So the 17 year old was simply following in her Mom footsteps... and that's good family values!

I think I'll keep my gay family values...thank you!

To a good portion of the religious right crowd, a repentant sinner is a greater person than the person who never sinned. How many times have we heard the "I've been to the dark side and I've come back!" from the evangelical preachers? This is akin to George W having been a drunk and slacker, but found God and saw the light.

The religious right can relate to that. They have knocked up daughters. Or have been knocked up. Or knocked someone up. Or have a problem with liquor and temptation. Some of them even toe tap in airport bathroom stalls. etc, etc. Just like Geroge W and Palin and all those good people who know they've done wrong...and are repentant.

We scratch our heads at this thinking. "How can they think Palin's qualified when her kid's life's a mess?", we say to ourselves, "How can they be such hypocrites?" The opiate of the religious is forgiveness. It's we on the left who are irredeemable - not because we sin - but because we don't consider it a sin and don't believe we need to be forgiven.

We should be careful NOT to underestimate the power of Palin's narrative to the faithful.

She has so many skeletons in the closet, the GOP thought her cover-up skills will be invaluable.
  • ZennButtKicker (tlhwraith) · 1 year ago
I don't know if this line of investigation is even worth it. All it will do is shore up the bible-thumpers who see nothing wrong with the Bristol Palin shotgun-situation. If Sarah did the same thing, they'll just spin it as her having "respect for life" even when she was that young.

I say there are plenty of other juicy tidbits to skewer Palin with and that the whole "wedlock-gate" will probably do more harm than good for the cause.

I hope everyone realizes what very thin ice this sort of story skates on.

In the world that I grew up in - a world that still very much exists - if a girl gets "that way", everything is A-OK once the preacher shows up. Then it's just sort of a joke - a sign that they are lusty, life-loving people.

There's not a middle-class or lower-class family that this hasn't happened in. In my Mom's family, two of her five sisters (that I know of) "had to get married". It should be noted that both of those marriages lasted until death.

"I hope everyone realizes what very thin ice this sort of story skates on."

    Amen, Happy Housewife.

This story, and that of the 17-year-old daughter's pregnancy, are taking oxygen away from coverage of truly damning issues like Palin's attempt at library censorship, her support of Pat Buchanan, the multiple stories of her abusing her power as mayor of Wasilla and as governor of Alaska, and her flip-flops on pork spending (what else am I missing? i have been offline for an hour lol).

John, with great respect, this is a non-story, and pushing it is beneath this blog. Nobody cares when a woman gets pregnant and does "the right thing" by marrying the father.
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
Social issues have been the top issue for the republican party for 30 years now. I think that when Republicans try to legislate what takes place in our bedrooms, then their hypocrisy on those matters is relevant. We have to stop applying our standards to their actions. Meaning, we don't think it's a story that people are gay, so we don't want to report on their hypocrisy in being anti-gay and gay. We don't think single people having sex and getting pregnant is a problem, so we don't think it's relevant when people who lecture us about being single and having sex and getting pregnant do it themselves. The GOP has for 30 years pushed our bedrooms into the public sphere, tried to legislate and judge our sex lives, and now we're the bad people for suggesting that they're hypocrites. Sorry, but as I said, I think there's a serious problem with that logic. And once again, it's the reason they tend to win and we tend to lose.
  • larz · 1 year ago
The other stories are just starting to surface -many showing abuses during her term as mayor. A lot of people seemed scared of her and I sense that she's notorious for holding grudges and using her powers for payback. There's the library censorship, hiring/firing scandals, she raised taxes by 33% to build a sports center that was supposed to bring in money (it hasn't) and a whole lot more. Don't worry, it'scoming.

  • Fireblazes(CheetohsandCatfood) · 1 year ago
I'm sorry, but so fucking what? Netroots is just screwing up, and screwing yourselves! Issues, please? Like how McCain's non-campaigning in LA. is really just campaigning.
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
Yeah, because elections are never won or lost on silly social issues, and the religious right doesn't really care about these things, nor do they have any real role in the election. So I stand corrected. Very silly of us to care about social issues when they're the number one reason Sarah palin was selected, the number one reason John McCain thinks she can win him the presidency. Silly me.
  • Fireblazes(CheetohsandCatfood) · 1 year ago
The social issue is abstinence education and a total lack of kids knowing how they got pregnant. My point is that this situation is so common among all people, including evangelical and Pentecostals that it elicits a sympathetic reaction. My dear departed mother republican baptist to the bone, said "The first child can come at anytime. the next takes a little longer." Palin's people are sympathetic to her and her daughter's life issues. What brings these people together is when "outsiders" attack the "poor woman and her family". Attack on social issues all you want but netroots is just coming off as being mean. You are preaching to the choir here, but your discussion on "social issues" is just giving the repubs ammunition to use against the Democratic Party.
  • canuck55 · 1 year ago
Really, all of these drip, drip, drip, stories speak to the sloppy and impulsive nature of McCain's :presidential" decision making. It should be very clear that, had a proper vetting been done, no one in their right mind would have picked Palin for the VP slot.
  • John Aravosis · 1 year ago
    bingo.
  • Fireblazes(CheetohsandCatfood) · 1 year ago
That's right, this should be about McCain's lack of judgment, not a 16 year oldgirls or her mother 19 years ago. If you want a good angle go at it from it is the obvious fact that Mom has not matured or improved her judgment.
  • brie · 1 year ago
Something about this story still doesn't add up for me. If the daughter is going to marry the father, what's the holdup? They say she's five months along -- there's been plenty of time to take care of this. The summer would have been a good time, when they were out of school. Would have given them some time together before the baby arrives.

And if this marriage was always in the plan, why make a bombshell national announcement out of it? Why wasn't it handled back in Alaska a long time ago? It all reeks of panic and desperation. I feel sorry for the daughter, having her personal situation used by her mother to "explain" anomalies in her own backstory.
  • rusty08 · 1 year ago
I also feel sorry for Levi her baby's father. He is only 18 yrs old and his life will be full of strive and responsibilities. They are both kids and they should not have been dating in the first place. Parents are supposed to protect their children and show them family values by not allowing them to be alone where their emotions can get the best of them. And yes, if they are suppose to marry, why haven't they done it yet?
  • katjam · 1 year ago
A story not unlike Obama's parents. Drop this and the story about Palin's daughter. There will be a rise in a sympathy vote if you don't. Palin's obvious unsuitability in many other areas is already out there. THe emphasis needs to be placed squarely on McCain's impulsivity and poor judgement.
  • warmmidwest · 1 year ago
What do you think the MSM would be reporting if it was Barack Obama's unwed, pregnant African American teenage daughter? Think about that for a second ... because that's all it takes.

as far as I'm concerned, the very legitimate point this brings up is as follows:

why would anyone with a family background like this ever presume to dictate to anyone else the rules of traditional family values?

especially when this person was chosen as vp precisely to appeal to the fundamentalist faction of the GOP.

Obama can't and won't say this. we can.

AP just published quite a piece...good reading, but the headline is stupid.
  • Sage24 · 1 year ago
It's the sheer hypocrisy that gets to me....here she talks self righteously about abstinence, and then we learn, she was not the abstaining type!!! She pushes for creationism and no sex education in school, and does not even advocate birth control...and her teenage daughter ends up pregnant. Yes, she is indeed a republican with good family values.

The republicans are trying to make her out to be this great, suitable candidate, and the peculiar reasons they say she is qualified, is because:

    1. She sold a plane on ebay.

    2. She stood up to the people in her party.

    3. She lives next to Russia, and knows foreign policy.

    4. She has executive powers over 50 people in her office - Obama does not.

    5. She cut property taxes.

    6. She was in the PTA.

Great qualifications for a person who is a heart beat away from the Presidency, no?

MSNBC just reported that the Palin's did not give their children the heads up regarding her possible VP chances and in fact took them to Ohio to "celebrate their parent's anniversary". I would like to see more on this, I can't imagine not giving your children the courtesy of discussing this before accepting the position but especially considering that their seventeen year old is pregnant. :-(

MISSING PALIN FAMILY PHOTOS: Why are Republicans now hiding everything including Palin family photos which are revealing of the truth and the " missing " lobbyist gal pal of Johnny who went by the name of Vickie Iseman before she got into the adultery protection program? Wing nuts can dish it out can't they. What a double standard. If any Dem had a story like this, first thing that would come out of the wing nuts mouth is "How Incompetent" the parents are. You talk about mean and vicious, the wing nuts thru their leaders are the most venomous of them all.

I know a few right wingers, and they are basically pretty cool, hell my brother's one. In his case, although he is totally against abortions and gays, he doesn't hate anyone who gets an abortion and he doesn't hate gays. He simple thinks its wrong, and vote for persons who believe the way he does.

But you know, this year he is voting for Obama. Why? Because O has taken the high road, and finally, he is against the war, the war inwhich we had heated arguments about.

So please right wingers, look in the mirror first before you judge.
