If you don't bend over and kiss the GOP arse they'll whine and cry and take their toys and go home.

With Harry Plead in the Senate and Obama throwing every progressive ideal out the window - looks like its going to be a long 4 years.

So--going for that 40% of Rethugs...give the petit bourgeoisie the bulk of the tax cuts simply so they can make more money and consume more? How retro.

This country needs JOBS, green ones that will actually discourage consumption and and shore up our infrastructure, not tax cuts for people making salaries in 6 figures. And does he really believe that those who run "small businesses" won't follow the lead of the corporations and simply pay themselves more and create no more jobs?

What kinds of incentives will there be to keep jobs in this country, to prod companies into paying better wages, providing benefits, etc? And what about the 30% of wage earners in this country making low wages? They will get nothing, or next to nothing, while those on fixed incomes will get absolutely nothing. Will those on unemployment benefits get another extension? We could easily hit 10% unemployment next year. How will Obama reverse the tide of theft that sent wealth from the bottom to the top?

Sounds to me like simply more "trickle down" on Main St. except not of the same great amounts as Wall St. Of course, in the end, the same people will pay for their own tax cuts at some point in time. Tax cuts are never what they appear to be, except for the very rich.

Now I am afraid. Mau-mau economics or voodoo economics or trickle-down economics, as far as I can understand it's all Ponzi Scheme. Thank Madoff and ask B'nai Brith how that worked out.

Oh! Did that sound angry? Well, good!
  • triple7s · 10 months ago
Oh no, TRICKLE-DOWN works so well, (if you are in banking or finance). NICE.

This is very disappointing. Don't they realize that the Dems. won the election.
To hell with bi-partisanship. This is not enough.

So what would be a "better" number to the whiners...I mean "progressives"? 5%, 10%, 15%? Bottom line, Obamas been talking about tax cuts for a while and I have to wonder if people on the lefts aversion to tax cuts is because it's been synonymous with GOP dogma. The truth is, I think the problem has never been tax cuts as much as it has been nothing else in concert with it to truly take advantage of more income in peoples pocket. If the other 60% of Obamas stimulus package is designed well, actually stimulates job creation and spending, then mission accomplished. To me, it seems pretty irresponsible to go out and spend a trillion dollars that you don't have. Sure tax cuts represent a loss in revenue for the government, but it also means less debt.

The other REALLY big issue is that timing is important. The GOP doesn't have the votes but they have also shown an almost pathological trait of being obstructionists till the end. If they decide to bog this bill down in committee/hearings/procedures for 4, 5, 6 months, tack whatever number you want on for tax cuts, we'll be in the middle of a depression at that point anyway!
  • Rasscot · 10 months ago
How about at least putting up a fight for the correct course of action.
Why do Dems. always give in to the GOP? Fight for your position-persuade the public.

I see Israel is dropping internationallly banned cluster bombs in populated areas in the Gaza. Oh, that's ok, it'll only be little Palestinian children that will be dying from the fragments of these bombs over the next serveral decades.

    Dana Perino speaks the TRUTH!!!!!!

When Dana was asked about Harry Plead's statement that Bush might go down into history as one of the worse pResidents (safe for Harry - I'll bet he even inflated his chest when he said it) Dana said "...oh, that's ok, no one takes Harry seriously anyway."

This sell out to the GOP means a truky Great Depression. We need that money so that the people, though its gov;t, can get the goods actually needed. $300b in tax cuts mean the $$ that does get spent goes to the wrong places that will not help us. We need green energy and mass transport and better health & education etc. This tax cut will destroy the economy!
  • Bush Bites · 10 months ago
    Krugman on the tax cuts.

(Basically, he tax cuts should be part of the package, but worries that this is too much, and says Obama won't get Repubs to sign on anyway.)

    Krugman:

....there’s a problem with a public-investment-only stimulus plan, namely timing. We need stimulus fast, and there’s a limited supply of “shovel-ready” projects that can be started soon enough to deliver an economic boost any time soon. You can bulk up stimulus through other forms of spending, mainly aid to Americans in distress — unemployment benefits, food stamps, etc.. And you can also provide aid to state and local governments so that they don’t have to cut spending — avoiding anti-stimulus is a fast way to achieve net stimulus. But everything I’ve heard says that even with all these things it’s hard to come up with enough spending to provide all the aid the economy needs in 2009.

What this says is that there’s a reasonable economic case for including a significant amount of tax cuts in the package, mainly in year one.

But the numbers being reported — 40 percent of the whole, two-year plan — sound high. And all the news reports say that the high tax-cut share is intended to assuage Republicans; what this presumably means is that this was the message the off-the-record Obamanauts were told to convey.

    And that’s bad news.

Sounds like Obama has depended on Robert Rubin, Ben Bernanke and Tim Geithner far too much, among others.
  • Bush Bites · 10 months ago
Personally, I was surprised by the 40 percent number, and thought it was too high also.

But he did promise significant tax cuts to working people and small businesses during the campaign, so we shouldn't be surprised.

I'm more interested in hearing about where the 60 percent of spending stimulus will go. Nobody seems to be talking about that.

well shit. going for the GOPer vote sucks. to a point it's ok, but not this much. Dear Mr. Obama, don't forget who got you here.

    and good morning!

STOP Obama from putting Anti-Gay, Anti-CHOICE, Anti-LABOR, Pro-Iraq war gov. Tim Kaine as head of DNC

"Tim KAINE Obama's pick for DNC head....oh hell NO
Anti-Choice, Anti Gay, Anti Union, Hawk on Iraq....you ain't making the DNC the RNC,,,,,ever
HRC, Move On, NGLTF, Lambda Legal, NARAL, NOW,,,,,stop this insanity....NOW!

""But wait -- there's even more bad news. Kaine ran a gay-baiting campaign for governor and is awful on GLBT issues. Not only does he oppose gay marriage (which, unfortunately most Democrats do), he opposes civil unions, too. He also supported an anti-gay marriage amendment to Virginia's constitution. And not only did he support the Iraq War, but he was super-hawkish about it as well. In addition, he supported a repeal of the estate tax, reneged on his promise to enact universal pre-K, has a poor record on energy and global warming issues and has said he "strongly" supports anti-union, "right to work" laws."

Why go for so many Republican votes? Clinton passed his first budget with NOT ONE SINGLE Republican vote.
