AMERICAblog: McCain forgets where Spain is. English version of interview now available.
OlderButWiser
OMG, now he's moved the entire country of Spain into "this hemisphere."
No wonder he graduated 895 out of 899...could he be even less literate and more ignorant than Bush?
woodroad34
No, that's impossible. I would vote for Dan Quayle, though. McCain is in a mentally diminished capacity, ala Ronald Reagan. That, alone, makes him incompetent and dangerous. I can just see him wondering around the White House lawn, ala Henry Fonda in "On Golden Pond" just pitifully lost and confused -- probably in his underwear looking for Cindy and crying.
AP - Breaking news - Bush replaces Henry Paulson with Mr. Wolf. Markets are expected to sharply rebound on the news as insiders surely feel the Wolf can come up with a coherent and efficient plan to clean this mess up. Warren Buffet was quoted as saying: "Sh** mother f****er that is all you had to say."

So Spain is now a part of Latin America. Does he even know they are an ally of ours? Did he even know where he was? Yep, this is scarey, he's lost his mind.

no he was not being confrontational. he was being confusional. he couldn't focus on the question. reminds me of ronald reagan during his last years in office. horror.

" I have a clear record of working with leaders in the hemisphere"
I live here in DC. When I talk about someone in Europe...I'll say Europe. McCain is talking about " working with leaders in the hemisphere" That sounds like to me, McCain is talking about people in the America's hemisphere....not the hemisphere where Europe is.
I really do think McCain thought he was talking about a leader in the Americas hemisphere.....and not about one of the leaders in "another" hemisphere. (aka Europe)
I and other people don't talk and use the wording of hemisphere when we talk about Europe.

If only the interviewer had said "President Franco" he would have understood. Damn her!
OlderButWiser
And he picked a "novelty act" for VP...I mean, if Obama had picked someone who constantly touted their own state as being somehow perfect and her or himself as perfect as well, what would the outcry have been?
I wish all those female "Hillary voters" who now seem to be in love with Palin would actually emigrate to Alaska...they'd be in for a rude awakening. As a state, they're first in rape and incest and quite frankly, they wouldn't like living in 19th century conditions in many cases. Sure, there are a lot of extra men there, but are they really worth the trouble?
Alaska is nothing like the lower 48 or even Hawaii...and Americans should think about it. Would you want someone who's little more than a state booster to help govern, or even be president, of a country that is farther along in every way, and mostly quite different, than Alaska? After all, we have small cities with more population than the entire state (around 675,000 residents).

I am not giving McCain a pass here but after listening to the audio I can understand his confusion. If he was hearing the interviewer through the translator then I can see him having a problem because it was poor audio (at least to my 50 year old year ears). Given McCain's advanced years and the natural hearing loss (especially in the high frequency range) that comes with age I can see why he could get confused. My problem with this is that his pride and ego probably prevented him from simply asking for a repeat of the question. He is fighting a battle to not look old and it is costing him. His mental faculties also seem to be more diminished the last 2-3 months. Either the physical toll of campaigning is getting to him or he is beginning to mentally breakdown.

You're being too nice. Having too much pride to ask for a "repeat" shouldn't be an excuse. Bush has waaay too much pride and we all know where that's gotten us. And yes, the audio might be a little fuzzy, but I didn't have the problem with hearing 'Spain' (not 'spanish') as opposed to 'Mexico'.

woodroad34

When Bush first took over (not elected, mind you) I checked out applying for Canadian citizenship (my cousin is Canadian). It's not easy. Apparently, I wasn't the only one thinking of it. There were all kinds of seminars on how to become a Canadian citizen at that time and I went to one of the more popular ones in Los Angeles. They work on a point system and you either have to have alot of money, a sponsor, a job or something else. Then you have to wait several years. It's complicated. I'm still interested, considering the best the GOP and stupid American Voters can muster is crazy, demented, social incompetents for President.

Bear Stearns, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, AIG, Lehman and many others have not failed because the federal government REGULATED them,.
The Wall Street Collapse did not occur because the federal government over TAXED them.
They FAILED because of: - greed, - cleaver crooks, - lax oversight, and - loose laws promulgated by a CONGRESS and PRESIDENT who were too chummy with K-STREET LOBBYISTS.

Larry Crudlow on Mourning Joe actually blamed the crisis "on government forcing banks" to issue low interest loans to minorities...Even Joe (who, I think, admitted to 4 mortgages on the swank home he couldn't afford in the first place) was flabbergasted. Around 10 after 8 am, I think...

O.K. It's obvious that the man has lost his mind and really, REALLY, wants to be president, so here's what I propose. Let's let him be "president" of the nursing home that he will undoubtably be committed to once he loses the election. Considering the fugue state that he's in, he won't know the difference, and when he declares war on "Shady Pines", the devastation of his act will only be limited to him losing his pudding for a week.

I also saw the new Field Poll was released this morning showing Prop. 8 losing ground. It is now 38% yes and 55% no. The last Field Poll in July was 42% yes and 51% no. The Field Poll is the most accurate and respected poll in California.
Nobody should get complacent, but it looks like this thing is going down in flames.

Good Dog. That man has lost it. Listening to the direct English audio makes that quite obvious. Listening with the Spanish interpreter earlier led me to think that maybe he just couldn't hear the questions very good. Clearly he was hearing the questions fine but his feeble mind just couldn't process it.

the transcript says:
QUESTION: Okay... what about you, I'm talking about the President of Spain
the actual question was: QUESTION: Okay... what about Europe, I'm talking about the President of Spain?
He thought she said "What about you" Thus the answer "What about me, what?"
Still no excuse for the bumbling and faking his way through when he was clearly lost

He obviously thought he was being asked about Mexico. Rumour has it that McCain has only one campaign event per day and that's probably because of his advanced age and limited endurance. (He's OLD) Not an excuse, but he was probably supposed to be taking a nap instead of being interviewed. When the interviewer tried to re-focus him on Spain, he probably thought it was some kind of bait-and-switch tactic to throw him, and instead of realizing that the interviewer was trying to help him re-focus on the correct country, he just repeated his talking points about Mexico and friends/enemies. NONE OF THIS IS AN EXCUSE. But how many of us with older relatives can relate to this type of thing.

WAHOO!! This is the lead, top read story in Time under world headlines....
Whatever the reasons for the gaffe, I think McCain's answer that he will talk only to people and countries who share his lofty but bullshit world views puts him in direct contrast to Obama who recognizes that we must try diplomacy first and above all. McCain's parochialism and xenophobia are truly frightening. We would become closed off from the rest of the world like the former communist Albania under a McCain presidency.

This isn't McCain forgetting. this is McCain continuing the policies of George Bush:
"President Bush has never forgiven Zapatero for pulling troops out of Iraq shortly after his victory in 2004, even though the Spanish prime minister has tried repeatedly rebuild relations and win an invitation to visit Washington. Bush has yet to hold a formal bilateral meeting with Zapatero, though in March he called him to congratulate him on reelection, and in April they met briefly at the NATO summit in Bucharest."
This is MORE OF THE SAME.

Senile Johnny and Cluleless Sarah....the republican choice for President.
The republican party has given America Quayle, GWB, McPain, and "what, do you mean, Charlie". I thought leaders were supposed to be smarter, and more intelligent than regular citizens. On the other hand, it explains why dumb citizens keep voting for dumb leaders, no?

I'm as anti-McCain as the next guy (on Americablog), but I think in this case he probably just had poor audio (or poor hearing) and the first time she said Zapatero's full name, she switched into a much higher speed, spanish-accented enunciation that probably caused him not to recognize the last name. At least, that answers the first exchange ... the latter ones, not so much -- though the you/Europe thing illustrates how it was probably hard to understand the interviewer, especially if he was doing it all by phone. He certainly should have asked for clarification though, instead of just bluffing/bumbling through it.

The only words I can think of to describe this are hilarious, sad, and scary. Did the republicans see this coming and hope that no one else would? Do they think that they could control the whitehouse and the country by putting in a senile person and getting him to do what they wanted? Could Palin become president after they decry Mac insane and incompetent and have him commited a month after taking office? This is becoming just too much to bear. Not only does Mac not get it, half the country doesn't get it either!!! God, help us all...

Actually, near the end there, she is not asking "What about you?" She is asking "What about Europe?" Because he keeps talking about Latin America. McCain's response "What about me, what?" indicates that he thinks she said "you." But she didn't. So he's also deaf.

Maybe he doesn't know that Spain is in Europe. Believe it or not, there are many people that think Spain is an appendage of Mexico. The American public is not generally well versed on geography, but I am straying from the point. Here is a comment on Spain, since I live here!
I am certainly not a supporter of McCain, quite the opposite, but if he does not want to meet with Zapatero of Spain, I agree with him wholeheartedly! I live in Spain, and have for many years. Zapatero is a liar, opportunist, knows less about economics than McCain, knows little about the outside world, and is ruining Spain. The man only won reelection with the help of the Communist party here in Spain. Even representatives in the European community avoid even sitting with the man during his few visits to Brussels. (The man continuously smiles, even at funerals!) Some of the programs he pushes in Spain border on the asinine. One typical example: he recently laid a tax on all electronic devices that are capable of reproducing music with the revenues to go to those poor artists whose discs are being copied illegally. Truth is, no one buys the trash those so called artists put out. The tax was simply to garner the vote of thousands of those "failed artists" and nothing more. I could go on, but this is just a sample of the man's mentality! So, McCain, Obama, or any other Government person should continue to shun this borderline idiot like the plague! The man makes Bush look like a genius!

Didn't you hear? They moved Spain last week. They got a couple of tug boats and pulled it into the southern hemisphere right below Brazil. Portugal is still in Europe, just in case you were worried.
Just read on another blog, Sarah Palin has placed her name at the top of the GOP ticket. Now we know what to read into it. Remember the phrase, "God bless America." The new phrase will read, "God help America." With "Cowboy" McCain as president the rest of the world is going to declare this entire country insane.

HOW MANY ERRORS does McSame have to make beffore the absolute truth is realized and that is that McSame is as unqualified for high office as is his vp selection? He has become a farce , and only the " hidden factor " can even keep him in tthe race. Palin, on the other hand, has so few qualifications that it is not even worthy of discussion. Only the totally ignorant don't see it now.

The good news is it sounds as though people who are commenting here are not in need of being convinced that Obama is our man. But, Good God. Wouldn't you think that the last 8 years would have taught us something? Something along the lines that we cannot afford to have this election go to another individual who was blessed with sub-par intelligence?? Look what a stellar job our "C-" student Bush has done with our nation. Yet here comes McCain... astoundingly holding his own in the polls. The same McCain, we might add, that graduated 5th from the bottom of his class at USNA. Yup. This genius graduated 894 out of 899... 5th from the BOTTOM BOTTOM BOTTOM!!! . Unfortunately, down here in "rural" virginia - and frighteningly a mere 40 miles south of DC -- they have managed to breed a pretty ignorant bunch. The number of McCain signs is distressing ---and growing exponentially. And you just cannot talk to these people. The ignorance, prejudices and narrow-mindedness run too deep. And more frightening is that these are upper middle class individuals, many of whom commute into DC for work. The thought processes behind these little minds is nothing short of spectacularly ignorant. Suffice it say, they 'ain't the sharpest tools in the shed.' It's just really too, too bad the nation can't be color-blind for the next 44 days.
