The LA Times (despite it's similarity in name to the NY Times) is a big city supermarket rag. It's been getting worse for quite a few years now. It used to have a point of view and now just reads like a "I don't have an actual thought in my head" high-school paper. I remember reading awhile back that whoever took over the stewardship of the paper wanted to take the paper away from it's left-leaning and make it more moderate. Well, in doing so, they've stripped it of any thought, POV, or respectability. My assumption is that putting Goldberg ("iceberg, it all sounds the same" to quote an old joke) is an attempt to rev up sales. It ain't going to work in liberal L.A.

Another once - respected paper has now gone to trash. We , as an informed populace, will now be subjected to less journalism and more of the Zell/Murdock/Scaffe trash produced by money. These nuts believe that their money entitles them to an audience under the guise of once-respected news sources. If you tracked back to the original LA Times opinion piece, the comments on that article indicate that no one fell for it. Couple hundred comments and I didn't see anything that had any praise, not a single good word for Goldberg.
I will since that is lacking. Guy has good command of the English language. Unfortunately he turns that skill to the dark side.
LA Times has sadly fallen far, far from grace. With all their staff cuts, pretty clear that Goldberg is all they can afford, a guy who doesn't make any grammar, punctuation or spelling mistakes and yet isn't worth more than a salary of $50 a year. Then again, how many years has it been since they fired Robert Sheer? And we know that wasn't over the vastly excessive salary that Sheer earned.

All the good reporters, like Robin Wright, took a hike.
Tribune had a bottom line philosphy--forget foreign news, cover the local garden shows and lean toward "enlighted" conservatism.
Like the Repub Party, it got more and more right-wing over the past 8 years, until it became very neocon and supply side-ish. (It still keeps the Fundies an arms-length away, tho.)
I don't expect new owner, Sam Zell, to change that too much. He became the 54th richest man on Forbes' list based on his real estate deals and has given mucho money to Conservative causes.

Wasn't there some brouhaha regarding Zell when Tribune took over the LA Times -- some financial sludge he was involved in that sort of put an initial damper on his buying the Times? I sort of remember that the sale wasn't going to go through because of it.
The fact that we are noticing a leaning to the right of this paper escapes an ultra-right, Bush-loving acquaintance of mine who spits everytime the LA Times is mentioned. It's happening all over the internet John. Local News market web sites ( WTOP.com or Washington Post.com) that allow comments on news items are a flooded with racial, hateful and stereotypical comments about Obama.
These websites are letting these comments fester and fester and build and build all summer long. DO we need this HATE to continue day in and day out? These sites DON'T ban these same posters.
Just go to these web sites and see how the MSM is letting the vile , hatefilled ( and some posters actually want harm to come to Obama.) comments fester.

i saw that article, started to read it, but within a few lines, i grew suspicious, then looked and saw the author.... didn't bother to finish the article... i will say that the same paper was big on headlines saying obama's numbers 'don't add up' experts seem to agree that obama's plans won't work, and one about how mc cain promises to 'balance the budget in 4 years'
funny, the same paper quotes those hostages released from FARC, calling FARC terrorists with a capital 'T', it all seems sort of 'faux like' to me....

Corporations have one reason for existing: to make a profit. If Goldberg's drivel sells papers and pays for Goldberg's salary, then, by golly, the LA Times succeeds. If Soupy Sales wrote dialog with White Fang and Black Tooth in a column, and the paper's sales increased, Soupy and the puppet gang would be elevated to the Editorial Board.
