AMERICAblog: Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews go off on GOP rep who called Matthew Shepard murder "a hoax"

  • ShirleyGoodnessanMercy · 7 months ago
In September 2005, Foxx was one of 11 members of Congress to vote against the $51 billion aid package to victims of Hurricane Katrina.

She was also one of only 33 Republicans to vote against the extension of the Voting Rights Act in July 2006.

In the lame duck session of 2006, she introduced H.J.RES.96, a joint resolution praising the Christmas tree industry. The bill passed the House of Representatives but died in the Senate.

Is there a contest or something among Republicans to see who can say the most hateful things? It seems as though there is.

Although, with Rash Limpbutt now being the head of the party, I guess that's only to be expected.

Or is it just that all the sane people have left the party? Look at their leadership -- Caribou Barbie, Bobby Jindaloo, Rash, Joe the Plunger, Cranky McCain. The GOP is like a really bad movie.

You said it best so far this morning. Actually, I'm going to copy your "Or is it...." paragraph and put in my pocket to show around today. LMAO. Thanks for a morning pick me up. The coffee syrup I'm drinking isn't working yet.

It's called Night of the Living Dead.
  • Butch1 · 7 months ago
Love your names, especially "Joe the Plunger," although, "Rash Limpbutt" is a keeper as well. ;-)
  • larkohio · 7 months ago
She clearly told a hideous, cruel lie to further her party's agenda. She chose her party over ethics.
  • mtiffany · 7 months ago
"She chose her party over ethics." That's not a difficult choice when membership in the former requires a total lack of the latter.
  • larkohio · 7 months ago
    Very good!
  • RainbowPhoenix · 7 months ago
By my count, it took her about 5-7 hours to start backtracking.
  • JohnInTexas · 7 months ago
Did she start backtracking? I haven't heard about that yet.
  • RainbowPhoenix · 7 months ago
She's trying to claim that she didn't really mean it and that it was just a poor choice of words.
  • JohnInTexas · 7 months ago
She is a professional politician, she should know how to choose her words, not to mention, from what I saw, she had those words written down in front of her in some form so she had thought about it for more than 5 minutes. I'll be watching today, can't wait to see her try to squirm out of it. Maybe Judy Shepard bitchslapped her down the halls of congress and made her see the light! :)

Oh Keith. How I love thee.

anyone who opposes updates to the existing hate crimes laws to include sexual orientation, should IMMEDIATELY put forth a bill to repeal the current hate crimes law that protects race, religion and national origin.

Then see how far they get.

In that 4 1/2 minute clip I started out laughing and ended with tears in my eyes. We should keep calling this woman until she quits.

C-SPIN had a Republican gay (based on massive gaydar pinging and lots of hands) man of Paki or Indian ethnicity on this morning opposite Chris Hayes of The Nation. The teeny, tiny little guy was ID'ed as being a "New America Foundation Fellow"..."Instant Fellow" should have been more like it...New America is yet another freshly minted attempt by the stale old Rethug powers to rebrand themselves as something more than an empty, gated tent.
But, as oodles of us have pointed out for decades now, how come so many Rethug spearcarries appear to be rock-ribbed Friends of Dorothy???
    It's spookie!!!
Chances are, a closeted quisling actually wrote Virginny Foxx's floor remarks...

I'm sure she thinks of herself as a "fine, upstanding, christian." This woman is a poor excuse for an human being and needs to step down. Of course, she doesn't have the dignity or the brains to do the right thing. If I were in her family, I would disown her. She represents the morale's ( or lack there of ) of her party. Perhaps, the whole party will do the right thing and fall on its sword and put itself out of its misery.
  • RainbowPhoenix · 7 months ago
"I'm sure she thinks of herself as a 'fine, upstanding, christian.'"

    Don't they all?
  • Butch1 · 7 months ago
Unfortunately, they all must not own any mirrors to be able to reflect upon themselves morally to continue this dog & pony act. I hope they do not learn their lesson and fade away to history. What's left of their party only represents the right-wing fringe christian part of the party and once that becomes apparent to many more republicans, they will jump ship as well. It wouldn't surprise me to see a new moderate republican party rise out of the ashes of this one or there will be two republican parties which will put them in a position to never win any elections. It would all count on the Independent voters to give them any credibility.

"if America is going to have one on the books - and it does already - the law should cover everyone"

That's been precisely my argument towards my ultra-conservative GAY acquaintance. I've told him if you can't be persecuted simply because of your extreme right religion then that's a special right. For some reason, even though he's gay, he thinks adding gays/trangendered people to this law is shameful. It simply doesn't make sense -- well, except that he's an elitist who wants to keep the club small so he can feel important.
  • ShirleyGoodnessanMercy · 7 months ago
Also, it is extremely hard to un-do the brainwashing of society. And sometimes people cling to irrational opinions in order to please a parent or loved one. I had a gay friend who was abused by a very liberal dad so he remained very anti-liberal until he had counseling in his 40's to deal with the abuse. He held tight to Republican (anti-gay) politics until he could see that all liberals were not like his abusive dad. Bizarre, yet many people have their politics based on similarly irrational things.
  • woodroad34 · 7 months ago
Interesting POV. My friend was an only child with a very proper mother -- you can see her influence in alot of what he does and his father (although a telephone company worker) was "proper" as well.

I sent Ms Foxx a comment through her Congressional site, but I have no reason to believe it will be noted. After entering my personal information, the site balked at me putting in anything but "NC" in the state field. I know that they don't respond to other than constituents, but WTF...I wanted to put in my state "SC." I wanted her to know that this white, middle-aged, heterosexual, thoroughly Southern male thought she was an utter fool/tool/douche-nozzle.

She is one of Eric Cantor's thugs who use procedural rules to over-talk other House members, particularly freshmen who aren't yet versed in the fine art of House ass-baggery. She may look like someone's grandmother (oh, the horror), but she is certainly one mean-assed piece of work.
  • brb915 · 7 months ago
.......give us the link...........anyone out there, go to yellowpages.com and look up any address in NC you want, then use it to blow her site up
  • caphillprof · 7 months ago
Yes, follow brb915. I often look up the address of their local constituent office back home in XXX and then enter an address a couple of doors away or sometimes I just use a former address.

I don't think Senators and Congress persons should be able to hide behind their narrow constituencies.
  • woodroad34 · 7 months ago
I love how you can only be a resident of the state, yet her vote affects the rest of the nation. How bubble-ish of her.

"Top Gun" star Kelly McGillis just came out of the closet:
    http://www.towleroad.com/2009/04/top-gun-star-k...

So... IF Cruise turns out to be gay, too, America's greatest hetero hero romance flick starred 2 gay actors!

In all fairness to the woman, she didn't say The Murder was a hoax, she said the fact that the crime had something to do with Matthew's sexuality rather than just a plain robbery was a hoax. She was arguing against including Sexual Orientation in the Federal Hate Crimes Statute.
  • Louis_Lemire · 7 months ago
Sure. In all fairness...give me a break.
  • vickif · 7 months ago
Why is religion in a hate crimes law? Some of the worst haters in the world are so called religious people.
  • RainbowPhoenix · 7 months ago
She's now claiming that she's getting death threats.
  • ccortezz · 7 months ago
They are coming from God no doubt
  • Gridlock · 7 months ago
I bet she's receiving a number of distress calls as well..

    *twirls finger beside head*
  • ccortezz · 7 months ago
Someone forgot to tell grandma the lawyers for one of the haters used gay panic as defense for the simple robbery. What a stupid stupid woman- just cause they whisper something in your ear doesn't make it true.

An American Congress Rep. to be proud of.
  • CarolAll · 7 months ago
Rep. Foxx (R-NC) deserves to go the way of Libby Dole, another nasty North Carolinia politician. There is nothing that excuses these remarks. There is no apology that forgives this sort of nastiness. I've watched Foxx spout off on other topics on C-SPAN, such as her opinions on the stimulus bill, TARP, and budget legislation. Foxx has one of the sharpest, nastiest tones of any Congress person.

It's time to reign in these rightwingnuts. I fail to understand why there is no official censure, no reprimand or warning, to those like Fox, Bachmann, Shimkus, etc. who voice such evil and false statements. Spreading nasty lies is not what these people were elected to do. They should be ashamed of themselves. Is this all about getting their names in the news? They should be ashamed. Their constituents should be embarassed and outraged. Clearly, the minority leader shows no responsibility to upholding the veracity, honor, or integrity of his party. We have no control over media personalities and pundits, but American citizens can hold elected officials to standards of dignity and decency.
  • Wolfsinger · 7 months ago
Rep. Foxx represents the unrepentant and viscous core nature of today's Republican party in whole cloth. Period. Need proof? I doubt there will be one iota of public outcry for these despicable words said on the house floor by any of the Republican leaders. Tragically, there will be support from someone else within her party. Rep. Foxx clearly felt embolden by her party in order to take her stand.

This day and the jury is in. Republican = Hate, Lies and Hypocrisy.
  • vkobaya · 7 months ago
I wonder how many more thousands of Republicans decided to reregister as Democrats thanks to this bigot's hatefilled remarks. I seriously doubt anyone except for a few mental hospital patients would have been converted to Republicans by her bigotry.
  • offspring · 7 months ago
Ok for those that don't understand the truth, the fact that they argue that "a crime is a crime" and should be treated as such without any "special rights", that isn't true for them at all, for instance, murder 1, manslaughter, involuntary manslaughter, aggrivated manslaughter, also burn a house it is arson, burn a church it is a federal crime, we have many differnent forms and levels of crimes due to intent, and motivation.

The argument against gays inclusion has more to do with law suits than anything else, if we forget the white suprimist case where a black woman sued people that spoke hate and it motivated their followers to kill her son, the courts found that they had influence over the situation and they motivated it, the church for years has influenced murder of gays, rape of lesbians, harrassment and beatings of gays and transgenders, with the weapon of missdirected and lead religous speach, they are afraid that they can be held responsible for their actions they cannot and will never self monitor, nor self responsibility due to the belief that they are right solely on their faith, which is a choice, noone is born religous it is taught, it is tax exempt and you can say anything hateful or leading others to do violence as long as you say it is in the bible and a matter of faith, the church has special rights as it doesnt pay tax's but it can decided through followers others rights in this country which in itself should be illegal. Their time is dying and they are afraid, before they went about without any backlash now there is some. This isnt about gays the problem is with their dying power struggle they are a dying breed and the church will loose power and control in many ways and it will not stop it will pull all things out to stop it. They will do whatever they can to impose their way of life on others without thinking that maybe alot don't consider their way to be the best
