Good catch. And 18 cents less in 2009 would probably mean gas was still $5/gal or more...yeah, trap people with so-called savings while they're losing more jobs than ever, and not just in transportation.

    Wow, that is f***ing stupid.

Who was the advisor that told McCain to say this?

Or is the Republican Party "really" trying to lose in November?
  • OlderAndWiser · 1 year ago
Let's see, the average price is now $3.39/gal (but not for long with it hovering close to a $115/bbl benchmark price)...even at $3.21 a gal, that's not much help for most people, even if he could pull it off. Of course, there are morons out there who think, oh gee, he's trying to save us money!

The real question to McCain should be: What about a tax on excess oil profits, you wanker?

Thank God McCain is this stupid. He will never win while being this dumb. Let's hope he chooses Dan Quail to be his VP so there's no inkling of intelligence anywhere on the Republican ticket.

The problem with gas is not the Federal or state tax, it is with the suppliers, Exxon, Shell, etc. Holding back on taxes will not stop suppliers from raising the price per gallon, if anything , it may encourage them to take advantage of making another nickel off the general public.. And when the "holiday" ends Americans will gasp at the cost of gasoline. This "holiday" think may be embraced by people really, really struggling to make ends meet but there will not be a pot of gold at the end of this rainbow.

The real problem with something like this idea is that it's hard to gauge at the pump: because the taxes are included in the price, the cut in tax could briefly happen then the price go up since there is no transparency in the gas price itself when you're at the pump.

My county here in upstate NY just eliminated the gas tax cap (which eliminated county tax portions on the gas price over $2, or should have worked out to about a 8 cent a gallon reduction in cost) because it didn't effectively reduce anything, given the lack of transparency in the price. The savings that resulted aren't really measurable since there's no real way to verify that the savings were being passed on to consumers at all.

So glad we take care of our working class. Between destroying jobs and hurting those who are lucky enough to have health insurance, what else could the Bush/McCain Republicans do to screw over the poor and middle class?
  • HereinDC · 1 year ago
McCain lost to Bush in 2000 and Bush has been the worst President ever//////////////////////////
So that would mean if John McCain became President...he would be worse than Bush?

    ? ? ?
