I think one or both of the following are going on here: 1) McCain is thin-skinned. Stories from his colleagues including his little explosions, the names he has called them, the snarky emails, etc. have been in the media for years. Conveniently, as he runs for president, we don't hear much about them nowadays from his adoring media types. I think he is so arrogant that he thinks no one has the right to question him about his military service. 2) It is more of the same Republican strategy. Act indignant and then have your proxies swift-boat the questioner. That allows the question to be forgotten and immediately implies a sinister motive to the questioner and may ruin his credibility. Thanks to David Wright of ABC for the question, and cheers to Wesley Clark for standing strong against the smears.

Why didn't he just make something up? It's not like the press is going to call him on it. I could have come up with something and I am not a former POW running for president.
The debates between Obama and McSame are going to be interesting (or sickening)

Interesting only if the narrators step up to the plate and hold McCain hostage in front of the world with legit questions. There used to be a time most reporters had a "pair". They can pound McCain on the question: Obama never ran on his military strength--he's got none.
I'd love to know how the blogosphere (you and I and us) could put pressure on the news to start asking questions.
mccain just happens to be in Columbia when hostages that have been in captivity for 5 years after being taken during the bush administration..

The one question that no one seems to ask, and the traditional media would never, ever touch, is whether there is something inherent in Sen. McCain's years as a POW that actually disqualify him from becoming President of the United States.
In the last elections, George Bush's admitted alcoholism, and alleged drug use, was eclipsed by his alleged recovery. In retrospect, it's not clear that it was wise to elect even an ex alcoholic/ex drug user as President of the United States. Even further back, Bill Clinton's apparent sex addiction was never really addressed before Monica Lewinsky. Perhaps it should have been.
Regardless of patriotism and military service, are we sure that it's wise to elevate to the highest office of the land anyone who was tortured for six/seven years?

EXCELLENT point! My Grandfather was a POW in WWII for almost a year and that experience shaped the rest of his life - still does. And he wasn't tortured. Most people never really "move on" after something like that. Part of them is dead because they had to make it so out of necessecity.

You are right. Today it is called PTSD. My dad was in WWII and was shot with a machine gun right up his leg. Until the day he died when we went to wake him up we would stand at the end of his bed and move his toe cause he would jump. He slept with a baseball bat next to his bed. You tell me it doesn;t effect a person or his family.

Keep asking him the same question until there is a legit answer, or he wigs out...whichever comes first.
Hats off to the few in the MSM that keep pushing McShame on this! And if he jumps across the table at you and starts strangling you I would really admire your dedication :-)

REALLY! I mean, it's not like McSame actually had the CHOICE of walking away OR suffering for his country. He did nothing more honorable than any serviceperson who signs up. He was just inept or unlucky enough to get caught. It happens. Like Uncle Dick says, "he volunteered. SO?"

This mock outrage is getting to be a GOP specialty. Reminds me how the Cheneys always pretended to be offended and outraged every time a democrat mentioned their gay daughter. Its a joke thats getting old.

But, given that the media is McCain's base, I don't think they need to worry overmuch about putting the media in their place. They may just are making sure that the media doesn't get the idea to prove they are not bias in favor of McCain by asking him a hard question once in awhile. McCain and co. may want to disabuse them of even thinking of trying to show they are not bias by doing that. Even those once in a blue moon hard questions to mcCain are too many for him.

given the changes we have seen in mccain in the last 7 or 8 years since the NYT rigorously defended him against the swift boaters (a name stolen from the true) ... one must ask, is mccain even the same man that was shot down?

Biography was very revealing in predicting the path of Bush if only it was recognized. Surely, the McCain bio during and after his naval experience at the academy and in Vietnam clearly defines his atributes. I cannot think of a candidate less qualified than McCain and G.W. Bush.

The reason John McCain is so upset about being asked about his service is because of General Wesley Clark. General Clark was the first one to conspicuously make the profound point that exercising good judgment is an important quality that exemplifies someone is ready to be Commander in Chief and not being a grade 6 officer or POW. The reason John McCain is so infuriated is because of Wesley Clark credentials. John McCain had no chance of making flag officer but Wesley Clark reached the highest pentacles of the Military, he was severely wounded in battle and he successfully executed one of the greatest military campaigns in the world with hardly any casualties. Since General Clark was wounded in battle also, John McCain can not lay a guilt trip on him when he gives an honest assessment of McCain’s credentials. General Clark also had the good judgment to say from the outset that the Iraq war was wrong. When General Clark says that John McCain military record does not quality him to orchestrate a large scale war like Iraq because he never was a flag officer, it focuses on the fact that a grade 6 officer (Captain in the Navy Colonel in the army) will never administer on the level as a grade 10 officer (a four star general or admiral). John McCain’s father or grandfather military experience might qualify them because they were admirals but not John McCain. Everytime Wesley Clark makes this piont, these facts hits McCain in the face like a ton of bricks.
General Clark has opened the door and I hope Obama, the media and the blogs hammer these facts home.

Attack the bearer of the truth. Discredit him in any way possible because the truth is that McSame is clearly unqualified for any position where truth is necessary. The constant lies in the face of clear evidence is proof positive of the disrespect McSame shares with Bush. The similarity of these two is astounding! How could the American voters fall into this ditch for another four years of disaster? I hope that Gen. Clark and others will repeat the truth that being a POW is not evidence of leadership or presidential qualification.

But, but if you want to sit upfront on the plane with daddy and Momma McCain you gotta play the game or else no no no you ride in the back of the plane. The reporters will play his game. I am hoping that some reporters will call him on it. But alas I doubt. We are going to get Bush III

SouthernYankee gives the American voters very little credit for intelligence and awareness when he concludes that " We are going to get Bush III". If the majority falls for this ( Republicans ) crowd for a third time it will then be clear that they deserve what they have gotten over the past 7+ years and for 4 more of the same with Sen.McSame. Surely, this can't be so. It would seem that enough is enough!

What is it about privileged kids using their conncetions in the military? Bush gets placed in storage w the Air National Guard during Vietnam. McCain graduates at the bottom of his Naval Academy class yet gets a highly distinguished fighter-jock gig. Perhaps someone will ask if McCain's family connections, dad & gramps being admirals, aided his career.
I don't recall Al Gore whoreing his Nam service during the 2000 campaign.
