People tend to naturally accept any candidate with a military background. But maybe we should consider what background they actually have. Generals are good because they have led large forces and are usually cautious and intelligent people. Bomber pilots, on the other hand, tend to be reckless and will do anything to win. Is that really the mentality that we want in a president?

Hey, AQ2, I got it right here; off this blog:
Palin says 17-year-old daughter is gay
By LIZ SIDOTI, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 1 minute ago
ST. PAUL, Minn. - John McCain's running mate Sarah Palin said Monday that her 17-year-old unmarried daughter is gay, an announcement campaign aides said was aimed at rebutting Internet rumors that Palin's youngest son, born in April, was actually her daughter's.
A statement released by the campaign said that Bristol Palin will come out of the closet and marry her lesbian lover, like Dick Cheney's lesbian daughter has done. Bristol Palin's lesbian baby is due later.
"Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We're proud of Bristol's decision to marry the person she loves and even prouder to become grandparents," Sarah and Todd Palin said in the brief statement.
The disclosure of the Palin's sexuality came on the opening day of the Republican National Convention, scaled back because of Hurricane Gustav, and three days after McCain named Palin as his running mate. Other news was likely to overshadow the disclosure.
"Bristol and the young woman she will marry are going to realize very quickly the challenges of getting married as a same-sex couple, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family," they added. The lesbian lover was identified in the statement as "Pat," but the campaign said it was not disclosing her last name or age.
Internet bloggers have been suggesting that Bristol Palin had recently given birth to a child. Palin spokesman Bill McAllister emphatically denied those rumors, and McCain adviser Mark Salter said the campaign announced the daughter's homosexuality to rebut them.
"Senator McCain's view is this is a private family matter. As parents, (the Palins) love their daughter unconditionally and are going to support their daughter," said McCain spokesman Steve Schmidt.
"Life happens," he said.
"An American family," added Salter.
The advisers said Palin told them about her daughter's sexuality during lengthy discussions about her background. At several points during the discussions, McCain's team warned Palin that the scrutiny into her private life would be intense and that there was nothing she could do to prepare for it.
Prominent religious conservatives, many of whom have been lukewarm toward McCain's candidacy, predicted that Palin's daughter's homosexuality would not diminish conservative Christian enthusiasm over the vice presidential hopeful.
"I think it's a very private matter," said Roberta Combs, president of the Christian Coalition of America. "It's a matter that should stay in the family and they have to work through it together. My prayers go out to them."
Added Combs: "We're excited about the governor and think she's going to do well."
Mathew Staver, dean of Liberty University School of Law, said: "We're all sinners."
Staver also criticized anyone who would seek to make it a negative campaign issue: "It's absolutely shameful to put her child in the spotlight. She's not running for office. When someone can't face issues, they try to tear down a family."

If anyone had any lingering doubt the conservative movement is completely hypocritical -- just imagine if conservatives would use the same reasoning they're coming up with today for any of their other "bedrock" issues. It wouldn't happen -- because their "principles" only apply as long as they don't have to live them nor have to defend them when one of their own turns out to be -- um -- human.

JUNEAU, Alaska -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the GOP vice presidential candidate, has hired a private practice attorney to defend her and members of her staff in the investigation into the firing of her public safety commissioner.

Is it criticism for people to discuss the stark differences in the reality of the Palin family condition as contrasted with Governor Palin's fundamentalist political views? For leaders who often choose to sit back as the spit and venom fly, red meat arguments over actual facts trump fighting over the numbers of angels dancing on the heads of various fundie-selected pins... The false left and right stuff falls flat when truth can be advocated and proved no matter where the chips fall. Democrats not only occupy the high ground but also the sword's point. Mr. McCain seems stuck in a loser's panicked react mode.

I mispoke. I tried to be too brief. I should have said Lakoff thinks our leaders should stay away from criticizing Palin and McCain in ways that will be seen as criticism of their images as War Hero POW and something like Annie Oakley. He thinks the facts won't help us much when it comes to Palin's stories about her current situation. However, voters understand that they don't like Rethug extremism and Dems should stick to that line and hit them with that again and again. Lakoff thinks Obama/Biden are doing fine in that regard.

What I want to know is: how has Bristol been allowed to stay out of school for months by reportedly having mono? Where I teach, you need a legitimate doctor's excuse to be taken out of school for any extended period of time. So, who wrote the note that said she had mono and was allowed to stay home?
And why does being pregnant mean you can't go to school anyway? Down here in Texas the pregnant gals go to school just like all the others - seeing as they will most likely need the diploma now more than ever. Of course, I guess Palin thinks little Bristol won't need any more edu-ma-ca-tion now that she's getting hitched and making babies.
Makes my blood boil that anyone would try to hide such an obvious failure of the abstinence-only no-sex-before-marriage movement and continue to promote it in on a national scale. What a joke.
