and all generic/store brands.
Look for high quality animal proteins (which are more digestible for dogs than grain!!) Whole beef, chicken, turkey, lamb, fish, etc., but note that whole meats contain lots of water. Go for whole meat meals (meals are meat with the water removed).
Animal proteins should be at the top of the ingredient list. Carbs are okay, but not required. Grains are a problem, because they are basically just filler, hard to digest, and result in gas, smelly (and large) feces.
Solid Gold, Innova, Merrick, Natural Choice Ultra, Newman's Own Organics, Sojourner Farms, Wellness, and Wysong are reliable choices.
Vets are generally not trained at all in pet nutrition.
I've got a cocker pup myself - this "free dog" has cost me $500+ so far, just getting him cleaned up, rabies shots, neutered, ears cleaned up, and city dog license. Note also that cockers are notorious for ear infections, allergies popping up in the form of skin irritations (little bumps all over, e.g. between the toes), and really, really wanting to sleep on or next to you.
Best advice received yet - walk him for at least two square blocks, early, every single morning, to get the marking behavior over with.
That's certainly a special moment that Joe will remember forever.
Petey is clearly a lucky dog.
Condolences to Joe about Boomer's passing.
what a joy!
I loved the video....and the song !
Have fun Joe and Petey !!

Thank you for the positive, poetic energy.
You are a lovely man Joe!
what a fantastic video...Gwen the wonder pug watched with interest! thanks guys.
Joe, you rock.
They are an amazing breed and a sweet companion dog.
Thanks for sharing, guys.
Petey, congratulations on the new man in your life.
Joe and Petey, enjoy your days.
Bob
Petey is such a great name for him...
Don't worry about that. Rescue dogs can take some time to adjust. But with a good owner, they come around. Well, for the most part. My last rescue dog (Rusty), got over a lot of his problems. But whenever he saw a cop, he went crazy. He hated cops. But I guess I saw that as a feature. If Rusty was barking, you knew the cops were coming. So hide the pot.
Great dog!
Awwwwwwww......
He's really cute. I'm so glad you got another one, Joe. I'm like you in that when I lose a pet, I have to get another one. I think it's wonderful that pets allow us to truly experience the "one door closes and another opens" doctrine of life. There is no better way to pay tribute to one's love for a pet than to want to share it with another onel.
You couldn't ask for a better daddy!!
Petey is precious!!!
my husband and I (soon to be anyway, we live in Connecticut!) have the sweetest Cocker who came from Abandoned Angels in Queens, NY. She brings such joy and happiness that I cannot stay quiet! Miss Penny is a life force that defies description, much like Boomer must have been for Joe. Every day Penny reaches new heights of JOY and I cannot thank her rescuers enough for how lucky we are to have such a sweet girl in our lives. The fact that families are having to give up their family members due to the credit crisis is so hurtful.
Please help the rescue groups during this dificult time.
Petey looks like a sweetheart - I wish you both many years of loving affection. You just have to wonder why anyone would abandon such a loving pup to the pound. As much love as you give him you will receive tenfold in return. Lots of happiness to both of you
Congratulations on a great new dog. He reminds me so much of a Cocker my wife and I adopted about 12 years ago, Cody. Great dog, same beautiful face, same coloring, and same great disposition.
Enjoy. And love him. He'll always love you.
And thanks for this post.
I do enjoy things like this, between all of the politics...
Somehow, for me, to see real life like this, makes all of the politics all the more pertinent... In the end, it seems the goal of good politics is to make real life better for all...
And Petey is definitely going to have a better life!
Good on ya, Joe.
Petey, take good care of Joe. Boomer knows you can do it.
John, thanks for a great video for us to end the day with.
Boomer, rest assured....
He looks like a real sweetheart, and I'm sure he's going to love his new forever home. :)
Petey is the cutest thing on four legs. I loved seeing the Happy Tail. He looks like he knows he just hit the lotto.
I just love a dog story with a happy ending. Best to you both, Joe.
Typical manic Cocker- all nose and wagging tail.
You'll have much fun togeather
I hope he's a democrat!!!!!! LOL
congrats Joe!!!
let me say this from experience: Petey will
never detract from the fond memories of
Boomer but he will surely enrich your life
as only a good dog can.
good for you, Joe!! may your heart always
be filled with joy.
I have long believed that dogs are here to teach us how to love without conditions. The wagging tails say it all. This reminded me of another video out there, a homecoming:

It always makes me cry. :)
Congrats!!!!!
Unbelievable resemblance, though. I have to show this picture to her.
All I could see him thinking while checking out his new digs, is "OMGOMGOMG! Newsmellnewsmellnewsmell! New smell OMG over here new SMEEEEELLLLLLL!" Hehe.
We are planning to rescue a dog in the spring, probably an Italian Greyhound. They are very sweet, sensitive, loyal dogs. The only problem is living in New England and them not loving the cold so much heh, but that's why they make warm and comfy doggie sweaters. :-D
My Cinnamon (pit bull, boxer mix) is my joy and my heart and I beg everyone who looking for a new dog, PLEASE SAVE A LIFE AND ADOPT!!!
Best wishes from Decatur, Georgia, where we're working hard to add one more Democrat to the Senate.
Have fun!
california natural was my cocker's favorite food, and it made friends of other dogs on our walks.
sure am glad you found petey. i love his big cocker feet.
