AMERICAblog: John McCain, Sarah Palin, and Rape Kits - A reader, his wife and kids do their own ad

  • OlderButWiser · 1 year ago
Good ad which should be played over and over, esp in Alaska, which has the highest rate of rape and incest in the US. I'm sure the governor's beliefs only encourge more of the same.
  • ydthin · 1 year ago
wow, I didn't know that. Good lord, what is going on up there in Alaska (or what isn't...) I am quite certain the republicans would have jumped on these stats from day one.
  • ydthin · 1 year ago
Wonderful. One has to wonder what is so hard about this, and why the Obama campaign can't do this.

When you combine this with the apparent unwillingness from McCain's camp to teach children about the danger of child predators, it would seem their campaign is pro-sexual assault/pro-predator. It's not a slogan dems would normally run with, but you can bet your boots they would. Willie Horton anyone?
  • naschkatzehussein · 1 year ago
Makes you wonder if McCain has a "good" history of tail hook conventions.
  • Nick_the_Dog · 1 year ago
Honest, truthful, and heartfelt ad. This family makes my tail wag. If I didn't love the old bastard I live with so much, I could be their dog.
  • sukabi1 · 1 year ago
    Very good ad.
  • Heather · 1 year ago
That gives me chills. Good for them! When will democrats seize this issue and run with it?
  • Liza · 1 year ago
Can we get this on TV? Somehow? This is powerful and using "real people" is the best way to do this.
  • sukabi1 · 1 year ago
John, do we have permission from the family to email this around???
  • shrrrr · 1 year ago
The fact that they produced it and placed it on the web gives you that permission. It's there for you to distribute.
  • sukabi1 · 1 year ago
I realize that, but was asking because there are a bunch of wingnuts that will more than likely try and track them down... If this starts getting emailed about, their exposure gets elevated...
  • ron071 · 1 year ago
Hiding the horror is not the way of a democratic society. Know the truth and then you will be free.

    WANT MORE PAIN ??????VOTE McSAME/PALIN!!!!!!!!
  • sukabi1 · 1 year ago
I wasn't advocating hiding anything, I was asking because if this particular video does "hit the big times" the family that put it out will be under an onslaught of pressure / attacks from the GOP and their mouthbreather keyboard commandos... I think the family should be aware of and protected from the likes of Malkin and her horde..
  • martha · 1 year ago
Just saw a goofy CNN talking head saying both sides are now getting down and dirty in the ads. Not true - but we can hope.
  • middlegirl · 1 year ago
Good start, we should see more of this. As a woman, this is one of the most disturbing issues. People outside the blogosphere haven't heard about the rape kits. Yesterday, at a voter registration with Obama volunteers, none of the women knew about this and they were visibly stunned.

I think the Obama campaign can't raise this issue but women's groups and private citizens should. I plan on calling NOW on monday to see if they could launch an ad. This could be a great 527 but I really believe it has to come from women. It would defuse the lame sexism meme if women were coming forth to express their deep concern. Of all the issues, this one could grab the attention of the media.
  • naschkatzehussein · 1 year ago
Since Biden was so active in fighting violence against women, I see nothing wrong with making a comparison between himself and the other vice presidential campaign. I don't know why the Obama campaign can't go there either because of sexism. Whites have fought for the civil rights of non-whites, straights alongside gays and lesbians, so why not decent men speaking up for women? They would be doing the opposite of denigrating them. But if Obama wants to stick to bread-and-butter issues, he seems willing now to have independent groups attack McCain on the so-called social issues. I suggested to Planned Parenthood that they do something on this topic because they did an excellent job on the sex education smear.
  • LLDEM · 1 year ago
I posted this to my facebook page. Everyone should. Great ad and compelling storytellers.
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 1 year ago
Expect this: How DARE that woman subject her own daughters to a discussion of sexual assault and rape! Just look at the fear and confusion in their innocent little faces! Haters of Governor Palin and that other guy, the POW?, HARM innocent little girls in their never-ending quest to destroy Sarah Palin (and that other guy).
  • ron071 · 1 year ago
Sarah Palin's short record is more than enough for even a half-wit to recognize. This lying , vicious, ignorant, and most extreme woman is totally unfit for high (or any) office. A $ 1,200 oil tax bribe ( at our expense in higher gas prices ) in Alaska does not qualifications make. Her ignorance of the world was clearly evident by her hiding from real press and public questioning and a pathetic appearance with " Charlie " Gibson.
  • AngelaChanning · 1 year ago
This ad is very well done. It touches all the main points. It is important to show one's daughters because they will be the ones bearing the burden if Roe V. Wade is overturned. It almost happened while Clinton was president but Justice Kennedy changed his mind at the last minute. My sister remarked that most the women who originally fought for reproductive rights are grandmothers now. THere are a lot of young women are not paying attention to this issue. Thank you for listening.
  • OlderButWiser · 1 year ago
You're right on all of it. And I'm 67 and a great-grandmother now who was active in the women's movement. It was one of our most important issues, if not the core one, because reproduction has the most impact on how you live your life. And yes, young women today take a lot for granted and don't realize how tenuous this right has become. I'm always appalled at the low rate of birth control (and even the lack of condom use indicates a flirtation with STDs) which seems to be the norm these days.
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
    Hey OlderButWiser,

You won't believe this. I'm still in shock. I ran into a woman who is a college professor. She is a woman's rights advocate, and she and I agreed on everything politically prior to now. She is about 70 years old, and she told me today she doesn't know who she is going to vote for. I didn't know how to respond. I'm scared. I was thinking "Invasion of the Body Snatchers."
  • SarainKC · 1 year ago
The only thing it is missing to me is a huge point, that even the fundies might respond to and that is by charging women to collect evidence against their attackers, they are making it easier for rapists to rape without fear of getting caught- especially if they luck out and rape a poor woman who can't afford a rape kit. This is as much a crime issue as anything else.
  • ron071 · 1 year ago
I invite ANY WOMAN to explain how the Palin refusal to provide rape kits in her town of Wasilla can allow their vote for her? This single issue highlights the extremes of a civilized society as represented by the lying Queen of Earmarks. This policy alone disqualifies her and the idiot / opportunist who would put the country in her extremist hands. Any Women please respond on this issue.
  • ron071 · 1 year ago
EVERY WOMAN NEEDS TO RESPOND TO THIS

    PALIN OUTRAGE !

The denial off rape kits to violated women by Sarah Palin is beyond the pale and every woman in America must be made aware of it. This is the equivalent of genital mutilation in the extreme 4th world countries.
  • RevDrBillyBob · 1 year ago
Too bad these folks had to do their own ad . . . too bad that the Obama Campaign REFUSES to do anything this good.
  • ron071 · 1 year ago
Rev DrBillyBob: I counsel PATIENCE sir. The truth is coming. Outrages of this magnitude will not go without wide dissemination. Rest assured that the truth about McSame and Palin is on the way to a tv near you.

ENOUGH OF THE REPUBLICAN LIES & DISTORTIONS. Harry Truman said it best: " We'll tell the truth and they'll think its HELL!
  • ron071 · 1 year ago
How do lunatics and extremists get into office? This can only happen where the public is allowed to be ignorant of the facts and the records. Not in America, NOW or EVER !

WANT MORE PAIN ??????????VOTE McSAME-PALIN !!!!!!!!!!!

    OT

Oh, botoxed anorexic socialite Cindy McCain crying about The View interview. This bag of bones really, really wants to be First Lady.

"In spite of what you see …in the newspapers, and on shows like The View — I don't know if any of you saw The View yesterday, they picked our bones clean — in spite of what you see, that's not what the American people are saying and what they are believing," said McCain, in a recording obtained by ABC News. "They are now seeing a clear difference with these candidates, and they are seeing who is going to make the best president, and that's why we're pulling ahead."
  • ron071 · 1 year ago
John MSame now counsels us not to believe what we see on tv or read in the papers. The world is not as you see it but what I lie to you about EVERY DAY. He must believe in the American idiot theory or the theory of creationism with him as God of the truth.
  • lynchie · 1 year ago
Remember Rodney King. The cops beat the shit out of him and it didn't happen.
  • sukabi1 · 1 year ago
It's the "Who you gonna believe, me or your own lying eyes" defense...
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
Picked her bones clean? There is nothing on her bones to pick clean...
  • SarainKC · 1 year ago
This needs to be shared with every woman out there and especially sent to every local women's group. Shit like this should bury these cretins. We can't sit quietly and wait for someone to take the lead on this. We have to do our part and forward this on to everyone we know. I can't wait to see what John comes up with tomorrow. We have our issue that will sink them, folks. We can't let up.
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
What a great commercial. By the way, please pin a medal on those two parents. Raising their young girls RIGHT! Making sure they are plugged in and politically aware. We need more PARENTS like those two.
  • sukabi1 · 1 year ago
The video response to this ad needs to get out there, when asked if she would allow her daughter to have an abortion if she was raped, Palin replied "I would choose life".

it's a good ad, but needs to be tightened / cleaned up a bit... but could be a very powerful ad, using Palin's own words.
  • fauxbourdon · 1 year ago
John, can you start a fundraising drive to run this ad (or one based on it) on TV in a battleground state or two? I am SHOCKED that nobody has publicly hit McCain/Palin on this issue yet. I'm sure your loyal readers would love to chip in to get this thing aired...
  • HelenaMontana · 1 year ago
If somebody starts a drive, I'm in for $50.
  • truebluecoondog · 1 year ago
Me too. Hands down, it's the most precise and factual ad out there. Just the facts, ma'am.
  • AdmNaismith · 1 year ago
There are far too many women (as in more than one) out there who assume Palin is pro-choice just because she is a woman- when the truth is she would force you to have a Rape Baby.
Obama need to correct that notion real fast.
  • naschkatzehussein · 1 year ago
I've begged the Obama campaign to put out an ad comparing Palin and Biden re violence against women. Why can't, or why won't, they do it?
  • HelenaMontana · 1 year ago
Excellent. Too bad the Obama campaign won't use it.
  • tlsintx · 1 year ago
email this around to everyone you know.

excellent work by real people, fed up with McCain/Palin and the failed GOP.
  • bettie · 1 year ago
NOW, Moveon.org, or Planned Parenthood should contact these people and run a TV ad very very similiar to this with images of different women in the ad. I hope this family will contact PParenthood or Moveon to get this ad on the air ( or at least something similiar).

Very hard hitting!!! I like it..... We need to get tough and I have given up on Obama actually going there.... we have to do this ourselves b/c there is too much at stake this time!!
  • bronco214 · 1 year ago
Wow yeah KICK 'EM IN THE BALLS!
  • Cjeffery · 1 year ago
There counting on us to get this sort of thing out so they don't have to look like the bad guys. Hell in my area my and a friend made our own fylers and as soon as this rain stops will be hitting the streets with them putting them on cars and giving them to anyone that will take them.
  • Butch1 · 1 year ago
Short, precise, to the point, what else can one say about this very good amateur video comment?! Kudos to this lady.

I'd be in for *at least* $50.00 to get this thing on the air.
