"I'm hoping the media is going to ask why the McCain campaign spent the past 24 hours berating the media for covering this story (a story the McCain campaign leaked in the first place), and now the McCain campaign is further the "private" story with public photo ops."

John -- The answer is simple. Because Levi is part of their family -- and families stick together. All part and parcel of the values that most Americans hold dear -- though I would not expect the snarky, pseudo-intellectual, effete sophisticates A-blog to have any concept of family values.

I was unexcited about McCain until he picked Sarah Palin. I immediately sent $1500 to his campaign.

She is an ACCOMPLISHED woman and experienced executive.

Name ONE accomplishment of Barack Obama. Name ONE thing he has successively managed.

OK, Neutered Observer. ONE thing, successfully (you mean) managed: his own Presidential campaign. Which is more than McCain ever did, now or in 2000.
  • AdrianBrowne · 1 year ago
    His family.
  • nuneutralobserver2008 · 1 year ago
Does that include his half-brother who lives on a $1 day?

Or the other half-brother that is a Islamic terrorist in Kenya?
  • ZennButtKicker (tlhwraith) · 1 year ago
$1 a day, that's friggin awesome if he can pull that off. I say we give the "half-brother who lives on $1 a day" a TV special/book deal because I'm sure in the horrible economic climate the GOP has created many people would love to hear how to survive on $1 a day.

Islamic terrorist in Kenya? Really? Is that the talking points they are indoctrinating you people with nowadays?

That's a nonsensical answer. Explain why the media should leave the family alone if McCain is intent on shoving them into the spotlight, and then berating people for noticing?

EXPLAIN YOURSELF, if you can. Explain the contradiction. DO IT.
  • iWoman · 1 year ago
You name one thing Palin has accomplished. I bet it's like trying to name one decision she has made as "commander in chief" of the Alaskan National Guard.

Obama managed the Developing Communities Project, Project Vote, which registered 150,000 new voters and won Illinois for Clinton in 1992.

During his career in the Illinois State Senate, he wrote and passed the first ethics reform bill in Illinois in 25 years. He passed a death penalty reform bill that, among other things, forced all police interrogations to be taped, the first law of its kind in the country. He passed a middle class tax cut. He gave healthcare to 150,000 Illinoisans.

In the U.S. Senate, Obama was in the minority for his first two years but still worked with Republican Tom Coburn to pass the Obama-Coburn Transparency Bill, which set up an online searchable database where every dollar of federal spending can be tracked and accounted for.

In January 2007, Obama co-sponsored the Honest Leadership and Open Government Act, which was signed into law in September 2007. It strengthens public disclosure requirements concerning lobbying activity and funding, places more restrictions on gifts for members of Congress and their staff, and provides for mandatory disclosure of earmarks in expenditure bills.

(I love how Palin says she's a "reformer," but she's actually the one under investigation and Obama is the one cleaning up the government. Republicans = empty rhetoric, Democrats = action.)

Obama worked with Republican Dick Lugar on locking down loose nuclear weapons in the former Soviet Union. He also worked with Sam Brownback to send millions of dollars in aid to war-torn Congo.

As a member of the VA committee, Obama garnered more funding to VA hospitals around the country including Walter Reed. He helped pass the new GI bill.

I could go on and on, but I think I met your pathetic challenging of naming one accomplishment Obama has done.

Then again, Bush II was a governor II and even his own party won't talk to him. You're arguement is a strawman arguement at best and I wish the Dems would have the proper response which is just because you've been the boss, doesn't mean you were good at it.

Palins problem doesn't appear to be not actually sitting in the governors chair, it's the entirety of what she did while sitting there.

I see McCain taking young, bullheaded Levi by the hand and "mentoring" him over the next few months. "That boy is just like I was at that age. Levi is Naval Academy material..." Many, many grandfatherly squeezes of the shoulders. Many, many interludes together, surrogate grandpap and young boy, quietly walking together at the Sedona ranch, communing with God's Nature, knowing that their bond will last for eternity, even though Pap John's time on earth is only fleeting...

Pap John and Levi looked with breathless wonder at the changing leaves on the mountainside birches. Could this be a symbol of Pap John's final days on earth? Levi was quaking with fear at the prospect of Momma Sarah's becoming the Leader of the Free World. He had never really forgiven her for dicking him over with the National Media. He had planned to hang out with his buds, chill after high school, and he dreaded the idea of being trapped by Bristol and those kids. But Pap John came into his life and made him realize the wondrous gift of life in a way that his own father couldn't...

Do we get to ask these questions - or is he off limits, too?

The real reason McCain's folks keep bringing up the daughter is to inoculate themselves from a real discussion of Palin's background and experience. Consuming Traditional and Cable media is infuriating because the Palin conversation is always brought back to Junogate. Most often it is GOP folks doing it. I'm sure that today's talking points directed the operatives to mention the baby as much as possible. First, to cut off all real discussion of McCain's vetting and Palin's past. Second, in the hopes that they can incite a Brooks Brothers feminist riot, complete with backlash and popular sympathy.

Pap John was almost ready to leave for Washington for his Inaugural. Levi was devastated at the thought of having to give up the many hours Pap John had devoted to him. As they gazed on the snowy red mountains around magical Sedona, Pap gave Levi a last knuckle bump for good luck and said, "See ya around, ya little jerk." "Goddamn," Levi burst out, "I'm gonna miss ya, old dude. I don't wanna go back to that shithole Alaska. Can't you find me an internship in the White House, so we can be together..."

[tear forms in Pap John's eye, camera tracks it as it slowly runs down his deformed cheek]

[Levi lowers his head and kicks at the dust]

"Heck, maybe I can get you a job with Tom DeLay's re-election committee... he can use all the help he can get, and you seem to have a good head on your shoulders. One word of advice, stay away from the Congressmen from Florida and Utah... if they say they want to get to know you better, tell 'em you're strictly "AC".... "tic-toc"? what kind of crap is that?

How much has the economy been covered at the convention, besides "Obama will raise your taxes!!!"? (which is blatantly wrong). How much solid ideas about Iraq? How much foreign policy discussion?

When I've tuned into the Republican convention, ALL I hear about is Obama (and what I've heard is generally innuendo or outright lies), or people defending the Palin choice - in direct opposition to the Right's previous comments about the other side.

I'm actually a pretty even-handed person, but it looks like this is the silver lining: when everybody is in a frenzy about Palin's vetting, the Right doesn't have to discuss difficult stuff like how to run a country.

I understand what you are saying except last night at the convention we
saw speaker after speaker launch into an anti-Obama diatribe as
conventioneers were chanting "U S A" like a frenzied football team.
What little of the convention I did see I did not hear anyone discuss
any issues from the MaCain side; although perhaps MaCain himself will
take that opportunity tonight. The American people are not stupid and
they know who is talking about issues and who is just delaying and
detracting everyone's attention off of the point. Truth is Republicans
have nothing to stand on except 8 y of failed Bush policies. I still
say that the Dems' best offense is to refer to Bush as much as possible.

I'm EMBARRASSED to be from Ohio. Even in Minnesota where the RNC is being held, Obama tops MaCain in th polls, but not in red-neck state of Ohio. When did my home state become the dumb-fuck christian state?

Many are still mind-whammied by the terror fear and see McCain as a leader. Obama has to drive home to these fearful women and men his magnetic leadership skills in the debates with McCain and his ruthless protection of the American mainland coupled with the exercise of a foreign policy no less ruthless by its intelligence and compassion.

Ohioans, you've lost jobs in record numbers and the housing crisis has impacted your state the most of all Midwestern states. Haven't you suffered enough? Why do you come back for more?

Don't blame us up in northeast Ohio! It's those people down south.

I'm sorry but OH has become fodder for new x-File movies; like a woman
    reportedly microwaved her child?!

OK OK to be fair it really is due to the fringe down near Cincinnati.
I've been there - it's scary. If it wasn't for OSU Columbus would be
    one big Christian congregation.

Quick question....is there any sort of illegality with the age of consent here? Even though they are "going to get married," is it legal for an 18 year-old male to have sex with a 17 year-old? I was always told that once you hit 18, you were an adult and it was against the law to have sex with a 17 year-old.

I'm convinced that's why Levi is "doing the right thing here"... if she's 5 months preggers at 17, chances are he knocked her up when she was still 16.

umm... what's the word I'm looking for? oh! JAILBAIT.
  • mr723 · 1 year ago
True. I wonder how close he is to 19 and how close she is to 16...any birthday info on the two of them?
  • alaskan · 1 year ago
Too bad birthdates were removed from Wikipedia or you could find out.

"Levi, you knocked her up... and my "base" and I are proud of you." - John McCain

    some 'family values'
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
Oh, let the kid enjoy is 2 minutes of fame because after that it is all downhill. Levi will marry Bristol sometime before the election (just to confuse the press). November 15 or there about Levi will divorce Bristol. Mamma Palin will not like that and when she returns as governor (after losing the election) she will damn sure Levi is run out of the state.

So, I say let him have his 2 minutes of fame.

I think the big idea here is to bring the 7 time homeowner down to the average Joe level...

like dobson said... this proves the palin family is 'human', as it happens all the time. So they're embracing it as "Yeah, even among OUR types, this happens... we're just like YOU, see?"
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
Golly will the McCain's give Levi and Bristol a condo???
  • Soundboy_jeff_meanie · 1 year ago
the house in LaJolla... they just have to pay the back taxes.

considering this is turning into an immaculate conception... maybe they'll drag out the videotape Levi made when he and the rest of the football team were taking turns?

okay, my bad... but they're really stretching their religious right charter by embracing this.

it just shows it really is ALL about money and power... nothing to do with religion at all.

in biblical times, she'd be stoned... and I don't mean they'd force her to finish that bottle of Captian Morgan she's holding in that one picture.

If I were still 18 and got some 17 year old pregnant, I would expect the girls father (maybe even mother if she was an NRA member) to come after me with a shotgun, and not for a shot gun wedding. This guy gets Palin's 17 year old daughter pregnant and gets dragged off to the RNC as a celebrity to meet the Presidential candidate.

Isn't there something seriously wrong with this picture. When did Family Values become idiocy?
  • Soundboy_jeff_meanie · 1 year ago
to tell the truth... I'm not sure if they KNOW for a fact that Levi is the father.

there was a myspace page that mysteriously disappeared, a different boy proclaiming his love for Bristol '4ever'.

who knows exactly how much 'abstinence' Bristol practiced... and with whom?
  • fredndallas · 1 year ago
Hopefully the Obama people have an understanding of this and are making effective strategies, because many in the progressive community don't seem to get it.

Evangelicals are self-preserving fanatics. Truth and purity mean ZERO to them. The only thing important is their ability to feel "better than" others. In this case, they can "feel better" than others because they know in their hearts that Palin and her family are "good sinners" who are trying to do the "right thing" and they embrace them warmly for it. Others who criticize the Palins just don't understand -- they don't have the "evangelical insight" with their focus on Palin's (factual) actions betraying the code -- that's what the fanatics expect from sinners, after all. I'm telling you NOTHING is going to break the evangelical fanaticism of support for Palin. The McCain people know this.

Meanwhile the dust up, progressive and media outrage at the hypocrisy is and will take the focus totally off of McCain's jackass behavior, charade and dozen house arrogance over the whiners. The McCain people know this.

Perhaps Palin's nomination will be pulled back, though it is not likely. But if it does not succeed in nomination or election it will NOT be for lack of evangelical support. These people are NOT thinkers and they couldn't care less about facts.

What is important is the rest of the electorate and getting the visibility back on the issues. At the moment the Repubs are succeeding brilliantly with their "create your own reality", "it's not about the issues" tactics.

All of us need to detach from the insulting outrage of this pick (which confirms all we know about McCain) and get back to the business of keeping the country from going down the drain. McCain has solidified the theocrazy vote and motivation now. Every second wasted now is bad for us.

(PS to John: Interesting to see you use the "buzzword" "hypocrisy" now. Hmmm.)

I wonder what the Republicans would do if Democrats started saying things like, "Poor Bristol. Just like Elizabeth Edwards, she's been completely humiliated by her family member's personal ambition."

How would they respond to that, I wonder?
  • BostonJoe · 1 year ago
Elizabeth Edwards probably isn't embarrassed about John running for president. She probably is embarressed that Hillary didn't get the nomination because of his actions.

This is a good Christia tale of man's foibles caused by original sin. The story humanizes and normalizes the Palin clan and sets the stage for the abortion debate. Rise, fall and redemption all in just 17 years of existence. Whether the abrotiuon debate is a winner for the repubs remains to be seen.

Obama may want to float above sordid stories about a pregnant teenager. But if the Rethugs themselves are thrusting her and her accomplice into the spotlight, all bets are off.

Here are some quotes from Levi Johnson, her boy friend. Now isn't he going to be a great addition to her Christian family? I realize he is only 18 yrs old but really folks . . .

    "Levi Johnston Quotes
Levi Johnston: I don't want kids.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Levi Johnston: Ya f*** with me I'll kick your ass.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Levi Johnston: I like to go camping and hang out with the boys, do some fishing, shoot some s**t and just f***in' chillin' I guess.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Levi Johnston: I'm a f***in' redneck who likes to snowboard and ride dirt bikes. But I live to play hockey.

fredndallas, you are correct in your assessment of how the evangelicals will take this. Also, I believe the McCain camp is keeping this alive. Let me try to explain. The conversation goes on and on in the media. It doesn't matter if the Obama campaign and the other Dems are discussing it or not. The extreme right, remember, believes that all MSM is just a mouthpiece of the democratic party. (We may know better, but they are convinced of it.) So, the more the MSM talks about it, the more it looks as if the Dems are attacking this simple small town family who had something unfortunate happen (like any family might), and "isn't it just disgusting the way the MSM and the Dems won't let go of this, and leave these children alone." Don't think for a minute that some of the krazy kristian kooks aren't following that line of thought, and the Repubs are experts at controlling the message in that way.

So, I believe the McCain people are making a big thing of it in fact, while saying it's a topic that's off limits. Others on here also note that it is a distraction from the real issues of Palin's qualifications, and McCain's idiocy. This helps with that...right now, the Repubs are running two lines of talking points to quash any opposition to Palin:

    1. Since she's a woman, anything negative you might say about her is an insult to all women.

    2. Anyone who makes any critical comment has the Repub on the panel immediately bring up the preganancy issue (whether that was the topic or not), in such as a way as to say..."why do you keep bringing that up. What a great thing that the family is stickng together through all this, and Bristol is doing the right thing by keeping the baby, and I just don't understand why you keep criticising this family."

My recommendation is that not one single Democratic operative should even participate in a discussion that involves teen pregnancy right now. We all need to completely shut up so that the MSM runs out of foils to run the story against. Then it will die slowly...but the Repubs will try to keep it going for a while. It's a great tool for them. (A tool for the tools.)
