Republicans see troops as a burden when there isn't a photo op but get "pro military" billing from the media

Typical Republican fuck-overs to the troops they "support".

Political diagnosis is every bit as dangerous as insurance-company diagnosis and every bit as misleading. I am alarmed that this is happening in a country where there are still people who claim that we have the best medical care in the world.
That's as ignorant as the Spaniards in 1898 who imagined that Spain was the most powerful empire in the world. The loss of the Phillipines, Cuba and Puerto Rico at the end of the Spanish-American War (guerra del Caribe) of 1898 woke up the Spanish public. I hesitate to visualize what it's going to take to wake up the American public.

To hell with tying it to chimpy's neck, tie it to McCain's neck! Make it known that he (McCain) doesn't back the bill either.

true... but if its tied to chimpy... it'll BE tied to mccain.
everyone is going to ask him about failed bush policy in the coming months, and he's too stupid to realize that people are SICK of failed bush policy. he's still supporting them on the campaign trail!!
given chimpy's 20-something approval rating, mccain is NOT going to be the next president.

NPR had a good story today about a woman's husband who returned from his 2nd tour in Iraq with PTSD and how she fought the Army to get him diagnosed and treated. She even had to take him to the base in a wheelchair because as she found out later, he was suffering from deep depression with catatonic symptoms--couldn't stand, feed himself or anything--and he was still made to report for duty. After some treatment, he's back at home, but she said he's still far from whole--she'd take 30 or 40% recovery at the least, and he's still receiving treatment from the VA.
I'm sure there are thousands of these stories and they don't all end like theirs, with a modicum of hope.

The shock at this story is what amazes me, but then I worked as a case manager / nurse for home hospice patients, many of whom were vets. The care our vets receive is beyond deplorable. And, yes, A.J. there is a huge difference in cost of care between those two diagnoses for too many reasons to count. First and foremost, adjustment disorder and treatment for them are time limited, expected to get better with full or near full resolution. Not true for P.T.S.D. and in fact, the mechanism behind that diagnosis is still the 'experts' best guess. We know it relates to the amygdala and there are many theories about what exactly happens, but there is NO cure - it's a matter of proper treatment, longer term therapy to make sure clients have the necessary tools to cope with that disability throughout the remainder of their lives, and emergent / acute care when some stressor causes an exacerbation. Meds for P.T.S.D are expensive, and a lot of times there's a long process to figure out which med works for each individual. The V.A. doesn't work like that, it has it's formualry of approved meds - period. Adjustment disorders can be treated with cheaper meds for significantly shorter periods of time, maybe even no meds.
The really bad thing is that this memo encourages the bandaid on a festering wound approach. A patient with P.T.S.D. untreated will get worse, and ultimately cost more money in longer term treatment due to cycling and increased frequency of exacerbations. It hurts the vets most, but also their families, the health care system, and the economy.
People should ask themselves, if the V.A offers nurses, even new nurses, 30 days paid vacation and a butt load of other benefits they can't get elsewhere, why is it nurses refuse to work there anyway? We run kicking and screaming in the other direction. Some of us try, and I swear we end up with P.T.S. D. ourselves - just how bad it is cannot be described. I've visited and cared for patients who had maggots living in wounds b/c they'd rather die at home then deal with a VA hospital. That, in itself, speaks volumes. And the MSM, they're never going to cover it. Never. Unless we get someone in there who'll force this discussion out into the public eye.
