AMERICAblog: LA Film Festival director reportedly gave $1500 to Prop 8

  • renegademom · 1 year ago
Wow! I just checked out Santa Fe, NM, and out of 43 contributors, ALL opposed Prop 8. Hooray for Santa Fe!!!
  • renegademom · 1 year ago
interesting......almost ALL of the donations SUPPORTING Prop 8 in the State of NM were high dollar amounts given between 10/27 and 11/1. That must have been when the mormons sent out those last emails???? Anyone have any info on this?
  • Butch1 · 1 year ago
"Raddon has been with the festival since 2000. Film Independent made a statement to Poland, saying no employee can be fired for their religious affiliation."
    ---------------------------------------
This may be true but no one has to pay to see movies at his establishment either. Sounds like a "win - win" situation to me.
  • DorothyGale · 1 year ago
Perez Hilton gave $1,000 to the No side. I only know that because I share a name with him and I was looking myself up. I do not show up on the list and I definitely gave over $100 to the No side. I don't think the linked database is complete.
  • Steve_in_CNJ · 1 year ago
you might have to list your whole state. the entries are in reverse chrono order, if that helps.

Mormons and anti-gay marriage supporters: hidden in plain sight, it seems.
  • SkippyFlipjack · 1 year ago
At some point are we going to stop trying to get people fired over this? There are a crapload of people who gave money to Yes-on-8, and significantly more who voted for the damn thing. Tons of them have connections with gay people -- they work with them or for them, they know them, they're related to them. (They share wide stances with them...) Does every Yes-on-8 donor in the arts community deserve more ire than a plastic surgeon with a number of gay clients, or a guy who delivers the newspaper to several gay couples?

The goal is to get the next Prop 8 passed. Is this the best way of achieving that?
  • Steve_in_CNJ · 1 year ago
the majority of voters aren't going to know what we are doing here, which is cutting off the funding of the hate campaign. i think it's well worth a try, with no obvious downside.
PS: not sure what you mean about the goal being to pass the next prop 8. if you're not following what's going on here, you're wasting people's time.
  • SkippyFlipjack · 1 year ago
heh.. no, I actually live in CA, I did phone-banking for No on 8, and for pete's sake, I even changed my facebook photo to a no-on-8 button. :)

anyway that's sort of my point -- are we really cutting of the funding of the hate campaign by attacking people at their workplace after the fact, people who represent a tiny portion of the tens of millions funnelled into the campaign?

frankly, a huge part of the reason Prop 8 passed was that No on 8 wasn't nearly as organized or as well-funded as the Yes forces. Anyone who didn't give money to No on 8 is as culpable as those who gave to Yes on 8.
  • Steve_in_CNJ · 1 year ago
let's not assume it's a tiny portion. there are more of us as them. they didn't expect this kind of exposure, since they have been doing this for 15 years with impunity. no more.

i'm not sure what you're adding to the discussion in your 3rd paragraph.

Yes, another shill posting on here......

( You can tell a shill....they ask questions on a blog)

    Damn Skippy! ;>)
  • SkyjackPfippil · 1 year ago
Right, everyone who disagrees with the site majority view is a "shill", even if 90% of the time they agree with the majority. (The proper word is "troll", btw.)
  • DavidinPS · 1 year ago
Who has asked that anybody be fired? That was the response from the film company. They answered a question that hadn't been asked. All this is information. People may use it to make their displeasure known or to let their support be heard. It also allows those who may take severe umbrage to take their business elsewhere. If someone chooses to resign because he has become a liability to his company, as did the fellow at the Musical Theater, that is his choice. No one forced him to resign. Nor was he fired.
  • SkippyFlipjack · 1 year ago
Many people demanded that the guy in Sacramento be fired. People will be doing the same here. It's not right. Anyone who gave money to Yes on 8 is a despicable, hateful person, but that's their right. Targeting a Yes-on-8 business makes sense; they'll make the business decision to not donate again. Getting someone fired? Not so much.

And again, anyone who calls one of these business to complain about their hateful employee but didn't give money to No on 8 themselves needs to take a little time to reflect on that.
  • DavidinPS · 1 year ago
BTW the goal is to get the next Prop 8 DEFEATED. Unless you betray yourself.
  • SkippyFlipjack · 1 year ago
    lol.. right, I mistyped.
  • mirth · 1 year ago
No large scale protest movement is entirely fair. Do you think that every racist who contributed to all the stumbling blocks for Blacks was targeted in those protests? Of course they weren't, but the on-going protests, no matter how scattered, eventually coalesced and the result was protective civil rights legislation.

The important thing now, the vital thing, is that No On H8 continue. In time, as specific information is learned and passed along (like here at Americablog), the protests can be more targeted and in that sense more "fair."

The Knights of Columbus is headquarted in New Haven, CT. They are closely affiliated with the Catholic church. The headquarters in New Haven made the following contributions

    1/30/08 $250,000
    8/14/08 $1,000,000
    10/20/08 $150,000

How much of the Knights political activity was done independent of using any type of Catholic church resources. Mailing lists, facilities, etc Or were they simply the vehicle the Catholic church used to funnel their contributions?
  • mmedefarge · 1 year ago
I was raised as a Catholic and gave the religion up mentally at about age 12 and physically when I was 17 and went away to college, so my memory may not be completely accurate, but the Kof C were very active in our parish. They were the ushers and the collection tray passers, and I believe there was either a recurring collection whose proceeds went to them (the so-called "second collection") or a donation box at the back of the church along with the St Vincent de Paul "poor box" (which is where my money went).
  • smiling_dog · 1 year ago
I gave a couple of donations to oppose prop 8 and I am not showing up on my hometown database.
  • lucky hussein · 1 year ago
founder of this sf investment co gave 5K, if anyone knows them:

This does feel a bit like the Music Theater thing. A guy who has to do with business with an industry with many gay and gay friendly people secretly thinks they are not worthy of equal rights. I would expect a few of his calls might be met with frostbite when this gets around.
  • WadeMD · 1 year ago
The truly sad part about looking at that database is not seeing the names of people contributing to the opposition. I know A LOT of doctors and lawyers with tons of money and none of them donated to stop Props 2 or 8. I guess greed doesn't have a sexual orientation.
  • cilidog · 1 year ago
This is a minor player but nonetheless, just found out my dentist, John Ludwig DDS, from Cupertino,Ca. donated $1,000.00 to the YES campaign. Of course he'll lose my household's business but, perhaps he can pick up Marie Osmond as a patient--THAT mouth of teeth will keep him busy for years! Grassroots boycott. Keep it going.
  • dacnova · 1 year ago
The database isn't complete. I searched on my last name for the full country and it only showed 2 donations out of at least 5.
  • cscott · 1 year ago
Here's a former Microsoft millionaire and head of a Redmond Washington charitable org. that has as its mission statement "making people's lives better" that gave 100K to ProtectMarriage.com and the Mormon Church in support of Prop 8

    Holy Gay Sex Batman!

That would have carried much more water if the viewers would have had a choice not to see that.

    WTF
  • cscott · 1 year ago
Sorry about that Patrick. You clicked the link before I could take down the moving banners.

Hopefully the two male naked butts in the ads that I left showing aren't too stimulating for your delicate sensibilities.
  • Patrick_Bateman · 1 year ago
Please, not necessary to take a swipe at my "sensibilities".

It falls short. Overt sex has no place on a public screen, albeit straught, gay, mixed etc...
  • cscott · 1 year ago
Except for the fact that I actually own that blog so it is, in fact, private -- and any readers who go there do so at their own risk as it says right on the main page where it also warns them to navigate away if they don't like what they see there.

So save your moralizing Patrick, pay closer attention to detail so that your Victorian sensibilities won't be offended in the future and learn how to spell and use proper grammar when you comment on blogs.
  • Patrick_Bateman · 1 year ago
If it was so private, why did I see it?
  • Patrick_Bateman · 1 year ago
    TY to whomever .

TUPOS when upset really need to be pointed out.
  • monitor · 1 year ago
cscott won't be replying...rather, he may be replying but you won't see it on a thread :)
  • Patrick_Bateman · 1 year ago
Thank you, I guess. Don't want to halt freedom of speech but...

Grammar and spelling be damned when hurridley making a point.

Chad Packard, the Chief Executive Officer of "APPLE ORTHODONTIX" with 19 offices in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area gave $5000.00 in support of Prop 8.
  • derekcbart · 1 year ago
    Here's one that seems interesting:

Robert Little Insurance gave a total of $18,000. $9,500 from Robert Little and $8,500 from Lu Little. Here is their website: http://www.boblittleinsurance.com/

If anyone uses them for their insurance needs it would seem to be time to find another insurance agent.
  • derekcbart · 1 year ago
    Here's another possibly good target.

Christopher Eastland is one of the partners from SEIDLER EQUITY PARTNERS (http://www.sepfunds.com/index.shtml) and he gave $5,000.
  • derekcbart · 1 year ago
Andrew Wallet is one of the named partners of the Hinojosa & Wallet law firm (http://www.handwlaw.com/) and he gave $3,000.
  • derekcbart · 1 year ago
    Here's another.

Paul Davis is the Chief Financial Officer of Tennenbaum Capital Partners, LLC (https://www.tennenbaumcapital.com/) and he gave $2,500.

BTW, I'm just posting all of the ones that seem relevant because they are higher ups in larger companies that we might be able to target successfully.
  • derekcbart · 1 year ago
Next we have Michael Fitzgerald who is one of the partners at CORBIN FITZGERALD & ATHEY LLP (http://www.corbfitzlaw.com/) and he gave $2,500.
  • mirele · 1 year ago
$22,200 given from my home zip code in Mesa, AZ! And there are zip codes that gave even more money.

http://mormonsfor8.com/ is a resource where volunteers have identified Mormons who have contributed to Yes on 8.
  • Outspoken1 · 1 year ago
Grass roots boycotts may not have much effect in the overall scheme of things, but they do help you to define your views and issues. Every since the KKK and religious right moved to Colorado Springs and took over (my condolences to those progressives living there), I refuse to spend one thin dime in the Springs or local area. I do not visit Garden of the Gods, the Air Force Academy, Pikes Peak, etc. If I have to drive through the city, I plan my food and gasoline purchases outside of the city. Yea, it's minor, but I feel I am making my money go to less hateful folks.

I will not stay in a Marriott, nor a Quality Inn (they were very hateful to Obama supporters in Indiana - would not rent them a room pointing to the sign "We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone.'). I do support Sears, who helps our troops; Costco who is generally a 'blue [progressive]' company, etc. You get the idea.
  • SkyjackPfippil · 1 year ago
I totally agree. What do you think about "boycotts" of individuals? That's what I have trouble with.
  • Soaplady57 · 1 year ago
Here's a place in Palm Springs that donated money. Apparently they are NOT Gay-friendly either:

Anyone who didn't give money to No on 8 needs to think twice before attacking those who gave to Yes on 8. Yes they're hateful people -- but we could really have used your help when it counted.
  • gwyneth · 1 year ago
Well nobody had any idea that Californians could have fallen for Mormon's line of crap. I mean we never dreamed it!!

Its a good lesson to learn and we learned it.

  • SkyjackPfippil · 1 year ago
Well, that's not true at all. Prop 8 was losing soundly during the summer, but after Yes on 8's well-funded, well-organized campaign, it was polling even or winning a few weeks before the election. Also, this legislation in its previous incarnation had passed here with a solid majority.

With all due respect, if you never dreamed it, you weren't paying close attention.
  • Soaplady57 · 1 year ago
Talk about donating a LOT of money, the Hales Family - Nancy and Roy BOTH donated over $10,000!! I think they may be over that limit even but they must have a successful business in both CA and UT.

    http://www.plantfloor.com/ut/ducworksinc.htm

Ducworkisinc.com is what was listed on the donations themselves.

Wow! Horrible economic times. There are more LBGT people than Mor(m)ons. We have your names and the names of your businesses. Great time to pick on gays Mor(m)ons. Utah relies on tourism. In a bad economy, people won't be skiing. You are so Scrutahed!!!
  • gregj · 1 year ago
Unbelievable. Every person in the film industry who reads this, please join me in condemning Mr. Raddon's advocacy of bigotry. He has with his fellow Mormons succeeded in denying me from marrying my partner of 17 years. We've been together in sickness and in health. Never bothered anyone. Just lived our lives quietly. He has now managed to make me a second class citizen. He may say that "America's majority" has spoken. That I should get over it. Move on. But I wonder what Mr. Raddon would say if there was a out of state funded and organized proposition in Utah (or anywhere) that would strip Mormons of the right to marry. If 52 % approved it after a campaign of lies and fear mongering. I wonder if Mr. Raddon would just "get over it" if he would just shut up and "move on."
Mr. Raddon has his right to speak for intolerance, I have my right to speak for my civil rights and ask every person to join me in speaking against him.

It is SERIOUSLY UNCOOL to target people like this for their democratic advocacy. I was opposed to Prop. 8, I live in Massachusetts and celebrate the fact that ALL people have equal marriage rights, but it is NOT kosher to use these databases to demonize people. This inevitably will turn against us; do we really want to encourage people to, say, target us for who we give money to? You have crossed a line here; you're very, very wrong
