AMERICAblog: Networks are stymied over how to cover election night, since many are expecting McCain to lose early

• skeptic · 1 year ago
I want to pass on a funny comment on NPR. They were asking a panel what they thought an October surprise would be. One of the panelist suggested that Sarah Palin would shoot and field dress the same lawyer that Chaney had shot in the face.

"It's a crappy time to be a Republican in America." Indeed.
• kirkaracha · 1 year ago
Thanks to the Republicans, the last eight years have been a crappy time to be American.
• Verchiel · 1 year ago
If we ever listen to our guy, listen to him now:
------------------------------------------

He warned supporters not to get overconfident because he leads in the polls.

"Don't underestimate the capacity of Democrats to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Don't underestimate our ability to screw it up," Obama said. "I want everybody running scared."

Lord knows I want Obama to win...nobody wants him as much as I do but let's not jinx it with making too many statements about McCain already "losing." If you lived in the little town I am in, you should see all the McCain/Palin signs. Makes me sick. Indeed, I live in the WRONG STATE!! (FL)

This is all like a huge glass of ice water after an eight year trek through a desert wasteland. Like Loverboy says, "Lovin' Every Minute Of It"!!

Across America? Across THE WORLD!

The World's LARGEST CELEBRATION EVER will take place WORLDWIDE the moment they declare Obama the victor!

I know that here in DC it will be one GIGANTIC street party all across the city!

The republicans control the voting machines.

Polls mean nothing. Remember the Kerry exit polls on election night???
• Dianne_in_DC · 1 year ago
Yeah, Kerry won. Your point being?
• Chris From Maine · 1 year ago
and yet George Bush was sworn in for the second straight time.

And thats my point. The loser has been sworn in for the last 2 elections. WE CANNOT BE COMPLACENT.
• lucky hussein · 1 year ago
I have a great idea for them: once it's over they can start covering all the legitimate stories they stayed away from that would have had a influence on the election. Like:

1. Palin's witch-doctor and jew-hating pastors
2. Palin's membership in alaska independence politics, speeches, etc
3. falwell's, graham's, hagee's condemnation of americans for 9/11 - and hagee support of McSame
4. McSame's breaking election laws on funding limits
etc.. etc... etc...

Well, I expect Vermont's 3 votes to be the first ones called for Obama, and then I plan to sit back and watch all night as that map turns the most beautiful shade of blue.
• dances_with_beagles · 1 year ago
If the election turns into a rout, I will be up all night watching Fox News. It will be the most hilarious television production ever shown.
• Coming Undone · 1 year ago
If Obama wins the country will have a collective cry of joy, if McCain wins the country will weep in sorrow.

We still have to push the get out and vote message, this election is to important for us to assume that everything will be okay because McCain in down in the polls, voters have to be reminded of 2000 and 2004 .
• scottinsf · 1 year ago
I'm not so sure of your predictions.

If Obama is elected president and yet proposition 8 passes in California I'm going to have to temper my rage. I won't weep over anything but I know I'll probably get a little teary eyed when I drop off my ballot Nov 4.

We need your help here folks. It is more than just electing the best person to lead us through this mess. Prop 8 is going to pass unless we step it up.
• Coming Undone · 1 year ago
I totally understand what you're saying I still can't understand how same sex marriage threatens the marriage between a man and a woman, there are a lot of things that can threaten a marriage but same sex couples is not one of them and Proposition 8 needs to be defeated
• Kansaskitty · 1 year ago
All the Acorn crap is all about setting the groundwork for delegitimizing a victory for Obama so they can spend the next 4 years trying to undermine him. I already got a message on a family website from a McCain supporter that Obama was going to steal the election with Acorn's help. That was several days ago. The administrator since banned political talk till after the election as things were getting heated between the cousins!

Of course, the Repubs spent 8 years trying to delegitimize Bill Clinton as we all remember, and then Al Gore and John Kerry in 2000 & 2004. Fascist bastards.
• eliot99 · 1 year ago
I'm not counting on anything until it's over. In fact, maybe I'm being overly paranoid, but I'm not comfortable with the way things have gone the last couple days. For example, Research 2000 shows yesterday's (10/16) poll to be Obama by 6. That's a far cry from the 12 we were enjoying. I hope it's just me.

from politico story:

Network political experts do not expect a candidate to reach the winning threshold of 270 electoral votes before 11 p.m. Eastern. “Nearly a mathematical impossibility,” one network official e-mailed.

Not true at all. It's possible that the following Obama-leaning states will have been called by shortly after 10 EST: CO, CT, DE, DC, FL, IL, IA, ME, MD, MA, MI, MN, MO, NV, NH, NJ, NM, NY, NC, OH, PA, RI, VT, VA, WI -- that makes 287 total. The big, possibly close states -- OH and FL -- will have been totaling most of their votes for at least 2.5 hours. With enough of a spread, they will have called those easily by 10 EST. And don't forget the possible surprises of the purplish IN and WV.

"Nearly a mathematical impossibility" of reaching 270 by 10 EST is just plain incorrect.

No matter what happens, I will be drunk on my ass by the time the election is called. That way, if Obama wins I'll be in a celebratory mood and if McPappy wins my sorrows will be well on the way to drowned.

Anyone else have a knot in their stomach that gets bigger the closer we get to November 4?
• jebauer · 1 year ago
I've been a wreck for 6 months now....
• jebauer · 1 year ago
I agree Kansaskitty...

the Republicans would LOVE to use anything, no matter how petty, against the Dems in the event of a close electoral win. An article this morning said the FBI probably won't release ACORN findings until after the elections. I guarantee the Republicans are mining for ways to overturn a close election. WE NEED A LANDSLIDE to ensure there's no BS in the event of an Obama win. I'm signing up to call voters this weekend... GET INVOLVED... you can call battleground voters through obamaforamerica.com from the comfort of your own home.... there's no reason for ANYONE to be sitting back waiting for victory.
• FunMe · 1 year ago
Isn't it sad, that now we have to say this:

"if anyone can steal an election after we've won it, it's the Republicans."

We CANNOT let this happen for a 3rd time.
NOT THIS TIME.
• FunMe · 1 year ago
One more thing, if you can help the OBAMA/BIDEN Campaign this weekend, please do. Even if you are in safe state like I am in California, there are a lot of opportunities to help "swing states"

Find an event near you:
http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/calastcall2

I certainly will be helping out with NEVEDA to help them turn blue!
• lynne · 1 year ago
Heh. Even in a crappy place to be a Republican, it's a crappy time to be a Republican.
• eclecticbrotha · 1 year ago
The GOP and their corporate media shills are playing the expectations game. They are trying to create the air of inevitability around Obama in hopes of making his supporters complacent and maybe even convincing enough of them to stay home on election day thinking its already in the bag.
