AMERICAblog: McCain plays POW card again to deflect criticism over housing gaffe

  • Laur · 1 year ago
McCain did not earn his comfortable life. His spouse inherited her wealth from her father (who did work to build his business). Neither one of this couple worked especially hard to earn the riches they now possess. Both were children of privilege.

As for the POW thing, I recommend http://www.unfitmccain.com/

Oh yes Cindy's daddy made all those millions off drinkers...and now she sends money to lobby AGAINST Mothers Against Drunk Driving. But then again what do you expect from a Barbie doll Stepford Rodeo Queen
  • Laur · 1 year ago
You're right about Cindy's daddy's fortune. I didn't know that Cindy McCain supports the lobby against MADD. Notice that I didn't previously mention the dustup about Cindy's saying she was an only child & her husband the candidate backing her up. It turned out to have been bullshit. Seems she married a guy like dear old Dad, who dumped his first wife (and small child) when he met & married Cindy's mother a few months before Cindy was born.

Daddy wrote the daughter from the earlier marriage totally out of the will--when he died in 2000, I hear that Cindy inherited the whole keg of beer--her half-sister got nothing & lives modestly in AZ.

I heard more recently that Daddy Hensley fathered an earlier child before his first marriage.

    Who are these people?

Great ad. I am so tired of McCains POW get out of jail card. I hope during the speeches at the convention, someone( hopefully Biden,) paint McCain and his 9 houses as part of being in a "bubble". He has lived in this bubble since he got out of Vietnam and married Cindy. He has been in this bubble for over 20 years. It's the same wealthy out of touch bubble that rich oil men Bush and Cheney live in. These are 3 very wealthy men who all live in the same bubble and cannot possibly understand not having enough to pay one's bills for the month. Go Joe. Then Obama can give a soaring speech about the change he envisions for America. Go Barrak.

He parades his POW status the main reason we should vote for him, that is pathetic. I knew several WWII POW's and they never used it as a "look at me, feel sorry for me", way of getting by in life.
  • Laur · 1 year ago
Isn't that the sort of victimization the conservatives charge everyone else with employing? Why didn't McCain feel for the vets @ Walter Reed? Why did he say that most of the people who were in danger of losing their houses to foreclosure were themselves to blame (this was before Phil Gramm made the infamous remarks about "nation of whiners" and "mental recession")? Of course, someone who's as comfortable as McCain is would think the economy was doing just fine. So how does that jibe, exactly, with the notion that we should be more sympathetic toward him than to military veterans who did not come from privilege?
Also, for him to have anything to do with Bush (yeah, it's the money, I know), who would have been drafted (#189) & shipped off as a grunt if he hadn't had strings pulled to get him into the TXANG, and who went AWOL--that is the mark of a person with some really bad values.

Bush and McSame are cut from the same cloth as far back as their history shows. Leopards don't change their spots and so a prediction about a McSame presidency is easy to make and a disaster to contemplate.

WANT MORE PAIN ????????VOTE McSAME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

if ... if he becomes President, will he continue to use POW to defend his mistakes?

will he use the taxpayer's money to take a motorcade to pick up coffee.

will the taxpayers be required to provide secret serve presence at all his homes.

we are already spending $150,000.00 per minute to continue his war.

Is it just me or does anyone else notice that McCain and the GOP always come up with some kind of “he said, she said” type of BS to talk about. McCain and the GOP never want to talk actual policy or ideas.

Here is an example: Biden said, "The American Dream Is Slipping Away Under Eight Years Of Bush And McCain." A clear thought and straight out point of view. McCain and the GOP will not answer this challenge. Instead, McCain and the GOP will try to change the subject with a reply like this, "Hey, did you guys see that? Biden did not wear a flag pin!"

That is what is so crazy about this press coverage. Isn't it about time we as the voting publc start challenging the GOP, McCain, Bush, Cheney. Rove, etc. on the issues? Make McCain and the GOP explain their policies and their past mistakes?

Just another example, "I was a Pow, how dare you ask about my corruption in government!"
  • ron071 · 1 year ago
The " HERO of 9/11 " will appear at the Republican convention. Rudy, the hero of 9/11, will appear on behalf of the Hero of Vietnam. How many heroes does it take to win an election? Real heroes don't pin medals on themselves. NEVER HAVE and NEVER WILL.
  • Milli · 1 year ago
    Dear John McCain,

Wanna trade sob stories? I had a crappy childhood - my dad had cancer, we lost our house, I had a debilitating illness for many years, etc. Am I allowed to use my story as a way to shield myself from my mistakes and responsibilities? As a matter of fact, can I put all that on my resume and assume that every potential employer will considered me qualified on that basis alone?. Sorry Johnny boy, we all sympathize with what happened to you in Vietnam, but ALL of us have had shitty things happen to us as well. Stop pretending that you have a monopoly on suffering because you don't. We need a president, not someone who's going to call Putin and ask him to stop doing bad things because its not fair to you and your POW past. Just a reminder John, you're looking for our votes, NOT our pity.
  • moreleesafer · 1 year ago
I thought the GOP frowned on that sort of victimization.

Maybe I can use the I'm a black woman excuse if I ever decide to car jack someone.

As I screech away in my stolen car I just scream "How dare you question me! I am a victim of racism!"

I wonder if Cindy's daddy benefitted from business loans to vets?

The McCain campaign cannot win on the issues, so they turn to deflecting criticism by playing a single issue over and over again. Bush and Co played on fear. McCain is trying the same, but he also served time in the military. Serving time is the military is honorable, but it does not make someone ready to lead the country. McCain was not a general, he was not a higher up, so what makes people think he can lead our nation? That's equivalent to someone being a people manager at a large multinational corporation thinking they can be the CEO.
  • Laur · 1 year ago
I hope that the Obama/Biden campaign can bring national issues up. It's the Economy, Stupid!.

But the corporate media will do all they can to help the Repugs deflect. Hopefully, K.O. and, in two weeks, Rachel Maddow, will be able to blow a hole in those smoked glassed mirrors.
  • lynchie · 1 year ago
I agree, put in simpler terms. McCain was a pilot, no one followed him. He did not lead a brigade of men attacking some Vietnamese brigade and show heroism by surviving and carrying his injured men out. He flew a plane, dropped bombs on whatever the hell he hit and got shot down. His total flying time was under 50 hours in combat. He broke his arm and leg in ejecting and was a Prisoner of War. Heroism is Audy Murphy who fought in the 2nd World War. What has McCain written about a single event in the last 40 years that helped forge his resolve to keep our troops in Iraq for 100 years. What single thing has he done to show this country he is an exceptional person. He cheated on his wife and family, married a multi millionairess and has never held a single job since leaving the military. So to me he is no different than a welfare recepient who has never gotten off the dole. John accepts no criticism and uses something that happened 40 years ago as an excuse. Well we all have tragedies. My Dad was killed by a drunk driver and I had to quit college to support my mother and 5 siblings, so what. Bad cards, I am not a martyr, shit happens, real heroes move on and don't whine.

McLame: "Cindy's father, who barely finished high school, went off and distinguished himself in World War II in a B-17 and came back with practically nothing and realized the American dream".

    Yep, by boot-legging.

And W's granddaddy sold arms to Hitler.

Why is it that dishonest people are the ones getting rich?
  • Laur · 1 year ago
Because they play by the rules of their own club & the laws are made by their buddies, that's why.

    Capital trumps all.

The Bush/Walker family has been in the business of funding & profiteering @ the expense of regular civilians for close to a century.
  • tlsintx · 1 year ago
    Dear McVictim,
A truly honorable former POW would never use that fact as a bludgeon to get his way or an excuse for anything.

    It's becoming sickening.
  • ShirleyGoodnessanMercy · 1 year ago
    I love that video!!!

I know several REAL heroes of war from the Viet Nam era. None of them EVER speaks of the war. None of them could ever speak of what they did in Viet Nam. Real heroes are like that.

McCain is no hero. He's a schmuck who had some bad luck. Such men never tire of trying to make people conform to their desires by using the "hero" card. Such men destroy all that is good and truly deserving of our admiration.

I spent 10 years without an ottoman.

(P.S. And I can probably make do with just 5 houses, please.)

    Milk prices are too high
My friends, I didn’t have the luxury of milk for five and a half years…in prison. My friends, milk is for pussies.

Were not doing enough to find alternative sources of energy
My friends, I lived in the dark for five and a half years -- in prison, with no light bulbs….my friends. Alternative energy is for pussies. Iran owns oil, my friends; and in six months, I’ll own Iran…….my friends.

    Healthcare is too expensive
My friends, I didn’t have healthcare in my prison for five and a half years. Healthcare is for pussies, my friends.

    The inner cities are suffering
My friends, I know about suffering. I suffered for five and half years, my friends. You’ve suffered for eight years under bush. If you can’t suffer for four more under me, you’re a bunch of pussies, my friends.

We aren’t well prepared for natural disasters
My friends, let me tell you a thing or two about disaster. I’m still paying off the school loans for my first family. Cindy won’t help. And I couldn’t save any money for five and half years while I suffered for you, my friends. If you can’t pick yourself after a flood or a hurricane….you a pussy, my friends.

    War on terror
My friends, Ive been in a war. I know how to terrorize. I took an advance class in it for five and half years as a POW. If you survive my administration, you ain’t no pussy.

    War on drugs
My friends, I only wish I had access to drugs in that hell hole I lived in for five and half years. People who use drugs are pussies. People who sell drugs are capitalists. I do not support using drugs, my friends.

    Prisons are overcrowded
My friends, let me give you some straight talk about prisons. I spent five an half years in a prison. Prisoners today are pussies.

    Economy is in a recession
My friends, I didn’t get a single check for five and half years. And yet, I survived, my friends…and so will you, my friends. ‘Cause if you don’t….you’re a pussy.

Maureen Dowd calls bullshit on McBling...

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/24/opinion/24dow...

(i'm beginning to get extremely concerned that Senator McCain is sinking what slim chance he had at the presidency with this unseemly reliance on his POW status! /concern snark)

What really is amazing is that all those Republican McMinions eat this crap up. Poor, poor John, they say. Why are you picking on a wounded veteran?
  • tlsintx · 1 year ago
it is mind boggling. they trash John Murtha, Max Cleland, John Kerry, who all served honorably, just because they're democrats....

they bow down before shirkers like bush and cheney...
and they allow McCain to get away with voting down needed funds for other wounded vets, all because he was a GOPer POW.
  • Laur · 1 year ago
Like Max Cleland, do they mean?

Once again -- why this constant mention of being PROUD? (What is wrong with Americans? They are supposedly the most religious country (OMG! No atheist could be elected president!), yet are so ignorant of the Bible. Right there -- in the Bible -- "pride goeth before a fall." Yet they are all proud of this, and proud of that. (" ... I am proud and grateful for that.")

Or is this verse yet another one that has been "misinterpreted" and rewritten by the right-wing "Christians?"

One more question: If his second father-in-law came back from WWII, practically penniless, and made it BIG, how did he do it? All by himself? Or did he get the GI Bill to go to college? If so, why is McCain so dead set against it now?
  • SarainKC · 1 year ago
The NYT has a story in their Top 10 on the Hensley family. Apparently the father in law and his brother got in bed with the mob and cornered the market in liquor just after the prohibition. Both got popped by the law, although Daddy Warbucks got probation while his brother served a year in the big house. Johnny boy should really not talk about his father in laws "good fortune".
  • lynchie · 1 year ago
Well I guess Johnie Mack's definition of the American dream is to be heavily involved with organized crime. Cindy's father had a long history of involvement with the organized crime families who controlled the liquor business across the U.S. He and Cindy, who gets a pass because she married a former POW and an adulterer were part of the Keating 5. n April 1986, she and her father invested $359,100 in a shopping center project with Phoenix banker Charles Keating.[14] This, combined with her role as a bookkeeper who later had difficulty finding receipts for family trips on Keating's jet,[21] caused complications for her husband during the Keating Five scandal, when he was being examined for his role regarding oversight of Keating's bank.

he Post also added, almost discretely, that Mrs. McCain’s wealth “may” exceed $100 million (although most sources estimate it is worth $200 million or more) and—for the record—that “she was the apple of her father’s eye.”

The Post did not mention that Mrs. McCain’s father was a highly-placed fixture in the Arizona branch of the national organized crime syndicate: He was the chief henchman of the late Kemper Marley, Arizona point man for infamous mob chief Meyer Lansky and his powerful partners-in-crime, the super-rich Bronfman family of Montreal.

In that capacity—for 40 years until his death in 1990—Marley was undisputed political boss of Arizona, acting as the behind-the-scenes power over both the Republican and Democratic parties.

    http://www.opednews.com/maxwrite/linkframe.php?...

James Hensley was well known as one of Arizona's richest men and kept much of his business dealings secret.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Hensley

Now that John has opened the door someone should pursue some investigative journalism and find out a little more. So everyone who ever served in the armed forces gets a pass on anything them may do because they served. That explains McCain's interest in a draft that way every American will have served will not be responsible for any crimes or misdemeanors they committ.

He graduated at the bottom of his Naval Academy class & was academically unfit to start pilot training. Did McCain crash 5 planes because he wasn't intelligent enough to fly them? Did he get shot down over Nam because he wasn't smart enough to engage evasive action?

If a POW could be pictured as a woman, John McCain is hiding behind her skirts. He's a coward now and a coward then. Disgusting man -- the true epitome of his party and identical twin to George "Monkey" Bush.
  • ron071 · 1 year ago
It's AMAZING that it took three days for McCain to get a prepared & scripted answer to the question of how many homes he owns. This is a classic definition off incompetence or a simple inability to answer questions truthfully. Do you remember the last McCain question/answer fiasco? It was about insurance coverage ffor Viagra and birth control medication. He also referred that one to " his staff " and never did give us the prepared answer. Not yet.
