We are fortunate that all we have to do is go out on our deck or in our driveway - even if it's reasonably clear (and it's usually really clear) we can see the Milky Way. Breathtaking. Last year my son and I watched the meteor shower from our deck. Not a ton, but a few were pretty spectacular. We like looking for sattlelites, too.
There are a few advantages to "living in the sticks" at a medium high altitude with dry air and not much vegetation. Great night sky viewing is one.
