Damn! I wish I could be that articulate and intense!
  • Butch1 · 9 months ago
I, too, without spittle running down my chin in the process. ;-)

Damm I can barely stomach Joe Scarborough - but once he has Pat Buchanon on/and open his FAT GOP mouth - I HAVE TOO CHANGE THE CHANEL!

    Computer savy people use AOL????

I don't get it....how many computer savy people do you know ould be caught dead with AOL???
  • greenleegazette · 9 months ago
We exist. I learned on BBSes and Prodigy, and went to AOL when Prodigy died. I like the interface. Of course, I use IE and FireFox and Chrome too, but I still use AOL. So sue me! :)

I also drink Mountain Dew, even though I'm not a gearhead or an Appalachian! Well, Diet Dew, anyway. . . Still, AOL is an odd part of Time-Warner to pull out of the pack to boycott.
  • moreleesafer · 9 months ago
I still use it. The interface is easy to use and I like the parental controls. Very easy to keep my son away from the nasty stuff. At work I use IE7.
  • sullivan · 9 months ago
I hope they do it! It is a great show and full of wonderful character actors and certainly would increase viewer ship. The Mormon Church is such a creepy religion.....right up there with Catholicism. I can say this as an ex abused Catholic youth and ex seminarian.
  • scooter in brooklyn · 9 months ago
some mormon somewhere must have done something REALLY bad to lawrence o'donnell (who i like alot). big love is one of the bes things on television. i'm looking forward to the next episode.
  • mtiffany · 9 months ago
I think this was also the last episode of the McLaughlin Group on which Mr. O'Donnell appeared. Oh my oh my, I do wonder why.
  • Butch1 · 9 months ago
O'Donnell won't let McLaughlin bully him like he does other guests. McLaughlin is used to talking over them and interrupting them like Chris Matthews does on his show, but Lawrence will not let him bluster over him. All he does is raise his voice a wee bit louder and McLaughlin recognizes he isn't going to win. Did you hear him ask O'Donnell if he was a Christian? O'Donnell ignored him and went to the point of his argument, and McLaughlin is not used to being dismissed in that way. His character may be too strong for those blowhards and O'Donnell always seems prepared for any question asked of him. He scares them with the truth.

AOL still has enough subscribers that there could be "hundreds of thousands" of Mormons among them? Seriously? I don't believe it!
  • LLDEM · 9 months ago
But AOL's service is free. How would this be a hardship? Less
    Mormons clogging the servers?
  • Personal Failure · 9 months ago
I wish i could get 14 million people to tithe 10% to me. Unless you'd like to start the tithing?
  • BarbaraGordon · 9 months ago
    Does anyone still use AOL?
  • Older_Wiser · 9 months ago
I found somewhere on a Mormon site (sorry, forget where I found it) that there are actually now more Mormons outside the US than inside. You know they love to brag about their "missionaries." Could it be that Americans know enough about this cult that they don't want any part of it and they have to go abroad now to recruit?

And I noticed at the bottom of your link, John, that they have a "style guide" for people sending emails; and you'd damned well better be a Mormon, too! : ). Style guide, indeed.
  • John Aravosis · 9 months ago
    LOL I totally missed that!
  • eclecticbrotha · 9 months ago
O'Donnell is right. Mormons used to believe that black people were cursed with dark skin as punishment for not taking sides in the war between God and the Devil. Loose paraphrase. I just find it surprising that O'Donnell went there on a Beltway bubblehead's show. Good for him.
  • nicho · 9 months ago
Actually, they believed that the fight was between Jesus and his brother Lucifer, who were both sons of Elohim -- who was one of many gods. The Mormons are polytheistic, which immediately excludes them from being Christian.
  • Rob Mule · 9 months ago
Yup...I too change the channel whenever Bat Puchanan opens his Nazi yap.
  • Nick · 9 months ago
I love the fact that the newsletter mentions a style guide. Please use the full name not LDS. LDS sounds too much like a bad drug.
  • cole3244 · 9 months ago
lawrence o'donnell is a fine political analyst along with david gergen, he was wrong on one point here though, buchanan is a bigot to be sure, and that is the nicest thing i can think of to say about the rw gop mouthpiece that is so beloved by the media that they foist him and his fascist opinions on their viewers, if he is an example of common sense then the media is even further to the right then even i realized.
  • John Aravosis · 9 months ago
Yeah, I kind of laughed when Buchanan said his great grandfather owned slaves, so did they make him a bigot? You sure you don't want to withdraw the question, Pat?
  • Steve_in_CNJ · 9 months ago
his point was that it doesn't make him a bigot, because it used to be constitutional. it's not a bad analogy. we should be able to admire the wisdom of our founders even though they were wrong on slavery.

i know it's good strategy to humiliate the opponent with their past mistakes, but in a fair fight, you have to stick to their current beliefs.
  • DavidinPS · 9 months ago
Yeah, but if slavery had been abolished twenty years, ago during Pat's lifetime, and he had been a member of and org that supported it, the analogy would hold better.

Mittens is a member--and priest in--a religion that was overtly and unapologetically racist--in the recent past. How current do the beliefs have to be?
  • jixter · 9 months ago
Wait! I'm confused! I thought that Pat was Irish and a hard-core Roman Catholic? How did his peeps end up owning slaves? How many more things are there that I think that I know but don't? Please somebody; help me out here.

Not too many savvy spinners or PR people emerging from this monolith....
  • bob915 · 9 months ago
...............way back awhile, when my oldest was 4ish and I was 81/2 months along with my second, a couple of young Mormons came to my door to try to save me and mine. Firstly, they had to vivibly recoup their wits when they first saw my oldest (they realized he was biracial). Then they subsequently had to give it up when they asked my oldest if he knew any bible verses........without as much as a blink he spouted off most of the Beatitudes, all the while spnning the wheel of his Matchbox car in his hand. I gave them each a leg of fried chicken and sent them on their way.
  • moreleesafer · 9 months ago
Well, that was might neighborly of you to give them some FRIED CHICKEN! That is funny. I would have also given them a slice of watermelon and some red kool aid to wash it all down.

I went to Jr. High with some Mormon kids in the 80's and they still seriously believed the black devil teaching despite what the church said publicly. They really wanted to save my soul.

How exactly does a boycott of a free service work?
  • woodroad34 · 9 months ago
It's not a totally free service. You can get your email free on AOL; but it does come with extras that I'm still paying for them. Don't ask why....
  • Ruthless Gravity · 9 months ago
They're just putting the hate on gays to help Mitt's chances with the fundie vote in 2012.
  • Asterix · 9 months ago
I really liked that South Park episode. One of the better ones.

Did SP ever take on Scientology?
  • nicho · 9 months ago
Well, they did have the episode where Tom Cruise was hiding in the closet and wouldn't come out and everyone kept shouting "Tom Cruise -- come out of the closet."
  • Asterix · 9 months ago
Looked it up--"Trapped in the Closet", season 9, episode 12.

"You see, Stan, there is a reason for people feeling sad and depressed. An alien reason. It all began 75 million years ago. Back then there was a galactic federation of planets which was ruled over by the evil Lord Xenu. Xenu thought his galaxy was overpopulated, and so he rounded up countless aliens from all different planets, and then had those aliens frozen. The frozen alien bodies were loaded onto Xenu's galactic cruisers, which looked like DC-8s, except with rocket engines. The cruisers then took the frozen alien bodies to our planet, Earth, and dumped them into the volcanoes of Hawaii. The aliens were no longer frozen, they were dead. The souls of those aliens, however, lived on, and all floated up towards the sky. But the evil Lord Xenu had prepared for this. Xenu didn't want their souls to return! And so he built giant soul-catchers in the sky! The souls were taken to a huge soul brain-washing facility, which Xenu had also built on Earth. There the souls were forced to watch days of brainwashing material which tricked them into believing a false reality. Xenu then released the alien souls, which roamed the earth aimlessly in a fog of confusion. At the dawn of man, the souls finally found bodies which they could grab onto. They attached themselves to all mankind, which still to this day causes all our fears, our confusions, and our problems. L. Ron Hubbard did an amazing thing telling the world this incredible truth. Now all we're asking you to do is pick up where he left off."
  • ndtovent · 9 months ago
The complicity of the mainstream mormon church in the polygamous practices of the 'rogue' mormon church leaves it open to any/all forms of criticism. The hypocrisy just amazing.
  • Joneses · 9 months ago
It took them over two years? I mean this show has been on HBO for I believe over two years. Never watched it nor do I want to since it's not my cup of tea.
  • nicho · 9 months ago
If Mormons drop AOL, where will they find their porn?
  • frank · 9 months ago
porn is their lifestyle, they don't need Aol
  • RitornaVincitor · 9 months ago
I don't blame the Mormons one bit for freaking out. Big Love is one of the best shows on HBO, and it makes the Mormons look even worse than they make themselves look, and that is really BAD. Needless to say, it is one of our favorite shows. Thank you, Mormons, for giving Big Love some additional publicity.
  • woodroad34 · 9 months ago
Most commenters on AOL are a hateful lot and their quickie polls add to it. Where will they go without AOL?
  • moreleesafer · 9 months ago
yeah, i have noticed that too. Every once in a while, I will click on a home page news story if it catches my eye. The comments at the bottom are always from wingnuts. ugh!

Where will they go? um, netzero?
  • hallam · 9 months ago
If they get offended at an HBO documentary its time to do the job properly.

Sounds like the perfect set for a porno movie to me.

What would cause most offense, straight or gay?
  • woodroad34 · 9 months ago
After Tom Hanks' comment about the hateful people who voted for Prop 8, he quickly pulled back his comment probably after realizing his show is about Mormons. I wonder how long it would be before the magic undie people would become displeased.
  • D. Davis · 9 months ago
"They're NOT suggesting that anyone organize a massive boycott that would "certainly... have an economic impact on" AOL."

My, my, how Bill O'Reilly-esque (recall his supposed "non-boycott boycott "of Pepsi because of Ludacris) of the Mormons.

Rather comical that they are upset over the "false images" and "stereotyping" of Mormons in "Big Love" (especially in light of the lies and stereotyping their members have put out there about the gay community and gay marriage). I wouldn't be surprised that all the publicity will only serve to make the "Big Love" even more popular.
  • David · 9 months ago
I never knew about that O'Donnell clip either until I read their press release. Thanks Mormons!! I'll be forwarding this to all my friends.
  • ChicagoKid · 9 months ago
I heard that Mormon dig AOL cause they offer a discounted "friends & multiple wives" membership kinda like Verizon' "fav five" promotion. You can get separate accounts for up to five wives and 23 children...as long as they aren't "colored"(their word, not mine).

    Dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb.

Why would an African-american ever want to play football or any sport for that matter, for BYU? Because the church is now, recently-non-racist?!

No wonder the church want to impregnate the girl @ about 15 years of age, if they got too much learn'n they might think of getting the hell outta Dodge.
  • Heather · 9 months ago
Until today I had never heard of Big Love but thanks to the protest I found it on my DVR and set to record the whole series. Something tells me Mormon outrage is good for HBO :-)
  • caphillprof · 9 months ago
Actually, BIG LOVE is very very good and in an odd way the series seems to be an argument in favor of gay marriage.
  • lilybart · 9 months ago
Guess what? People have been boycotting AOL for years now! It is a shell of its former self and no one cool uses it and today they laid off half the company.

    So, good choice for boycott!!
  • David · 9 months ago
I'm boycotting Western Telegraph. It will be about as effective as this one.
  • moreleesafer · 9 months ago
The line forms to the right. Next to the one for boycotting Stage Coaches and the Pony Express
  • Butch1 · 9 months ago
Nothing like two Irish guys having a nice discussion. ( I'm Irish so, I'm not pointing any fingers ) Interesting how passionate O'Donnell is about this subject, I wonder if Willard pushed his buttons at some time in his career.
  • Rob · 9 months ago
Are they just now becoming aware of this show?
  • Desert Rat · 9 months ago
Wait a minute. People still use AOL? Really? Who knew?
  • devis1 · 9 months ago
Big Love is the best show on TV now. I nearly died of shock when it was revealed last week that the rival prophet's wife was a cross dresser. I'm pretty sure they never showed "her" in a dress B4 and she was not real happy--getting a pitchfork in the leg from hubby's newest intended really ruined her day tho.
  • moreleesafer · 9 months ago
love IT! that reminds me to go save season 3 in my Netflix queue.
  • annette · 9 months ago
I wish all Mormons would boycott living.

P.S, Big Love is far and away the best show on television.
  • maudgonne · 9 months ago
Repeated Chinese campaigns have driven prices ever higher. The state-owned arms maker China Poly Group acquired three heads for about $4 million in 2000, and Stanley Ho, the Macau gambling magnate, paid less than $1 million for one head in 2003. But in 2007 he had to part with $8.9 million for another, and the two heads auctioned this year each went for twice as much again. The Chinese authorities have only themselves to blame for this inflation, not least since the heads have very little aesthetic merit. It's the history of their theft and China's determination to acquire them that add value. China also refused, last year, to buy the heads in a private sale for only $10 million each -- a move that now looks foolish.

I've always thought of the US as primarily a Protestant nation, but new surveys have shown that the country is now 53% Catholic, that largely due to immigrants. The survey showed that the erosion of all mainstream Christian religions continues. Church attendance continues to drop. People are looking elsewhere for their religious kicks. Mormons are just 1% of the country, by the way. Nice to know they get to determine if gays can marry, even though gays far outnumber them.
  • Toastie · 9 months ago
What, are they going to switch to Prodigy?
  • Chino_Blanco · 9 months ago
If you've got 0:15 to spare, Tom Hanks was downright prophetic at the Big Love 3rd season premiere:

wow.......... i think a t.v show like this is ridiculous......... i don't think HBO should spread secrets that aren't theirs..........i only understand little of it since i am only 13 but i think HBO shouldn't be producing an episode about the Mormon endowment ceremony........ it's wrong.......i want to start a protest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
