AMERICAblog: Leaked Obama Transcript Explains Rick Warren Decision

    A+. clever. devastating. 2 with 1 shot.
  • Deacon_Blues · 1 year ago
The trouble with stupid decisions like this is that it's tough to back out from them; he's damned if he does (with the Republicans and their media lackeys) and he's damned if he doesn't (with the progressive blogosphere). Is this reflective of his real feelings? I don't know. I don't know if I want to know. Maybe he'll do something proactive (like getting rid of don't ask/don't tell) to make it up to us. Sigh. The next four years aren't going to be much easier than the last for my blood pressure.

The snark-fu is strong in this one.

    :)
  • Chit · 1 year ago
Bwhahahahaha. Oh, don't you feel like a fool, now, Mr. Aravosis? Thank you so much for all your help in electing what's turning out to be essentially the SAME OLD THING. Sucker!
  • Rab · 1 year ago
It still is tough being a hillbot isn't it?
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
    Clearly.
  • sandra · 1 year ago
great article....thanks, john. you've put it in perspective. now seriously, why would obama do this? doesn't he remember being suckered by the "cone of silence" at saddleback?
  • Griffon · 1 year ago
This is by no means the first time Obama has 'disappointed' supporters expecting him to follow through on his campaign pledges. He followed his primary victory with a vote favoring telecom immunity after promising something very different. He 'adjusted' his opposition to offshore drilling. He appointed Ken Salazar to head the Interior. I don't think this will be the last time Obama puzzles and angers his supporters, having sent clear messages all along. Obama is squandering a wealth of goodwill in dribs and drabs, bleeding off the enthusiasm; to be replaced by...consternation.

    Meet the new boss....?
  • Atlanta Jim · 1 year ago
It just makes me sad. Maybe I had too many hopes. I just heard Obama has also asked Joseph Lowry from Atlanta to speak. Again , another "don't equate the gay rights movement to the African-American movement" individual.

My spouse and I got married in San Francisco in October, with such hope. The hope is continuing to fade tonight.
  • Sigh · 1 year ago
Not fair - Lowery is a HUGE gay rights supporter and gay marriage supporter! He is for civil rights, period.

As a white lesbian, I do NOT think you can "equate" the black civil rights movement to the gay one. We've never been bought and sold, enslaved, or forced to sit on the back of the bus! I don't think we get anywhere by trying to say our movements are "the same." I HATE when white gays do that....

But, Lowery is a huge gay rights supporter!
  • Steve_in_CNJ · 1 year ago
oh PLEASE don't do that. are you going to award suffer points to victims of discrimination? what a waste of breath.
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
Well, Coretta Scott King equated our two movements, said the struggle was the same and the same movement, and that's good enough for me.
  • wmforr · 1 year ago
"EQUATE" is not what we are doing when we point out similarities. This is not "Queen for a Day" [note to young'uns: a '50s TV show in which three women recounted all the disasters that had happened to them and the audience voted for the one who had suffered the most. She won a car and a vacation and stuff and the others got cockie-doo-doo.

But too many people in the U.S. point to financially well-off gays and think they need no civil rights because they have some money. They haven't SUFFERED enought for us to give them a prize.

How about two thousand years of being burned at the stake? Does that count? Or is that okay, because those doing the burning were acting out of "deeply held religious beliefs"?
  • Katie · 1 year ago
As a heterosexual woman I am broken hearted and pissed about this choice. It says more than words ever can as to the mind of Obama. As a huge supporter of his and a defender and supporter of ALL gay rights this makes me sick and am hoping that the backlash will be enough to stop this travesty. We have had too many years of these hateful , sick preachers --what the hell is going on with this ???Had to watch Salazar and Vilsack and truth be told Clinton and have tried to understand this. But this goes too far and what can we do???? Obama got a huge mandate and this is what we get?? I am tired and worn out with this political bullshit and being excited about a man that I thought was a change agent--Warren needs to be outed and big time about his stated positions. And why in the hell are they friends???
  • jwazzz · 1 year ago
Thank you, Katie - you took the words right out of my mouth. As a gay man who worked endless hours for Obama, I feel betrayed today.
  • Sigh · 1 year ago
He ALSO chose Joseph Lowery to do the benediction.....Joseph Lowery, the famed civil rights hero who is black AND a huge huge supporter of gay rights, gay marriage, etc! So, why are we fussing SO much over Warren, yet not giving ANY credit over Lowery?

Yeah, you're right, it's a balancing act. So where is the racist and the anti-Semite, you know, to balance things out?
  • tlsintx · 1 year ago
precisely. the time has come to stop taking this shit.
  • lucky hussein · 1 year ago
EXCELLENT! well done with humor. Toasted them, I'd say. As a resident of CA, I am most amused by your trashing of feinstein - that neo-liberal sob.
  • Sigh · 1 year ago
WHY are we jumping to the conclusion that this is some "embracing" of anti-gay views...but, yet no one is saying this must mean that Obama is pro-life??? Grow up, people!
  • Indigo · 1 year ago
Um . . . it is an "embrace" of anti-gay views. Now about the "grow up" thing, is that what they're saying in the 7th grade these days?
  • houstonray · 1 year ago
Awesomely done John! The snark is with you on that one!! ;-)
  • mirror · 1 year ago
Fuckin' brilliant John. Really capsulizes it in a stark way. thanks
  • usagi · 1 year ago
Yep, sounds about exactly right to me.
  • Goober Peas · 1 year ago
Excellent! John, you so nailed it. Congrats!
  • Indigo · 1 year ago
Before there was Obama, there was HIllary. Along came Caroline and endorsed Obama. I went along with that. Many of us did. Now Obama's elected, Hillary's got the Secretary of State nomination, Caroline wants to be a senator, and we got the screw. Okay, since the shift to Obama started with a Kennedy, let it end with a Kennedy. Caroline for senate? Just say no.
  • Bart · 1 year ago
As far as I'm concerned now, Obama is one son of a bitch and that's not a compliment. This guy is a disgusting opportunist who is only surpassed by his Republican opponents. How can we get a viable third party in this county?
  • JeffNYC · 1 year ago
John--your misogyny comes through AGAIN. Even in just, you are blaming "the woman" and not Obama himself. In your version, he is a good-natured dupe of the evil bitch, just as you always painted him the noble victim of the evil bitch during the primaries. You once said SHE would say or do anything to be elected. Do you now see HE was the one who would do or say anything to be elected? We're in for 8 years of this.
  • Bart · 1 year ago
Brother Rick might say, "By their fruit you shall know them." I'd say this fruit is rotten to the core. It shows that Brother Barack plans to pander to America's religious fruitcakes at the expense of gays just as he did during his campaign in -- was it South Carolina? After all, who else do progressive gays have to vote for -- they're a captive block so why pander to them -- fuk em. So how does it feel ,gay brothers and sisters, to be fuked by Barack? Is it as good as being fuked by Bush?
  • told_you_so_john · 1 year ago
I told you that Obama was no friend of gay people, and that Hillary was a better choice, but you wouldn't listen! Instead you put the Obamahead Bot Blinders on and ignored every piece of fact and evidence before you! It didn't matter that Obama's outreach was an ex-gay fool. It didn't matter that Obama used slippery language when discussing gay issues. It didn't matter that Obama had refused to protect womens rights over their own bodies and came out and publicly said that he thought there should be some restrictions on abortion. All you could do is carry water for republicans and spread one anti-clinton talking point after another.

You fooled yourself and you refused to listen! Now we're stuck with Obama and he frankly doesn't give a shit because now your opinion is as irrelevant to him as it was to me in the primaries! I lost what little respect I had for you and the rest of the completely insane obamaheads during the primaries. Now frankly I'm enjoying watching all of your heads explode as you realize Obama is "shock" a politician that used you and you were too freaking stupid to realize it! You are the real loser, and unfortunately you helped make sure America would lose with you! Good job! You're now not very different from those that enabled GWB to come to office out of your blindness and willingness to ignore the 'facts' about Your Guy!

All of the rest of us that are now 'stuck' with 'your' choice can do is hope he does a better job than GWB - that shouldn't be too hard - and enjoy watching your heads explode as you realize you were duped!

    Aravosis The All Powerful!

    Hahahaha. You're funny.
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
Yes, Obama is president because of me, only me, and don't you forget it. I voted 60 million times, it was fun (I am from Chicago).
  • EdNSted · 1 year ago
Sarah Posner over at The Nation has done a pretty good job of explaining the significance of this choice and why it really does matter:

What's the Matter With Rick Warren?

"Warren represents the absolute worst of the Democrats' religious outreach, a right-winger masquerading as a do-gooder anointed as the arbiter of what it means to be faithful. Obama's religious outreach was intended, supposedly, to make religious voters more comfortable with him and feel included in the Democratic Party. But that outreach now has come at the expense of other people's comfort and inclusion, at an event meant to mark a turning point away from divisive politics. "
  • Mighty · 1 year ago
That was quite funny. I liked it.

Can anyone explain to me why having Rick Warren is any different than having a preacher from a "christian identity" church speak? Might as well let Reverend Phelps give the damn thing.

I am going to HOPE Obama will repeal DADT, make adding lgbt to hate crimes legislation, ENDA, helping to remove DOMA. If he does these things I'll be ok but if Rick Warren is a sign of things to come then cry havok and let slip the dogs of war.
  • Georg Heimdal · 1 year ago
John, I'm a heterosexual guy who reads your blog on a daily basis. I generally read your gay activism posts for their information value more than for how it impacts me personally. This is my first comment here.

A few minutes ago I fired up Safari and started checking out my regular blog reads for the night. I read this post first and then some recommended diaries over at The Daily Kos. Jeez. Bummer. I just had to come back here and leave this comment.

In my opinion you are so right on target about this Rick Warren controversy and that whole group of jackasses trying to downplay this insulting turn of events is so painfully Missing. The. Fucking. Point.

They all wannabe "voices of reason and leadership" for the netroots community and so they're dredging up paper thin arguments giving Obama cover on this thing. But, there is no morally good argument for why this invite is O.K. Plus, Obama gets what Obama wants. He doesn't want or deserve cover.

Thanks for opening my eyes a little bit wider. And I sure hope you prevail in getting your message out there.
  • mirth · 1 year ago
    Pidoublesed. Royally.
  • UncleGlenny · 1 year ago
    A move of sheer genius!

Obviously he can't disinvite Warren; that would be giving in to the Homosexual Terrorists (c.f. Pat Boone, Chuck Norris, WingNutDaily)

And when he doesn't, the Religious Right will feel all warm and fuzzy about how Obama stood up to the locust storm of the Crazy Liberal Bloggers (c.f. Lieberman) and the Homosexual Terrorists.

I'd love to join the group but it hasn't been approved on the My.BarackObama.com website. All that appears is a message that the group will be published online once it's been approved by a moderator.

letting someone that is such a divider, and also someone that is so aggressive against my right to equal life to do this is so sad to me just words cannot explain this, to me it is like having a swastika on the stage and saying that we need to come together it is sick to me just to sick
  • dancinfool · 1 year ago
What a great article. I do love me some satire. :-)
  • Ron Tunning · 1 year ago
Sorry, John, I loathed the piece.

It suggests that Obama was not in charge of the decision, which flies in the face of all that we know about him, and credits DiFi with far more than she's capable. I realize it was satire, but for me it lacks the necessary, incisive, sardonic twist.
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
I know, I realize later that it kind of makes it sound like DiFI's fault, and I'm sure it was, but he agreed. But I do think it has enough wit :-)
  • gonoles84 · 1 year ago
Way to go, John. Very nicely done.

    Hi John,
At the risk of pissing of one of my favorite bloggers, I hope you'll read this:

    It's a possibility...
  • Gary SF · 1 year ago
Between Obama and McCain, the choice of who would be better for the US was never in question. But that never meant that the gay community would get a president who is NOT homophobic. Obama can't get beyond his homophobia to 'allow us' to marry. That being said, I would probably hate most anyone who would offer a prayer. So even thought this stings a little, I'm not going to get too worked up.
  • RitornaVincitor · 1 year ago
What if it had been Pat Robertson delivering the invocation? Would that have worked you up?
  • Gary SF · 1 year ago
Nope. In general, religions are homophobic. They are separated by degrees of homophobia. And I can't feel betrayed by someone (Obama) with whom I had no trust - on gay issues anyway.

And to all who belong to 'accepting and welcoming' churches, I salute you, but you are the minority so my 'in general' statement stands.
  • Webster · 1 year ago
    Good points.
  • sigh · 1 year ago
There are *plenty* of good churches, ministers, even theologies. It wouldn't be hard to fine one of those religious leaders to deliver the invocation (symbolically very important in an inauguration the Obama people are obviously pulling all the stops for). At the least, pick someone less hateful, who doesn't stand against what so many Americans, Obama included, stand for. It's an awful beacon of change and hope.
  • RitornaVincitor · 1 year ago
You and I may agree on this. But I find it troubling enough to be very concerned. I was passionately for Hillary, and for quite a while had grown angry with Obama. The McClurkin affair had tipped me off early on. But after Hillary's defeat I put it all aside. And now I realize just how much of an Obama fan I had become, because this really stings.
  • Webster · 1 year ago
Great piece of writing, John. Too bad Obama had to put you in a place where you had to write it.
  • gerry · 1 year ago
Good work, John. Very good work.

    Thank you
  • Badger3k · 1 year ago
You couldn't just post it here? After one too many anti-science bits from that site, I gave up on seeing anything worthwhile there and would rather not add to their traffic. Anyplace else we can read it?
  • hehe · 1 year ago
Can't imagine Hillary asking that f*kr to pray at her inauguration.

As much as I appreciate you, John. You were wrong about her. Gotcha.
  • sigh · 1 year ago
So, Obama has shown himself to be, as some of us said even early in the campaign "conciliatory to a fault". He can make bedfellows with the worst bigots and militarists and neoliberals, keep his enemies closer than his friends, and cozy up to republicans. But, will he (or Democrats in general) stand strongly against them in the interest of the people? That is yet to be demonstrated.
  • michael_carr · 1 year ago
    Yawn.
  • TomJoad · 1 year ago
Okay...it's time for the "real deal" now. The last three elections (especially the last two) we have all more or less accepted that "they are just saying that to appease the swing voters". True or not, that time is over. No more passes. I am not saying be totally "GOP" and just freeze out the other side, I am saying STICK TO THE PRINCIPLES and when they overlap, be gracious, but there are no more free rides..."oh, he's now just showing he can accept other viewpoints in contrast to Bush"

Bullshit. This stuff has consequences people. People get lives ruined, die, become killers, make matters worse, etc. as a result.

They've had their turn, and screwed the pooch in technicolor. Fucked up everything. The time has come to stop pretending dogshit is as valuable as a diamond.

    Hate politics, NO MORE
discrimination of human beings: NO MORE
using terror, in the form of armys that kill, oppress populations; NO MORE (in our name)
pretening ALL sides are valid: NO MORE

checking results of policy honestly and evaluating: TIME HAS COME
listening to PEOPLE: TIME HAS COME

No more free rides for Obama. Let's try not to micro-observe where every movement or tic means something, but on the other hand, his choices will have consequences.

All leaders live in bubbles. Bush's was smoked glass he couldn't even see out of, lets hope Obamas is transparent so he can at least see the reaction to his choices.
  • mystand · 1 year ago
I am strongly in support of obama's choice of Rick warren, let Americans be wise, look at the animals, the dogs, cats, wild life to say the list, they do not mate with same sex, they are wiser than humans, it is a shame, let the gays and lesbians go get some help and run off those demons of insanity.

Done. Betrayed? You betcha. At least with Bush, I knew we were getting someone who would destroy our country.
