Short list? Sounds discriminatory. Is she shorter than Shalala or Reich? Doesn't seem possible!

(You know, they got no reason to live, them .)

" but it is one hell of a step forward for civil rights and "change," and it's one hell of a comeback to anyone who tries to claim that Obama isn't coming through on his support for the entire civil rights community."

    Excellent Statement John.
    Thank You!!!!!

Yep, one token will really make a difference. Obama stated in his interview on MTV that he is personally against same sex marriage because "God is in the mix".

He is better than McCain, but Obama has no great love for the LGBT community. Those who worship Obama with cult like devotion really scare me.

As a gay person that has been "out" since 1964, I look forward to the day that a man or woman sexual orientation is not part of ANY equation or discussion in a job or position consideration whether in government or business. I look forward to the day that we worry about the federal civil rights of gay individuals ability to attain housing, and a job or other basic civil rights that all other Americans have, rather that some states where this sort of discrimination is tolerated. marriage rights? How bout some civil rights? with civil rights comes civil union and marriage and you take the fire and brimstone bullshit out of the discussion. I sincerely hope that Ms. Maxwell is qualified for the job and gets and her sexual orientation has nothing...repeat...nothing to do with or that is taken into consideration or plastered across the media.

Quite the change from the early days of the Bush administration when the headline read

Dick in line to be President.

Excellent! And Obama also approves of card signing, as well, much to the consternation of the rightwing.

I just want to comment on "Don't Ask, Don't Tell". Over ten years ago up here in Canada a complaint was filed to the Human Rights Commission from a gay man who was discriminated from joining the military due to his orientation. The Commission ruled in his favour and within days the military rewrote it's rules on allowing gays into the military. Since then the military has even covered the cost of transgendered members seeking sex changes. Aaah America, home of the free.

This could be brilliant. Not that identity politics is everything, but having a lesbian at Labor might bring movement on an opportunity that's long been neglected: forging a coalition between the labor and gay rights advocates. The issue intersection is there: unions often pay top dollar to extend same sex spousal benefits to their gay members. If gay marriage were a right, unions could save a pile of money on their health and welfare expenditures.
