AMERICAblog: John McCain: “I am learning to get online myself, and I will have that down fairly soon, getting on myself"

It's a series of tubes. Tubes! Tubes! The internet is a series of tubes!

Clicking that little e icon, that's a tough one!
  • HelenaMontana · 1 year ago
It takes great technological expertise to double click the MS or Firefox icon, then type in www.barenakedtitties.com or foxnews.com, or drudgewhore.com or whatever. Asking a lot for the man who thinks he's fit to have command of the most sophisticated military in the world. One of these days, though, we'll drag that geezer kicking and screaming out of the 19th century.

I wouldn't hold it against elderly people who can't use a computer or find things on the internet. Beyond a certain age, many have difficulty learning new things, especially new technology. Fine! Those elderly can and do survive on what they are capable without computers and the internet. However, that bare minimum standard should not be applied to someone who wants to be the leader of the freeworld. My God, such a person has far more to learn than just some new technology. I hope they have a good grasp of foreign relations, economics, social values, self control, those special codes for the red button, etc. <Sigh!!!!!!> You get the feeling that McCain is still at the level of the dial-telephone and can't comprehend push button telephones. Do his helpers also have to show him where the restroom is everytime because he is no longer capable of learning the layout of the White House. The ability to use computers and the internet is vital to the leader of the free world and without the ability to do his own thorough research, I doubt anyone really is qualified in this day and age. Anyone who has the responsibility for the freeworld should be able to go way past the blogs to the professional journals and needs to be reading them to be an effective, knowledgeable leader. Then again, look at the current idiot-in-chief, has to have Condi to hand lead him to the bathroom at a G-8 meeting.

John McCain gives senior citizens a bad image...........unfortunately, a correct image in many cases as I can vouch for many folks my age who feel 'no need' for the internet and when I try to explain the wealth of information available at the click of a mouse, they look puzzled.........and they are actually the most misinformed/uninformed people I know and actually VERY BORING........
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
Oh, maybe, but I swear, the Internet should be taken away from Seniors like my parents.

Any kind of viral e-mail garbage they get they take as the Gospel truth.

Honestly, at least once a week I have to explain to them why something their distant cousin from Alabama sent is nothing but right-wing propaganda.

They figure if it's in print and it's sent from a relative, it must be true.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
    Come to think of it.

If any Obama people are watching this, you really should think about starting some kind of "Senior Keyboard Commandos" for Obama.

If you want to knock down the internet lies, seniors like my parents aren't going to seek out your Web site. You need other seniors e-mailing them with the truth.
  • blackwolf · 1 year ago
There's a great deal of truth in what you're saying. We have to move with technology--otherwise we lose contact with the world as it is at any given moment.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
Good, maybe he can go to factcheck.org and look up how many times he's been lying.
  • ndtovent · 1 year ago
Not to defend McCain (believe me, I'm not -- for ANYthing), but there are still a lot of seniors out there who never got online, are not computer literate, and have no desire to be. Computer technology and the internet are overwhelming to them. I kinda feel sorry for em (although not for mccain--It's really scary that he wants to be the leader of the free world and doesn't know how to send an email).
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
Agree, it's different for McCain than other seniors.

I mean, at least theoretically, THE GUY'S NOT SUPPOSED TO BE RETIRED!
  • blackwolf · 1 year ago
It's amazing! He're a a guy who wouldn't know how to open the damn "briefcase" in case of a major world catastrophe. You know the briefcase I'm talking about; it's the one that the president can operate from Air Force One. It's got all the codes and *hit.
  • blackwolf · 1 year ago
Same here! He's out of touch, and I think the Obama camp should push the "truth" to the limit.
  • unrepentant_expat · 1 year ago
This is the same imbecile who while in the Navy had a pronounced propensity to crash aircraft, the advanced technology of the day. I, for one, would stand far back from his learning curve. They call it the Straight Talk Express because whenever it was necessary to deviate from 'Remember the Maine' McCain's intended course, he ploughed straight into whatever obvious obstruction was there.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
    McCain's a nitwit.
  • gwpriester · 1 year ago
Oh those wild and crazy McCains!
  • lafingas · 1 year ago
My dad is going to be 85 on the 24th of this month, and he has his own PC, goes on line every day, sends pictures through email, checks out a number of blogs and streams movies from netflix. You can teach an old dog new tricks if they have a mind to learn!
  • mirth · 1 year ago
    Hi lafingas.

A curious mind, a desire to know and to be fully engaged in life, regardless our individual circumstances, aren't determined by age. I know several elderly people. They use the Web like your dad and in many more ways find personal fulfillment and community involvement.

    Kudos to your dad.
  • blackwolf · 1 year ago
Hey, he might even be on Adult Friendfinders:)
  • blackwolf · 1 year ago
Just joking, hats off to your dad and anyone who pushes forward in life.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
This is almost sad. He should not have tried to run again.

    2000 was it for him.

Instead of kissing up to Bush in the ensuing 8 years, then turning into a neocon/supply sider/fundie whore, he could have been a great senator.

He blew his chance by chasing the brass ring.
  • unrepentant_expat · 1 year ago
Personally, I feel he would have made great fertilizer in some rice paddy in Vietnam.
    I snark you not.
  • LunaStick · 1 year ago
Now that is what I call HARSH! :)
  • LunaStick · 1 year ago
This explains why McCain is so comfortable lying about his record and flip-flopping every day. He has no idea that everything he says and does is there for the world to see on the internet. He thinks he is getting away with it.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
    That's probably true.

Interestingly enough, I got the impression that Bill Clinton was operating in a similar media time warp.
  • LunaStick · 1 year ago
Bill Clinton's time occured before blogging became so big. He should have known better and "adjusted" his act as it were. I guess old habits like parsing are hard to break.
  • vkobaya · 1 year ago
While the internet existed for about 30-35 years, it was not very accessible until the advent of the world wide web, that is graphical interfacearound the middle of the 90s, after Clinton was elected. Not many used it. There were online services like CompuServe, Genie, AOL, etc. but they were rather geeky and although I joined CompuServe in 1992, I really wouldn't expect Clinton to bother. The technology was formidable, starting those very, very slow modems of that period.

As I mentioned in a previous message, I wouldn't hold it against the elderly who even today find computers and the internet too formidable, but have to have much higher standards for someone who is going to be the leader of the free world.

As for how difficult this technology is, I know a fellow who has an IQ of about 80, but runs his own for profit, pornographic website including doing all his own very sophisticated programming. Yeah, he is frequently stumped and has to ask others for help, but he isn't intimidated at all to do most of it himself. He isn't a kid either as he claims he is getting near 50, actually, though he just turned 48. Oh yeah, also his programming skills are self-taught. <g> If you doubt he has that low an IQ, he spells out words of more than a couple syllables a couple times when he is reading them to struggle to understand them.

As if Big Love Oboma is getting away with it either, I am very glad to see people waking up to the world were whatever the Dem speaks is not golden when he changes his tune two months latter is no longer working either.
  • Ben Dover · 1 year ago
Grampa McSame's tartlet's vast fortune allows him to hire people to turn on his pc and find Drudge.

Well that's certainly encouraging and I don't think it makes him too much of an elitist. Will McSame have a pc in each of their seven or eight homes or will he just have an aid carry a laptop for him?

I'm sure that as soon as he discovers internet porn he'll whip that mouse into shape.
  • blackwolf · 1 year ago
Yeah, and Bush "Googled" once or twice....&&&*^&! What in the hell is wrong witht his picture?
  • pcvirginiabeach · 1 year ago
Senate Committee on Armed Services - Ranking Minority Member
Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation - 2
Subcommittee on Aviation Operations Safety and Security - 2
Subcommittee on Consumer Affairs Insurance and Automotive Safety - 2
Subcommittee on Interstate Commerce Trade and Tourism - 2
Subcommittee on Science Technology and Innovation - 2
Subcommittee on Surface Transportation and Merchant Marine Infrastructure Safety and Security - 2

And he does not know how to use a computer- good god! What on earth has this guy been doing the last 15 years? Is there any possible way a person could hold the responsibilities listed above, and not at least email to move information and do the job.... NONE.

"Subcommittee on Science Technology and Innovation - 2"- Bwhahahahahaha! What a fraud.
  • unrepentant_expat · 1 year ago
His flight instructor could have told you that!
  • judybrowni · 1 year ago
My father is 85 and retired, abruptly, 20 years ago when it looked as though he'd be forced to learn how to use his own personal computer (and he was, at one point, literally a rocket scientist.)

He remained blissfully un-interneted, until he remarried to a younger (66) woman five or so years ago, but she largely runs the computer.

Yup, those old, stubborn geezers are old and stubborn. But McCain is what? nearly 20 years younger, and running for fucking president.
  • Busboy · 1 year ago
Would that be the "Judy brown eyes" that I know?
  • FatRat · 1 year ago
What McCain's first experience on the internet will look like! lol

Someone should take Grampa McSame to the grocery store so he can go ga-ga over those new fangled scanner things that so fascinated ol' #41.
  • DCinDC · 1 year ago
    Bush = McCain

McCain will be another president that will not understand the issues and be manipulated by underlings.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
Like Bush, only older and slower.
  • Busboy · 1 year ago
This is going to be one hell of an election. Did the supreme court uphold the McCain-Feingold part of the law that says you can't mention your candidate by 'name' 60 days before the election? Just askin......

What do Cindy and Gramps do on Saturday Night?

Do you ever get the feeling that she's checking out the help as he's still considering his next move?
  • Busboy · 1 year ago
Drink Bud and watch Obama explain away Rev Wright. Or, watch johnnymac explain why being a POW for 5 years can be counted as experience? Give us some guidance here; B_B...

Looks like steak and asparagus and red potatoes again. Later......

This guy wants to run America and he's stumped by his computer?

McBush was out performed by 893 classmates out of 899. No other questions need to be asked.
  • unrepentant_expat · 1 year ago
"At that point, Mrs. McCain, who had been intensely engaged with her BlackBerry, looked up and chastised her husband. “Meghan’s blog!” she said, reminding him of their daughter’s blog on his campaign Web site. “Meghan’s blog,” he said sheepishly."

Blog, blog it must be some kind of euphemism, he thought . He watched her fingering her Blackberry and wondered who else she might be fingering.
"You fucking blog", he shouted before stunned reporters.

McCain can't use a computer and wants intelligent design taught in schools but daddy fetishist cable news anchors act like he's a mainstream candidate
  • KISSman · 1 year ago
How f*cking hard is it?!? I mean, really...

Seriously, how much time does it take to learn to do if someone sets it all up for you? I don't even expect the guy to set up his firewall or his router (some aid will do that all for him), but to get on the internets and surf the tubes after someone sets it all up for you is as simple as turning on the power and double clicking Internet Explorer with the default home page on Google.

I mean, if he really needs this much f*cking help to get on the internets, I honestly question his intellectual capacity and his ability to grasp this issues of today. If you want to be a well-informed person, reading USA Today in the morning with your coffee ain't gonna cut it, McSame.

On top of that, the internets have been around for 15 years or so and conveniently this is the first time he is showing the slightest bit of interest?? Unbelievable.

My then 86 year old Grandfather was on his 'web tv' all the time and he loved it. He would send emails and look up recipes. He pretty much figured it out all on his own too.

Of course, when he found a website he liked and tried to tell me about it, I had to hear it as "YOU HAVE TO TYPE IN THE H-T-T-P, COLON, NOT A SEMI COLON, THEN THE BACKSLASH THINGIE TWICE, THEN THE WWW, THEN A DOT...." I'm sure you all can get the picture. Love him to death but hey, at least he was trying and at least he figured it out...and he wasn't trying to run a country.
  • hawkseye · 1 year ago
I am the same age as John McCain, and I have been doing e-mail since 1991 and using a computer for word processing since 1987.
I don't know what his problem is.
  • Ari Herzog · 1 year ago
The New York Times did not break this knowledge that McCain is an Internet dimwit. I first saw it in a politico.com video from before Super Tuesday. I linked to the video at the bottom of a blog post of mine on how the Internet is interminably tied to elections.
  • Hangtown Danile · 1 year ago
He will be getting on line soon.
As soon as he finds out that they have the internet on Computers now...
  • GrMtGirl · 1 year ago
Let's face it . . . McBush has been treated like a spoiled brat every since being released from a POW camp because his daddy was an Adminral. He has relied on this glory all of his life and has contributed little. Pretty thin qualifications for president.
  • nsr · 1 year ago
Yeah, I watch the internet all the time. One must keep up with all the latest newfangled gadgets. I hear they have this service where you can send your thoughts and ideas directly to the NSA.
