AMERICAblog: McCain campaign: Palin's unwed daughter is pregnant

  • fastneataverage · 1 year ago
Holy sh*t! Could you imagine the reaction of Obama had a 17yo daughter who was 5 mos. pregnant?
  • ZennButtKicker (tlhwraith) · 1 year ago
Give it a little time! You're already yelling hypocrisy and the story just broke like 30 minutes ago! It was rather smart to release the story in the middle of a hurricane, too bad the hurricane story is starting to fizzle out and in the middle of the RNC convention, while voters are "getting to know" Palin, they just threw a bunch of red meat to the MSM. As much as the MSM may be in bed with McCain, this story is too juicy to not cover and they will as soon as "Gustav mania" tetters out later this afternoon.
  • AdrianBrowne · 1 year ago
She was vetted. She's being used and abused by the RNC.

    heckuva job, Rove.

    sheesh.

but one she had a descion to make=pro choice. second I bet she is more like a month along and still believe she aas already had one child.
  • lilyannerose · 1 year ago
"Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi's privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates."

Why do I get the feeling that Sarah's moose shooting gun might have something to do with this wedding?
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
So Palin has been a candidate for all of what, 2 days, and she is invoking Bush's policy of not talking about embarrassing situations?? I say BS to that! Palin knew her daughter was an unwed mother at the time of accepting the nomination. How dare she??

She is turning out to be quite adept at lying.
  • moreleesafer · 1 year ago
oh she knew she was preggers at the time. why else would her 17 y.o. daughter have on an engagement ring at the announcement?
  • ZennButtKicker (tlhwraith) · 1 year ago
All I have to say is that I hope liberal bloggers stop spreading rumors. Why that statement? They are using the "Sarah Palins kid Trig is really Bristols" rumor to provide cover for announcing that Bristol really is pregnant. It's transparent, but it does deflect some attention from the fact that the 17 year old unwed daughter of the GOP Vice Presidential candidate is pregnant, and she's supposed to be the rally point for all the "no sex before marriage" fundies.

I don't care if Bristol is pregnant, does crack on the side, whatever, it's her life, but I do find it disturbing to paint Palin and her family as some symbol of conservative values and clearly Bristol didn't get all the lectures. So, I wish Bristol a happy and safe pregnancy, and I hope the bloggers and democrats find an effective way to ram this down the throats of all the "family values" hypocrits (Sorry, politics ain't nice sometimes).
  • okojo · 1 year ago
I wouldn't worry about the fundies. They will rationalize this in their own way supporting McCain. It is how independents and Independent women feel about this. Many women are already insulted by the Palin pick, and having her daughter pregnant, when she was 16-17 right when she is starting high school, can be a huge uproar, or at least totally defeat the Republican moral self righteousness...

Hopefully it will bring up the debate about contraceptives to teenagers. It is also will cut funding to any stupid abstinence only programs.
  • ydthin · 1 year ago
This never would have come out were it not for liberal bloggers going after it. Anything you legislate against is open season if you are a politician. Neither Clinton nor Edwards legislated against sex, adulterous or not. If it's in your platform, you better make sure it's not in your life, and if it is, it's up for political discourse. That is the chance you take, and this shows better than anything what kind of mother Sarah Palin is. A decent mother would have turned down this nom, knowing that it would be impossible for her parenting skills and her own supposedly beloved seventeen year old daughter to avoided being ripped appart in the national press when her pregnancy became obvious. What a horrible person Sarah Palin is turning out to be. There is NO WAY she didn't know how Bristol would be talked about, and she put her in this position anyway. Disgusting.
  • okojo · 1 year ago
The Liberal bloggers had the right intent, but the wrong results. This takes someone who knows the locals, gain their trust, and wipe away some of the patina. The Daily Kos was workng themselves in a lather that Trig was Bristol's baby. Something was up, but this wasn't going to be solved by the "Internets", it was going to be solved by either a reporter from the Anchorage Daily News, or someone who talked to a couple sources close to the Palin family.
  • loona_c · 1 year ago
And tell me again, HOW MUCH vetting did they do of this candidate????

I smell a cover-up. This is supposed to prove that Bristol is not the mother of Trig. Hide Bristol, get past the election, then miscarriage - nice and tidy.
  • Cjeffery · 1 year ago
I bet we see no more of her Daughter. And I'm sorry my Palin when you make family values the issue your family is under the spotlight also.
  • erykah · 1 year ago
So, they are the typical American family after all. This woman does not need to be running for VP, she needs to be attending to her children.
  • Sage24 · 1 year ago
I agree. Somehow Palin forgot to tell her daughter about the perils of being an unwed mother. Perhaps she was too busy cutting property taxes for her city, but aren't these sanctimonious folks supposed to be the living examples?
  • ydthin · 1 year ago
If you can't do one thing well, that should be your first clue not to take on more. I read about some of her moves as governor and they were downright scary. Apparently she just does what she wants; in one instance when she needed approval of a board of directors to go forward (I can't remember the specific issue) and they disagreed, she just vacated the board and installed all new board members. Children, as most of us know, can't be handled in this manner. We need to be careful with the admonishments to 'stay home' etc, and frame it in a language of balance and competence...don't hand them ammo to label us as sexist.
  • An_American_Karol · 1 year ago
So we are to be appeased because her seventeen year old daughter, somehow, got herself pregnant while home recovering from mononucleosis and Palin endangered herself and her special needs baby by flying across the country while in labor. Ya, I trust her judgment.

That's so cute! The Palins are not only running with one....but now they're having their own little bastard.
  • ZennButtKicker (tlhwraith) · 1 year ago
Perhaps a bit too far over the decency line? Say what you will about Palin, but namecalling to an unborn kid is kind of low.

On a different level, this is exactly the kind of reaction that in the long run will only help the GOP. Let the GOP contort how this is not a bad thing, if the Dems directly criticize Bristol we will come across as looking vindictive and frankly, just plain mean.

IMO its OK to raise the conflict this situation presents to the whole "family values" arguement, but to simply do name-calling is really counter-productive.
  • Sage24 · 1 year ago
Personally I don't give a damn about whether she is married or not, but it is the sheer hypocrisy that gets to me. They are so judgmental about others, and make it a point to consistently point fingers at liberals at say they have no morals etc.
This is obviously some kind of cover up, under the hurricane umbrella. Since rumors are getting louder that Palins son is really her grandson, it looks like they are bringing up this pregnancy, hoping the other story will get lost in the new story.
Typical. Republican. hypocrisy. Lies. cover-ups. disaster.
Yes, she would be a good VP for the republican party.
  • Jim Olson · 1 year ago
I'm sorry, but this whole thing just does not pass the smell test.

Lies built on lies are like a house built on sand. Once the foundation shifts, the whole thing comes down. Lets hope that people see through this soon enough to simply say no to this potential disaster for our country.

  • katjam · 1 year ago
". . . which is why they will have the love and support of our ENTIRE family."

Yes, governor, as VP you will be there to guide your wayward daughter through her new motherhood. Maybe if you had spent more time at home and/or doing more than preaching abstinence your daughter might be finishing high school instead of a pregnancy. This is the typical hypocrisy we often see from those who preach family values and loudly disdain minority girls' loose morals if they become unwed teenage mothers.

For god's sake, the Republicans just offered up Palin's daughter to stop the rumors about Palin's fifth pregnancy. Talk about new lows. Ya think Palin was really vetted????

    http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/

How is the Dobson crowd going to explain this?
    T
  • okojo · 1 year ago
They will explain it and spin it to appeal to their followers. The Social Conservatives don't have much choice right now on whom they can support right now, it has to be McCain or the highway.

There is a reason why Palin has had a press conference since the announcement that she was going to be VP.
  • BLOGGING BITCH! · 1 year ago
Every Alaskan knows about the 5-month-along pregnancy, right?
  • brian · 1 year ago
Is this a comedy sketch? No matter how bad it gets, the Republicans are still better at getting their message out, even if it is contradictory to what they actually believe or do. If anything, this will probably get more people to vote for them because they are "morally obligated" to do so. I am not sure she would marry the man if the Palin was not running with McCain, but that does not matter. What matters is that the Democrats need to call them on their bluff of moral superiority.

I really never understood this association with moral superiority and Republicans. They may go to church more, but does that make someone more moral? It has clouded their judgment and they only care about a few issues, abortion, gay marriage and people that are not Christian. They are also super nationalistic. Once again, a bj in the oval office is not moral, but lying to the country and going to war somehow is moral. Lying itself is not moral and this administration is been more secretive than any other before it. And we can expect the same from a McCain Administration.
  • ydthin · 1 year ago
It's that they know how to use human nature to get people to vote against their best interests. They really don't believe it, they just use psychology to get the masses to further their own aims. The only God they worship is money.
  • Lovebeagles · 1 year ago
    1. Nice job of teaching abstinence, Governer Palin.
    2. "made the decision on her own" to keep the baby...Good thing, considering her parents wouldn't have it any other way.
    3. Five months along....Hm....so she got pregnant while she had mono? That the was the reason she wasn't in school, right? Because she had mono...hope the boyfriend didn't catch it.
    4. Wonder what else McCain didn't consider to be that big a deal in his 'vetting' of Palin...
  • Jim Olson · 1 year ago
Again, this doesn't add up. The timing is all wrong. The lies are so blatant. Five months ago, Bristol was supposed to be home sick with mono.

I think it is wise for the Obama campaign to have made little or no statement about this...again, taking the high road. This will burn itself out shortly.

    Palin is McCain's Harriet Miers.

"Bristol Palin made the decision on her own to keep the baby, McCain aides said."

Unbelievable. How nice that she had a CHOICE. It's also been widely reported that Sarah Palin made the CHOICE not to abort. So now that they've made their personal choices, every other woman should be prevented from making her own choice? Give me a break.
  • dad · 1 year ago
very good. according to sarah it isn't a choice.
  • jdeisenberg · 1 year ago
Yes; that's the story here. The Democratic campaign has to make this point over and over again, and loudly.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
The choice to keep her baby may have been the choice between adoption or raising the baby. Of course, there really wasn't a choice, not with mom running for VP
  • Milli · 1 year ago

Guess Governors have a right to privacy....the citizens don't.

    Nothing secretive about that.

Did McCain know she was pregnant again?
  • Laur · 1 year ago
That would be really weird if Bristol really was Trig's mother (I hadn't thought of that). But Palin supposedly did break water while @ a convention in Texas, gave her speech & reportedly flew to Alaska for the birth (statement I heard was that she didn't wish to give birth in Texas, which I thought was really strange). I hadn't read anything in any blogs about Bristol Palin being Trig's real mother.

So, any way one views it, it smells really, really bad: either Sarah Palin is lying about who the mother of her youngest child is, or she didn't know that her teenaged daughter was engaging in unprotected sex. When did Bristol turn 17, anyway? I guess that IOKIYAR. But it really makes it clearer that Palin isn't prepared to be a heartbeat away from the presidency.
  • Jim Olson · 1 year ago
Was Bristol 16 when she got pregnant? What is the age of consent in Alaska?

If Palin were a Democrat, the Fundies would be demanding she stay home and care for those children. They would be pointing out how irresponsible she is and point out the proof in her putting politics above the needs of her family. But, since she is a good gun toting, anti abortion fundie, she shares their values.
Palin has given us another example of "Right to Lifer's" hypocrisy - they don't care about the baby, just the morality behind the conception.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
Hmm, Palin the answer to getting the women's vote is not going over too well. In two days the woman has been caught up in an ethics investigation, lied about the "bridge to no where", tried to compare herself to Hillary and now this.

Think McCain is rethinking his VP? Nope remember he was quoted as saying he made quick decisions and then lives with the consequences.
  • Upland_Oddball · 1 year ago
it now seems unlikely, given the timelines we have, that four mongh-old Trig is the son of Bristol, seeing that she is five months pregnant with her own baby. Of course, the timeline could have been fudged by the Palins. Bristol may be four months pregnant, meaniing that she, following her mother's example, is such a devotee of the "Full Quiver" psychosis that no sooner did she drop one baby, she immediately got pregnant again. Or it could be that Trig isn't Bristol's son, but the child of Palin's even younger daughter. I admint these are very dark scenarios, and I hope they really aren''t true for the sake of the babies, and poor Bristol and her sister. We can bring down Palin on Troopergate, on the cold-hearted death sentence she has passed on Arctic Polar Bears and their cubs, and on her utter lack of basic knowledge in domestic and foreign affairs.
  • ydthin · 1 year ago
yep, she will have the baby 'prematurely' or something along that lines. It's eerie how the pics of Bristol holding Trig look like Madonna and child. It's actually very touching, removed from the political philosophy of their hypocritical mom.

Yesterday was my niece's 18th birthday and when I arrived at my brother's house to attend the party, his very Republican brother-in-law was in the midst of spouting off on Obama's plans to turn the White House in a degenerate party crib, with Oprah frying chicken and others making barbeque in open pits on the lawn. I, of couse, chewed him out. "Get your story straight," I told him. "Either Barack is an arugula eating, heath-food loving snob, out of touch with the average Beer-Bellied slob, or he is the Black Bubba you describe!" One or the other. He can't be both.

Now we see that my brother's Rethug in-law was onto something. When McCain moves in, will Palin skin Caribou and hang the carcass out on the porch of the White House?

    Cynical view:
They used Pawlenty making him think he was the VP pick until the very last minute. So given this cynicism what if they new Palin would blow up with all these scandals and used that? (I believe they did that with Harriet Meirs.)They got to step all over Obama's big night and cause a media frenzy for McCain. Then in the next week or so after the religious right is fully charged up for McCain, Sarah tearfully will tearfully step down to tend to her family. Pawlenty is then named. People view him as a serious candidate by contrast, McCain a wise man and a Maverick at heart who had tried naming the 1st woman to be VP. Sympathy for him as the Democrats are knocked out of kilter and are forced to Op search the new choice. Final benefit: the media not talking the issues (deadly for McCain) only the spectacle of the VP selection for most of Sept.

Thank you, John, thank you Daily Kos, thank you everyone who refused to stop harping yesterday when people were whining about the 'personal'. For because of you, we got this news in August instead of post-election, when it would have come out, possibly after a McCain/Palin victory. Now we have in front of us an example of everything that is wrong with religious conservative philosophy: it just flat stinking doesn't work. Abstinence only education: doesn't work. This, America, is what conservatives want for your daughters, for your middle-aged wives who may have health issues that would put their lives in jeopardy in the event of pregnancy, for your sisters, mothers, wives, girfriends and daughters who have been raped or incested, for every woman of child-bearing age between 12 and 50. We can meditate on this as Bristol's belly grows, as Palin flits all over the country allowing someone else the primary care of her special needs child. Thanks to everyone who forced this issue. I say this having grown up a religious conservative and knowing that they are the biggest liars and hypocrites of them all, with the most bodies buried. Thanks for dragging one of the skeletons out of the closet, so we have an accurate picture of a woman who not only is not qualified to be vice-president and next in line to run the country, but also whose decisions have shown a pattern of not even being qualified to be a parent. Back in the 70's feminists were repeatedly told to shut up with the admonition that what they were talking about was 'personal', that's why they came up with the slogan' the personal is political'. I think this is one of the best examples of that that this country has ever had.
  • moreleesafer · 1 year ago
    I second that wholeheartedly.

Nothing is personal about her life if she is trying to tell me how to live mine.
I speak as someone who almost died when I was pregnant due to the policies left over from the fundie Regan administration. If they want to tell me how to live my life...then their lives are fair game.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
No wonder Palin wants to be VP. She is looking at all those free medical benefits her family needs PLUS she can make sure her other kid is kept safe in Iraq. Country First, um, I don't think so.
  • pcvirginiabeach · 1 year ago
Lets leave aside the fact that Palin is not qualified. Lets leave aside the fact that she is undergoing a corruption investigation, and a conflict of interest probe. Lets leave aside the fact that she beleives in teaching creationism in high school, pro life even in cases of rape, and has literally no postions on foreign policy because she has never had to think about those issues.

At some point you need to start asking yourself if this woman is capable of having the time to do the job given all her family problems. The fact that she is willing to put her daughter through this media frenzy, speaks volumes of her character. There will be more.

Like I have said numerous times, not only is she under qualified, she was obviously not properly vetted.

    McCain is 72.

"Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We're proud of Bristol's decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents," Sarah and Todd Palin said in the brief statement.
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/01/palin-...

They are proud of her decision to her her baby, so if the decision was Bristol's isn't that choice.

This is not a private family matter because Palin is a VP nominee and she would overturn Roe v. Wade and she is against birth control.

this doesn't help Obama at all. Let me explain:

the whole fundie christian thing is the illusion of perfection, right?

No sex before marriage (that NEVER happens, but they like to exist in a 1950's world where they believe it does)

    No abortions (yeah right)

It's alllllll about an illusion. Right now, that christian illusion has been thoroughly broken, but she can't withdraw from the race. If she withdraws, it'll show that McSame's campaign is totally disorganized.

What they'll do is conveniently forget the 'no sex before marriage' stuff, and the 'abstinence' shit, and spin this into her daughter keeping the baby, and thus being pro life. Just you watch.

It'll be so much hypocrisy your head will spin, but the stupids will lap it up.

It's also unfortunately something Obama can't touch with a 20 foot pole. He cant criticize it at all, otherwise he'll be painted as a monster for going after an innocent young expectant mother. So McSame and the fundies get to do as much damage control as they want while Obama sits by and gnashes his teeth at a golden opportunity he can't do anything with.

  • ydthin · 1 year ago
you know, something that bothers me about her nom as well is the 'any woman will do' philosophy. And I think it could rankle alot of women the wrong way. Older qualified women passed over for a young, pretty airhead. This is a universal thread with women, because most women experience this over and over in our lives, being overlooked or replaced or ignored because a better looking (to the beholder) filly comes along. The republicans don't even 'get' the importance of a qualified female candidate because in their eyes no women are qualified.

You may have a point but if so it's the republican men and it's sure
not this gay man... I lived through that crap once and I don't want my
    kid doing it!

God willing will be done with those republican fascist for a long time
    to come!

But I so fear that the nation will be unable to fully embrace Obama...
maybe it just me being here in Houston to much of the time... what ever.

Libs should just keep quiet about this personal stuff. The family values types will be all over this without us piling on. I didn't like McCain making jokes about Chelsea Clinton (following in the tradition of unpleasant Repub jokes about young Amy Carter in her adolescence) and I don't like making Palin's daughter a focus of this race. The kid made a mistake - she didn't ask to be a media sideshow.
  • bunnyjump · 1 year ago
Hey, the fundies are "reaping what they sow". It's the right wing, not the liberals who have made these kinds of issues media worthy. Now the right wing is asking for privacy? You kidding me? Expose 'em for what they are...bunch of f-ing right wing hypocrites.
  • ydthin · 1 year ago
Her mother, with FULL knowledge, put her in this position. What kind of person does that?

She didn't make a mistake, either, she had sex. She didn't use birth control because her mommy doesn't believe in it (apparently). This is what Palin wants for all our kids, so it's great to have the visual aids of what she wants our families to look like. Palin's daughter is not the focus, her hypocritical belief system, one that she and her ilk are trying to enforce on our country, is.

What you are saying is actually very sexist. These are issues that are important to women, they are in effect, women's civil rights issues. It's hard to portray them as such because they only apply to one half of the populace, which people sometimes get confused about, but to call this stuff 'personal' is just wrong.
  • Damned_at_Random · 1 year ago
Assuming Palin was aware of the pregnancy (which she should by 5 months), she showed callous disregard for her daughter’s emotional health by accepting the VP nod. That said, the pregnancy was a mistake by Bristol even if it wasn’t accidental. Some girls get pregnant on purpose because they crave attention or because they “want something to love”. Some girls don’t use birth control because they believe it shows intent and good girls are “swept away”. We assume teens are immature and impulsive- that’s why we seal adolescent criminal records. There are plenty of reasons to question Palin’s judgment and qualifications without dragging her young daughter into the discussion.
  • ydthin · 1 year ago
The pregnancy is not a "mistake". I'm not sure what you mean by "mistake"...is it a 'how did that thing get in there' kind of thing? Are you saying she doesn't know basic anatomy? Her mother is for abstinence only sex education. Are you saying she didn't use birth control? Her mother doesn't believe in it. What you seem to be overlooking is that this is the future that Palin, if given the power and opportunity, would give to ALL teen girls in this nation. No sex education, no access to birth control of any kind, no abortion under any circumstances whatever. No one has 'dragged' Palin's daughter into anything except she herself. She knew her daughter would be subject to this kind of scrutiny and she absolutely did not care. Sarah Palin is concerned with Sarah Palin, which might be how her daughter ended up in this position in the first place (it's rumored to be, her parenting skills are very much a subject of gossip in Alaska). You need to stop painting people who are discussing the hypocrisy of this situation as bad guys and instead place the blame for Bristol Palin's media exposure squarely on the shoulder of the person responsible for putting her in the spotlight: her mother.
  • Damned_at_Random · 1 year ago
I consider a "mistake" a regretable decision- it was a mistake -not an accident- to put Brownie in charge of FEMA. The pregnancy may have been accidental- the kids may not have used a condom correctly or tried the old pull out trick- the sex obviously was not. I think this young woman will regret her actions- a baby and shotgun wedding will limit her options for many years. Her mother's stand on choice and abstinence only education are fair game politically, but leave the kid out of it. You can make the case that comprehensive sex education delays first pregnancies without using Bristol Palin as a political prop. The present story line- attacking this woman's parenting ability and ambition, feeds the fundie argument that women belong at home or the children suffer.

I had a rebellous daughter- short of locking her in the basement, I couldn't really protect her from all her bad decisions (no, her issue wasn't unmarried pregnancy) -but our little drama played out in private (the neighbors may have heard some of it.)

I'm not calling you a bad guy- just wish the commenters would show more restraint and focus on issues, not personal attacks that get echoed in the hate media to our collective detriment.
  • ydthin · 1 year ago
You can call me anything you want, bad guy, etc, whatever. I'm not going to shut up about this. It's insulting to call women's issues "personal" and the pregnancy of a sixteen year old girl denied education about birth control because her mother believes in absintence-only-education a "mistake". No mistake was made, there was no 'oops'. Pregnancy is the inevitable, biological result of sexual activity unless precautions are taken, and sometimes even then. No sixteen-year-old should ever be ignorant of this, to allow a child with a fully reproductively functioning body that kind of ignorance is a dereliction of duty as a parent. By the way, you should notice that conservatives including Sarah Palin have been using Bristol Palin as a political prop since Palin made the announcement today. Many far-right extremists like James Dobson and his ilk have praised Palin in a veiled effort to hammer home their agenda, and Palin herself used the situation to harp
on her pro-life views, in not so many words. So, once again, put the  responsbility for the 'politicization of Bristol' for this squarely where it belongs, on the shoulders of the mother

Remember one thing: Palin knew her daughter would be ripped apart in the national press once the pregnancy became news, and she accepted this nomination anyway. Given that knowledge, would you put your daughter in this position? Most of us wouldn't want our children talked about this way. And given the power to prevent it, we would do the right thing. Not Sarah Palin, it's all about HER goals, HER ambitions, HER Career, her daughter's mental health be damned. She's the living example of how republicans have portrayed Hilary Clinton for years, and feminists in general before that.

All this seems to only indicate that McCain is mentally unfit to be the President.
He has poor judgment, and has handled this VP situation very badly.
Not only has he made a huge mistake choosing someone unfit and unqualified, but he picked someone he did not even know. Now he call her his soul mate.
America deserves someone better. We do not need someone who not only will continue Bush's failed policies, but someone who is way over his head in dealing in simple matters. McCain's prime time was over long time ago.

What's the timeframe on this? Does that mean she was messing around when she had mono?
  • Lovebeagles · 1 year ago
    Yep.

5 months pregnant....back in April, when she wasn't in school because of her incredibly bad case of mono (which lasted and lasted and lasted).

I guess SuperMom and Dad were to busy trying to get their ex-brother in law fired to pay attention to the fact that their 17 year old daughter, suffering from mono, was getting busy with her boyfriend. *rolleyes*

Uh oh, I sense a drip drip drip aspect to this. You know, many of us may not fully understand all of the minutae of Alaskan politics but we do understand when an unmarried teenage daughter (who is also part of the God Squad) gets knocked up. Heaven help them if the rumor of Gov Palin covering for her daughter is true. Since many of us have watched at least one daytime soap opera in our lives, we can understand that storyline too! Instead of the "Young and the Restless", we could call this the "F*cked Up and the Horny." You watch, the next announcment will come from the Hurricane Hannah update. Thank you for listening.

These will be very tough times for Bristol, I feel for her. She needs the love and support of her family, she does not need the excruciating 24/7 media attention that will be thrown at her. Her mother should take correct and motherly action - bow out of VP slot to protect and nurture her daughter. Why Gov. Palin accepted the VP position in the first place, knowing the condition of her daughter, is beyond me - it shows extraordinarily poor judgment.

If McCain knew Bristol was pregmant (as he said he did) he should have realized that the young girl would be placed in a very difficult and psychologically harmful position by all the media attention - he should have put the young girls well being before his own ambition and he should not have asked Palin to be his running mate - his decision displays incredibly poor, irresponsible and self-centered judgment.

Check the spin folks. Bristol is making a brave decision to keep the child. Teenage pregnancy is now an admirable trait if you keep the child.

If she is so brave, let her move out of the governors mansion, get an apartment, get a job at walmart, get an education and be responsible for herself.

Palin's emerging "Babygate" scandals do matter in winning over votes to our side. But those votes won't be from fundies and "Right to Lifers." They are a hopeless, irrational bunch, who will find a positive spin from all of this mes in the end. The target here, the group that needs to be made to feel repulsed and outraged by this scandal are the legions of lightly churched apoliticals who feel overwhelmed by the complexities of this world, and who worry about getting the right messages to their kids. They may have daughters and worry about them getting knocked up. They also have sons and don't want them to be turning neighborhood girls into their 'Baby Mamas." Such pepple don't necessarily believe in childbearing within marriage for theological reasons, they just think it is the proper, functional and traditional thing to do. They used to believe that they had an ally in a fundie like Palin, but now are discovering that the baby-producing imperataive of her and other's "full Quiver" theology has rendered talk of "waiting until marriage" into so much gobbleligook.

It could pan out in the end that Sarah Palin will be rejected and will harm McCain because she is seen as a threat and bad example to the domestic familial morality of millions of non-fundie Americans. What an Irony!

Normally, I would say private family matters should be off limits. HOWEVER, when one of the main "selling points" that Republicans made themselves about Sarah Palin is that she is a mother of 5, a darling of the religious right, pro-life, anti-birth control education etc. Mrs. Palin introduced herself to the world Friday by touting her "hockey mom" credentials and proudly stated that her oldest son has recently joined the military. She made her family part of her qualifications for office, and all the conservative commentators instantly jumped on the bandwagon. Doocey on Fox even claimed that "anyone who can raise five kids" can be VP!

So, I believe it is fair to ask questions about her as a mother, such as:

What kind of mother would agree to run for VP knowing her minor child is 5 months pregnant and needs all the mothering support and help she can get?

Has she really "raised" 5 kids yet, or just given birth to 5 kids? After all, only one is over 18 and the youngest is 4 months. She still has two more daughters younger than the pregnant one.

Some people believe teen pregnancy is a cry for attention. Has Bristol gotten enough attention? She obviously hasn't been well supervised.

If Mrs. Palin was the Democtratic VP nominee, wouldn't all the Republicans be saying that she was putting her own ambition ahead of her family, which is clearly in crisis?

Holy crap!!! I go away from my computer for a few hours and all hell breaks loose in the McCain campaign.

In addition to what Citizen X says (brave = moving out of mansion and being self supporting even if it means working at Walmart instead of the "Governor" supporting her) . If Palin gets into white house does all the ofsproings of here daughters get supported by the taxpayers as well? What if this is her second child . When will we have the third child?. Voters needs a full honest explanation.
  • AngryWriteMail · 1 year ago
This is my viewpoint as a social and usually political conservative. I truly believe we can be friends, though we don't see to eye on all things political.

Oh, ya gotta love the blatant hypocracy! Sarah Palin?
NO! Those who buy into this attiitude of "Normally, I would say private family matters should be off limits. HOWEVER . . ."

Let me finish the thought for you:

. . ."When it happens to the daughter of a CONSERVATIVE candidate - by all means, let's drag the brazen hussie through the political mud!"

Let's be candid here. For quite some time, you've been preaching at Republicans to lay off Barack's wife - even though she's out on the campaign trail, firing her own charges at her husband's opponent (that would be McCain).

But here we have a young girl who has privately made a mistake in judgement that will alter the course of her life. So, you slam her mother?
    Ohhh...you slam her CHRISTIAN mother!"

Okay, now I get it. Christians, by your definition (not the Bible's) are expected to live perfect lives. Well, guess what? Christians fall short as often as non-Christians do. And they are no more prone to chain their daughters to the bed post, or secretly stalk them while they're out on a date - than you Democrat moms and dads would.

You think you've raised Johnny to be a good little liberal - then one day he donates his lunch money to the NRA. Well, you can't watch 'em 24/7, can you?

For decades, Republican and Democrat candidates have had sons and daughters - even an occasional Cousin Billy - but until VP Dick Cheney's grown daughter was found to be lesbian, candidate's kids were 100% off limit. Both parties honored this rule.

Now, the DNC and the news media (no names, but they seem to get a strange tingling sensation down their leg when Barack Obama enters the room) are rationalizing why it's sooooo important to drag this 17 year-old girl through the political mud? Because you believe it shows her mother to be a hypocrit? That's NOT a good excuse, in my book. There IS no excuse for this behavior.

Why would ANYBODY run for public office, when the likelihood is they would be setting their children up for public humiliation? To ensure the best women and men America has to offer will seek to serve their country, we need to stop considering their family members worthy of target practice.

Don't you agree there are far more honorable ways to wage a political campaign. I'll give the DNC a free tip: The more you use teenage Bristol Palin as political fodder, the more middle America (including many moderate Democrats) will become disgusted with you. And should the RNC begin attacking Barack and Michelle Obmama's precious little girls - may a pox be upon the Republican house.

Think about it, my AmericanBlog friends. I believe you know I'm right.

I believe that Bristol is not pregnant and the Trigg is hers. Anyone can put a pillow on their stomach.
