and help him achieve his goals and putting his policies in concreate action so that the average American like my family and I can feel the effect here on Main street in the Louisiana.

Thanks again and may the good Lord continue to give you strenght to inform us while also challenging us to the best in ourselves and our country.
  • Steve_in_CNJ · 1 year ago
does this let Kay in Maine and Gregory Lyons back in? they used to fill about 50% of the comment space!
  • ProgressiveTroll · 1 year ago
LOL! I was thinking about those two the other day. Thinking about some of the people on here that I haven't seen around for some time. I've made some good friends on this blog and I'm in and out, very busy at times. What ever happened to Smoke and Jen in SLC????
  • Topher · 1 year ago
Where is Smoke? Was thinking about him yesterday.....
  • Steve_in_CNJ · 1 year ago
smoke makes me think of flatulence for some reason. they both wafted away.
  • IdiotShrub · 1 year ago
Good idea, John. This is my "must read" blog everyday, and I've not commented here in a looong time, mainly because the whole process was so discouragingly cumbersome. Kudos for the change!
  • CharlotteDK · 1 year ago
    Thanks!

I'd also love to see a "general comments" ability. For instance, if you had not written this entry, I would have no way of asking you why "Gay Chubby Dating" and "Interracial Dating" and other sites have so prominently been advertising on this and other "left-leaning" sites. Is it really those sites that are advertising? Or is it another entity that buys advertising space for mirror websites, in order to scare away any curious republicans who may want to see what the "left-leaning" websites are all about?
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
There's a line at the very top of the blog giving you my email address :-)
  • EdNSted · 1 year ago
To be clear, I don't speak for John, but I have been involved in the purchase of advertising on many web sites. Most advertising on web sites these days is done via an advertising network. Let's take Google, since it is a prime example. When purchasing advertising on Google, I have many, many options. Indeed, I can directly indicate that I want my ad to run on Americablog. But I'm also able to choose certain demographics - i.e. age groups, income profiles, educational profiles, content profiles, gender, keyword phrases, etc.. So even though I may not explicitly say I want my ad to run on Americablog, it may end up displaying here simply because I have selected a matching profile or kayword.

Again, I don't speak for John, but most web sites today do not directly exercise a high degree of control over the ads that run on their sites. They simply make certain prominent locations on their site available to the ad network. The ad network handles everything from there. Ad networks are mostly legimate and above board. Nearly all ads on Americablog are exactly what they appear to be. Just folks trying to get your business. BTW, one small way you help to support the blogs you visit is to click on the ads here of products you are considering buying.
  • CharlotteDK · 1 year ago
What I meant to say was that I was beginning to suspect that republicans was doing some hostile placement of false, yet working ads that would be sure to turn off their base, on sites that they would not want them to read. It's not just here, it's also on huffpost and dailykos. And it started a few weeks before the election.

    Sorry I wasn't more clear.
  • noni · 1 year ago
I use to post more often here, but the ability to comment became too cumbersome. I'm giving this a try to see if something has changed. The line "You are NOT on the AMERICAblog home page click here to go there!" at the top of the page is disturbing making me think I'm not on the Americablog website and instead on some static page. Also the advertisement strewn in between the comments breaks continuity and leaves me wondering if it is part of the blog entry, but I understand the need for visibility of the advertisers.
  • GAnana · 1 year ago

Can you re-activate the comment counters on the main page? Disqus loads much slower for me than halo, so I like to choose a thread that has enough comments to make it worth the wait.
Love to all, you were my gateway blog, and still my fave.
And as long as youre taking suggestions...orchids and Cliff made Fridays even Friday-er!
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
The comment counters have never been de-activated. But you only see the number of comments when there are comments to be counted. Are you saying that at the top of this page, under the title of the post, it doesnt tell you how many comments this post has - right now?
  • maggiePA08 · 1 year ago
Once I click -make a comment- on the main page, the new page always gives the count, but I like knowing before I click, which was possible with Halo, and intermittently when you first changed to Disqus.
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
That's weird, it should be on the main page too. You do realize that when there are no comments it doesn't show a number. Are you scrolling down the home page and looking at old posts that still tell you no number?
  • maggiePA08 · 1 year ago
No numbers on homepage. Its just me? Thats awkward.

As a 42 year old mom who can only shake my head in awe as I watch my 12-year old navigate through the internet and sundry other electronic gizmos, THANK YOU for a quick tutorial. I'm an avid reader of the blogs but clueless about so much - what the hell is twitter? threads?

I want to add my thanks for all you do as well - before the election I was on the internet probably five hours each day (we don't have TV) and I get the bulk of my news from the net. Because of you and Daily Kos and MyDD and others, this past election cycle I gave more money to more candidates, volunteered more time with our county Dem party, and even found out that Obama was going to be in Reno in time to get up (with my daughter) at 5 in the morning on a Saturday to see him, which was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. You are the best - and, I truly believe, the reason that all the Republican smears didn't work this time.
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
LOL yeah I'm still trying to understand Twitter and the rest. ;-) Maybe we should do a weekly technology post, and ask others to help explain what things are. That's an interesting idea. Oh, and a "thread" is simply a long list of comments on a single topic. For example, all the comments on this page are a "comment thread" - meaning, a long list of related comments concerning one particular post - they're long down the page like a "thread." Get it? :-) Having said that, threaded comments, I think, are comments formatted the way we format them below. Meaning, when you respond to someone it indents your response. A new comments typed in the comment box is posted along the left margin. But if you hit reply under any specific comment, it will post the reply indented, such as my reply to you is. That's a threaded comment.
  • Keith · 1 year ago
    .

Wow, a Weekly Technology Post - THAT is a truly great idea - at least to me - I would absolutely drop by to read and comment on that concept. You better pick up on that – I’m like VG gal in that a weekly teaching session would be something that was of high value to me personally.

We changed after people spammed the blog with what were perceived as threats against Obama, that had to be reported to the Secret Service. We're still using the new comments service, a service that give us an infinite number of bans (the old service gave us 20, yes 20, bans). And we have a myriad of ways of banning folks that we did not have before. It helps, a lot.

Why not Mount a petition drive in Utah for an Amendment named "Family Protection Act".

You need a lawyer but the wording would go something like this:
I"(In order to preserve and protect the families of Utah, divorce, for any reason or cause, are hereby prohibited."

That ought to get 6he point across about interfering in other peoples rights.

  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
We changed after people posted what were perceived as threats against Obama, that had to be reported to the Secret Service. We're still using the new service, that give us an infinite number of bans (the old service gave us 20, yes 20, bans). And we have a myriad of ways of banning folks. It helps, a lot.

As for the new site, we're hoping to launch an entirely new site (revamped site), in the next month or so (knock on wood). I'm at the mercy of my tech guy, who is making last minute touches to the template. When he finishes, we launch.

But at the same time, I'm working with a number of other blogs on trying to create an entirely new blogging platform, open source, that we all can use to to take blogging to a new level. That will take a long time to finish, as all of this always does.

Joshmo – same goes for me too!

You know, tensions and emotions were running sky-high back then. Nobody is to blame for whatever happened. And I don’t really know – all I knew was something happened around here and some folks got pissed off and left.

Hmmm… that sounds like what persons do that attend fundy churches. Get pissed a leave. Not something sensitive, perceptive, intellectually-minded persons would do – surely not.

Hey – my wish is that the old crew that hung out here would get over themselves and start coming around!!!

  • Keith · 1 year ago
    .

    John,

    Thank you.

May I return your nice gesture regarding the easier to post feature by offering my personal experience over the years with ABlog as feedback:

It has been so long that your site has been on my daily “must visit” list I can’t even really recall when I first started lurking around here. 2000 maybe?

Actually, it was the first blog I every visited, and the first blog I ever commented.

Many many evenings I would scan the comments late into the night. And after checking out lots of other Blogs, this site was the first I placed on my Favorites List.

I learned to follow the lives of the regulars, got to know all their personalities, etc, but from the beginning the MAIN reason I hung out here, in my opinion, it was THE PLACE for the BEST political news, opinions, and inside insights. At the height of my visiting I was on here 6-8 times a day.

About a year ago I started to drift away. I now swing by maybe once a day to check the crews headline take on the political landscape.

I will not go into all the reasons that I rarely visit here anymore, and NEVER read the comments, but I just want to say this easier to post feature is really welcome by me.

Just for the record and for general analysis and feedback to you personally, I am straight.

The ONLY reason I bring this up is this: I hung out here for six months before I figured out the place is kind of a gay site. Hell – I don’t even know how to categorize how you portray this site – and I really don’t care. The point I’m clumsily trying to make is this...

The political discussions and the personalities of the long time bloggers that used to hang here are why I enjoyed and valued this site. I hope the fact that I “didn’t get it” says something about the quality of conversations, info, and community that I experienced – and the reality that I didn’t pick up on the gay thing and never got a “clue” for six months says something I hope. And when I did finally figure it out - it really mattered not to me.

I’m not sure what all this says – I hope that comes off as a compliment – it was meant as one!

I look forward to visiting more often and reading the comments again.

    .

Thanks, that's actually very interesting and useful feedback. When you work online for a living, as I have in various permutations since 1995, it's extremely difficult to know how you're doing, what works, what doesn't, what folks like, what they don't, other than in a very uber way looking at overall traffic, overall numbers of people joining your email list, etc. But it doesn't really tell you if they're happy people, or what they like passionately, dislike passionately, suggestions for making things even better, etc. So this kind of feedback helps. Oh, and that's funny the way you describe the blog. Andy Towle at TowleRoad describes his site as a "blog with homosexual tendencies." I think we'd be the same. In the straight world we might even be "bi-curious" - subtly gay from time to time :-) But overall my goal was to have a straight-up, no pun intended, US politics blog, with an occasional secret passion for going after the religious right and defending the gays :-)
  • Keith · 1 year ago
    .

Hey, thanks John for your feedback on my feedback.

More FYI – I grew up as a teen in a VERY fundamentalist Nazi-style church [early 1960s] my parents attended in Western PA. They openly taught gay hate from the pulpit.

It has been a lifelong journey out of that geographical, intellectual, and emotional mindset.

That said, you might be able to appreciate how far I have journeyed with this behind-the-scenes story…

About a year ago, my pastor at the very socially aware peace & justice fellowship [church] I attend and I went out to a little bar/pool hall for a couple of beers. We were sitting at the bar chatting for awhile, and he starts to seem nervous, then he asks if he can tell me “something.” I’m like – sure whatsup?

He says flat out I’m gay” – I say without a moment’s hesitation “So?”

I hope your community finds the acceptance and equality you all deserve.

And my apologies for how the straights of this world think.

I met a guy of Asian decent yesterday. We chatted for awhile. He was highly intelligent, and had unbelievable knowledge of history and current world events. Eventually I asked what country he had moved here from. He said South Viet Nam. I looked him in the eye and said “I am so sorry for what my country did to yours.” He said “forget about it’ – and laughed. We both ended up laughing at the sad state of human being’s in general.

Same deal – sorry for what has been dealt to you all.

Not sure why I wrote all that – just felt it needed saying…

Greetings from Canada. Long time reader, first-time commenter.

Let me use this new commenting privelege to thank all of you for saving the world. Sarah Palin can see Canada from her house too. No one ever mentioned that, but it scared the hell out of me.

    Why is thread showing me:

    "Showing 100 of 131 Comments"

    Am I missing something???
  • scottinsf · 1 year ago
At the very beginning of the comments you'll see a link that says 'show more comments'. That's where the rest of them are hiding.

I'm happy for the change as I always enjoyed the profusion of comments (some very short, often very fnny) which seemed to scale back dramatically when posting a comment became more complicated. In the case of comments on this blog, "more is better". thanx for the change.

eeep! is this an announcement of new functionality, or is this a targeted swipe at john 'i'm learning how to do a google' mccain?
  • SociologistTina · 1 year ago
Might as well make it easier for us to converse back and forth!

Isn't that what democracy is all about?

Perhaps it was you that changed things so that it's also much easier for me to "note" each post into Google Notebook. MUCH easier! Thanks!

It's been five years, I'm glad to see that the $20K/year involved in running the site has finally got functional site-native comments.

You've joined the blogosphere, John - welcome.

Im a long time lurker, since the past 2 presidential elections and before. First site i check in the morning. I dont watch the "tv media" for news, come to the the blogs you and Dailykos for real news, breaking news and commentary by real people living the real life. You watch TV and read the papers so I dont have to, just come here and i find the main points.

John and Chris really enjoy all your trips, its like a mini vacation, and i dont have to get on a plane for a long overseas trip.

Blogs are the future for information. Look forward to what comes next in blogville.

Thank you, John, for making it easier for this long-time lurker to come out. And thank you, and Joe and Chris, for making this the best source of information available.

    I love you guys!

    John,

I've been a fan for many years and want to thank you for motivating me to get involved in the major issues of the day. I took part in the march against Prop 8 last weekend thanks to you and it was a terrific experience. Keep up the good work!

Some excellent analysis in here today, particularly the cogent explanation as to why Hillary should be SOS.

Although I'll never forget her egregious comment about McCain and her being the only ones with the experience to be CinC, I'd like to think we're grown up enough not to let her overzealousness in the primaries make her ineligible to bring her formidable talents and the Clinton's legions of supporters into Obama's new political bigtop.

Of course, there will be a price to pay in soap opera antics from time to time, but surely the melodramas are worth accepting to have people of their exceptional acumen and intelligence working on our behalf after 8 long years of irrational gut-policies and divisiveness.
