McCain's own words from just three years ago. In a June 2005 appearance on Meet The Press, the Senator told moderator Tim Russert that, far from being at odds with the White House, he had "been totally in agreement and support of President Bush" on "the transcendent issues."

RUSSERT: The fact is you are different than George Bush.
SEN. McCAIN: No. No. I-the fact is that I'm different but the fact is that I have agreed with President Bush far more than I have disagreed. And on the transcendent issues, the most important issues of our day, I've been totally in agreement and support of President Bush.

Too bad Russert didn't tell him "you're trying to have your cake and eat it too."
  • Soundboy_jeff_meanie · 1 year ago
I've been totally in agreement and support of President Bush.
    ---

loop that statement around the picture of mcsame hugging chimpy... and get that message out!!

chimpy's approval rating hovers consistantly around 30%.... now play the message "I've been totally in agreement and support of President Bush."

    over and over.

    Where's the fight??

I see headlines that repeat and therefore reinforce the smears. That's not a fight.

I see some bland, unsourced statements that feed the "fair and balanced" media narrative instead of shutting the narrative down.

I see long quotes from Obama's book that might be useful as footnotes or an appendix. That's not a fight.

I see individual photos and videos and documents that help build the case. But I don't see the case built. That's not a fight.

The whole website is defensive. Any lawyer knows it's not enough to enter evidence into the record. You have to build the case. You have to take the fight to your accuser.

Right now fightthesmears.com doesn't get past the "yes you did" "no I didn't" level. Right now it's unimpressive. Right now it's only a start.

goddamn, your a bit of a hardass for a barbie, let alone a malibu barbie.

he is publically denouncing thier smears. that's all he needs to do. why waste energy fighting phantoms?
  • Soundboy_jeff_meanie · 1 year ago
Barbie was always a hardass... Skipper was the free spirit.

alas, Skipper was dumped for Ken and years later could be seen shouting "WANNA DATE?!?" on the courner of Hollywood and Vine.

Ken enjoyed the party lifestyle... but everyone knows he was spending countless hours bent over G.I. Joe's Howitzer barrel. I mean, being bent over BY G.I. Joe's Howtizer barrel.

...anyway, short story long. Barbie is a hardass.

I think the main point of the site is to provide a clearing house for people to know the truth. In a lot of ways it would be dumb for Obama to aggressively go after the people who started the rumors, it would appear very quickly that he was infringing on 1st amendment rights and using his "power" to stiffle the little guy. No, I think the tone is right, debunk any smears that are out there and provide a place for people to come and use as a resource. I think he's going more for a factcheck.org or snopes.com kind of feel.

factcheck.org or a snopes.com kind of feel would be better than what he's got. And mediamatters.org or thinkprogress.org kind of feel would be even better.

fightthesmears.com just drops the evidence in your lap and says "draw your own conclusions". That's not how journalism works and definitely not how politics works. You have to grab people by the lapels, you have to walk people through it step by step.

I hear ya, but Obama so far has chosen the soft-shoe approach for most of his campaign, and its been very successful. I suspect the idea is to keep it as passive as possible, and use the press and word-of-mouth to keep it in the back of peoples minds as a "resource". We shall see. Probably as the campaign gets more ugly it will be more aggressive about sending out emails and press releases, but now its very existence still needs to sink into the consciouseness.

Hey, it's definately a step in the right direction and far better than we've done in the past. Anticipate and react quickly, good strategy.

    suggestion to the Obama camp

    put the "truth" statements first....

your want to reinforce the "good" before "bad"

I too have used the phrase "whitey." As in, "One famous baseball player is Whitey Ford."

He DID play baseball, didn't he? So many sports, so little interest on my part...
  • tacoeatingzebra · 1 year ago
Obama has convinced me that's he's not going to roll over and play dead like Gore and Kerry did.
  • Jim Olson · 1 year ago
Can we please do something about the ads? The banner at the top, and the ad below the comments are BOTH for McCain for President.
  • tacoeatingzebra · 1 year ago
let them waste their money on this site...
  • lark83 · 1 year ago
I like it. It shows their commitment to not take any crap off of the repugs and full time respond right away. I personally have heard one of those rumors they address from one of my GOP friends. Its amazing what ordinarily intelligent people will believe. You've got to address the lies and smack them down right away.
  • gumbygirl · 1 year ago
How sad that he has to waste valuable time debunking crap a gullible four year old wouldn't believe. Sometimes I am very ashamed of people in this country.
  • LeesiD · 1 year ago
John, Just to let you know and the readers know, there is another website out there that is not Obama's website for attacking smears, no doubt made up by the very same hatemongers that Barack is trying to combat. Here is the fake website, MSNBC reported it ealier today. http://www.fightthesmears.org
We should all do our part in fighting this trash too~
