Except for the "Very Important" Uncommmitted SuperDelegates" ( Gore, etc...)
I would tend to think, they are the ones which you can't count on or haven't been able to count on to get the votes to override George Bush. they are the ones where you have to wheel and deal and pull teeth to get them to vote progressive. I would tend to think they are the BlueDog Democrats and not the Progressive Democrats.
These are the ones you have worry about that would not be good role models for the "New" Democratic Party.
These are the type of people who won't make date plans on Monday for a Saturday night date...they want to see if something better comes along later in the week. .

I'm afraid the Dems are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Obama is the better candidate, and offers more vision and future direction than either Clinton or McCain. However, Obama will be the most vulnerable in a general election campaign, to GOP attack.
They will use a lot of stuff that Clinton has not. The "swift boat" attacks on Obama will focus on:
- his statement that if things get ugly in America, he will stand with the Muslims - picture of him with arms folded during national anthem (or pledge, whatever) while Clinton and Richardson had hands on heart - Reverend Wright - William Ayers - Michelle Obama's negative sound bites - his recently disclosed 3-week college trip to Pakistan (why was such a major foreign trip in neither of his autobiographies)
GOP attack machine will use all of the above in simplistic sound bites.
Which is why, I still think that Clinton will get the nomination. If it is close, the party elders will HAVE to consider all of the above and consider electability in the face of the sure-to-come GOP onslaught.

GrahamCrackerDC: "However, Obama will be the most vulnerable in a general election campaign, to GOP attack."
No offense, but this is an outright lie that the Hillbots keep trying to perpetuate. For the last 9 months the GOP has done nothing but attack Obama 24/7 (since they felt he was the bigger threat). The Republicans have already thrown everything they've got at Obama since they were so desperate to get him to lose against Hillary. Don't forget, they were praying they would face Hillary in November because they have so much dirt on her. Since Obama is going to get the nomination, the GOP's ploy failed. They've already used up any oppo-research they had on Obama. He is going to win over McCain in a landslide.
Mike_H

I don't think it's an "outright lie" that Obama will be more vulnerable to the GOP in a general election campaign, since you can't know until we actually go through it. I think it's a reasonable assumption to make, but it's also just as reasonable, as you suggest, that he's already stood up to so much that he'll be fine in the general election.
But both sides of that discussion are making guesses as to what the future general election will hold, so both sides aren't speaking of "facts" or "truths". It's like me saying that the Red Sox WILL win the series this year, and you calling me a liar for saying it. It's a future event that we can't know for sure until it happens.
But we can make our best guesses about who the best candidate will be, and clearly right now most Democrats feel that is Obama. Time will tell if that is right or not.

GrahamCracker,
Americans hate nothing more than repeats. These smears are old news and now they backfire. Clinton's and McCain's vulnerabilities are much longer and this election is a new ball game. EVERYTHING you listed has already been blogged and broadcasted...and most Americans have yawned. Making an issue of the Pakistan trip is pathetic. Even the news media know that visiting Pakistan decades ago is too silly to mention...and if his "passport travel" becomes an issue, the break-in is already on the record..under Bush's watch.
davidkc

All the things you've listed above HAVE been used by Hillary and her minons against Obama already, and Obama has come out stronger in the face of such relentless attacks from Hillary and her surrogates. Those attacks haven't worked on Obama so far, so why do you think it would be different in the GE? And there are boatloads of "dirt" on Hillary that the Repugs are just chomping at the bit to use against her in the GE.

Believe me, Billary and Slick Willy will try to buy off the superdelegates if they get the chance. I hope their is someone actually monitoring the process. It's amazing that the superDs are actually saying they are AFRAID of the Clintons. This just proves how ruthless and conniving Hill and Bill are. We can't afford to go back to the nightmare of the 90's with a new scandal every week. The superDs need to declare for Obama now and get it over with. Well, it is spineless in one sense, but in another, it's classically "left". We don't have a habit of marching in lockstep with the leaders like the GOP does. We have a greater diversity of viewpoints.
And, of course, the Clintons aren't anywhere near as evil as their worst detractors are suggesting they are -- politics IS a lot about the personal relationships you develop, and it can be a hard thing for many of these SuperDs, many of whom probably do have a longstanding relationship with the Clintons, and respect them, like them, etc. They may in fact acknowledge that she'd be a good president, even, but ending that dream for her is too hard for them to face right now, no matter that many of us think it would be the best thing "for the party".

Belinda, the 1990s were "scandal of the week" because of the GOP, not the Clintons. You are forgetting that the vast majority of those "scandals" were actually nothing at all -- rumors that had no evidence to back them up, just GOP attempts to smear the popular Democratic President Clinton.
I'll happily go back to living in the time of the Clinton Presidency versus the shameful time that either Bush presidency was.
Belinda

Mike_H: "the 1990s were 'scandal of the week' because of the GOP, not the Clintons."
I'm not talking about the whole oral sex scandal with Bill's very young intern Monica. I'm talking about the murder of Vince Foster, Whitewater, illegal funding from the Chinese (Charlie Tree), and on and on. Here's a short list: http://members.tripod.com/~GOPcapitalist/clinto...
If' we've learned nothing more during this campaign season, it's that the Clintons are totally corrupt and dishonest. Can we really afford to entrust our government to people with values like that?
Belinda, you're still parroting debunked talking points. Hillary did NOT photo-shop Obama's picture, and that's been debunked several times.
And I *was* referring to Whitewater, the "murder" of Vince Foster, etc -- not just Monica. None of those scandals turned out to have any actual PROOF, and were just typical GOP smear-tactics, throwing everything, every rumor they could think of, to try to taint the Clinton's.
With all that money -- taxpayer money, no less! -- thrown into investigating the Clintons, and so many Republicans HATING them, if there had been any proof that ANY of those things were true, it would have been found.
You are repeating lies from a GOP playbook. And proving my point, that the GOP were the cretins behind the cowardly attacks on the Clintons, and yet so many people have been fooled -- a lie gets repeated often enough and people think it's true.
Mike_H

Oh, and Belinda, you're getting your "list" of "Clinton crimes" right off of a GOP surrogate's website!! What could be more clear evidence that you've been duped by the right wing when you simply use THEIR talking points as your "proof"? Seriously, I understand that this campaign has gotten everyone emotional, but you are blinded by tons of misinformation. Disagree with Clinton's campaign strategy, her policies, that's fine. But to smear her as "slimy" because you've fallen for decades-old GOP spin is just not right, Belinda, and we're all better than that.

Even though they file separately, if AZ is a community property state, he gets half of her fortune if they divorce (unless he signed a pre-nup). And if she "loves" him in spite of the c**t reference, she'll probably leave it all to him, too. Besides, his mother is an oil heiress, and he'll probably get that, too. Don't forget that the superdelegates left are basically politicians and party workers.. so they aren't the type of people who are very decisive to begin with. That said, I think it seems more fair at this point to wait until all the primaries have taken place and then declare. That's the only way people won't complain about not hearing the 'will of the people'.

I used to think that, but I'm becoming more convinced that Obama is more vulnerable.
Additionally, I continue to hear from friends and relatives, all die-hard Democrats, who all have stories like "my uncle has voted Democratic for 50 years and says there's no way he's voting for a black guy." Interesting how everyone has a racist, Democrat, relative. I think there's some projection going on.

Graham, that's just sad, but I bet there's some truth to it.
But I wonder if there are just as many misogynists in the party as well, people who's uncle would say there's "no way he's voting for a woman"?
It's very exciting that we have a woman and a black man as our top candidates, and I think it says a lot about us and our progress, but it may still be a vulnerability that either candidate will have to deal with.

John McCain received $45K from SS? The highest payment now is around $25K per year. That $45K was for 2 years. And I was wrong about community property (being from NC), but--they have been married for 27 years, and I believe that CindyLou has contributed quite a bit, growing the company in that period. Find out what the company was worth in 1981, and what it's worth now.
Her income should be public since they are married, after all, and it would appear he is trying to hide his wealth, to appear that he's the poorest of the 3.
Also note that the "charities" he shows contributions to are the McCain Family Foundation which pays out the money (and what charities would those be?).
Mrs. McCrazy doesn't want her "children's" privacy violated if her returns are made public. Hey, aren't they all grown by now? They have nothing to do with her tax return...
grandma
Older and Wiser....not sure how that works..as far as Cindy releasing her returns
From NBC's Domenico Montanaro McCain released his tax returns today. They include 2006 and 2007 and nothing previously. In addition, no returns or summaries are included for wife Cindy McCain, who head a beer distribution chain. Also note, John and Cindy McCain have filed separate tax returns for every year of their marriage except their first year, 27 years ago. On questions of transparency, the McCain campaign points out that the Arizona senator has filed financial disclosures while he has been in public life.
Senator and Mrs. McCain have kept their personal finances separate throughout their 27-year marriage. Accordingly, they have for many years filed separate tax returns. However, their home state of Arizona is a community property jurisdiction. In community property states, individuals maintain a separation of all property brought to the marriage, or inherited during it, but share financial responsibility for other assets acquired through the efforts of each spouse during the marriage. This means that their tax returns report one half of each of their community property income and expenses (such as income each of them earn as salaries, Senator McCain's book royalties, and expenses attributable to both of them such as charitable contributions from community assets).
btw. I see John McCain has no Public Events today...Now wonder...HE would of been asked if he was an Elitist.

Two major stars of the Democratic foreign policy establishment -- former Sens. Sam Nunn and David Boren, have just endorsed Barack Obama and have agreed to serve on his national security team.
Here's Nunn: "Demonizing the opposition, oversimplifying the issues, and dumbing down the political debate prevent our country from coming together to make tough decisions and tackle our biggest challenges." Here's Boren: "“Our most urgent task is to end the divisions in our country, to stop the political bickering, and to unite our talents and efforts. Americans of all persuasions are pleading with our political leaders to bring us together. I believe Senator Obama is sincerely committed to that effort. He has made a non-partisan approach to all issues a top priority."

He gave $105,467 to charities last year and $96,758 in 2006.In the interest of protecting the privacy of her children, Mrs. McCain will not be releasing her personal tax returns. http://blogs.usatoday.com/onpolitics/2008/04/mc...

Maybe it's not their real logic, but I like the idea of having every primary state and group vote first. I suppose it would be nicer if we didn't have to wait until June, but really, I'm very glad that Pennsylvanians will have a voice, even if we already know what the outcome will be regardless of what this voice says.
I guess one of the benefits of this primary calendar is that the voting is more resistant to the scandal of the day. Pennsylvania primary voters will be voting on candidates with an image much different from what South Carolina primary voters voted on. If only there were better planning centrally and the order of the states were rotated from year to year, we could have a useful primary calendar in that sense.

"The SuperDs are scared of Hillary and Bill, and their supporters, and while they plan on voting for Obama, they want "cover". See, this is what happens when you lose those ruby slippers! Hillary and Bill can get you! Nothing to do with the fear of influencing the outcome in upcoming primaries. Nothing to do with corruptly throwing a race to the leader (not the winner until a concession or the convention) before the primaries are over and the convention meets. No, no, it's just these poor, frightened Democratic politicians trying to avoid the wrath of one of the candidates. Sheesh. I am very sorry, but that is why we have a convention - to pick the candidate. Quite often we know who the candidate will be before the convention, but not always. Sen. Clinton is an able politician. If she is unable to get any delegates (not superdelegates, but regular delegates) to break away after the first few ballots in Denver, I have little doubt she will recognize the fact that she can't get the nomination and lead the vote for a unanimous acclamation of Sen. Obama. Anything else would be political suicide and Sen. Clinton has never struck me as the suicidal type. Either Democrat would be an excellent president. I simply fail to see what is gained by short-circuiting the process (the same process, by the way, that unseated the Michigan and Florida delegates). Poll after poll shows both Senator Clinton and Sen. Obama defeating Sen. McCain and that is while we have yet to pick a candidate. I have little fear that one of two persons will sit in the White House in 2009 and neither has an (R) behind them.

The MSM and ultra-leftists are totally in the tank for the Obamanable Showman. Au contraire to Obama's scorn for "bitter" Dems who may have lost their jobs---Hillary is scornful of rich elitists who comprise MoveOn's leadership. Yet the ultra-left now is promoting the complete distortion that Hillary scorns the little guy. Her reputed remark thirteen years ago at Camp David in a closed session is supposed to "mirror" or "negate" Obamaman's remarks to an elite group of RICH fundraisers in SF a FEW WEEKS ago.
To ask its audience to believe this, as Kos & Politico are doing, is either stupid or completely dishonest.
Indeed, the "poll" by Newsweak, another MSM major in the tank for Obama, contradicts the much more recent and honest poll by Gallup which shows Hillary closing nationally on Obama.
Rush's "Operation Chaos" or the old Dem circular firing squad is at work. McCain should look again at that Quinnipiac poll that has him & Condi destroying Obama/Clinton in NY, NJ, and New England.
John-boy is too old and stubborn, but he should consider pulling that rabbit out of his hat.

Mike_H, you completely ignore the astounding rise of Barack Obama. He is opposing the most powerful political machine this country has know, yet he is the candidate the majority of this country wants. As Dave Of The Jungle sez: Prepare For The Punitive Election of '08. It's coming...
Mike_H

Mirth, I'm not ignoring his astounding rise at all, I give him a lot of credit. But he's not (yet) opposing the "most powerful political machine this country has known" and he won't do that until we get into the general election. If the Clintons really were as all-powerful as you say, Obama's campaign wouldn't have gotten off the ground in the first place.
And it's also not yet clear Obama truly is the candidate the majority of this country wants. I'm not saying that to disrespect him, it's just that polling is all over the place, and this far out from November Michael Dukakis had a commanding lead over George Bush, and we all know how that turned out.
There is legitimate excitement but how long that will last, or if something causes the tide to turn, is something we won't know until we go through the election. And that's the same if Clinton is our candidate, don't get me wrong.
Maybe the Punitive Election of '08 is indeed coming, but I don't want to assume anything right now. The GOP has proven many times over that there is no tactic too low for them to try, and too many Americans are swayed by things exactly like the lapel pin issue for me to be comfortable.
Let's just say my optimism about a Democratic victory in November is very, very cautious.

I DON"T THINK one reporter has asked him on camera about that picture.
all it will take is one reporter ON CAMERA to BUNK that LIE.
Nuff said.

you haver got to be kidding...his wifes income as sole heir to the Hensley fortune is $300,000,000.00 THREE HUNDRED MILLION A YEAR....fuck him
....
No offense, but this is an outright lie that the Hillbots keep trying to perpetuate."

But that doesn't mean she's not paying attention or doesn't understand her country is at stake.
No offense, but this is an outright lie that the Hillbots keep trying to perpetuate. For the last 9 months the GOP has done nothing but attack Obama 24/7 (since they felt he was the bigger threat). The Republicans have already thrown everything they've got at Obama s
I AGREE, Even that radio guy from Philly ...Smurkonich the Rightie who shows up on MSNBC...he even said look waht has been thrown out at Obama and his rating keep going up.
Obama's ratings keep going up.
From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
McCain released his tax returns today.

Two major stars of the Democratic foreign policy establishment -- former Sens. Sam Nunn and David Boren, have just endorsed Barack Obama and have agreed to serve on his national security team.
http://marcambinder.theatlantic.com/archives/20...
He has made a non-partisan approach to all issues a top priority."
people, the billionaires havent a clue, what an average americans life is like, multimillionaireCharlie Gibson thinks an AVERAGE MIDDLE INCOME PERSON MAKES 250,000 dollars per year

more like, the average middle income person makes about 250,000 in SIX years... before taxes & healthcare are taken out.
My apologies for some confusion. McCain received almost $50,000 from Social Security over two-years (2006-2007)
McCain's taxable income (income after deductions) was $258,800 in 2007 and $215,304 in 2006. He gave $105,467 to charities last year and $96,758 in 2006.In the interest of protecting the privacy of her children, Mrs. McCain will not be releasing her personal tax returns.

does that make you the anti-poster? I mean, WTF?

an analogy... the superdelegates are the secretaries for Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada.
no need to mention who 'Meryl Streep' is.
That's all. ;-)
they have been cowed by the Clinton Tag Team.
and did you see this?

But rich are rich...no matter what race, what gender, what nationality. And their motivating force is greed.
You're in denial. Obama's the hater. We've let these candidates off the hook too easily. If they're not held accountable now, it's going to be too late when one of them takes office. And how dare any of them answer questions regarding their questionable behavior with vague answers. They treat us like we're stupid and we let them get away with it.
Drudge is also a major GOP backer even though he's gay, and his site has perpetrated some of the worst anti-liberal stuff on the net.

its called self-hate.
if he ever is completely outed... he'll have some excuse as to 'why he's gay', like... he was molested by a liberal when he was young.
.
Sweet of you, Nigel (me ♥ Nigel), but it isn't worth the effort. I'm also receiving personal threats such as they know where I live and there's a mob hit out on me.

mirth, are you serious?!?!?! WTF?!
Hill depends on low information citizens because they can be misled by spin lies and distortion. I'd be careful about throwing around terms like "stupid" or "completely dishonest" if I was you...
If we judge by how much attention one's comments get...I win!
alexa, it's mind-boggling that you are so detached from reality, but since you are turned off by "a hater, a liar, or a warmonger," then you support Barack Obama whether you know it or not.
Fight for Mirth...err, I meant Earth! LOL
Mike_H, you completely ignore the astounding rise of Barack Obama. He is opposing the most powerful political machine this country has know, yet he is the candidate the majority of this country wants. As Dave Of The Jungle sez: Prepare For The Punitive Election of '08. It's coming...
Barack Hussein Obama 2008
Flash: It isn't working any better than previous tactics.
alexa,
What sittenpretty said. Wake the hell up!
Mike_H,
Yes, I get that you are "very very cautious," but this is nothing more than denial of the wellspring of support across the entire country for Obama who has with dignity and cool ridden through all that has been thrown at him by the masterful poo-flinger. It's time to get on the bus, brother...or stay mired in denial and miss all empowerment that Barack is bringing to the people of this very damaged country. Your choice.
btw: I disagree with nearly everything you write, but I always read your comments and appreciate their lack of silly venom.
