I'm not a Donald Rumsfeld fan. But there is a decorum to an interview that was simply absent. He asked him about things that weren't in the book. Irrespective of the author, your favorite public servant, politician, etc., you could take something absent from a book any direction you wished. I had been listening to APM Marketplace Tech Report for months and just recently started listening to Marketplace. Many of the pieces I like, but this one was very disappointing. I left quite certain that it was a left-leaning production and I will likely now never be convinced it is not.

Not punishing criminals for gun crimes is common sense. Making criminals out of law-abiding citizens is moving forward. Lying and abusing your power to go after anyone who opposes your view, well that is for the children.

Sorry, I was conflating two different trips into one.

When I fly on my own dime, I try to not check a bag.

When I fly for business and have to check tools, I do that, but make sure my computer and camera are never touched by airline personnel.

That's a pet peeve of mine, mixing up "silicon" and "silicone". Similarly I always wince when I see "phosphorus" (a noun) and "phosphorous" (an adjective) confused though that's a matter of spelling and not pronunciation.

Apparently, there were same-sex unions in early Europe. Many societies in Africa had openly gay people. Some even argue that Jesus and his disciples would have been looked at as a gay group, arguing as they did against marriage and so on. In Berlin, gay men used to walk hand-in-hand. That was before the Nazis. So, unfortunately, social change is not always a matter of forward evolution. Sometimes it is a boom and bust pattern of regression-progress-regression.

What's ironic is the most vehement isolationists in 1940 were in the Republican party.

Opposition to the Lend-Lease bill was strongest among isolationist Republicans in Congress, who feared that the measure would be "the longest single step this nation has yet taken toward direct involvement in the war abroad." When the House of Representatives finally took a roll call vote on February 9, 1941, the 260 to 165 vote fell largely along party lines. Democrats voted 238 to 25 in favor and Republicans 24 in favor and 135 against.

The vote in the Senate, which took place a month later, revealed a similar partisan divide. 49 Democrats (79 percent) voted "aye" with only 13 Democrats (21 percent) voting "nay." In contrast, 17 Republicans (63 percent) voted "nay" while 10 Senate Republicans (37 percent) sided with the Democrats to pass the bill.

I remember in the novel "Gorky Park" a mention that locals would spread rumours that the African students had small tails to disincentivise girls from going out with them. It was a fictional but Martin Cruz-Smith spent many years in the USSR before he wrote the novel. The anecdote always had a ring of truth to me. A sort of combination of massive ignorance and unreconstructed racism.

Do you know what's especially ridiculous about this charge? If Pres. Obama did make the sort of melodramatic, forcible-feeble display of military might that Republicans love, the GOP politicians would be howling to the heavens that Obama was "wagging the dog" and trying to distract us all from his administration's corruption and all the rest of it. And there'd be darker accusations too, I'm sure--perhaps that Obama and his "Muslim Brotherhood" friends' real plan was to waste American lives and American strength in order to lay us open to conquest by the infidel hordes. Certainly too we'd get one pompous speech after another from Sen. McCain and every other Republican who fancies himself an expert on foreign policy about the grave responsibility of committing American troops and the necessity of strict congressional oversight and all of those other things that were supposed to be swept aside as outdated relics from the prelapsarian days before 9/11 when Bush le petit needed to wage unlimited war to protect ARE FREEDOM.

For years I've only flown South X Southwest and have always had a good experience with them. They have great online fares and usually have an attendant pick of the mic and deliver one song, which is fun! I do admit to impatience with all of that carry on stuff!

Couldn't agree more. Motorists just don't understand that bikes don't behave like cars. It is automobiles that are dangerous to pedestrians, cycles and pollute the city.
