AMERICAblog: McCain at the Des Moines Register: "combative and at times surly"

  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 1 year ago
He hates having his authority and Platonic self-image (brave warrior, man of integrity, self-sacrificial martyr) challenged by women.
This disgraceful performance should be his Nixon At the Debate "moment."
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 1 year ago
Almost twenty years ago (1992), on the floor of the Senate, there was his reprehensible interaction with Dolores Alfond, another woman who DARED to question him.
Watch Youtube: "John McCain Losing His Cool."
  • tlsintx · 1 year ago
i've seen this clip. it chills the blood.
  • Mark in Florida · 1 year ago
was that the one where every other word is the F word? If McCain becomes president, we will all long for the good old days of GW Bush. Now that's bad!
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 1 year ago
Actually, there are versions of that clip that have been doctored to add profanity. No, the real incident is bad enough...
  • Mark in Florida · 1 year ago
doctoring that stuff does not help our cause....esp when the real version is awful enough.
  • MrsTarquinBiscuitbarrel · 1 year ago
That is a heartbreaking video. He made her cry, and then stomped out of chambers...
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
As McCain's poll numbers drop he is probably going to display more behavior like he did in that clip. Like a cornered animal, he has no place to go. He can only go so far in blaming the media for his problems

As the pressure increases is it possible McCain may come completely unhinged?
  • Mark in Florida · 1 year ago
....That is the hope......as Barack says..... "got Hope"?
  • Lolis · 1 year ago
McCain will never admit picking Palin was a mistake -- even to himself. He is a deeply flawed human being and politician. I am so glad that Obama is going to win this thing for the sake of competency and temperament alone.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
    What a loon!
  • Rab · 1 year ago
McCain has PTSD, the media needs to ask the question, "What psychological counseling did you receive when you came back from Vietnam?" This guy has problems around his own repugs, I see no other reason and I don't buy the "straight talk" bullshit.
  • Mark in Florida · 1 year ago
You hit the nail right on the head. He has PTSD big time and it does not take a therapist to see that.
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 1 year ago
If Hillary was supposed to remind men of their first wives, McCain here should remind women of their first husbands.
  • Milli · 1 year ago
He reminds me of my alcoholic grandfather who people gave wide berth to at holidays, etc. All he did was sit around all day announcing that nothing in the world was ever his fault.
  • tlsintx · 1 year ago
the man is NUTS and full of rage.

    thanks but no thanks.
  • Mark in Florida · 1 year ago
What an Asshole. Sorry to be so verbose. This man does not have the temperment to be president. He is worse than Bush, has a Martyr, Hero, and victim complex. He is always on the defense, and appears to be on the verge of blowing up at any minute.

He is unpleasant, and obnoxious. What a dick.
  • deblen · 1 year ago
in another video clip on the Des Moines Register site, he says "Paulson has done an admirable job." Is he out of his mind?? Doesn't Paulson have responsibility for this mess?? Am I off base?
  • Mark in Florida · 1 year ago
wasn't this the guy he wanted to fire ten minutes ago?
  • Hurrycane · 1 year ago
No, that was the SEC Chairman.
  • Mark in Florida · 1 year ago
ah, yes. I think McCain kept calling him the FCC chairman...lol Federal communicatiinos chairman.
  • Steve_in_CNJ · 1 year ago
bill clinton and others need to stop gushing about this guy's integrity and honesty. there's nothing he wouldn't do or say. here he's taunting the interviewers. 'just try to lay a hand on me'. it's a brawl and nothing matters but john mccain.
  • Mark in Florida · 1 year ago
Nothing ever matters but John McCain. Have you seen the way Cindy behaves around him? No wonder she needs to medicate...just to be in the presence of that bastard. What a deuchebag.
  • Hurrycane · 1 year ago
deuchebag -- Is that a German douchebag? ;-)
  • Mark in Florida · 1 year ago
In honor of the fascist regime of the republicans.
  • MrsTarquinBiscuitbarrel · 1 year ago
WTF? A woman (older, by the tone of her voice), asked McInsane if he'd always (while in U.S.) been covered by govt health care plans. Simple question, no? He smirks and says in a cross voice, "I've never been an astronaut, but I think I know the limitations of space." Answer the question, dude!
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 1 year ago
He was claiming that her perfectly vaild question was a "statement." Classic passive-aggressive rage. We should gain good insight into how he interacts with women from this.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
You could tell he was angry and rather than directly answer the question he used a metaphor. What it says is "yes I may have been covered but it doesn't mean I don't know the problems" His anger got in the way of a direct answer.
  • Mark in Florida · 1 year ago
That answer did not even make any sense. There was no connection to the original question, even in gest. This guy is losing it.
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 1 year ago
Today, for the first time ever, I actually feel pity for both Cindy and Carol McCain. Can you imagine what kind of emotional abuse this dick would mete out to them? (He didn't learn his lesson from being grilled by local media in Maine, but that male reporter, Rob Caldwell, wasn't subjected to this kind of barely-repressed rage when challenged).
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
I feel nothing for Cindy McCain. She stands behind McCain at each and every speech he makes. Her head goes up and down like one of those little bobble headed dolls. She apparently loves her position in life because god knows she could dump his ass in a heartbeat without suffering financial loss or any other kind of loss.
  • bunnyjump · 1 year ago
With so many houses, I doubt they spend any time together.
They strike me as having a parasitic relationship. Cindy provides the cash, John provides the "prestige" of being a senator.
  • lost_nacf_gop · 1 year ago
Gee, I don't know, maybe "insolent pr*ck" is what comes to mind. Loved how the book title "Sacrilege" kept popping up from behind the caustic old geezer, too.
  • Mark in Florida · 1 year ago
ha....I did not notice that.. Funny.
  • MrsTarquinBiscuitbarrel · 1 year ago
    "... challenges of space," sorry.

"Georgetown cocktail-party person"? Who, like him?
  • Mark in Florida · 1 year ago
What is ineresting is, usually with a reaction like this it means the interviewer has hit on an element of the truth. McCain is well aware of George Will, and others calling Palin to step aside. He is hearing it from all sides. There is no other reason to react the way he did if it were not true. And McCain knows it.

"Me thinks thou dost protest too much John......"

    September 30th, 2008, 12:32 pm · 3 Comments · posted by David Woodfill
An estate belonging to presidential hopeful John McCain is up for auction.

The 13-bedroom home was the childhood home of McCain’s wife, Cindy, according to a press release from The Larsen Co., which is handling the sale.

(Click here for an aerial view of the home.)

“Her (Cindy’s) parents built the home in 1951,” said Stewart Larsen, president of Larsen Co. “When she and John got married, they moved in and raised the kids there for 20 years until two years ago.”

Some of the more lavish amenities at the 2.7-acre estate include a full bar and playhouse, theater room, 4-bedroom guest casita, wine-tasting room, and 7-car garage. The house has 14.5 bathrooms, a pool, three ramadas and “resort style grounds.”

The 15,000-square-foot home, which will be auctioned at 1 p.m. on Oct. 25, is at 7110 N. Central Avenue, which is just north of Glendale Avenue in north Phoenix.

Larsen said there’s no minimum bid, but the house is appraised at $12 million and it’s up to the McCains whether or not to accept the highest bid.

Auctioned Oct 25th? What a stupid thing to want to draw attention to before the election...jeesh.

I have a theory on his (lack of) anger management. We know he was a hot head even as a young man. We also know his arms were broken In Viet Nam and he didn't receive adequate treatment so the effects of osteoarthritis would be even more severe. We see him fiddling with his wedding ring a lot. I think he's in a great deal of pain. Either they medicate him and he's goofy, or they don't and he's angry. Either way, not the guy you want with his finger on the button.

LOL....that is hilarious! I love the woman who grabbed the her friends hand and made her put it down when the guy asked for McCain voters. No one raises their hand, and the comentator thinks it's split??? These guys are smoking crack.

I would love to see Obama needle this guy even more in the next debate.
  • Mark in Florida · 1 year ago
I think you will see that. The first debate was to look presidential and be above board. I think you will see Obama go after McCain even more.
  • TomJoad · 1 year ago
I know the common wisdom has touched on the whole "he dings Obama for his lack of experience then picks Palin??" which is valid...

But, to put it better in perspective, he was relying HEAVILY on attacking Obama for lack of experience, where Obama clearly had a command of his subject matter, and it was quite a bit of difference of opinion.

Then he sits next to Palin, while she blathers on completely ignorant, using buzzwords only, and tries to look the part of the patient man, while she makes a fool of herself and shows incredible ignorance.

This is the grizzled navy guy? It's hard to put into words, but the connection needs to be made even more, if VP she COULD be president. She can't hold a candle to Obama, that has to be clear to ANYONE that can objectively stand to listen to her for more than ten minutes.

    It's ridiculous.

I've been waiting to see SOME kind of ad which points out that McSame has spent most of his adult life with taxpayer-funded health care. . .I think that has always been an important point to make. And his dismissive attitude about not being an astronaut as a comparison is ridiculous. . .the point is, he hasn't proposed dumping HIS taxpayer-supported insurance in favor of a little tax credit for himself. Nor has he proposed paying taxes on his own health care insurance, even though the taxpayers are his employer.

It continues to amaze me that he is a "hero" simply because he was an ineffective combat pilot who spent the war as a POW. . .and a career in which he continually sucked at the teat of the taxpayers while confessing he never loved his country until he was 31. This man is a Republican welfare queen of the highest magnitude - is there anything provided by taxpayers that he has ever turned away?
  • Mark in Florida · 1 year ago
It is a perfectly legitimate question and he could have answered in a positive way. " Yes, as a US senator I have been blessed to have good healthcare, and I will make it one of my priorities to see that every American has the same access that I do".....blah blah blah...... He could have turned that question into something positive....all the more reason to think he has lost his marbles.

Good god, stick a mic in front of my face and I could spin those questions into positive outcomes in a second.

Which one of the McCain thirteen houses is Sarah Palin staying? I wonder if the house in which she is staying was paid for by:

    A. Beer money
    B. Gambling
  • Mark in Florida · 1 year ago
C: Tax payer supported salary & lobbiest kickbacks....
  • Webster · 1 year ago
And, don't forget, in spite of his (wife's) wealth and his senate salary, he continues to receive disability pay--which is about the only pay he deserves--but in light of all that other wealth you would think he would be honorable enough to turn that down.
  • sisterfaith · 1 year ago
The Register should take him up on his offer of "proof" about the Obama sex education lie.......he offered......them of course tried to cover himself.....

Ummm, did you all catch his remark about being a dictator? Disturbing. Also, Politico is WRONG about the Des Moines Register - it is NOT in any way liberal leaning. They endorsed McCain for heavens sakes. This is the Mid West in Iowa (I live in Iowa) and this is a conservative state generally. I mean, we have the most right wing nuttiest Congressman in Congress - Rep. King! (Who is just an embarrassment to thinking, non-psychotic Iowans) McCain is just mad that Obama is leading by double digits in Iowa despite it being a conservative state!
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
I would argue that Michelle Bachmann is the nuttiest. Ever see her on cable teevee news? The woman not only talks crazy, but she has those "crazy eyes" women in Germany had during the 1930 - 1940's Nazi years!

There is no doubt that McCain is in charge of the attacks on Obama...considering his comments on the "sex-ed for kindergarten" question. He's despicable.

And what the hell was he talking about astronauts for when he was asked about healthcare?

Finally, he must not read George Will, watch CNN (David Frum) or read the National Review since he says he hasn't heard of any conservatives having problems w/ Palin.
  • msskwesq · 1 year ago
No, I think he did read them and dismissed them as "Georgetown Cocktail Party Conservatives" I can tell you that when I lived in D.C., he was right there in Georgetown drinking with his pals.... ( I lived there for 14 years before moving to Iowa, I grew up in Chicago, so I have a wacky view on politics for sure!!!)
  • SCLiberal · 1 year ago
What a surly, snotty, condescending asshole. And he never did answer the "have you been on public-financed health plans all your life" question.
  • osage · 1 year ago
McCain says he'd be glad to provide "documentation" to support his campaign's accusation that Obama supports sex education for young children, but makes the caveat that "you may not accept that documentation", which pretty much is an admission that the McCain campaign has an interpretation that unbiased reporters may not agree with. In other words, the "documentation" they have is gray rather than black and white and subject to interpretation. He's arguing his position like a lawyer defending a guilty client whose evidence of guilt or innocence is subjective rather than objective. If McCain had concrete evidence of his accusation, why would he need to make the statement "you may not accept that documentation"? That statement is an admission that his "documentation" is subject to multiple interpretations. Based on his own logic, the fact that he broke under torture and made false statements that were used as propaganda against the U.S. government makes him an anti-American traitor.
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
McCain is an American hero is SUBJECTIVE. I like that!
  • TomJoad · 1 year ago
So why the hell do these guys never get the followup "senator, we've looked into this and the so called "sex education" is simply teaching children to be able to stay away from sexual predators, NOT education in the implied sense"

Geez - at our our house, when Grampa got that cranky, we knew it was time to tell him it was 5:00 o'clock somewhere and give him an Old Fashioned, pronto.

I just can't fathom that the R ticket is so thoroughly decompressing; it feels like a matter of days until either he attacks a bystander or she just melts into total glossolalia. It's almost too good to believe.
  • collin999 · 1 year ago
Commenting as a liberal non-American, most of the above comments seem really overreaching. I see a combative stance and a little sarcasm in McCain's demeanor, but not a lot more. Where's the anger?
  • houstonray · 1 year ago
Wow, just watched the video and he is SO ready to explode. Holy crap. He scares me even more now. Wow. I think 10 more minutes of questions like that, he just might have lost it.

You know, we have 2 more Presidential debates and I have this observation. I've seen alot of interviews with him over the campaign and it seems that when he's sitting at a table, he lets his guard down and more of the angry side comes out. Almost like he's ready to start hitting the table with his fists. At a podium he's a bit stiff and not as aggressive. All I can say is one of the next two Presidential debates is a round table. He's liable to lose it sitting that close to Obama. Maybe he'll take his shoe off and start pounding it on the table.

Wouldn't it be awesome if the Secret Service had to rush in and take Obama off stage! LOL!
  • laughingcrow · 1 year ago
It's insulting how dismissive and condescending he is. He wants total respect but gives none. He lies to Letterman and cancels his appearance, is proven to be a liar during the show and does he apologize? NO. Totally disrespectful. (And Scarborough says DAVE was the disrespectful one?) During the debate he wouldn't even give Obama the courtesy of looking at him, not once. It's like he didn't even think Obama was fit to be in the room with him. You can tell it is an affront to him to be disagreed with. I would like to see Obama needle him to the point of losing it in the next debate. It probably wouldn't take much at this point. I don't really see much chance of it happening though because Obama generally goes out of his way to be respectful and courteous even to his opponents (one of the reasons I like him, actually), but I can dream can't I?
  • Butch1 · 1 year ago
It appears he likes pushing women around. He interrupts and won't let them finish their questioning if he thinks what they say will hurt him. He was reaching his boiling point when he told them he was finished with the interview with them.

Interesting that McCain tries to imply that he was NOT covered by taxpayer funded healthcare when he wasn't in the military but before he went to congress.

He retired from the Navy in 1981 as a full bird Captain having served since his first year at Annapolis in 1954 -- 27 years. Therefore he was entitled to FULL military as well as veterans administration healthcare -- he could take his pick from either or.

Last time I checked those were taxpayer funded even in 1981 so that means that he was covered by taxpayer healthcare his entire life -- as dependent children are covered when their parents serve. In his case his daddy the admiral.
  • lark83 · 1 year ago
Yeah, he tried to imply he wasn't covered after he retired from the military, but he was. I know because I too am a military retiree and I'm covered. Its one of the great benefits military retirees get.

He was a real jerk in his reply to the question.
