AMERICAblog: Lindsey Graham: The GOP's new 'it' guy?

  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 5 months ago
Oh, sweet mercy, Miz Scarlett! Aunt Pittypat done fainted agin, and the smellin' salts just ain't waking her up! Miz Scarlett, should I get the doctor in? I been fannin' her and fannin' her, and she's just all aswoon!
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 5 months ago
    "notoriously private"

Translated thusly: I know he's gay, you know he's gay, but let's all pretend not to know or care with a cutesy Cillizzaeuphemism.
  • Mason · 5 months ago
Wow, what's with all the hateful comments about effeminate men? I know Graham is has a rotten record on gay issues (and most everything else), but why insult his prissiness? Why does a minority group always have to pick out subgroups to insult? I'm a pretty effeminate gay man, and I get shit for it from more butch guys all the time. You want respect for your differences? Respect mine, too.
  • Mike_in_the_Tundra · 5 months ago
Mason, a "friend" once told me that people on the space station could see that I was gay. I can see your point. I can also see why Lindsay angers everyone so much. If I had to guess, I would say that he was nothing other than a self-loathing closet case. And that is an "educated" guess. I think there are a lot of people in our community who are uncomfortable with any guy who is only a bit effeminate. I think they think they will be seen as effeminate if they are seen with someone who is effeminate. There really is a lot of prejudice in our community. People often make negative remarks about bears, leather men, twinks, etc. It's little wonder that we can't come together to fight for our rights.
  • fredndallas · 5 months ago
So unfortunately and yet absolutely true!
  • cowboyneok · 5 months ago
Personally, I for one would NEVER give you shit, Mason, unless you were a Republican who fought against gay rights and THEN I would pick you apart and make fun of every stereotypically gay thing you did or said. Politics is a blood sport, and I don't do hypocrisy!

I'm great friends with lots of effeminate men, trans guys and women, butch lesbians. Doesn't matter to me as long as they aren't hypocrites.
  • Steve_in_CNJ · 5 months ago
i would respectfully ask you to reconsider. there is way too much collateral damage when you insult people not for being hypocrites, but for being gay or effeminate or both.
  • cowboyneok · 5 months ago
Well, its pretty hard for me to insult myself when someone makes fun of ME for being effeminate. I can be butch but I can scream, "Mary!" with the best of my gay friends. There is NOTHING wrong with being effeminate. There IS something wrong with someone like Lindsay Graham who struggles SO HARD to be butch, and FAILS, while constantly voting against LGBT rights.

    Again:

"If I were black, and the current issue of the day was whether or not black people should have equal rights and I was dealing with an Uncle Tom politician who voted against my rights, I would make fun of them by emulating an Uncle Tom's stereotypical overly sympathetic way of dealing with his master or white people. Of course, I would make sure my audience was appropriate and understood I did it to SATIRICALLY point out the HYPOCRISY of the target.

I guarantee if I made fun of a hypocritically gay politician, my effeminate or butch friends would be laughing along with me. You can also be assured I would adjust my behavior to my audience. Hell, I can be effeminate myself... I laugh at it, embrace it and ENJOY it."

If you are a man, you are HALF man (Y) and HALF female (X) and there is nothing wrong with embracing the feminine side every now and then. There is ALSO nothing wrong with making fun of a bigoted queer. They are an oxymoron and DESERVE to be laughed at.
  • markf217 · 5 months ago
I did drag at age 11 for the first time. No one put me up to it. I just felt like it was something I wanted to do at the time. I was in the Army and I've been in combat, too. And I can and will be all over the map in terms of being masculine and feminine -- that's something to celebrate. I have taken a lot of shit for being gay. Not a day goes by in 2009 that I don't hear or read some anti-gay slur on TV or via the Internet. All I can say about growing up gay in the rural U.S. South was that it was a good preparation for Army basic training. That said, I will continue to ridicule any closeted man who (as a member of a hateful, right-wing political party opposed to my human and civil rights) opens his mouth to speak and lets 50 meters of pink taffeta fall out.
  • Steve_in_CNJ · 5 months ago
when you ridicule someone for being girly you ridicule everyone for being girly. please consider finding another way.
  • markf217 · 5 months ago
When I ridicule someone for being a gay-hating Republinazi, yes, I ridicule all gay-hating Republinazis. Steve, I considered it and I just can't "find another way." But free speech is like that. And I can be a big ole girl sometimes...
  • Steve_in_CNJ · 5 months ago
mark please try harder to see my point. i'm not having a problem with insulting people for being gay-hating nazis, am i? it doesn't matter that you can pretend to be girly sometimes. for a lot of people, it's not pretending.

as for finding another way, keep your ears open when you read opinion writers on the left. they are great at skewering people for being hypocrites. but with the exception of maybe maureen dowd, they don't ridicule gayness or effeminacy. that way, when people like graham finally come out and apologize, you won't have to feel like a hypocrite yourself.
  • Mason · 5 months ago
"When you ridicule someone for being girly, you ridicule everyone for being girly." Thank you. That is exactly what I've been trying to say. All these other posters keep claiming that there's nothing wrong with being effeminate, and yet they keep using effeminacy as an insult. I don't think they can have it both ways.

We are making fun of Lindsay Graham the same way Dave Chappelle made fun of the blind black KKK member:

    http://videos.matchdoctor.com/30206/Dave_Chappe...
  • Steve_in_CNJ · 5 months ago
i get that you're not backing down on this. but you're covering your ass rather ineffectively with this uncle tom analogy. you didn't insult graham for being too sympathetic to his masters. you insulted him for being girly and gay. so mason's point about watermellon and jivin' was never answered. ok you can be effeminate. all that says is that you insulted yourself and that is a further example of collateral damage. we do this sometimes because we subconsciously think of ourselves as inferior.
  • cowboyneok · 5 months ago
sorry you think that, Steve, and sorry you were offended.
  • Steve_in_CNJ · 5 months ago
i was glad to have so many chances to clarify. i wasn't personally offended. no hard feelings whatsoever.
  • cowboyneok · 5 months ago
Maybe this will help. Remember when Dave Chappelle did the whole blind black racist KKK member routine that was wildly popular?

    Same thing!

    http://videos.matchdoctor.com/30206/Dave_Chappe...

I'm gay and I think I can make fun of bigoted gay people the same way Chappelle made fun of a bigoted KKK blind black man.
  • Steve_in_CNJ · 5 months ago
    here's a link that works:
    http://cliptank.com/funny-clips/dave-chappelle-...

i'm sorry i don't get it.. this vid is very good but it is ridiculing racial bigotry, not racial identity. there's also some ridicule of poor people with west virginia accents. some people might take offense at that. but there is no ridiculing or stereotyping of black people that i can see (eg, where is the watermelon or the ape -- or the rap music or derelict dads or drug pushers or shoplifters or welfare queens etc?)

yes you can make fun of anyone you want. but please don't do it by insulting innocent bystanders. people like Mason who posted here don't deserve that.
  • cowboyneok · 5 months ago
Wait a minute. I never insulted Mason... I simply said I would make fun of bigoted Republicans. I've never met Mason, and I don't if I'm more effeminate than he is? I'll take him at his word he is effeminate. So what? I can be effeminate, too. Straight men can be effecminate... Your right the video is making fun of racial bigotry instead of racial identity. I give up... MY HEAD HURTS. Just realize I'm not a bigoted person and I would lay down my life for my fellow effeminate gay brothers. I think if you've read enough of my posts, you know that by now.
  • Mason · 5 months ago
Do you also pick apart and make fun of every stereotypically black thing that a black politician you happen to disagree with does or says? Do you make jokes about black Republicans eating watermelon and shuckin' and jivin'? That would be just as offensive as mocking the effeminacy of your political rivals.
  • cowboyneok · 5 months ago
    No, I'm not african american.

If I were black, and the current issue of the day was whether or not black people should have equal rights and I was dealing with an Uncle Tom politician who voted against my rights, I would make fun of them by emulating an Uncle Tom's stereotypical overly sympathetic way of dealing with his master or white people.

I laugh at it, embrace it and ENJOY it.

I will say my first boyfriend was African American, and I experienced a LOT of ugly racism in the gay community. I've also experienced a lot of hateful behavior towards effeminate gay men. I will say the only time I was ever hateful to effeminate men was when I was young and hated the effeminate part of myself. I projected anger towards anyone who reminded me of my effeminate side. I've grown up since then, and don't do it UNLESS the audience and target are appropriate. Gay bigots are oxymorons and they deserve to be made fun of.
  • Bostonian_Queer_in_Dallas · 5 months ago
Mason...it's not about mannerisms...IT'S ABOUT HYPOCRISY. Lindsay Graham votes against my civil rights AND sucks cock? Then I shall make fun of him.
  • FunMe · 5 months ago
But you know what, I would never insult you. Why? Because I bet you don't go around being a hateful gay trying to deny others their rights.

    I am correct?

Don't take it as an insult against feminine gay. We are all different. Take it as an insult against a self-loathing closeted gay guy who does harm to other GLBT people.

THAT is why Lindsey is being made fun of.

    Big hug.

to all the commenters here confusing gay with effeminate: what if graham were masculine and gay? what would be the line of attack? to all the effeminate people reading these comments, including women: there's nothing wrong with the way you are.
  • mozziekiller · 5 months ago
    i am a HUMAN!
  • markf217 · 5 months ago
I think the issue here is "closeted gay and Republican" -- it doesn't have anything to do with being masculine and feminine. I have as much affection for the GOP as I do for Nazis and Al Qaeda. I think if Graham would come out (and reject being a member of a gay-hating right-wing party) he would be embraced. Oh, we'd still poke fun at him. Gay men do that! But we'd be laughing with him and not at him, and would buy him a beer.
  • Steve_in_CNJ · 5 months ago
i never suggested we shouldn't attack and ridicule graham for being a hypocrite. i suggested that ridiculing his effeminacy is missing the mark. there's nothing wrong with being effeminate.
  • anastasjoy · 5 months ago
We'll know it's for real when we hear they've lined up a "fiancee" for him!
  • Butch1 · 5 months ago
One of your many folks who read and comment on this blog called Sen. Graham, " Miss Pittipat. " I'm still laughing about that and it fits him to a "T".

From now on, that is what I am going to call her.

You go girl! Time to make it the Gay Old Party! *Z-snap*
  • johnjacobjingleheimerschmidt · 5 months ago
I hear New Line has tapped him for the part of Uncle Arthur in a new Bewitched remake.... Oooooh Samantha!
  • markf217 · 5 months ago
That is hilarious! But honey, I see Lindsey (who is such a drama queen and always makes these drag-queen hand gestures) as more in the role of Endora. There is a website for Sarah Palin erotica: http://sarahpalinerotica.com/
Will I get sued if I did a lindesygrahamerotica version? Or is that protected free speech? I can imagine Lindsey as a courtly lover, wearing a ripped bodice, getting slutty in the senate cloak room, and saying, "Ravish me, André." Hey, Lynn Cheney has written some awesome lesbian stuff, maybe she can do the Lindsey Love Saga. First volume in the edition, "A Man Called Bitch."
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 5 months ago
Lindsey was the most notoriously private of all the gentlemen farmers in the county.

"Why, I declare," said Marilee Hunter, the belle of the Magnolia Ball, "Mister Graham is just so shy and retiring, but my Aunt Clarabelle Lee told me he's just so courtly in his manner. Why, any woman feels so clean and sweet around him. I never had to pay any mind about him, unlike some of the dreadful brutes around these parts."

"But, I hear tell," whispered the vicious gossip Flora Mountjoy, "that Mister Graham has been spendin' a mite too much time around his stables. Those stable lads of his are picked for their fine brows and strapping bodies. Why, last month he went to the auction in Charleston specially to bring some new boys back to his manor. And I do declare, one of the cooks saw Mister Graham come out of the stable yesterday at dawn, with straw all in his hair. . . "

Puh-LEASE. "The new 'it' guy"? Any fool who falls for THAT line DESERVES to be walking home at 5am in the rain with his ass hurting.
  • Butch1 · 5 months ago
Once the decrepit right finds out Miss Pittipat doesn't prefer women, she's toast.
  • markf217 · 5 months ago
Next thing you know, Lindsey will be writing a cookbook, having a cologne named after him, and he will be sponsoring a line of rural men's fashion at Wal-Mart (just can't wait to go to that fashion show). After that, a reality show will follow. Personally, I find Lindesy's intimate friendship with SC Lt. Gov. André Bauer (another confirmed Republican bachelor) very, very moving. They are truly "Palmetto State Pals." Say what you will, but I doubt Lindsey or André will ever have a problem like Maria in Argentina.
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 5 months ago
They might have a problem like Mario on Mandate or rentboy.com . . .

That's right, you go girl. This closet case is sitting right next to "creepy" Mitt while Mitt is slamming Gay marriage on Meet The Press. God, the camera wasn't on Ms Grahm while Mitt was going on and on but I swear I could feel Lin"say" squirm and almost seen it when the camera went back to him. It's amazing how little self worth these Republican closet cases have.

I was just sitting down in front of the TV as Keith was signing off and I sure thought he mentioned that she was off attending it. I could be wrong because there was some noise here.

Lindsey Graham is now the head of the Republican Party because he's the only Republican not cheating on his wife. Because he HAS no wife. Bachelor Senator... who happens to be more feminine than Marilyn Monroe. Yes, another anti-gay closet case hypocrit schmuck.
  • markf217 · 5 months ago
I don't think of Lindsey as the "head" of the GOP. Um... I think of him as being more of an orifice.
  • EML · 5 months ago
Couple of thoughts on Graham. First, as many people have noted there are strong suspicions on Graham's orientation. But on the upside, this is a guy who bucked his party on lots of legal issues over the last few years, especially on the topics of the Geneva Conventions and the Law of War. Whatever his sexuality is, I have noted that he has taken several principled stands that did NOT toe the Republican Party line. Having said that, even if he's not gay, eventually because he does have a few principles, he will come into contact with the Republican Leadership and they will savage him.
  • cobblepot · 5 months ago
There is so much delicious comedy about Auntie pittipat, thanks! It made my morning! But here's a thing: could lindsey be a non-practicing homosexual, so in the closet that he cannot admit the fact to himself? I have a nephew raised by strict evangelical parents who is arguably gay, but really does not seem to know himself in any meaningful ways, including his sexual identity. Whatcha think?
  • DastiusKrazitauc · 5 months ago
"But here's a thing: could lindsey be a non-practicing homosexual, so in the closet that he cannot admit the fact to himself?"

Or maybe he's asexual or neuter, and that's why he's being called the "It" guy.

suddenly, I'm picturing lindsey saying "it puts the lotion on its skin or it gets the hose again."

Be careful what you wish for. I can think of a couple of people I wouldn't mind having as our first gay President (well, after Buchanan), & Loathsome Lindsey is so not on the list.
