George Walker Bush, 43rd President of the United States of America

OT- John, please cover this ASAP!

Bush's economic bailout bill is another scam- another money grab. Think Patriot Act! This time our hapless Dems can't say they didn't have time to read the bill- we need to be all over this faxing our outrage over this bill. Please read this now and share with everyone you know- post it on all the blogs you frequent and get the word out. Then write your Senators and Congresscritters PRONTO!
    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/9/20/153952/...

A commentor gave this sample letter he sent that you can use- faxing it seems to get more attention:

    Dear Senator XXXXXX:

I am writing in very deep concern over the Wall Street Bailout Act, currently entitled as "LEGISLATIVE PROPOSAL FOR TREASURY AUTHORITY TO PURCHASE MORTGAGE-RELATED ASSETS".

This is, to say the least, a deeply troubling bill. Specifically:

There is little to no oversight. Furthermore, section 8 ensures that any oversight is crippled from the start, as it states, and I quote from the text of the act: "Decisions by the Secretary pursuant to the authority of this Act are non-reviewable and committed to agency discretion, and may not be reviewed by any court of law or any administrative agency."
The floating amount controlled by the Secretary of the Treasury is $700B is effectively a blank check as there is no hard limit.
It appears that the power of the Secretary extends to no-bid contracts.
It provides no restoration of the provisions of the Glass-Steagall Act, modernized or otherwise, that were stripped away by the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act. It does absolutely nothing to change the fundamental problems that led us to this situation.
I strongly urge you to vote against this bill. I know that we need to prevent the complete disintegration of our economy, but this is not the solution. This is a blank check to the executive; it is the abdication of the financial powers granted to the legislative branch in Article 1, Section 8 of the constitution.

    Sincerely,

    Paul Krugman today:

    No deal

I hate to say this, but looking at the plan as leaked, I have to say no deal. Not unless Treasury explains, very clearly, why this is supposed to work, other than through having taxpayers pay premium prices for lousy assets.

As I posted earlier today, it seems all too likely that a “fair price” for mortgage-related assets will still leave much of the financial sector in trouble. And there’s nothing at all in the draft that says what happens next; although I do notice that there’s nothing in the plan requiring Treasury to pay a fair market price. So is the plan to pay premium prices to the most troubled institutions? Or is the hope that restoring liquidity will magically make the problem go away?............................

And there’s no quid pro quo here — nothing that gives taxpayers a stake in the upside, nothing that ensures that the money is used to stabilize the system rather than reward the undeserving.

I hope I’m wrong about this. But let me say it again: Treasury needs to explain why this is supposed to work — not try to panic Congress into giving it a blank check. Otherwise, no deal.

I read this on Kos and sent the letter above to both my Senators and Congressman. Please everyone, read the article, This is another Patriot Act like power grab, this time with the Treasury. Raise hell. Start by reading the article to which the above comment links, get righteously angry that the Bush team has created another situation to terrify us so they can make another unprecedented power grab, and send letters to your Senators,Congressperson, and Senators Obama and McCain..

I also wrote my local newspaper, CNN, and MSNBC. I think the press is mad enough about how they got played on Iraq to give this one a little closer scrutiny, if we call them on it.

I think big majorities of Republicans and Democrats are scared to let the Treasury have this kind of control of our money. After Iraq and Katrina no one really trusts these bozos to deal with a disaster...bipartisan outrage is what we need here.

The Democrats, who are in the majority, for crying out loud, are active participants in this bill. In other words, their pockets will be lined by the banks and insurance companies, just as the Republicans' will, for writing this deplorable piece of legislation. Then when it all blows up the Dems will whinge and cry, oh, we didn't know, it was such a rush, we had to get the legislation passed.

They know. This whole Democracy thing is a farce..

I'm a Democrat, but have my doubts about my party. They knew before they voted for the Patriot Act what it was as it was on the blogs. The same was true of voting for giving Bush the power to go to war in Iraq. That they were rushed or fooled is just the bullshit they want to cover their asses and pretend the Republicans outsmarted them. Outsmarted them? Ha! I doubt the Republicans could beat a mouse to the cheese in a maze even standing over the maze and seeing where the cheese was. The Democrats, Pelosi, Reid, Hillary and the rest of that gang sold us out. Write to those crooks? Why should I waste the effort when I know they have no intention of doing anything other than raking in the geezel along with their Republican collegues. Very, very few who really care one bit. Kucinich, Barbara Lee, Maxine Waters ... All I will accomplish by writing to them is telling them how good this will be for them, how much money they can rip off. They already know that.

Oh yeah, one other reason to write to them. To entertain them, make them laugh, roll on the floor, get belly laughs. Doctors say laughter is good for your health, relieves tension and make you healthier. Hard to tell whether the Republicans or the Democrats are healthier as both get lots of reasons to laugh at our expense. Just know that we have the healthiest government in the world. And, you thought it was that awesome healthcare plan that our governement elected representatives have. They fooled you ... again.

Well, fortunately it doesn't matter if McCain has dementia, since he let Focus on the Family name Sarah the Book Burner as his VP. So... no worries!

Is it possible that his cancer is getting the best of him? Why not release medical records if nothing to hide?

    Palin and her "dead" lake:

    Sarah Palin's dead lake
By promoting runaway development in her hometown, say locals, Palin has "fouled her own nest" -- and that goes for the lake where she lives.

    McCain's environmental record:
    http://www.salon.com/env/feature/2008/09/20/joh...
    John McCain's hot air
He may claim to be green, but McCain's environmental record is every bit as dirty as that of Sen. James "global warming is a hoax" Inhofe.

I don't think we want these people anywhere near the stewardship of our precious land, air, and water!!!

    Please pass along!

These days it's telling that we've replaced 'We respect John McCain for his service....' with 'Did you hear what the old geezer said today?' How can this race be even remotely close?

Everyone seems to mention McSame's cancer or dementia as reasons for his gaffes. But in the 3 minute-long perusal of his medical records allowed by the campaign it was revealed that he takes Ambien for sleep. Anyone who takes Ambien knows that sometimes early in the morning you aren't exactly the sharpest tack in the box. And a 72 year-old liver keeps it hanging around a bit longer in your system that does a 47 year-old liver. "Ambien Amnesia?"
  • gwpriester · 1 year ago
The Democrats should demand that McCain be tested for senile dementia.

Just by demanding this would bring the matter to the voter's attention.
  • Wild_Weasel · 1 year ago
McCain would bring about change just like Bush promised to be "a uniter not a divider."
  • cletus · 1 year ago
Everyone mentions senility or cancer as causes for McSame's "gaffes." But a disclosure from the 3 minute-long perusal of his 1000 pages of medical records showed that he is an Ambien user. His 72 year-old liver may keep it around in his system longer than a younger liver would, and he may be getting "Ambien Amnesia." I use it intermittently and I'm not always the sharpest tack in the box the next morning. Just saying....

The thing that gets me is that the media feels that talking about McCain's age in a negative light is 'ageism'. Well, whatever 'ageism' is, it ain't even close to being on par with things like racism and sexism. One's skin color or gender does not have any correlation to one's competence. However, it is a understood fact that one's age DOES affect how they function.

John McCain isn't as sharp as he used to be. For an average person, there'd be nothing wrong with that fact. However, we do need the next leader of the free world to be sharp as tack. Being president is, like, a pretty big deal and the amount of responsibility is enormous.

Some people might want to believe that McCain misstating things are just little mistakes, but people who know what the hell their talking about don't go on blurting out gaffe after gaffe without ever recognizing that they making these mistakes. This is a peek at a problem that will not get better, but worse.
