AMERICAblog: McCain backed abolishing the Department of Education

What's the old adage? Fool me once, shame on me, fool me twice, shame on you...what is fooling me 3 times?

US education has seen a steady decline since the Federal DOE has been in place. The local state model had served this country quite well. The states stupid enough to neglect education suffered while states that devoted resources properly profited. Having the Federal government, the chief benefactor of ignorant voters, be in charge of education is a recipe for disaster.

DOE causes poor students? you need to stay after class.
  • mf_roe · 1 year ago
Plot US student achievement levels since the DOE began its takeover of the schools, be sure to correct for re norming the tests. While you are at it compare the average curriculum in the 1960s and today.

now plot the price of energy since the other DOE was created. maybe the repubs are right. we don't need anything but DOD.
  • sukabi1 · 1 year ago
next plot the amount of time it takes a republican to pull their head out of their ass.

it coincides with "acceptable" textbooks, required subjects of study, types of assignments, tying school funding to student test scores... the things that get cut like music and the arts, physical education and extracurricular activities -- all contribute to a students well rounded education --- the only things being taught in most cases are specific subjects that may improve the students' chances of scoring well on the mandatory tests.

There is more reliance on multiple choice handouts than actual teaching of the subject matter... and there is less subject matter being taught.

I went to school during the 60's - 70's in a very small town (and it was by the standards of the time a second rate school) and we had more class choices, better lesson plans, and more extracurricular activities than my kids did in the schools they went to 10 - 15 years ago... those were larger, better funded schools in a fairly large city.... they were given handouts to do and not much else...

    Letter to McCain
What’s up with McCain? I think he might be losing the plot. Not impossible at his age, but just look at it… His wife owns a beer company but he refuses to share. He thinks flip-flops is a policy strategy instead of shoes. He doesn’t know that a chick that smiles at you doesn’t mean she is hot or a running mate. He shows some man-love by hugging Dubya but then denies they are having an affair. He thinks del.icio.us is a vetting process and he scares little Republican kids. Shame, poor old man. I wrote him a letter to give him a few tips on how to deal with these and a few other problems at http://angryafrican.net/2008/09/09/a-letter-to-...

with all the complaining you guys do about how obama's ads are not strong enough, not visible enough and not really doing the job for his campaign, i think you ought to track back over the past few weeks and see just how much bandwidth you've devoted to both mccain and palin... granted, it's a negative focus, but i haven't visited americablog once (and i'm usually here 3-4x a day) that virtually everything posted by joe and john is about mccain and/or palin... the only respite generally comes from chris... you do realize, i'm sure, that even negative attention is still attention and that you're giving plenty of exposure to both of those sorry cases...

    just sayin',,,

"That Department of Education was overt the top... I put it on Ebay" -- Sarah Palin

Do a little googling...he has been out to shut down some odd things. I found out the other day he was in charge of trying to make UFC illegal years ago. That would be United Fight Championship I think--its where the hot straight guys beat the sh*t out of each other in a cage. Much like gay sex but with lots of punches and kicking. I was shocked. This would eat into his voter base I think.

Under GOP rule, I don't see much reaon for the DOE, either. Republicans are only FOR education while they're campaigning. Once elected, they don't really care.
  • TheoSuch · 1 year ago
For those too young to remember, abolishing the Departments of Education and Energy were part of the GOP mantra back in the 1980's and, I guess, into the early 1990's. So, McCain was just being a mainstream Republican back in 1994.

    Eliminate Department of Education.

    Ban library books.

    Dumb down America.

That's the real GOP agenda because an illiterate America is easier to control.
  • mauro7inf · 1 year ago
Uh, where did you hear that? I hear their two-week crash course actually sucks. I hear they recite "Under God" in the pledge every day because, if it was good enough for the Founding Fathers, it's good enough for them.

To be replaced by the Department of Edumakashun. It fits the profile.
