AMERICAblog: Judge approves melamine-tainted pet food settlement

It shouldn't work this way. I'm not getting a settlement because I didn't sue. Maybe we should have some federal agency to prevent this kind of thing. I got a name for it. Let's call it the Department of Agriculture. Oops, turns out that's already a cabinet level entity. So what the hell is it doing? It's obviously not doing anything related the the regulation of agriculture. Although it does seem to hand out a lot of cash. Is it possible that maybe this department might need some changes? Or am I just crazy? Okay, I'm crazy, but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't look at a little modernization of the Department of Agriculture. How about starting with allowing meat packing companies to test their meat? It's illegal now to test more than 2% of your meat. And 100%?, that's way out. It would put those that don't test at a competitive disadvantage. Wouldn't want dishonorable businesses going out of business, would we? It's apparently more important to put the honorable businesses out of business. Turns out that the only way to succeed in business these days is to break laws and fail.

I have an idea and it's really crazy. Maybe we should manage our agriculture in such a way that it produces healthy food for people. They had that crazy idea back in the 40's. And then they turned it into a program that didn't work very good, but at least provided food. Now, it only provides subsidies for Archer Daniels Midland and Monsanto. And they use that to screw farmers in the rest of the world. They've already screwed them here, so there's nothing left to conquer. Fortunately, some of those farmers in the developing world are willing to stand up. Monsanto executives sure can talk tough, but they don't fare so well when an AK-47 is pressed to their forehead. Wimps.

I wonder how long it will take for the Democrats to restore some of these government agencies to actually do some oversight. Or are the lobbyists so in THEIR pockets, too. Probably. Our system encourages WAY too much campaign spending in the billions which only enriches the media. But the electorate is so stupid that running for office requires it...or maybe not. Obama has spent money but he is also showing the internet is the future of politics. In a parliamentary system, they get like two weeks to campaign. We could use some of that.

Yeah, I wonder too. But with MCain, I know who's going to be in control. And it's not good for us, and it's not good for the rest of the world either. Competitive relationships really aren't as good as cooperative ones. I think Obama knows this. But I don't know. But at least there's a chance. With McCain, it's just give more money to people who don't need it, and let the economy be damned. There's a real way to deal with agriculture. And it involves the theories of John Nash and Paul Krugrman. Too bad nobody in America listens to them. Oh wait, most of us do. Maybe the media will catch up to us. Well, that's getting a little too optimistic. But maybe the New York Times might think that their Nobel prize winner has something to offer. Okay, that's going too far too. Gotta have balance, after all. So they have Bill Kristol. And let's just think about that for a minute.

    Bill Kristol vs Paul Krugram.

Hmmm. One of those guys knows what they're talking about. Who could possibly guess which one that is? I'm going to make a wild guess: maybe the guy with the Nobel prize? But that would be silly, wouldn't it?

no amount of money will bring my dog back, and I miss him dearly.

By the luck of the Fates we weren't affected, but if we had been I know I couldn't keep the money. I'd just feel dirty. But I also wouldn't want to pass up a chance to make them pay.

There are plenty of shelters out there that could use money, and that's where mine would go.

BTW, did anybody note a couple of weeks ago that the FDA said it was just fine for humans to imbibe a certain level of melamine in their food -- as long as it's not baby formula? Sure good to know they're looking out for us.
