AMERICAblog: It's time to pick a new name for Texas

  • liberaldemdave · 7 months ago
as a progressive democrat in a VERY conservative part of the state, i'm really starting to find the gross generalizations (especially here at americablog) about texans to be as offensive as the right wing's generalizations.

note to chris: houston/harris county is now a democratically voting city/county and will quite likely elect the first openly lesbian, partnered, adoptive parent to MAYOR. GOT THAT? HOUSTON. FOURTH LARGEST CITY IN THE US. LESBIAN MAYOR.
  • Mark217 · 7 months ago
Actually Austin is a nice place with sane and friendly people and a rich cultural scene. I was stationed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio and I loved it there. Houston and Dallas-Ft. Worth are awesome but the traffic sucks. But in our fantasy of secession, I am imagining that GLBT people like me, the non-Christians, people of color, non-English speakers, artists, writers, and people with any education beyond high school would all be deported under a leader like Rick Perry. This is meant to be poking fun at how ridiculous the idea of Texas secession is. We are not ragging on the many cool people in Texas.
  • liberaldemdave · 7 months ago
sure sounds like a lot of group think mass-generalization in the comments. aren't we better than "them"?
  • Mike · 7 months ago
    Amen.
  • liberaldemdave · 7 months ago
not to mention that EVERY urban center in the state is trending Democratic. There are a lot of "us" with real grassroots boots on the ground working to turn this state blue.

just because tom delay, rick perry and the bush clan claim texas as home doesn't make the whole state "teh stoopid".
  • elwing · 7 months ago
remember that when you bash alaska, folks. every state has its stupid, but most of us learned a long time ago to keep our yaps shut.
  • liberaldemdave · 7 months ago
good point! that's why i try to make my frame fit around the subject and not the whole landscape!

after 8 years of shrub, progressive texans are getting pretty sensitive.
  • Brian Stafford · 7 months ago
I totally agree. I'm pretty pround of the shifts we are making in Texas and especially Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio. Most of these people generalizing will be the first to whine if someone other than their "gurls" calls them a faggot.
  • liberaldemdave · 7 months ago
I came out in Dallas in the mid-'80's. at that time, the cops were still arresting gays and lesbians for holding hands on the sidewalks...in OUR neighborhood.

we've come a long way and have a long way to go, yet, but we're making huge strides.
  • hippysuperstar · 7 months ago
Please leave us Austinites out of this. Nobody here wants to secede. In fact if the rest of Texas does, can we just be part of California since all of California seems to be moving here anyway?
  • CosmoVanPelt · 7 months ago
As a former Austinite, I sympathize, but also want to point out that most of urban Texas voted Democratic in the last election. Dallas County was 57% for Obama, for instance. A lot of Texas thinks Perry is a an embarrassment (in which role he's continues in W's footsteps....)
  • cowboyneok · 7 months ago
Wow, we are going to have to have air drops and all sorts of stuff for our friends in Austin. Underground railroad for y'all?
  • Mark217 · 7 months ago
Follyland (capital, w/Bush Cheney as Dear Leader and Pope)
    Undermentalia (anti-science R & D area w/gov't torture facility)
Crazyopia (rec. area with tea-bagging theme waterpark)
Kookus (cultural-relig. area & race segregated housing)
Uneducatica (K-5 schools only w/creationism museum)

The combination of the five states could form a country, a region, or a province known collectively as F.U.C.K.U. Maybe we could turn it into a penal colony and dump our felons there. And Texans all are clamoring for a fence, so I think we could fence F.U.C.K.U. off from the U.S.A. (maybe a border fence combined with a mine field). Their useless unit of currency could be a "gop." The flag of F.U.C.K.U. could be an image of Jesus riding a dinosaur or an elephant.
  • DallasDem · 7 months ago
As a Texan................I find this really freakin' funny, especially the flag image.

The Texas Supreme Court could be renamed the F.U.C.K.U. Supreme Council, with judges wearing white robes (cone-shaped headpieces would be optional).

High-level administration and cabinet-level position nominees might be as follows:

    David Vitter: "Vice" President

Mitt Romney: Chief of Staff Up His Ass

John McCain: Department of Geriatrics & Lost Integrity

    Rush Limbaugh: Department of Miseducation

Sarah Palin: Department of Personal Commerce & Shopping

Glenn Beck: Department of Needs Help & Human Services

    Bobby Jindhal: Exorcistamental Protection Agency

Sean Hannity: Department of Lame Ass Defenses

Rudy Guliani: Veteran of Many Affairs Department

Newt Gingrich: Department of Treasured Hypocrisy

Tim Pawlenty: Department of Laboring Under the Misimpression That He's Actually Relevant

Michelle Bachman: Honorary Idiot of Bible Belt Village

Tom Delay: Ambastarddor to the U.N.

    The possibilities are endless........
  • daveysmart · 7 months ago
Since I'm big on specificity...how about:

Northeastern region (Capital: Dallas): State of Petrolia

Southeastern coastal region (Capital: Houston): Protectorate of New New Orleans

Southeastern Non-Contiguous inland region (Summer Capital: Austin, Winter Capital: San Antonio): Commonwealth of Gerrymandria

Northern Panhandle & Central Region (Capital: Lubbock): A.S.G.L.: Alliance of Sovereign Grazing Lands

Southwestern Counties Bordering Rio Grande (Capital: El Paso): Territory of Dobbsylvania

By my calculations, the Senatorial split would likely run 6 R, and 4 D.

With the addition of DC as the 55th state, that would give us 2 more D Senators, and everything's a wash!

If Texas secedes does that mean that Texans will then be declared illegal aliens?

We should move the fence tot he Oklahoman border if that is the case.

"The only good Texan is a dead Texan!"

Really? gee, that would make a great hand made sign at a teabagging party.
  • sobyrne4 · 7 months ago
Geez, I was sarcastically referring to the Texas anthem of "The only good Mexican is a dead Mexican!"

Sarcasm does not translate well in writing.

I love Texas, I love Texans! But if they want to secede then fine. Have at it!!!!
  • liberaldemdave · 7 months ago
i hear ya'... we're a very proud bunch of people. remember that tom delay and gov. good hair don't speak for the entire population...a small and declining margin of the population, at that.

that's the point i've been trying to get across.
  • CosmoVanPelt · 7 months ago
Well, given that a lot of Texans have Mexican ancestry (and Texas is not a white state -- look at the demo stats and projected population), that one (which I haven't heard anyone actually say, though I've lived in Texas most of my life), is probably not going to have a lot of resonance now or in the future. Unless you're talking to the hard-core racist subset of the crazy 18%....

"it is somewhat racist, elitist and classist to suggest that '...istan' should be the name of whatever new thing comes out of Texas...it's a slam against all of the Muslim world."

*Actually, the suffix -stan comes from the old Persian/Farsi word meaning land, country, or place of. So it has little to do with Muslims at all, and more to do with your own misconception.

Speaking as one who also thinks that the Louisiana Purchase was a bad idea, I have nothing against balkanizing the state of Texas although I'd prefer returning the northern third of old Mexico, occupied by the US government since 1848, to Mexico.

That would include the states of Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and California as well as dribs and drabs of some others including Nevada and Utah.

Pity the Mormons who fled the United States and went to Mexico only to be invaded and occupied by the US Federal government.

    ---

I'm sure someone would offer up Jesustan... I'm confident there'd also be a group that wanted 'REAL AMERICA!' (the name should always be in caps and followed with an exclaimation mark).

I’ve got a great solution for those teabaggers who are against paying taxes of any kind and attended the tea bag parties on April 15th. If you agree to not receive social security under any circumstances, Medicare, unemployment benefits, welfare, food stamps, call 911 for police or fire assistance, and send your children to public schools. Then the government would no longer require you to pay taxes. This would take the burden off those local, state and federal governments who can’t afford to provide services to those people who aren’t willing to pay their fair share in taxes. We could start this little experiment in Texas where Governor Perry is threatening to secede from the US over paying high taxes. Let them have their own country where the all the anti tax conservatives could move there and run their little country the way they want. Including, no laws regarding guns. I wonder how long it would take before anarchy would reins supreme? It would be the ultimate reality show of conservatives eating their own. That’s one reality show I would enjoy watching!

Oh, and at the risk of being the fly in the ointment...it is somewhat racist, elitist and classist to suggest that "...istan" should be the name of whatever new thing comes out of Texas...it's a slam against all of the Muslim world. Just an observation.
  • phalamir · 7 months ago
all "stan" mean s is "land of". And it is a Central Asian thing, not a Muslim thing (notice the distinct lack of Stans in the core Middle East). Besides which, most the Stanleys are named after the dominant ethic group of the nation (Uzbekistan, Turmenistan, Kazakhstan, etc), and since virtually everyone I have ever met thinks "Texan" _is_ an ethnic group, the use is apt.

Not intended as a snub. At was a sloppy contemporary reflection of another part of the world that like Texas, has seen fragmentation (or the potential for it) as a result of religious and or political strife. It matters not the cause or the specific politics. That was the only intent in my obviously ill-fated attempt at humor. I know. I know. Don't quit my day job.

Texas-bashing aside -- you all might want to acknowledge that the state is less red with each passing election, which is why Perry, DeLay and the rest of the crazies are doubling down on their usual asshattery.

That said, (and assuming the current electoral trend to blue is stopped) dividing Texas into 5 new states means 10 Senators out of 110. Quite a voting block when you add the other hard-core red states -- more than a simple majority... so be careful what you wish for.
