AMERICAblog: Mitt wants us all to know that Palin is an accomplished debater

This is good for the Dems. This means Biden won't have to dummy-down his responses. The right has been wining and trying to change the debate format for a reason! Their candidate is weak: hands down.

Fine.
My only piece of advice to Biden, show no mercy. If they want to to say she's a good debater, then I say Biden should take the same tack as Obama did, be respectful, courteous, but be assertive and don't back down. That might be tough for Biden, who seems to be a bit of a hot-head, but if he pulls it off, dig a hole for McCain and crew because it's over.

I am sick and tire of the God Damned Republiscum. I am tired as we try to keep the debate civil only to be treated without respect. I am tired when we attempt to discuss the issue only to be slimed. I am tired when we use facts and they use lies. It is time for the Democrats to stand up and to destroy the enemy. When we take control of the government, treat the scum they way they have treated us. Make it clear that we will destroy them. We will hold them to public ridicule. We will use the law to persecute them until we see their leaders slowly twisting in the wind, dead a the en of a rope.

Absolutely agree. The lies and liars must be exposed and ridiculed publicly. All the time. It's the only way back from here...

I saw Mitt on the Today Show. Every time he had to say something nice about Sarah, he looked as if he had hemorrhoids.

now THAT would be a great SNL skit... do the VP debate, have Fey come out as Palin... late... and wearing a cheerleader outfit.

By all means dimwits, let everyone think she is a great debater.

How the hell can she win anything unless the questions are all centered on preparation of moose meat, hunting wolves from a helicopter, or the history of the earth. She is so not prepared to be a vice president. Cheerleader, yes. Soccer mom, conditional--your daughter does not get knocked up if you are a good soccer mom.
If I were a conservative republican, I would be so angry at the McCain campaign for this colossal pandering and lack of judgment.

Mittens has few smarts and no political credibility. I just don't understand how people like this can run companies like Bain capital...

Joe Biden just has to show he knows the issues inside and out AND isn't out of step with Obama's plans. I expect for his studying up he's been focusing on those areas where, during the primary (or during his interview with Couric) he and Obama were out of step. There aren't that many, or many that are substantive, so it's not that tough a job.
She probably does debate well on things she knows something about -- like, say, Alaska. But she's already shown that on the larger national questions, she's clueless. Basically, she's incurious (a true Bush disciple on that regard), so she's only bothered to learn about the things that will get her elected to the next rung of her career. Since she was thrown into the VP nominee slot so suddenly, I'm sure her head is exploding with details and policies. Given how McCain has flip-flopped so much over the past 8 eight years, I can't imagine that's easy for her to do. I can't imagine that's even all that easy for his own policy advisers at this point. Or for McCain himself.

I'd love for them to throw out a question to her on Superfund sites... and have her ramble on about Wall St. and the economy for a while.

Palin has lived all her life in the Mat-Su valley. She knows the populist slogans and issues in Alaska, a very low information electorate. She doesn't know jack about national or international issues.
the text along with this muzak is hilarious toward the end... fast forward so you don't have to listen to it though.

She's going to come out with both barrels.
Her arguments will be facile and occasionally illogical, but she'll be able to get away with that in a pseudo-debate format.
Biden will have to take the shots and direct all his fire toward McCain.
Soundboy_jeff_meanie

that's what I'd worry about... both barrels.
in chimpy's case, the lump in the back of his jacket was a wire... in palin's?

Someone in the Biden camp leaked the other day that The strategy was for Biden to just ignore her. Maybe that's a red herring. Maybe he'll pull the "McCain" line and keep saying: "What Sarah doesn't understand is...."

I guess Mittens is still wanting Palin's job. When McCain is forced to dump her, mittens will just slide right in!
Joe Biden doesn't deserve the bad rap he gets. He's a scholar and a gentleman, and he'll shine thursday night.

something about that statement, "mittens will just slide right in", is just SO wrong.
not the sentiment... the visual.

I want to hear the debate but I think I am going to have to fortify myself with something stronger than soda. I don't know how long I will be able to listen to someone with that, for lack of a better description, hillbilly accent. The accent plus the voice inflection are probably going to drive me crazy.
I am sure Tina Fey is "gonna" have a field day after this debate.
Busboy

Biden has a hillbilly accent? I thought he was from Delaware, home of the " corporate tax loophole"...
Soundboy_jeff_meanie

I thought that was DC?
Busboy

No, that's the home of the "corporate asshole"....
Zorba

She's from Idaho, and has, basically, an "Inland North" dialect (think "Minnesotan") shading a little bit into Pacific Northwest. "Hillbilly" is generally used to refer to either Southern Appalachian or Ozark dialects. But I agree, she's not easy to listen to, although for me, it's because of the content (which is vacuous), and not so much her accent. ;-)

When she is familiar with the facts, I think she is probably good at arguing and trying to please an audience. I doubt she is a good debater which requires a thorough understanding of both sides of an issue and the ability to plan at least two moves in advance and keep several alternate plans in mind. But it won't be a real debate anyway.
Soundboy_jeff_meanie

unless her interview with Couric was to throw people off... she ISN'T familiar with ANY facts.
as of two days ago anyway. she's gonna have one hell of a headache after the "Clockwork Orange" programming session takes place in preparation for Thursday.

Having served with John McCain in the Senate for so many years, Joe Biden probably knows McCain's positions on issues better than Sarah Palin. For every canned response that Palin gives on the "McCain-Palin" platform, Biden will be able to point out that McCain held a different position at some point in the past.
Biden should try to keep his responses clear and concise, and point out McCain's new found "epiphanies" whenever he can.

I don't mind them floating the idea that she's an accomplished debater. The worst thing for us right now is that the expectations are so low that if she can formulate a sentence that makes sense, she'll exceed expectations.
I'm pretty worried about this debate. Since she has looked so dopey in all of her TV interviews, the media will be wowed if she is able to regurgetate all of the prepared answers that her handlers have installed into her. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that she's going to be able to do that especially since these candidates can't even interact.
Notice how any news program that discusses this upcoming VP debate solely focuses the conversation on Sarah Palin. The only time they talk about Joe Biden is when they speculate his gaffe potential or him potentially coming across as sexist in some way.
This debate is all about Palin and if she comes prepared, all the discussion will be all about how wonderful she is. Even if Biden wins, it'll all still be about how good or bad Palin did for the next several news cycles.
Soundboy_jeff_meanie
still... wouldn't it be wonderful if she got flustered and referred to Biden as "Mr. Doodyhead"?
KarenMrsLloydRichards

The format favors her. It's more like a two person Q & A. There won't be much "clash" as a result.

do you think she knows now 'what a VP does'?
Happy_Housewife

I very much agree that we underestimate her at our own peril: They've set this debate up on their own terms, to make her appear intelligent and capable of leading. Even a mediocre performance will be spun as proof of her ability to lead.
I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but I really do think they will have some sort of electronic device on her, feeding her answers. Like they did with Bush.

Well, we all know what an expert debater Mittens is....after all, his stellar performance in primary debates landed him the Republican nomination - oops. . .I guess it didn't quite happen that way, did it?
