AMERICAblog: Money for nothing - the bonus fiasco

  • Indigo · 1 year ago
Have you heard the one about the faux-liberal who campaigned for change and then hired the architect of the anti-gay pogrom to give the invocation at his inauguration?
He's acting like the first four-year lame duck in history!
  • lucky hussein · 1 year ago
ok - how much bailout money did merrill get? how much is going to these bonuses directly? how much is going to the bonuses indirectly by keeping the company afloat after it gave all it's money away in bonuses? do we get access to these numbers ever? are these questions unfair? help!

anyone in favor of nationalizing wall street? I think i might be...
  • devlzadvocate · 1 year ago
kinda OT - Tomorrow Chrysler closes all plants for one month; Ford for one extra week; GM closes 30 plants over three months. The buzz here is that Chrysler may not re-open. So, the beginning of the end? The impacts will be felt soon of all these closings.

The Bushoover White House still drags its feet. Did Paulson spend all of the first $350 billion traunch of the TARP (should it be TRAP? CRAP?)?

Is there nothing left to give the auto companies and that's why they can't come out with a plan and claim to be thinking CREATIVELY?

We have been screwed all the way around, paid for it and didn't get kissed.
  • Older_Wiser · 1 year ago
Funny you bring that up. Earlier on MSNBC, there was a piece where a dolt from American Enterprise Institute was remarking to Bush that the Big 3 probably thought they would get a better deal from Bush, who replied, "I haven't made up my mind yet." He may throw a few million more people out of work...
  • BostonJoe · 1 year ago
It isn't Bush who stopped the auto bailout. It was the Senate Dems!
Kennedy is just to sick to vote. Obama resigned. Kerry and Biden didn't bother to show! Shame on them!

Not OT at all. Fuckin' Wall Street thieves should get the same bonus as the auto industry - Fuckin' Nuthin. How often and how hard do the American people need to be screwed in the ear before they take to the streets. Wall Streets not your friend, conservatives aren't your friend, Rethugs aren't your friend, the President's not your friend, the President-elect's not your friend, everyone in Congress is not your friend. The 1%'ers have just completed the theft of everything that the other 99% of hard working Americans have earned for the past century. And how dare we ask for more, we ungrateful riff-raff. Fuck nationalize, burn em down.

Again, why doesn't somebody propose that companies accepting "bailout" money be forced to accept the GS compensation schedule?

    .
It's too late to nationalize Wall Street. Wall Street has all ready "monetized" the nation. It's called reverse socialism. And you voted for it. Again.

But I'm just talking to the wall, I guess. It's my right, I guess. Maybe my only right.

OBAMA TEAM TO INCLUDE KLANSMEN AT INAUGURATION
    by Scarlet O'Butler - NYT 18 Dec 2008

In a surprising move, surrounded by much secrecy, Sen. Diane Feinstein [D-Ca] (who is in charge of a $1.24 million budget for the 56th quadrennial presidential inauguration) announced today that President-elect Obama would host the Grand Wizard of the KKK at the inauguration.

When asked about the mixed messages such a gesture might send, the Senior Senator said "it's sends a message of inclusion that even the dimmest bulb will understand" she went on to say "we want to reach out to all the cracks and crevices in America, even if means looking under slimy rocks". While the Senior Senator distanced herself from the outreach search committee due to her aversion to manual labor, she did offer up "that whatever the search committee found, ought to be included".

When asked what Obama and a head Klansman might do together, she offered that while the two originally planned to drink beer and shoot some hoops, the plan was changed when the Wizard complained that being seen on a basketball court might send the "wrong" message to the KKK members. Instead, the two will sit around and practice knots and finish with a bonfire specifically built by the Grand wizard for the ceremony.

While this meeting might seem alienating to one of President-elect Obama's biggest support groups, it is thought that the political jujitsu of this move should leave Gays who complained about the President-elect including a Preacher who insults gays and wants to deny equal rights...absolutely speechless. So far, the Washington consensus seems to support view, "this as a very clever move that should be seen as "real change" by the American public" a well respected Washington insider close to the administration was quoted as saying.

Also appearing by special invitation to the presidential inauguration will be the Hell's Angels from California, along with assorted Somali Warlords and representatives of the Sudanese Government. For the record Sen. Diane Feinstein [D-Ca] was asked if she had personally extended a warm welcome to the Brown Shirt Organization of Greater America, but she declined comment specifically on that saying that "it's a real mixed bag" and "including everybody, regardless of their background had left a lot on her plate...and she wasn't sure if it would come clean in time for the big event"

Ed. note, special thanks to Washington freelance writer John Aravosis who provided background for this story.

It seems to me that this is a massive theft scheme and all these Wall Streeters are guilty of racketeering. Really, the mob has nothing on these guys when it comes to RICO violations. You have a huge conspiracy to sell worthless securities with the sole purpose of generating "profits" which are totally illusory, so the execs can skim all the cash before everybody discovers the securities are worthless. I mean, what legitimate business generates $7 billion in revenue and hands out $6 billion in compensation? 85% of revenue for compensation ? The other 15% must have been for business expenses like retreats at luxury resorts and corporate jets. But, a few years later, they write down over $20 billion in losses? Nice accounting. All these people should be prosecuted under RICO. This wasn't just a soured investment, it was all a scam.

No, no, no!! It is not acceptable to arbitrarily award taxpayer money to ANYONE! We don't accept bonuses as an approved form of compensation. Whatever was agreed by the corporations is out the window now, if taxpayer money is involved. Approved salaries only!
  • TomJoad · 1 year ago
It's simple really. The basis for bonuses creates a target that the recipient will do ANYTHING to achieve, whether in the long term it is tenable or not. So they cheat, cook numbers, etc.

A while back in some Texas town I think it was the state pollce, or Rangers but some police organization had pretty much arrested every black in the town for distributing drugs, and 99.9% of the convictions and evidence was bogus, they hadn't done it. The problem there was the officers also got rated by how many convictions they got from cases, so...they picked on the poorest and just made it up....

Bonuses ought to be not just some "number" (and they even AREN'T currently, we hear of plenty of CEO's getting golden parachutes, bonuses while their company goes down the toilet.

    THIS IS SICk!

My husband is getting laid off this week (thankfully, he's amazing enough to already have another offer), but he is someone who really deserves such a bonus. As an engineer,
he actually makes things, the calculations, the real hard work in the manufacturing sector. He doesn't just steal someone's money!! NO CEO deserves obscene bonus or any bonus, for that matter, when their company is subject to taxpayers' bailout money!!! Are you kidding? This abuse of the taxpayer is how revolutions got started and won!!!
