My letter to them:
I frequently enjoy eating at McDonald's. I consider many of your food items to be much better than similar products at Burger King, Wendy's, White Castle, and Hardee's/Carl Jr's. However, today I read about your corporate decision to deny worker's comp to Nigel Haskett, an employee at one of your restaurants in Arkansas who bravely stepped in to protect a woman who was being beaten by one of your customers, and was shot for his trouble.
The cold-hearted indifference to this young man's injuries, incurred while on the job defending one of your customers (who could easily have been me, or one of my children) is utterly astonishing to me. I predict you are about to reap a whirlwind boycott unlike any you might have faced in the past, and I and my family will be part of that boycott. I hope the amount of business you lose over this stupid and inhumane business decision is far, far over and above the amount you would have paid out for Haskett's treatment. It is my intention to pass on the news of your abhorrent and heartless behavior to every single person I know.

1) McDonald's restaurants are independently owned franchises
2) It wasn't even the franchise owner, but the insurance company that denied the claim.
So how can McDonald's when they were three companies removed from the incident?

McDonald's are franchises, quite different from outright "ownership", not much different from glorified "managers" and McDonald's is also self-insured. If they were truly independently owned, they wouldn't be under the brand McDonald's--everything they buy for their business comes from McDonald's exclusively and cannot be deviated from. The company handling this claim just administers their "insurance."
txexspeedy

Not all McD's are franchises; and if that is a franchise and the owner's insurance is causing the Problem, I would say McD's would jump in and settle to pay the bills because they will lose millions on fixing bad press. McD's already spends millions on the Ronald McDonald House. This is Advertising Gold. What screw ups. "We train hereos at McD's, everyday all american heroes.

Because they were the ones who set up this multi-tiered system precisely to insulate themselves from their own practices. It's a lot like the Mafia, where the Don runs things, but has so insulated himself from what happens -- even though he ordered it -- that it can't be pinned on him.
This is precisely what's wrong with US corporate interests today. They can cause all kinds of shit, but insulate themselves from the results of their actions.
It's like the companies who hire drivers, put ridiculous time demands on them, but then claim that the drivers are "independent" contractors when one of them runs over someone trying to meet the crazy schedule.
It's depressing to see that you've bought into the corporate scheme to relieve themselves of any responsibility for their actions.

Another corp to totally boycott (from Ira Forman at HuffPo):
Today, I learned that CBS News named Jeff Ballabon, a New York Republican activist, to serve as the Senior Vice President of Communications.
What is CBS thinking? This guy is very far out there with his partisan rhetoric.
A decade ago, I debated Ballabon in New York. I represented the Democratic Jewish community while he spoke on behalf of Republican Jews. During the debate, Ballabon claimed that, after his most recent job in Washington, he became convinced that Democrats are inherently bad people and Republicans are fundamentally good people.
What planet does this guy come from? It's astonishing that CBS News would name Ballabon to its senior management.
In fact, it is not atypical of Ballabon to use this kind of extreme partisan rhetoric. During the 2008 election, Ballabon said, "Obama is incredibly dangerous."

Let's hit McDonald's in the only place these jerks understand, the pocketbook. As of today, I vow to not even consider going to any of their establishments on account of this.
This is exactly what is wrong with out society. These companies only thinking of their profits and letting even their own workers fend for themselves, both in medical bills and in general, fending for themselves without any security inside their restaurants.

I remember a similar situation that happened in the NYC subway system where a girl was getting raped and a worker made no attempt to help her for basically these same reasons. Although scorned by the public and the papers, both the transportation department and his union backed him up saying he did entirely the right thing. They don't want their employees doing risky things that might result in expensive insurance claims, even if it means praising your employees for standing by and doing nothing as a young women gets raped before your eyes.

I dropped the following to McDonald's via contact form at their web site.
Although I still stop by preference for breakfast at McDonalds when I need to grab breakfast not at home mornings, after reading the lastest news report on your corporations refusal to cover with worker's comp an employee shot while defending a patron, I have decided I will, to put it simply, eat at McDonald's again when Hell freezes over, but not before. What is wrong with you people? Yet another illustration of the worst, most unethical, immoral behavior by corporate America. Screw your customers, and screw your employees. First, foremost, and above all. I am so disgusted words (almost) fail me. Again, I WILL NOT EAT ANYTHING again at a McDonalds. (And I regret this, because your breakfast sandwiches are good, and superior to all the competition.)(That being said, your hamburgers really suck, I have not eaten on in a decade or more. Your prepartion is too much like boiling soft meat to a pulp, not cooking a hamburger.)
This letter is in regards to Nigel Haskett, your employee at the McDonald's in Little Rock, AK and the unconscionable decision to leave him to fend for himself in regards to compensation for injuries sustained in what everyone who witnessed this incident calls an act of heroism.
Much like the CEO's at the Congressional hearings a few weeks ago, it seems your insurance company Ramsey, Krug, Farrell and Lensing and in particular, it's representative Misty Thomson, fail to realize and and are slow to recognize the new reality. People are fed up and sick of this corporate culture that places more value on profit than on our shared humanity and doing the right thing. This country is sick of this attitude and frankly, I'm sick of this attitude that leaves your own employees and patrons to fend for themselves not just inside your restaurants but after they sustain injuries while in the course of their employment.
This really is penny wise and pound foolish because a groundswell is rising from this story and I myself (as well as my family) vow never to set foot inside one of your franchises ever again unless McDonalds as a corporation does right by this brave young man and reverses course from simply shrugging your shoulders and leaving him to twist in the wind alone.
Perhaps when the only language that it seems your corporation understands, profits, is affected, then maybe you'll actually stop and join the rest of us down here on planet Earth and come be a part of the community of human beings.

I received a response from McDonald's at 5:08 AM, CST, this morning, and it included a statement from the owner of the AR McDonald's:
February 24, 2009
My highest priority is the safety and security of my customers and employees.
I stand behind Nigel Haskett. I believe he acted as a Good Samaritan. Concerning the critical matter of his medical expenses, it is important to note that the Arkansas Worker's Compensation Commission ultimately decides the outcome of his claim. As part of this process, Nigel's case will be presented to a Worker's Compensation judge, who will review all of the facts and decide on the case's merits.
McDonald's supports Nigel's claim, and fully anticipates the judge in this process will find in Nigel's favor. As a safeguard, if for some reason his claim is denied, and other insurance options are unavailable, I intend to cover the cost of his medical expenses.
I'm doing this because it's the right thing to do for Nigel.

Why can't the employee just sue? Worker's Comp is given to employees so the corporation doesn't get sued for negligence. If he doesn't get any Worker's Comp then he isn't bound to that. This is going to be an interesting case to watch.
squid696

This is exactly right. McDonald's has opened themselves up to a lawsuit for negligence by denying this employee coverage under Workers Comp. Such a lawsuit would have been unavailable if McDonalds had agreed to the employee's claim for Workers Comp. Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face..
Talk about such unswerving devotion to both your employees and customers! Anyone going to Burger King tonight?

McDonald's cold hearted corporate response to the courage of this young man is so telling about the culture of corporations in this country in the aftermath of 8 years of Bush.
If any good can come from this tragic story it would be that hero's don't wait for corporations to tell them what is right.
Also, as a result of this young mans actions, I have redefined what the McDonald's logo now means to me. It used to represent a small, positive even welcome piece of American civilization on the horizon after hours and hours on the road for me and my family.
No more. Now the golden arches represent the over arching demise of civility. Needless to say, I will vote with my wallet. Someone should write a song about this.

No "ifs" about it. I won't step foot in another McDonalds, no matter how much my granddaughter fusses. No way. EVEN if they end up finally, after seeing the writing on the wall and being pulled kicking and screaming to end up doing the right thing.
There was a time in the US when there wouldn't have been a hesitation, the young man would have been called a Hero, the company (maybe milking it even a little) would have lauded him, paid his bills, and paid him comp. THAT would be the kind of society we deserve.
The only way I break my boycott, if they get ahold of the people that denied it, and let THEM go. They aren't about to do that, but decisions like these get made automatically, immorally, and shame on them.

As a former member of AFSCME (since retired), rest assured that I will spread the word of this egregious conduct by McDonald's throughout the labor movement! I have always boycotted McDonalds because I could not stomach the greasy burgers, which gave me indigestion, but I will now encourage fellow union workers to boycott them because of their failure to stand up for either their patrons or employees! When an employer fails to support an employee who is injured while protecting a patron from abuse on the employer's premises, that employer forfeits the loyalty of both his employees and patrons! The boycotts and adverse publicity, not to mention court judgments and punitive damages for acting in bad faith, will cost McDonalds far more than the $300,000 that they would have paid Nigel Haskett for his injuries while acting on McDonald's behalf! Ironically, McDonald's could have benefited from the goodwill which would have resulted from a loyal employee who came to the aid of a patron under attack, but short-sighted corporate greed foreclosed that possibility!
Amanda
Cut their losses? It's a $300,000 claim. Even for McDonald's this is a very large claim that affects their costs considerably for work comp in the future. They will end up paying though because the employers always end up paying in work comp. Nobody cries for McDonald's for all of the real and most especially fraudulent claims that they pay for in work comp on a daily basis. A lot of people think work comp is a retirement plan. It isn't. We all end up paying for it.

Beyond that, I'm quite impressed that I had a response from McDonald's Corporate PR in less than 24 hours. They're obviously on top of this.

Talk about such unswerving devotion to both your employees and customers! Anyone going to Burger King tonight?
If any good can come from this tragic story it would be that hero's don't wait for corporations to tell them
what is right.
Cue the McDonalds "feel good" TV campaign. Sorry, Ronald.
This time we are not buying it.
I can't figure out what they're doing. Didn't they see what happened when Walmart's tried to get that poor woman to repay them for medical benefits?
You won’t pay the medical expenses of YOUR employee who was ON THE JOB when he protected one of YOUR customers and got shot for his trouble? Are you people insane? Have you forgotten what happened to Wal-Mart a year or so ago when they sued one of their employees for medical expenses? See here: http://tinyurl.com/cjqs9u
How is it possible that you can get to sleep at night? How is it possible that you expect people to buy your products when you treat your own employees like this?
Pay Nigel Haskett’s medical bills!
We did it to Rick Santorum. We can do it to Misty Thompson.
No way. EVEN if they end up finally, after seeing the writing on the wall and being pulled kicking and screaming to
end up doing the right thing.
Well, if the robbers of America are paying any attention, they'll now know where to go to get their next payday.
This is SOOOOO easy to figure; MONEY is MORE important, than human life...
