I tried to watch Georgie and Johnny Mack but every second sentence was Georgie give John the right answer or correcting what he had just said. Reminds me of my Aunt Mildred trying to convince Uncle Herb that Jello is a fruit and he should eat it. Uncle Herb's grasp on reality lacked any reality.

Tragedy in Knoxville and still a lot of confusion, even by the media, as to what Unitarian-Universalism is. NBC reports that the shooter had a problem with Christianity (UU's are not considered Christian), and it sounds like this will ultimately be determined to have been a hate crime against a liberal group.

i read something this morning at the nytimes that indicated the shooter had yelled something when he started shooting. the woman they quoted said it was hateful, but wouldn't repeat it.

About eight years ago, the Secretary of State in Texas, told the Unitarian Universalists that they would be losing their tax exempt status because she felt that they are not a REAL religion with a set of doctrine. It was appalling and eventually the whole thing fell out of the news. I wrote her a long letter about how I was forming the Church of Saint Priapus, a phallic worship religion, with a REAL set of doctrine garnered from ancient Greek writings...this is no joke...there really was such a religion. We had some lovely tomb art from that era with incredibly large phalluses in all sorts of fun renderings.
There was some debate as to whether Viagra tablets would be used as communion wafers.

Its even more complicated than that, given the congregational polity that the UUA holds...this particular congregation may have thought of itself as marginally Christian, but not all are. (King's Chapel in Boston among others is.) My UU husband happens to be a goddess-worshipping pagan (his description).

Obama has a nine point lead in the Gallup poll. At least his trip was a huge success, and it shows. John King on CNN said that the attacks and smears usually start in August and September, so this huge bounce Obama got, will most probably go down, when the naive and brainwashed buy into the lies. I still don't see the Obama camp disproving any of McPain's dirty ads accusing Obama of not having judgment etc. Why are they letting this pass?
Bostonian_Queer_in_Dallas

And isn't it so interesting that telephone polling data is probably way off base. I have not owned a landline in ten years. Anyone else? The only people who own landlines are usually over 70 or live in the middle of nowhere. Polling data is bullshit in 2008.
Indigo

I have a landline and get regular calls from Barbara Bush thanking me for my loyalty. The Obama people also phone as do the telemarketers who claim to be representing the Florida State Police and I even get an occasional click-buzz on the line while talking liberal politics with friends. We make a point of telling the illegal wiretapper that he should go tell his boss that we're absolutely against George W. Bush and his enablers. Landlines can be fun. Oh, polling! Yeah, I get polling. When I tell them I always vote straight Democrat, they tell me that my profile group is already filled, thanks for my time, good-bye. Yeah . . .

Indeed, why ARE they letting these attacks pass? Kerry sat back and look what happened. If Obama thinks staying above the fray will win votes, he is sorely mistaken, especially with the media love affair of McSame. Trying to get through the news on CNN this morning and Kieren Chetry says nothing to challenge the McSame rep, but when the Obam rep is on she argues with everyone he says. Sheesh!

Breakfast TV chitchat on 24/7 cable news: That bump in the Gallup Poll for Obama is just a one-day outlier; in any case, why can't he break 50%? Especially since "the media" love him so much? Aren't those people in West Virginia and central Pennsylvania, those honest, hard-working white blue-collar voters (the only constituency and region that matter) going to hate Obama for not visiting the wounded soldiers?

What would happen if NO ONE clicked on Maureen Dowd's column at the NY Times online? (I stopped months ago.) What would happen if NO BLOGGERS mentioned her existence, let alone commented on her scribblings? What would happen if EVERYONE with a subscription to the NY Times and who finds Dowd disgusting cancelled their subscription and cited her as the reason? The Times prints her garbage because it thinks she brings in money. Give them a contrary message and see what they do. And why stop with Dowd? How about shunning Kristol, Brooks, and Little Tommy Friedman too? I have long refused to read their crap as well. Life is too short, and I already know my enemies.

What does the week have in store? It's a rough week coming up with the potential for confrontation and the making of fresh enemies. Lunassagh, the first of the three harvest festivals will be on Friday, August 1, accompanied by a total eclipse of the sun. Intense. Anyone who needs new enemies, wants to start a fight that won't end soon, or is feeling generally quarrelsome will have a great week. Put peace on hold, this is not the time to lie about things like that.

I just read this Ben Stein quote from CNN:
"Mr. McCain is running the absolute most pathetic campaign I have ever seen in my whole life," Stein said in his unmistakable monotone delivery. "His campaign is just heartbreakingly pathetic. He is a very impressive guy. He is a brave guy, but he is running the most lackluster campaign I have ever seen in my entire life. I would have thought Bob Dole's campaign would have set a record for poor campaigns, but this one is even worse. I mean it is shocking."

How about Stein comparing Obama to Hitler for holding his convention speech at a stadium in Denver? Yep, that should work for the "pathetic" McCain campaign too, especially those Jewish voters down in Florida who might have voted for him.
ron071

Attntion Ben Stein fans: Why is McCain a " very impressive guy'? What in his history has been "impressive"? Was it his career at the Naval Academy? Was it his record as a Naval aviator? Was it that he was shot down, captured, and imprisoned? Was it his treatment of the women in his life? Was it his constant changing of positions to suit the Bush administration? Was it his selection of Phil Gramm as his chief economics adviser? Is it the campaign you call " pathetic"?
Tell us Mr. Ben Stein just why you call him " an impressive guy"? Please do.

That's probably true. Our former minister (now at the Rockville church) was the Sr Minister at TVUUC and they were very active as a welcoming congregation, with a good number of members from the GLBT community.

After watching the Morning shows my faith in the American media has been restored. I thought they might dwell on the McCain attacks on Obama, the growing hardships of Americans, the record deficit for 2008 ($500 billion), the increased violence in Baghdad, the bombings in India, the terrorist attacks in Turkey, Obama dissing the injured troops. No sireee, the main story this morning was that Donald Trump does not use hair gel, no he uses hair spray to control his combover. Holy Shit, AquaNet gets a nice morning plug, Trump knocks the news of the world off the tv and the talking heads can actually now talk about something they know---Hair Technology. They know the ins and outs of hair spray, what works in wet conditions, how much gel, when to lay off the hair spray, how to pooof your hair to give more volume, yes these are things Charlie Gibson, Matt Lauer (though with his skull showing through not so much) can relate to and besides The Donald is a successful guy, no one talks about his tax breaks, his multiple brushes with bankruptcy, his failed airline, and the fact that he was bankrupt in 1990 and then went chapter 11 in 1994, but it is all about the hair. I can now have my morning nap.

American terrorism attacks children in the name of homophobia
The events of this campaign indicate that the Republicans ought to oust McCain before his campaign ruins any last chance for a Republican victory. He is making a fool of himself every day. How does this add up to any chance of victory? Pathetic is the best way to describe McBush, 2008.

My former minister was the minister at the Knoxville church. She had indicated that there were members from the gay and transgendered community who were active in the church when she left in 1999. According to Pam's blog, the church had just put up a sign as a welcoming congregation. There will be a prayer vigil tonight at the Rockville UU Church if you are in the area and want to attend (7:30 pm)
