AMERICAblog: McCain taking "energy" supplement also used for Alzheimer's and dementia

This is out of line. These supplements are available to anyone and not a controlled substance. Yeah, McCain is worried about senility dementia and Alzeheimers, but aren't we all. At 62, I certain am. Do you have proof that a doctor has diagnosed these conditions? Over the counter supplements as much as we may read into them, are meaningless. These charges are as baseless as the accusations that Obama pals around with terrorists.
sputnik

Huh. Does Obama take them? If so, then I see your point.
vkobaya

Does Obama take them
Do you know?
This isn't a doctor's diagnosis. It is just the fears of someone who is a senior citizen. Obama knows he's too young but fears the day when it becomes a possibility as wel all do.
michaelt

would you agree that if your worried about senility and dementia, then maybe it's not a good idea for you to run for president?
vkobaya
I hate McCain enough that I don't want Obama to be anything like him. Everyone fears senility dementia and Alzeheimers. So your criteria excludes all of us from ever running from president. I would take those supplements, but I'm not senile enough yet to believe that crap is anything more than a rip off. Unfortunately most Americans don't have enough scientific training to recognize the bullshit involved in those claims. It isn't a matter of senility that he believes the claims, rather that he wasn't trained as scientist and doesn't have the disciplined knowledge to comprehend the falseness of the claims about supplements. By your criteria, I would be unable to support anyone who hasn't been trained as I was as a biochemist, no mathemeticians, no doctors, no engineers, no physicists, no biologists, no chemists, and definitely no English majors, business majors, poly sci majors, language majors, only biochemists are qualified to be the president of this nation. Might be a good idea, though. as I know the rest of you are idiots. In fact, I would say that only biochemists who are trained in respiration and electron transport, the utilization of oxygen by mitochondria are qualified and intelligent enough to be president. <g>

I'm supporting Obama, but I want to hold my head up high doing so. If we sink to the shitty level of McCain then I can't support Obama. We have to take the higher road or there is no difference, no reason at all to pick Obama over McCain other than the symbolism of Obama being a Black man. Admittedly, yeah, that is a very important reason, but it is rendered meaningless if there is no other difference between them when McCain isn't even bothering with the low road but burrowing into the ground in his eagerness to get to hell.

I'm almost 66 and my husband 68. Neither of us is worried about dementia in any form at this point, but if a presidential candidate is worried about it, if people see signs of it in him, wouldn't the honorable thing be to not run? Plus, look at the backup.

"Do you have proof that a doctor has diagnosed these conditions?" No, of course not. McCain never fully released his medical records, so we're forced to wonder why a 72 year old man with repeated cases of melanoma and an odd twitching is taking snake oil that's not officially medication (so it doesn't have to be disclosed as such) that's supposed to benefit people suffeing from Alzheimer's. Because McCain is too much of a coward to fully release his medical records, every odd blinking, every time he seems forgetful or confused or lost, every cough and sneeze seems exponentially more curious and potentially more serious. I'm sure McCain would put everyone's minds at ease if he fully released his medical records. None of this "select reporters can look at some of my records, all jumbled out of order, for a few hours on a Friday afternoon, and they can't take pictures, at a rate of one page every 10 seconds" horsecrap. Full disclosure. But he won't, either because he's a coward, or because he's sicker than he lets on...AND he's a coward.

McCain appeared to be out of breath most of the time and desperate as he tried to deliver his "I love America cuz I'm a POW" talking points. Being so old, it's hard for him to talk and move at the same time. This guy needs to retire. Neither he or Palin are competent or qualified to handle the rigors of being president, especially at this very volatile point in US history.
There's a lot out there on McCain taking a stand against steroid use and steroid users, seems when it will benefit himself he's not so choosey.

Gotta agree with vkobaya on this. This kind of guilt-by-association isn't any better when "we" do it than when "they" do it. How many times are specific foods posted about in this blog by its principals? If those foods help with dementia, does that make the posters suspect? Yeah, they "aren't running for anything", but still...

Yes, you're right. McCain won't do any press conferences, he won't release his medical records, he's 72, has had 4 bouts of serious cancer, and is showing signs of erratic behavior and physical problems like the facial spasms - oh, and he wants to run the most powerful nation in the world during war time. Rather than get to the bottom of this, we should simply say "eh, they won't tell us anything so we're not going to investigate because it would be mean." Sorry, but this is our country, and the world, at risk here. We're not going to stop investigating what is going on with John McCain's health when it's John McCain's own choice to no longer come clean with the American people.

I'm NOT suggesting McCain should be given a pass on his medical issues! Just that (over?)reaching to whatever supplements he may or may not be taking is detracting from the main focus on his actual medical records. This could dilute the strength of the argument for more access to those records. Please don't paint me as some kind of apologist for him :-)
slappymagoo
"guilt by association?" Really? THAT'S what you think this is? Wow, that's sad. The American people are forced to speculate on every sneeze and cough and random blink and fart McCain does, because he never fully released his medical records. We have a right to know that a potential president has at least a fighting chance of making it through a term. If there were any indication that, for example, Obama was suffering from hypertension or heart disease the right would be constantly clamoring for him to come clean. O'Reilly would demand that Obama perform a full medical exam, including hernia check, colonoscopy, and knowing O'Reilly, probably a pap smear, live, on his show. And they wouldn't stop bleating about it until it was done. And then they'd want a second opinion.
But a 72 year old cancer survivor who suffered ill health as a POW, who won't fully release his medical records and who takes supplements that claims to combat the severe effects of memory loss that comes with aging? yeah, nothing to see here, move along, pay no attention to the elephant behind the curtain.

Ironic considering reported harmful side effects among the population and the light regulatory touch these herbal "remedies" receive from the Federal government thanks to Rethugs like borin Orrin Hatch... All this aside, Johnny campaigned last night like it was 1957.
larz
It's like "Valley of the Dolls" in the McCan't household.
As you mention, we already knew that John McCain was taking Ambien to sleep. People groggy from their sleeping medication routinely resort to remedies to treat that side effect. This herbal supplement sounds like it is being used for that purpose, and perhaps for other purposes as well. I would not be the least surprised if McCain were not also adding other "remedies" to his daily cocktail of medicines. His erratic behavior, strange affect, memory problems and confusion can easily be the result of a mix of mind-altering substances and their lingering after effects. Let's be clear. The great majority of seventy-two-year-old men do not exhibit these symptoms of mental decline. Something else is going on here -- medication side effects or some disease process. We can only guess what it might be without more information.

I think it's a mildly interesting tidbit, but I'd hold off on conclusions, even with McCain. Lots of people take supplements for 'energy', and many ingredients are helpful against Alzheimers, ADD, dementia, etc. Personally, I take some supplements that protect against age-related memory decline - and I have zero family history for that, nor am I old enough to 'need' it - it just seems like the right thing to do, long term. I also consume large amounts of green tea - that doesn't mean I have or am worried about certain diseases, but just how I like my caffeine.
Now, if it turns out he's under medication for dementia, that'd be something else...
John Aravosis
Yes, a 72 year old man, who in 4 months could have his finger on the button, is taking supplement uppers while taking Ambien downers at the same time, all the while acting increasingly erratic and refusing to come clean about his health or his medical records (or anything else, since he's oddly stopped doing press conferences). Nothing to see here, move right along.
stefanzo
No, that's not what I'm saying at all. I'm saying that taking supplements in themselves - and even sleeping pils - in moderation, is not something to get worked up about. I have friends who do exactly this, and for them it's nothing nefarious.
If it turns out he's taking LOTS of sleeping pills (very possible) and he's taking supplements *instead* of medicine because, say, he doesn't want any official record of anti-dementia medication (also very possible), then that's news for sure, and definitely worth someone's time to look into it.
But getting outraged based on so little evidence to support the Worst Case Scenario doesn't help us at all. As vkobaya says it's rumor mongering. It's what "they" do. There's PLENTY to get outraged over, without needing hyperbole and an active imagination.
vkobaya
Exactly! No doubt his dementia is in his medical records as well as his cancer prognosis. But supplements that he uses are meaningless. This rumor mongering of the Swiftboat sort and beneath Democrats whom I support because I believe they are better than the Republicans. There is no reason to be a Democrat if there is no difference between Democrats and Republicans. As it is Obama has lied to us, just far more acceptable lies than those of McCain. But when the diffeences disappear, then I will just as soon vote for Nader, McKinney, Pat Paulsen, Mickey Mouse or Yosemite Sam.

John, I agree with you that McCain's health is an issue, and I appreciate the attempts you've been making to get it into the discussion. But this is a stretch. I take a lot of the stuff in this supplement, and I'm 57, an athlete, healthy, and have a lot of my mental faculties intact. (I'm a committed Democrat and Obama supporter, so that indicates some degree of mental health!)
Millions of Americans take supplements like these every day. To imply that they are therefore senile or pre-dementia is not a great tactic. And it really doesn't make logical sense.
I completely support your other attempts to get someone in the MSM to focus on this issue, but I don't see this as the way to do that. I could be wrong of course.
devlzadvocate

I think the issue is symptoms/behavior + non-release of medical records (unknown prognosis) + past known history + supplements = possibly unfit for duty. The mystery man is not Barack Obama. It is John McCain.

Bingo. I'm happy to stop theorizing if John McCain would just tell us what is wrong with him and release his complete records for longer than ten seconds a page. Until then, we theorize or we get a president who may have something seriously wrong with him while hiding it from the public.

OT: here is an article by the one and only Ben Stein, the Republican Party's answer to a movie star.
He goes through the list of things that caused the financial meltdown. What he doesn't say is that he was trumpeting these very same actions when the took place. Watching the short documentary on the Keating Five that Obama’a camp put out this week, I noticed McCain blinking often during the congressional hearing part. I’ve written this off as something he just does.
As for the eye twitching and facial spasms, I have a different take on it. I could be wrong, but…
Up until my young adulthood I was plagued with ear infections. As a baby they were so severe, one bout paralyzed half my face for six months. This caused nerve damage to that side.
When I’m under stress and tired that side of my face has spasms. My eye will appear to be lazy, wanders a bit which he doesn’t appear to have. However it blinks independently (slow) of the other and there are times it will spasm.
As we all know, he has had major surgery on that side of his face. He is under a ton of stress and he has to be tired.
Maybe this is the only thing McCain and I don’t differ on.
John Aravosis
Then he can say that. But it is kind of odd that we're noticing all of these symptoms at the same time the McCain campaign has taken him off of doing press conferences, and has limited him to one event a day.
Gwyn
I’m not defending McCain or his camp, just trying to give insight from someone that lives with a similar condition.
During the times when my face is acting up, I am stressed and tired. When people make comments to me about my eye and face, all I can do is shrug. Or turn it around by saying “at least you know I’m giving it my all since this only happens when I’m tired” There’s nothing I can do about it or would I care to; my focus is getting the job at hand done.

the issue with taking this sort of supplement, or any supplement that boosts energy levels, is that prolonged use can cause adrenal fatigue--which overtaxes the endrocrine system responsible for the production of hormones--chemicals which regulate bodily functions
an energy booster combined with a sedative such as ambian is a harsh combination for any endocrine system, let alone one that is 72yrs old and constantly taxed by the stresses of travel and campaign appearances
keep in mind that Romo is famous for losing his cool during games and practices--he spit in the face of an opponent in one game and shattered the jaw of a teammate during a fight in practice; Romo was a long time user of herbal supplements which he got from Balco--the barry bonds steroid pusher
And the McCain campaign wants to discuss associations? Romo was a great linebacker and a fierce competitor but he crossed the line with his actions on the game and practice field

Actually, McCain's countenance reminds me of my dad.... My father is also a Repub. and an active War Vet (Korea). My father is a few years older, but never got captured as a POW. Yet, he did grow up during the Great Depression... My father is incredibly tough and all the technical and cultural changes in the modern era do tend to irritate him. I see a lot of similarities, just based on war service and the generation they hail from. That being said, my father enjoys good health and currently supports Obama, as he supported Kerry, once he realized what a "bullshitter" Bush was, as he described it. Also, he could not accept Bush exploiting the military, which apparently is not a problem for McCain? It would be great to see someone who abandoned all integrity finally get their due. McCain is just too cranky, period. At least my father finally retired and takes on grandpa duties now. I still respect my elders though!!

The one thing that stood out to me about McCain last night was that he sounded very breath-y during the early parts of the debate. Almost as if he was laboring to breathe as if he just finished a jog. If it were someone who was less used to debates and public speaking, I might have chalked it up to nerves, but that sure ain't the case. Maybe it's nothing, but that's the one thing that stood out to me.
Oh, and the other thing that has become apparent to me is that McCain has slowed down a fair amount since 2000. Every once and a while, they show a clip of him talking about something during his last run for president and the speed and sharpness in which he speaks with now has noticeably changed. While you wouldn't bother to care if this were any person who has aged 8 years from 64 to 72, this particular person could be our next president. It's a big damn deal if this guy isn't as sharp as he used to be. It's not ageism; it's reality.

Bottom line - none of this would be an issue if McCain released his medical records to the public. Since he won't, every piece of information we do get about his health is necessarily fair game for scrutiny. So yeah, by itself, the fact that McCain is taking some kind of crazy energy supplement is not newsworthy, but in context of the troubling secrecy surrounding his condition, it's very newsworthy.
McCain could end all of this speculation with one act of transparency. As long as he doesn't, and given the enormous stakes involved, there is no appropriate limit to the extent of that speculation. We are talking about a candidate for president of the US, not some movie star.

I am not a doctor, but I am long-time patient since I have been feeling totally awful for 15 years -- everyday. Very long story! Fibromyalgia, Lyme Disease, Adrenal failure, low thyroid, vulvodynia, --- basically constant fatigue and pain. I am only 43 (female).
Anyway, I avoided meds for a long time, but now am on several prescription meds, including Tramadol for pain, and Trazadone for sleep and antidepressants, thyroid meds, adrenal support....
Okay, here is my point: I am SO sure that McCain is nearing death's door. I would bet he croaks within a year. And his medical records should be released AND a new medical exam from an independent dr should be preformed.
However, the ingredients on that supplement label are no big deal. I have taken every ingredient listed, along with all my meds for years. And my dr is a naturopath who is trained in the whole combining drugs/supplements thing. Now, I know nothing about Ambien... so I could be way off there. And god knows what other meds he is on. I am not saying that what he is doing is a good idea, just that in no way should we jump to the conclusion that these herbs etc are a big player. They MIGHT be, but I highly doubt it.
The supplements could have really wigged him out I suppose, everyone has a different reaction. John, I would highly suggest you read the book "Mood Cure". A well thought of book and a very readable explanation of the supplements listed. It is really a great book for anyone with any sort of mood disorder! It is written by a doctor, can't remember her name.
Well, just my layperson's two cents.

I've taken Ambien. I had to stop because of the side effects, among them a real stupor the next day--every time I took it. I absolutely think it is a BAD drug, and the thought that our president was taking them scares the bejeebers out of me.
I was repeatedly struck during the debate at how bad McCain looked. Even without comparing him with Obama, who looked the picture of health, McCain looked tired. He shuffled. He just looked old--older than age alone would suggest. My 91 year old father looks like he has more energy. I predict a Bad Event happening within 6 months--with or without a win.
Did anyone see Jay Leno's clips of the way he wandered like he was out of it? They didn't look doctored--I remember seeing some of them during the debate.
Then again, it wouldn't be a problem. Selecting Palin assures us that the country would be in good hands...right?

I do not think that John McCain has Alzheimers due to the fact he would be showing more symptoms. Alzheimers victims have more problems than what Mr. McCain has shown. Everyone forgets things. I am 21 and I forget simple things like my address and other important things. John McCain does, yes in fact have a sydrome called Tourrettes. That would explain the facial tics- not convulsions. Tourrettes does not show itself constantly, only when aggravated, such as stress. Also. The Nero 1 is not recommeded for dementia and Alzheimers by medical doctors.
Do you know?
This isn't a doctor's diagnosis. It is just the fears of someone who is a senior citizen. Obama knows he's too young but fears the day when it becomes a possibility as wel all do.

All this aside, Johnny campaigned last night like it was 1957.

Now, if it turns out he's under medication for dementia, that'd be something else...

Do we even know how many different medications he is on besides tthe supplementals.
I can see it now, " Honey, answer the red phone. Honey, honey...???"
I'm still voting for Obama. When I start taking supplements, I will be senile enough to vote for McCain.
I'm most worried for retired seniors right now. My 401k is just paper to me at this point, not my lifeline like it is to them. Unfortunately, to retired seniors, their 401k's aren't just paper. It is their means for survival.

He goes through the list of things that caused the financial meltdown. What he doesn't say is that he was trumpeting these very same actions when the took place. The Neocons never share any responsibility when everything turns to shit. Like Iraq and now Afghanistan they simply turn away and say well guess what "That One" did it.

Mr. Obama appeared strikingly presidential last evening, an interesting mix of JFK with young, fresh Sammy Davis Jr.'s stage presence.
Is McSleepyhead up yet?
I mentioned earlier in another thread that he made me so proud last night when he stated affordable healthcare is an American right. It's a gutsy position and one I'm glad to see pushed to the forefront right now.
an energy booster combined with a sedative such as ambian is a harsh combination for any endocrine system, let alone one that is 72yrs old and constantly taxed by the stresses of travel and campaign appearances
keep in mind that Romo is famous for losing his cool during games and practices--he spit in the face of an opponent in one game and shattered the jaw of a teammate during a fight in practice; Romo was a long time user of herbal supplements which he got from Balco--the barry bonds steroid pusher
And the McCain campaign wants to discuss associations? Romo was a great linebacker and a fierce competitor but he crossed the line with his actions on the game and practice field

My father is also a Repub. and an active War Vet (Korea).
My father is a few years older, but never got captured as a
POW. Yet, he did grow up during the Great Depression...
My father is incredibly tough and all the technical and cultural
changes in the modern era do tend to irritate him. I see a lot
of similarities, just based on war service and the generation
they hail from.
That being said, my father enjoys good health and currently
supports Obama, as he supported Kerry, once he realized
what a "bullshitter" Bush was, as he described it. Also, he
could not accept Bush exploiting the military, which apparently
is not a problem for McCain?
It would be great to see someone who abandoned all integrity
finally get their due. McCain is just too cranky, period. At least
my father finally retired and takes on grandpa duties now.
I still respect my elders though!!
(if only McCain had more strength of personal character, virtue or integrity!)
McCain could end all of this speculation with one act of transparency. As long as he doesn't, and given the enormous stakes involved, there is no appropriate limit to the extent of that speculation. We are talking about a candidate for president of the US, not some movie star.
