AMERICAblog: John McCain's weird obsession with sex

  • Lolis · 1 year ago
This ad may turn out being a gift to Obama. This program was started to protect little kids from sexual predators. Obama can put out a great response ad about how he fought to protect the most innocent among us, and why does John McCain have a problem with that?

This ad is so misleading and dirty, Obama has a huge opportunity. I think his campaign is up to challenge to turn this into a huge positive. The press will give Obama free air time to respond.

<sigh> Sadly, the core of the GOP is obsessed with sex and it's a well known fact they have it, but don't talk about it in polite society. To the GOP, sex is so dirty you MUST keep it private. And they only have sex to procreate, unless they're in an airport where it has to be secret gay sex. The teen daughters of Dems and Independents who get pregnant are disgraces on their families, proof their parents aren't fit, and further proof that comprehensive sex education caused the pregnancy. But GOP daughters pray to baby jesus and it's just a family having private Hallmark moments. As an out and proud gay man (in a relationship that has lasted 10 years, longer than many GOP marriages) I'm no longer shocked by the GOPs sex obsession.

Speaking of divorce, Anyone know which state has the lowest rate of divorce in the US? Hint: Washington, DC has the lowest rate, but isn't a state. It's also so overwhelmingly Democratic the GOP mandated in Home Rule that one seat on the city council must be reserved for a non-Democrat. So which state do you think has the lowest rate? (Last hint, it's not in the GOP south...)
  • martha · 1 year ago
I'll bite. Which state is it?
  • dacnova · 1 year ago
Massachusetts, you know the one that has allowed the gays to marry for over 4 years...
  • martha · 1 year ago
    I should have known.

    Yeah, you should have. ;-)

This reminds me... is Christ still engaged now that he's not the GOP Veep pick?

AK? No way. how funny. Yes, DC is over 90 percent democratic.

How do you know Trigg isn't a dad yet? Considering the level of vetting, who knows what else might come out between now and November...

    OT -

Ben Smiyh at the Politico quotes Obama using sharp word:

Obama poked fun of McCain and Palin's new "change" mantra.

    http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0908/Oba...

"You can put lipstick on a pig," he said as the crowd cheered. "It's still a pig."

"You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It's still gonna stink."

Strong images and almost slang. IMO needs a transition beforing slipping into this, but rolling in the mud has to be done if one wants to defeat a pig. Wait and see if it is effective.
  • fostert · 1 year ago
Can we get a link to the ad?

Anyway, this seems like easy pickings for a really nasty rebuttal ad. Maybe something along the lines of "McCain supports child rapists by opposing abuse education."

  • cmccbald · 1 year ago
You write: "McCain is going to get as sleazy as he needs to in order to take down Obama."

Who would have thought it: the Republican Party has become the party that promotes premarital teenage pregnancy and facilitates the sexual exploitation of minors. Oh, and divorce, which Jesus didn't much like.

The "family values" of the McCain and Palin families. Actually, there is a certain mavericky quality here.
  • BarbaraGordon · 1 year ago
Sex is a good soundbite for McCain - just like taxes. I am in Florida and being bombarded with the same McCain ad scaring people that Obama will raise their taxes. I have seen it over and over and am sure that many people now accept it as truth.
  • downindixie · 1 year ago
Can we stop the lies of McGoo and Phalin.I'm sick of the msm, there are hardly any true jounalist left,it all about the money and keeping their jobs. There should be a campaign "Stop the Lies".
  • canuck55 · 1 year ago
These people are just plain evil. McCain has been totally corrupted by his lust for power. McCain is going straight to hell.
  • mf_roe · 1 year ago
The voters who have truly not decided how they will vote will NOT fall in love. They will decide which candidate they feel is most undesirable. Obama needs to stop courting and start exposing McShame for the corrupt lying jerk that he is. The rest of the election will be about negatives, get over it. There is no dishonor in exposing a liar.
  • scooter in brooklyn · 1 year ago
Dear john - I love you when you write like this
  • bill__free · 1 year ago
Just watched hardball and King-R & Wassermen Schultz-D were responding to a question about taxes. They talked over each other for minutes. I viewed this as a HUGE win by the republicans, as their reply to a question about taxes and what mccain plan was, ended up being an argument about obamas plan.

Why didn't matthews end this by interjecting with the facts, and let the chips fall where they may? I want to KNOW what each candidates plan is and NOT what the party minions say.

    GIVE THE PEOPLE THE TRUTH.
  • bsharwood · 1 year ago
This is, in fact, very clever on the McCain side. All issues like this are divisive, and that's what the Republicans do well with. This is the kind of thing that will boost the McCain numbers because it creates a wedge issue. It stirs 'outrage' in the republican supporters and will bring them out to support it. It doesn't need to be true, as we already know.
Be wary of these types of things and do not take it lightly.

I wonder what Alaska rules permit.

Considering the rape stats for Alaska, I'd say that they live by a very "loose" version of the old favorite "If they're old enough to bleed, they're old enough to butcher."

And as for the McCain camp, seems like they are practicing a bit of child predation themselves with how they are using Bristol and the other Palin kids... I have no doubt that by the time this is over none of the Palin kids will be reasonably well adjusted.

is anybody else bored of Obama reacting instead of acting?

In the response ad, show McCain as the Creepy Guy in that SNL skit. Splice it in with shadowy sex predators. Gloves off!
  • vwcat · 1 year ago
John, To begin with, the polls were skewed to republicans. the top of the main page of Huffpo explains that the polls were conducted with a heavier sampling of republicans and therefor is skewing the polling.
So, Obama is doing what he needs to.
also, the lying by Palin is starting to come out.
Hopefully amid all this the fact that McCain is wallowing in mud by using this as a way to smear Obama when he is thinking about protecting young children will get out and get out correctly.

Here's what the Alaska Learning Standards for public education say about sex education:
"(students must) understand the physical and behavioral characteristics of human sexual development and maturity;"
And further, in the Early Learning Standards for children aged birth through five years, that children should be taught about "safe and unsafe" touching as well as about sexual predators.
Learning Standards have been adopted by every state, under the direction of the education commissioners or secretaries, to direct publicly funded schools at the local level. Alaska's are typical of those found in other states, and the kind of sex education for young children that most professional educators find appropriate.

Anyone out there able to give us the inside dope on how the education commissioner, the governor's delegate for this kind of work, is supporting sex education in the state (for example, a staff person assigned to help local schools, grants for family life education, support for student civil rights teams, etc)?

Sarah Palin was chosen as a distraction, and now McCain has to distract from his distraction. Love it. In spite of what the "polls" are showing, McCain is in trouble. I don't mean to plagiarize Anne Frank, but I still believe people are good of heart and that the Republicans have played out their filth for all its worth.
  • sukabi1 · 1 year ago
John, the McCain ad is not only wrong, they cite articles in it that slam McCain worse than anything they say about Obama.

McCain is still counting on the media to give him a Free Ride with his lies, because really the media for has been his greatest fans for the entirety of his career.
  • moreleesafer · 1 year ago
just watched the ad...creepy as hell. they are playing upon stereotyps of black men here. yeah, I know people will say this is being hypersensitive to racism. But I'm black...I know it when I see it. Rove is good at being subtle when he needs to be. this plays upon whites fears of a black man touching their lily white daughter. watch as the words fade.....you are left with Obama smiling weirdly almost laciviously while looking down into the frams. he looks like some sort of pedophile. Especially when the only word left on the screen is a great big "SEX".
  • DAinLA · 1 year ago
Burton's statement is why Obama will probably lose. Could it be longer? It's like Kerry all over again. Sound bite. Hit McCain hard.

"John McCain newest ad is disgusting and a lie."

End of comment. It's like politics 101.
  • Mark in Florida · 1 year ago
McSame needs to go down. I saw this ad, it is beyond the Palin. Quite stunning. I hope the American public sees through this. although I am not holding my breath. Is it time for the first debates???

I am having nightmares thinking of Palin in charge of the 'red button'. It scares the shit out of me.

    WAKE UP AMERICA.
  • jmcon007 · 1 year ago
I concur with John Aravosis.....I, too, am not aware of anyone I've ever known who doesn't love America.

On one level, as a fellow Viet Nam veteran and fellow member of the Department of the Navy - the Marines - John McCain's moral meltdown has been a painful thing for me to watch.

I'm a 58 year-old combat veteran of the Viet Nam war and am proud of the two Purple Hearts awarded to me for combat wounds. (despite the way the Republicans' unforgiveably and disgracefully denigrated, very openly, the medal during one of their goofy GOP national conventions.)

If I learned nothing else during the two years I was privileged to call myself a Marine, I learned about 'honor'. I'm not claiming to be the embodiment of the word myself, but I still know what the fucking thing looks like.

Mr McCain.....whether you lose this race or not, the tragic reality for you is that you have allowed your campaign, in its 'hair-on-fire' desperation to 'win', to manipulate you to a point where you have already lost your honor. It's gone.
    Think about that.....

And you lost your honor, Senator McCain, because somewhere along the way, you lost your moral courage.

And you couldn't trade me every house you own to be in your Ferragamos when that ugly realization finally hits you, sir,
  • daingel · 1 year ago
He must seem to have sex on the brain, he can't even leave Palin's side on their little stump speeches, it seems like he can't part from her. He likes to use young naughty blonds in his ads, especially ones who's sister had an out of wedlock child in her teens. He likes to make rape jokes. Wonder where Cindy is?

And then there's the Drill baby Drill with all of the Republican sex/scandals you have to wonder if they're even talking about oil. Or insinuating to men, isn't my VP choice something you would love to drill, as Palin seems to be in pageantry/puppetry mode constantly.

You have to wonder if the GOP are using the sex subliminals.
  • sukabi1 · 1 year ago
Josh Marshall has more on this disgusting ad.

TPM Reader JM not happy with McCain's sleazy campaign ...

The sex ed ad is literally worse than the Willie Horton ad, because at least the Horton story was true. But the bill Obama supported actually did the reverse of what McCain claims - it didn't mandate more sex ed for anybody, it tried to toughen up existing classes by teaching the risks of STDs. The bill didn't glorify sex, it highlighted the dangers of sex. It's the most old fashioned sex ed there is: scaring kids straight. So now even THAT is anti-family?

Calling this "perverse" is a good first step, but the lie here deserves much, much more. It's the disgusting act of a candidate who cares more about scaring people with lies than warning kids about the dangers of early sexual activity. Anyone who would oppose such
warnings is an objective supporter of unprotected, unsafe underage sex.

So throw back the slime with a truthful attack: It's McCain who wants more unsafe teenage sex, McCain who wants more kids to get STDs, McCain who wants more young people to get HIV. McCain would rather win a political campaign than protect children from sexual diseases.

That's worse than shameful, worse than unpatriotic. That's evil.

TPM Reader WS has some more to add ...

Is everyone looking close enough at the McCain ad? I just watched the ad again. There is one picture of children, all of them white (I think - can you tell?) And the next image is of Obama, looking down and over his shoulder, with a smile on his face. But since when do campaign ads show your opponent smiling? It's always a frown or a grimace, right? Not this time. What's he smiling about? It's not subtle. And it's not an ad about sex education. A black man, sex, and children. I think this ad is more odious than is being acknowledged. Take another look at it!

Couldn't agree more. But let's not be surprised. McCain is pure sleaze. Sound harsh? Sure. But any other interpretation of the man at this point amounts to willful obliviousness or an embrace of the fantasy that he somehow doesn't know what his campaign is doing in his name. This is the race he's decided to run. Now what do you do about it?
