AMERICAblog: Larry Craig really is retiring

  • Dave of the Jungle · 1 year ago
    Be sure to visit the Larry Craig Memorial Bathroom Stall this summer and attend the Republican National Convention.
  • Chris From Maine · 1 year ago
    something tells me he will be at the Repub convention this year, just to "reminisce".
  • ndtovent · 1 year ago
    oh, i'll bet he'll find a way to stay in the senate (the ol perv)
  • ndtovent · 1 year ago
    "i AM not gay...I have never BEEN...gay...."
  • ndtovent · 1 year ago
    John should have an audiocast available of this speech so we can listen while we blog this thread.. that'd be a nice touch (figuratively speaking)
  • GrantinHouston · 1 year ago
    That makes 6 Republican incumbent senators not running this fall compared to ZERO Democratic incumbents retiring. In the house, 26 Republicans aren't running for re-election compared to 7 Democrats. If the Democratic Party doesn't go into melt down, maybe some real majorities can be won.
  • constantcomment · 1 year ago
    so who are the democrats placing on the ballot???
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
    This really makes me angry. The man was, I believe, found guilty. That makes him a law breaker and instead of being kicked out of the Senate he is RETIRING with full pension including health care. Must be nice to be a Senator and thumb your nose at the judicial system.

  • 1billinnj2 · 1 year ago
    he is now a member of our gay community. if we like it or not.
  • Dave of the Jungle · 1 year ago
    But not an honest one.
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
    On the bright side, Larry Flynt hasn't offered Senator Craig a nude layout in Hustler...or Juggs.
  • scottinsf · 1 year ago
    Oh great, there went my dinner.
  • 1billinnj2 · 1 year ago
    how do you refresh the page. i miss the old haloscan, you could refresh and leave the comment open while you looked at other sites. how do we do that now. please explain lucy
  • Jump to the Left · 1 year ago
    I think 3 ways:
    "Right-click, Refresh"
    F5
    Refresh button at top of browser.
    :)
  • mirth · 1 year ago
    Oh! The right-click, Refresh is the easiest of all.
    Thanks, Jump.
  • Jump to the Left · 1 year ago
    I learned everything I know about blogging from someone or other here. :D
  • ndtovent · 1 year ago
    the only way I know is to type 'control R' or click on the refresh icon at the top...but you still can't keep more than one topic comment window open simultaneously, which is annoying.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
    As much as I cussed at, to, and about Haloscan I think I miss it. I hate this way of following comments.
  • Jump to the Left · 1 year ago
    John said he was just trying out the threaded (with replies) commenting format, and if we all hate it, he'll get rid of that feature.
  • mirth · 1 year ago
    Hit f5 or control/r or (in IE) click the green Refresh arrows on the top screen toolbar.
    To return to the Homepage, click the AB logo.

  • Jump to the Left · 1 year ago
    Probably a halo hiccup. Try refreshing. I have to do that sometimes, too. All these commenting programs have their "issues."

    (And, hi!)
  • devis1 · 1 year ago
    It got to the point I copied and pasted my comment a few times and finally decided it wasn't all that earth shattering a comment....!!
    I was switched back and forth from IE and Firefox and then gaveup.
  • Jump to the Left · 1 year ago
    Was it telling you, "Duplicate comment, you already said that" ? Sometimes, if a pasted comment fails the first time for some reason, you can never post it until you change one letter or something because it thinks it's a duplicate. Halo glitch.

    Sorry!

  • devis1 · 1 year ago

  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago

    Anyone, but me, find it strange that when it was reported Obama's passport had been compromised then all of the sudden, the State Department BENT OVER BACKWARDS to immediately claim Hillary and McCain had the same thing happen? Who did this benefit? Why, it neutralized the whole Obama being made a victim thing which would have benefitted him tremendously. Instead, the Bush Admin fell all over themselves to say, "Well, Hillary and McCain had their information exposed, so we weren't trying to attack Obama politically!" Well, I'm still thinking they are hoping to gather damaging information on Obama, and I'm not so sure the Clintons aren't involved in this. Conspiracy theory? Probably, but it seems plausible.
  • devis1 · 1 year ago
    Was my first thought. Too convenient. Especially when they couldn't say if others who had dropped out also had their files compromised.
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
    Absolutely!

    Big scramble to neutralize the whole thing...

    In fact, the media fell for it BIG TIME! Instead of concentrating on whether or not Obama had been targetted, the media started doing stories on "internet security" and general information on possible security comrpomises. They totally skipped questioning the motivations and possible coverup of what was really going on with Obama's breach of security. It all became "ARE YOUR RECORDS SAFE?!!?" blah blah blah...

  • Jump to the Left · 1 year ago
    :)
  • Sarah B. · 1 year ago
    Hi, Chandler!

    I share some of your frustrations with this new format -- perhaps, because I remember the early days of Ablog when we had HaloScan plus Avatars! It was all so simple then....and it worked!

    Actually, you do have the "clout" to remove those obnoxious underlines from your online moniker -- I had the same problem when I first registered yesterday, and Jump was kind enough to guide me to the easy fix. I probably would have figured it out eventually, but I was so exhausted just trying to get the registration to work for me using IE 7 (which didn't work) and then going to Firefox (which did work) that I didn't have much patience left to "play" around with all the bells and whistles.

    All you need to do is click on your picture and go up to "Profile" and update your Profile by changing your user name -- just type in your name the way that you want it to appear on screen. It worked for me. The registration nazi told me that I had to be Sarah_B, or else I couldn't play. I was not amused.
    :)
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  • Jump to the Left · 1 year ago
    Sarah,
    You are so kind and helpful! Chandler had -24 points after last night's clout attacks, and I have read on the disqus site that certain privileges are linked to some threshold amount of clout. So I'm not sure what happened.
    In any case, nice to see you. This election is driving me out of my mind.
    :)
  • Jump to the Left · 1 year ago
    Chandler,
    FIX YOUR NAME! :)
  • scottinsf · 1 year ago
    How the hell did you get to -24?
  • An_American_Karol · 1 year ago
    good grief, I didn't notice his points. ouch. Someone has it in for him.
  • Jump to the Left · 1 year ago
    You were in the same shape late last night... I tried to help out. It was a systematic point reduction for every single comment made, for a number of commenters. I spent over an hour putting those points back. Total abuse of the clout system.
  • devis1 · 1 year ago
    I am guilty as charged. I was deducting from the person who kept touting Drudge and hating big time on Hillary. When they suggested we team up with Drudge and Michelle Malkin, that was the final straw. Every time they/it commented I took a point off comment.
  • Jump to the Left · 1 year ago
    Yesterday, I went from a higher positive clout number to -14 in a matter of 3 minutes, one point deducted from every comment I had made. I got a point deducted from comments where I answered questions about how to use the comment system. Your numbers and Luna's were as bad as mine. Karol and Mirth had two people doing it to them. I tried to get everyone I noticed who'd been slammed the one point back I could give. I counted at least 9 people I observed it happen to.
  • devis1 · 1 year ago
    Wow, Thanks!! It's an honor to be as BAD as you!!
  • Jump to the Left · 1 year ago
    LOL!
    Thank you. It was a comfort to know that at least I was in good company.
  • devis1 · 1 year ago
    So much for sleeping. O/T but I really liked when Richardson, in his endorsement, spoke about Obama helping him out during one of the debates. They were next to each other during the debate and Richardson had quipped about the fact that he wasn't getting any questions. The two were chatting while the moderator moved on. The next thing Richardson knew he was being asked a question, he hadn't heard it but Obama whispered "Katrina" and Richardson was able to go on. Can you imagine Hillary doing that??!!
  • An_American_Karol · 1 year ago
    I wonder if there is some way John can get rid of the point system.
  • Jump to the Left · 1 year ago
    It's great in concept, but when you have one or two people who are so willing to abuse it, it's not particularly meaningful.
  • An_American_Karol · 1 year ago
    Did you get a hidden reply, Jump?
  • Jump to the Left · 1 year ago
    What's a hidden reply? I'm learning this as I go. :)
  • An_American_Karol · 1 year ago
    I don't know, Jump. But when you hit reply to someone's comment, when you get the textbox to reply the word reply changes to hide.
  • Jump to the Left · 1 year ago
    Oh, I figured that one out. :) If you change your mind and decide not to leave a comment, click hide, and it will "hide" the comment box. The comment box toggles on and off between "reply" and "hide" clicks.
    :D
  • scottinsf · 1 year ago
    It looks like the 'hide' just hides the text box for replies and doesn't actually hide anything from anybody except yourself.
    If that makes any sense.....
  • Jump to the Left · 1 year ago
    That's EXACTLY what it does.
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
    jUMP,
    You know, it's possible that people aren't misusing it but are just confused about how to use this thing. I didn't figure out the up and down arrows until just now, so I am sure I'm not unique on that, so I'll bet we are all going to have odd points for a while to come.
  • Jump to the Left · 1 year ago
    I watched it happen, and it sure didn't look like an accident. Particularly in the case of Karol and Mirth. They got systematically savaged by two people, at the same time, straight through all the threads. But I think you probably are correct that there is a lot to figure out, and some of the things people do or don't do are not intentional, as we are all figuring this out.
    (Great to see you!)
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
    Nice to see you too, even if my eyes are somewhat crossed at the moment.
    Listen, you know how things go in here, there are some folks who just like to dump on people and that isn't going to stop now...and this new point system is just begging for them to abuse it, but I think John can see who is abusing the system and can ban them. At least that's the way they do it over at TPM.
  • Coming Undone · 1 year ago
  • Coming Undone · 1 year ago
  • devis1 · 1 year ago
    Is a hidden comment when they 'reply' to you directly with email? I thought I had emails showing replies that weren't shown here. The system locked up so often they may have been there and I missed them. Does anyone know how to avoid refreshing and bouncing back to the last comment you made and then having to scroll up? And the text size here doesn't stay large, keep having to move up-annoying on the eyes.
  • Chris From Maine · 1 year ago
    I want to VOICE my opinion on DSIQUS, it bites!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    This is what I wrote to the people of DSIQUS (aaaah who cares how you spell thier stupid name)
    ---------------------------------
    You forgot one thing in this whole project. It's a principle in any business model.
    MAKE IT EASY FOR THE CLIENT TO DO BUSINESS WITH YOU!!!
    You've definitely failed in that effort. I'm just being honest with you. To many bells and whistles, and "keeping my words in some central location" is creepy.
    BTW - I'm using the newest version of IE, just downloaded it. Win XP here.
    Secondly, the clout thing.... that's embarrassingly elitist. I have just as much clout with my ideas as anyone on here. Apparently I don't have enough "clout" to change my name. Turn that crap off. Its rude!
    Third, I am not able to post a comment after I have put my computer on slumber mode. I come back to ABLOG and I can't post any comments, even though your site shows im LOG"ed IN!??!???!???? I log out and still nothing, do I have to really restart my computer everytime I use your comment software????????
    Unfortunately, there is not much I can do, Ill have to suffer through like everyone else.
    High Crime & Misdemeanors.
  • devis1 · 1 year ago
    AMEN to that.
  • Jump to the Left · 1 year ago
  • Coming Undone · 1 year ago
    I had the same problem, I left my computer for a for a while and I was still logged in to Disqus but I could not bring up the comment section, so I just left it alone because it was about 4 in the morning, it was just too early to be fighting with my computer.
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
    High Crimes,
    (I guess I don't need to use your name now, do I?)
    I don't like this system either, but am hoping it gets easier as we get more familiar with it all. As far as the point system goes; other blogs have that as well but I find it obnoxious, but then again it isn't our blog.
    I am going to give it a few days and see what happens...
  • Sarah B. · 1 year ago
    High Crimes!
    I barely knew ye....
    Actually, you can "fix" your on-screen name by clicking on your picture and then going up to "Profile" and updating your Profile by changing your name -- just type in your name the way that you want it to appear on screen. I just left a note down-thread for chandler in las vegas, who was afflicted with those obnoxious underlines in his name by the registration nazi -- said nazi also forced me to register as Sarah_B, or else I couldn't "play" in this netherworld. I was not amused, to say the least. Jump was kind enough to guide me to the easy fix. So, allow me pass along the good will.
    Perhaps my least favorite "feature" is that if you start a comment and then have to answer the telephone or go downstairs to grab a snack or get a drink, when you return you are likely to find that your comment has "timed out" and has thus vanished. I've also had problems leaving the comment section to look for a link to post -- only to return to find the entire comment had vanished.
    As I mentioned to chandler, I remember the early days of Ablog when we had HaloScan plus Avatars -- and everything worked! Yes, Halo could be pissy at times, but at least if you had to leave the computer or even the comments section for a period of time, everything was still waiting for you when you returned and you could finish your comment at your leisure. It made for more thoughtful discourse and meaningful links to support your assertions. Oh, yes , I almost forgot -- I'm jonesing for the "Preview" button like you wouldn't believe.
    And the "Clout" feature must be for laughs....ya' think?
    :)
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  • Jump to the Left · 1 year ago

    What privileges does a high-yield of "Clout" points afford one -- a new toaster?

    OMG! "Clout robbers! Who would have thunk it?

    Never have trolls been so empowered -- not only do they have more "Clout" than they deserve, but now they can rob you of your "Clout" -- what a cruel world!

    Clearly, having a "Clout Count" in the negative integers is the new sign of success on Disqus! You have obviously gotten under the trolls' skins and hit the only nerve left in their nervous systems -- the mischief-making nerve.

    So, cheer up, Jump -- you are winning the "Clout" version of the Oscar, Tony, Grammy, and Emmy! Really, -23! -- I'm jealous!

  • green_libertarian · 1 year ago
    Hmmmm, comments down at least 50%. Freaks hijacking the system to downrate commenters for no reason but pure malice. Jump's at minus 23. What a fucking joke this system is. You're doing a heck of job, Johnny.
  • Jump to the Left · 1 year ago
    I'm guessing that John will figure out a way to address this. There should be a way to identify a person who does nothing but downgrade clout. And once everyone figures out what's going on and how it all works, I trust the community will handle it.
  • Sarah B. · 1 year ago
    green!

    HaloScan plus Avatars -- those were the good-old days. Halo could be difficult at times, but at least it was possible to have a chronological conversation in something resembling real time -- and this constant pinging of my gmail account is getting really annoying even though I'm happy to hear from whomever replied to my comment.

    This format seems like it was designed for some kind of online dating or flirting or pick-up blog -- I can't believe that it was ever intended for political discourse. You can't develop a train of thought, let alone follow one.
    :)
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  • devis1 · 1 year ago
    Sarah you can go into your profile settings and turn off email notification.
  • Sarah B. · 1 year ago
    Hi, devis!
    Yes, I know that I could do that, but because this format is non-chronological and replies are up, down, and all a round, it's actually nice to get the email to let me know that I've had a reply, because I would probably miss it just trying to scroll through the all the comments in a paraticular section.
    I love that pic of your very large ginger friend -- he is SO gorgeous!
  • Sarah B. · 1 year ago
    Hi, there, Polly!
    "Negative" is the new "Positive" now....
    I wonder how long it will take the site monitor(s) to ferret out the culprit(s) and expose and/or ban them. A troll would have to be extra-demented to resort to stealing other people's "Clout" points. Pathetic!
    It's good to see you, btw -- I hope that you've been well.
    :)
    Sarah,
    Sokay and you? I am hoping that John is able to get this thing under some kind of control, but I suppose that he is almost as new to this as we are.
    I'm never sure where to look for responses however, be it where I left a comment or at the top of the thread...that's what is confusing me most of all.
  • Jump to the Left · 1 year ago
    THERE ARE A LOT MORE OF US THAN THERE ARE OF THEM!
    And the really sad thing is that this person is interrupting a nice conversation. Oh well.
    Hi, Green. :)
    Damn!
    If this keeps up, I'm going to have to start downgrading my own "Clout" points just to preserve my self-esteem!
    I have a question for anyone still around. I'm on Firefox and every now and then one of my posts turns yellow.
    Does that happen when you get a response or when someone clouts you?
  • mirth · 1 year ago
    Polly, all comments turn yellow for a few secs after they appear on the thread.
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
    Mirth,
    That much I gathered, but AFTER I post for awhile...one comment will turn YELLOW and then a few minutes alter turn YELLOW again. Any idea why?
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
    My last post just turned YELLOW once again. It's the third time in a few minutes.
  • devis1 · 1 year ago
    I was sending you some clout after you posted below--I think you maybe right.
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
    Thanks, but it looks like the clouter is at it again...points going down, down, down.
    Yes, my bet is that anytime you get points in either direction, your post(s) turn yellow.
  • mirth · 1 year ago
    Hmmmmmm. That I do not know.
    I'm getting into Disqus, starting to dig some of its features, but reading comments is a challenge!
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
    Yesh, I think it turns yellow when you get clouted...
    I know, I began reading some of it and got a headache...
    LOL, so what else is new?
  • mirth · 1 year ago
    Ok, I just noticed that when I Refresh my last comment turns yellow.
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
    I know it turns yellow when you refresh, but it also turns yellow OTHER times too. I think it has to do with clouts.
  • devis1 · 1 year ago
    Polly did you turn yellow--I clouted you? Does it every time you refresh is what I've noticed..
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
    Thanks devis, but my text keeps turning yellow alot right now...I think I am under a "soft attack".
    I wonder if hard attacks hurt...
    China Ups Death Toll In Tibet
    By REUTERS
    Published: March 22, 2008
    Filed at 3:28 a.m. E
    KANGDING, China (Reuters) - China said 19 people were killed in riots in the Tibetan capital last week and official media warned against the unrest spreading to the northwest region of Xinjiang, where Uighur Muslims bridle under Chinese control.
    And this consistent miscount from the people who invented the abacus and produce 99% of all calculators on earth.
  • Jump to the Left · 1 year ago
    Consistent miscount... yes, a real problem... Then again, we don't even bother to count Iraqi civilian deaths. We just sort of say, "why bother?"
    I've felt that black uniforms or black arm bands would be harder for the Chinese leaders to explain than the absence of the athletes.
  • devis1 · 1 year ago
    "When the U.S. hosted the Summer Games in 1984, we weren't cracking down on Tibetan Buddhists. We were slaughtering Central American Christians, among other groupings, via our client armies and security forces. Scores of them. Rivers choked with mutilated bodies. Mass graves. The whole bloody bit. The key difference is that we were bringing them freedom and religious tolerance."
    Maybe things will change this time, one can only hope....
    That's an idea, unrepentant expat, but I'm thinking $ damage to the Chinese. Then there is the idea of protecting the lungs of our athletes.
    You people are a lot of fun, and you are good company for withstanding clout attacks. In fact, you make a clout attack an entertaining affair!
    No matter what happens to your clout, I appreciate your insights and humor very much.
    What does Follow mean on the profile page?
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
    Mirth,
    I THINK "follow" means you get info when one of your "friends" either goes elsewhere on the web
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
    DEFINITELY, your text turns YELLOW when you have been CLOUTED.
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
    and again....
  • mirth · 1 year ago
    Ohhhh. That makes sense.
    I have been too busy to pay attention to my Profile page. I just looked in my email inbox and I had 37 replies to comments here. *laugh* Now that notification box is unchecked.
    Good question -- do you suppose that "Follow" is intended for those who are disinclined to "Lead" by any chance?
    :)
    Ms. Sarah B., I gotta give you a big phat mirth point!
  • Sarah B. · 1 year ago
    mirth
    I vastly prefer big "Phat" over "Clout" -- thanks so much for that.
    Disqus seems to do for political blogging discourse what PowerPoint has done to communication -- it kills it!
    But, at least, you get "Clout" points...or not...or have them stolen right out from under your moniker!
    :)
    On second thought, maybe "Follow" means that if you become so thoroughly attracted to another's comments, you will "Follow" him or her to the ends of the Earth....
    :)
    If this is true, then I'll be following SO many people.
  • Jump to the Left · 1 year ago
    If you choose to "follow" someone, you get their avatar on your profile page and you can click on it and see all their comments, and you can get an email any time one of them comments if you want. A person is notified when they are being followed.
    Yesterday, you, karol, me, nigel, and singing troll were all "followed" by a person. And we were all clout sucked. There is more, but I imagine you can guess the rest.
    ;)
  • Sarah B. · 1 year ago
    Jump!
    I feel compelled to submit "clout sucked" to the Oxford English Dictionary committee to be added to the new English words and phrases for 2008!
    Still, I guess it's not as bad as being "clout fucked" -- or maybe not -- who knows?
