Pump prices lift Shell and BP to record £7.2bn

    David Robertson
BP and Royal Dutch Shell have reported massive increases in profits for the first three months of this year on the back of rocketing petrol prices, which are expected to hit £5 a gallon today.

BP's pre-tax profits rose 48 per cent in the first quarter to $6.6 billion (£3.3 billion) while Shell increased its profits 12 per cent to a record $7.8 billion (£3.9 billion).

The increase has been driven by the rising oil prices, which the companies have passed on to consumers in the form of higher petrol and diesel costs.

I really don't have a propblem with what Wright said yesterday, in fact I nwould agree with about 90% of what he said. What I do have a problem with is this mans ego. He should have kept his trap shut and helped to usher in the first black president, instead he has given wiggle room to HRC. Wright has given cannon powder to her and McCain and Wright's arrogance and thirst for the the limelight have blinded this obvious outcome.
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
Obama did a great job this morning and I'm really glad he chose to deal with this right away. The longer he waited the harder it would be.

good. Wright is to be respected as a veteran of the military, but he seems a little wingnutty to me. wonder what his views are on same sex marriage......

anyone else notice that the last 5 minutes of Bush's "speech" today when he was describing the situation with Pres. Mugabe....was eerily descriptive of his own administration?
  • bacalove · 1 year ago
There was a time when Rev. Jerimiah Wright was once very respected and sought after, hence his trip to the White House invited by Bill and Hillary Clinton when they were going through Bill's Impeachment. During this time of trial, who did Bill and Hillary turn to for Prayer and Support, yes, the Rev. Wright himself! Then we have Hillary surrogates who have connections to Rev. Wright (1) surrogate, Congresswoman Shiela Jackson Lee, a devotee of Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Wright; he has preached at her home church, where she is actively involved, annually for the past 15 years and has an open invitation to return, and, that she sat in the pews for his visits and did not bat an eye? AND (2) surrogate, Rev. Marcia Dyson, who was not only a longtime member of Trinity United Church of Christ but also still considers Rev. Jeremiah Wright her pastor! And was it not at Trinity were she first met her husband, Rev. Dr. Michael Dyson, who's been very vocal in his defense of Rev. Wright.? So you see, there was a time that Rev. Wright was "higly respected, had great influence and sought after, hence his trip to the White House."

As for Rev. Wright's part, it seems he was "tempted" and took the "bite" to go take part in this media blitz by Hillary supporter, Rev. Dr. Barbara Reynolds from Maryland, who has endorsed Hillary on her website -- Reynoldsnews.com, all the while knowing it would cause more sensation and not be helpful to Barack Obama. This incitement and temptation by a Hillary supporter has given Barack the ability to do what a lot of his supporters wanted him to do, strongly distance himself from Rev. Wright!

On the otherhand, why would a Republican-owned Media give a "retired" Rev. Wright all that air time, getting all three Cable News Channels to air Rev. Wright's 45 minute speech in its entirety, SOMETHNG RESERVED FOR PRESIDENTS. The Candidates themselves, John McCain, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, only receive Blips on the cable television shows for their stump speeches! Was this a coordinated effort, and by whom?

Are Repbublicans trying to help Hillary win the Democratic nomination? Then try to win the White House with the help of African-American voters turned off by the Clintons' "kitchen sink-strategy" directed at Barack Obama? Is that why McCain is so actively wooing them? Is that why a Republican-controlled Media "daily" 24/7, through their talking heads build-up Hillary, tear/smear down Obama, so that if Hillary does become the Democratic nominee, they can then unleash their "arsenol" of weapons that they have against her, something they have been planning for years! They have even engaged Karl Rove through his letter to Barack by disengenuously suggesting that Barack has lost his touch-- that he can't attract white-working class Americans, etc., something they know he can do and has done! And why is President Bush have a sudden interest in making all these speeches? Unfortunately, Barack has to fight a "two-headed" Giant -- the Clintons and the Republicans, and their Republican-controlled Media, maybe it's three heads -- an awesome, destructive power and force indeed for one lone man to go up against! These Republicans and their corporate-owned media are no friend to the average joe! They fear what Barack stands for unity and power.

Let's be really clear, the only Ones who have made Race an Issue in this campaign are the Clintons and the Republican-controlled media -- from the start, Barack Obama has tried to transcend Race, but they will not let him, as it would be to their disadvantage... daily they inform us he cannot attract white-blue collar workers, hoping if they say it long enough, it will catch on and people will begin to believe this. They do not want a candidate who inspires hope, unity and change, so they, and the Clintons -- the two-headed Giant -- try to bring Obama down anyway and with any lie they can! The Republicans for their own reason (they don't want change) and the Clintons for theirs (they want the nomination)! Either way it is a mighty battle and if they get their way, the People Lose! That is why Clintons and Media are trying to make this a "racial" thing, you know divide and conquer so the people cannot concentrate on the real issues and miss the boat again!

And yes, it was time for an amicable Parting of the Ways between Barack and Rev. Wright who has definitely put a sword in his side. I now understand why Barack thinks some people are bitter -- he has been conditioned to think that way by the bitterness of his former Pastor, to think that some people are bitter, although Barack was not subject to this bitterness himself but was able to overcome this conditioning and escape it rahter incorporating ther engery of inspiration goodwill and hope instead! I hope we the people will not be blindsided by this onslaught directed at this Candidate of Change and Hope we have in Barack Obama and miss the boat again by allowing him to be "Swiftboated"!

Hey, wouldn't it be funny if, after Obama's denounces Wright, Wright gets all ticked off and holds a press conference and then announces he's throwing his support behind Hillary! THAT would be a sight to see!

Ya know what I find interesting........I have no idea who George W. Bush's, Dick Cheney's, John McCain's or Hillary Clinton's Reverend, Pastor, Minister or Priest is. Have they all been invited to speak at the National Press Club? Have they all been asked to share their religious and political views with the American people? Have all of their past preachings, teachings and words been thoroughly vetted and characterized? Or is Barrack Obama's Reverend the only one under the news media's microscope?

good point, after repeated requests by left wing panelists (Maddow), talk show hosts (Steph Miller, Ed schultz, etc) and bloggers to shed some light on McCain's pastor/political friend Hagee, the MSM has ignored their association. I think it is well within reason to suggest that the MSM is very scared of a black man becoming prez.
  • Nigel Elliott · 1 year ago
Now Hagee is "fair game" because McCain said Wright was. Will McCain denounce his bigoted religious advisor too? Will the media make a big deal of Hagee? Both, highly doubtful.

But then again WHAT THE F DOES IT MATTER WHAT WRIGHT SAYS? Considering the more-than-one totally nutty religious shysters that have supported McCain, Bush, and every other Republican for years--and not a whimper from the press. Nobody has to disown, repudiate, deny, reject...
  • andyphx · 1 year ago
I agree. He made a real ass out of himself yesterday. He was acting as though this is all about him. What a grandstanding dick. After what he said at the NAACP conference, that Barrack was only saying what he had said about Wright was about politics, I don't blame Obama publically disavowing him altogether. Barrack showed class when earlier he distanced himself from Wrights comments but at the same time lauding his military service to this country and to his community. What did he get for it: Wright calling Obama an Uncle Tom.
  • moreleesafer · 1 year ago

Wright is an egomaniac. If he gave a dayum about the country or Obama he would not have given in to the temptation to the press blitz this weekend.

So because you finally realize that Wright is insane this somehow means Clinton is not "a normal person" or "a good Christian". Also, I guess she is not a "real man" either. I would call you out for being sexist and reinforcing gender stereotypes, but I'm not that petty. :) I am sure you meant to say real person.

What you fail to acknowledge is that Wright has been insane for some time now. He didn't just fall on the sidewalk and smack his head last week and wake up like this. Many of us have known this about him for a while now. What is disturbing is that Obama didn't realize is as he was using this man as the inspiration for his book that launched his run for President. He was much more than his pastor. People leave that out when it is convenient.

It's been 62 days since John McCain said he was "very proud" and "honored" to have Pastor John Hagee's endorsement. But McCain still has not been asked - or answered - the question: Does John McCain agree with Pastor Hagee that war with Iran is the fulfillment of the biblical prophecy of Armageddon?

I love Obama but I do not believe for one god-damn second that he believes in god, jesus, mary or joseph. Nobody with intelligence believes in god. If they say they do it is only to exert control over others (Rev. Wright is very smart for example). Rev. Wright used his brainpower to make a bunch of dumb mother fuckers buy him a $1.6 million home.

    RePost

The problem is that for 20 years Obama took his family to church where Rev. Wright spewed his ridiculous hatred. Obama used that church to build his black credentials in the Chicago community. When Wright's racist comments were made public, Obama rushed to his defense with a widely acclaimed policy speech on race. In that speech Obama went to great lengths to defend his friend Rev. Wright. "I could no more disown him than my own racist grandmother", etc. Now Wright is out there again and saying EXACTLY THE SAME THINGS AS BEFORE and Obama is now outraged. Obama has shown sustained poor judgment at picking his friends and church and the American people are paying attention.

Mark your calendar because Obama lost the election today. Soon Howard Dean or an appointed stooge will go to Obama and explain that for the good of his career and the party, it's time to drop. They will paint Obama as the savior of the Democrat party and loyal enough to bow out gracefully in the midsts of the megalomaniac, Hillary Clinton. To keep the party from splitting in two, Obama was strong enough to hold it together at great personal sacrifice, etc.etc.

Obama may become President one day, but it wont be in 2008.
  • PhoenixWoman · 1 year ago
    What about John Hagee?

Obama never sought out Wright's endorsement. McCain damned near crawled over broken glass to get Hagee's:
    http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/ar...
  • bulldog909 · 1 year ago
Well, the difference is Hagee endorsed McCain's views, and Obama endorsed Wright's views. He named his book after Wright's sermon, he has maintained a close relationship to him for 20 years. I think McCain should have avoided that nut also, but his connection to him is much less than Obama's connection to Wright. As far as Hill, her connection to him was like that of McCain's - to get a few votes and support when needed. Cynical, yes. But at least he is not a millstone around her neck.
  • PhoenixWoman · 1 year ago
Actually, Hillary endorsed Wright's views tacitly when she used him as the human shield ten years ago. And speaking of preachers, Hillary has a far-right preacher named Doug Coe who happens to be much, MUCH crazier than Rev. Wright -- and much, MUCH more politically powerful: http://www.thenation.com/doc/20080331/ehrenreich
  • bulldog909 · 1 year ago
OK, just read the article. But I don't understand how left leaning Hillary would be accepted by a fascist group. She is the anti-Christ to the far right. If that is true it would be a big problem for her. At least there are no videotapes, which is what is kiling Obama/Wright.
  • Measured_Response · 1 year ago
You make excellent points, that I'm afraid long time Obama supporters don't want to acknowledge. This whole controversy IS about Obama and Wright, not Clinton and not McCain.

I suspect Obama took a gamble today that might come back to bite him even worse in the days to come. The ball is now in Wright's corner , does he shut up and fade away or does he back up his claims with a more in depth knowledge of his previous conversations with Obama.

So much of what Obama has said in the past seems to echo snippets of Wright, from Obama's books to Obama telling Wright FIRST that he would run for President, how one completely erases that aspect I have no idea.

I'm not a gambling man but I have to comment that Obama has done what he needed to do, BUT he may now also have put himself at more risk of Wright lashing out even more.

    Time will tell all.

  • sheld · 1 year ago
when I first heard Rev Wright's comments I felt so bad for him. Here was a preacher who had influenced a man who might possibly be the first black president of the USA. Now one of his sermons had been reduced to a sound bite and it could hurt his devoted follower. I wanted the rev to come out and show everyone that he was a truely wise and believable man of the cloth. After hearing his rants the last few days I have come to the realization that Rev. Wright does not want Barack Obama to be president. If a black man becomes president that might dilute some of the anger that makes up the Wright persona
  • yorts1 · 1 year ago
I listened to Wright's speech and most of his q & a (not other interviews throughout the day though, so I might have missed something). I agreed with most of what he said, which when not chopped up into sound bites makes a lot of sense to some of us who care about folks in the margins or find themselves there (maybe less sense to others who also care).

One problem is that as a preacher, sermons are Wright's strongest mode of communication. He preached yesterday. Thoughtful sermons have an arc of development like a good story and don't lend themselves to sound bites. Most of the more controversial of Wright's points are resolved with suggestions for reconciliation as part of their conclusion, but the MSM gets too hung up on his criticism of them or whatever will sell ad time to bother listening I suppose.

Wright also speaks from the fringes. It is built into his theology. He believes Jesus spoke from and for the fringes of society as well, and knows Christ used many of the same tactics he employees. I tend to find value in this. But take it from Jesus (Ghandi, MLK), it results in people in the middle of the page wanting to kill you.

The timing may seem poor to those of us who would like Obama to have an easier time of it (me included). But I'm sure Wright believes he answers to someone greater than Obama and that if Obama is to be elected, it will happen no matter what he says.
  • bulldog909 · 1 year ago
Wright didn't cross over yesterday. He said these things years ago, he just repeated them yesterday. He is a total loon, and clearly has been for years. Why did it take so long for Obama to figure that out? This church is an 'Afro-centric liberation theology' church. It has for years supported Farrakhan, blamed white people for every ill, blamed America for oppressing the world. It is a lunatic church. Period. Just like Hagee and some of the loonies on the right. Obama should have left it years ago.
  • PhoenixWoman · 1 year ago
Bulldog909: Wright may have some nutty opinions, but he also helped save LBJ's life when he was a Marine corpsman at Bethesda. He's not quite the "kill whitey!" hater you want him to be.

"Wright didn't cross over yesterday. He said these things years ago, he just repeated them yesterday. He is a total loon, and clearly has been for years. Why did it take so long for Obama to figure that out?"

Hillary and Bill were more than willing to use Rev. Wright as part of their godly human shield back in September 1998 when the Starr Report was about to come out. Come on, do you think that they would have used him if they seriously objected to his views? Cuts both ways, bulldog909.

In fact, the AA community is pissed that the Clintons are trashing a man who helped them in their hour of need ten years ago, and who they had no problems with ten years ago. So if you're going to trash Obama for "not figuring out" that Wright was a "loon", you have to trash the Clintons as well.

Raw Story has a piece on the Clinton supporter who helped arrange the Wright performance.

    Oooh! Here's the story:

"Shortly before he rose to deliver his rambling, angry, sarcastic remarks at the National Press Club Monday, [Rev. Jeremiah] Wright sat next to, and chatted with, Barbara Reynolds," The New York Daily News' Errol Lewis begins Tuesday.

"A former editorial board member at USA Today, she runs something called Reynolds News Services and teaches ministry at the Howard University School of Divinity," he adds. "It also turns out that Reynolds - introduced Monday as a member of the National Press Club "who organized" the event - is an enthusiastic Hillary Clinton supporter.

More at the link above. It's really sad, as Morris says, that the Rev. Wright was letting himself be used like this.

Only on Americablog would Obama's complete lack of candor with respect to how little he knew Wright over the past 20 years would this be seen as a positive for Obama. Wright didn't just start spewing this junk yesterday. He's been doing it for years. And Obama knew it, which is why he dis-invited Wright from his press conference announcing his run for president early last year. Why was he trying to hide Wright then?

Oh yeah, and this is all Hillary's fault because she clearly had a gun pointed at Wright's head yesterday forcing him to go before the press club and start talking. Obamabots are so invested in this guy that they now resort to kooky conspiracy theories to blame Clinton for what Wright has been saying for years.

I was listening to Thom Hartmann today, and he brought up an interesting point -- Rev Wright recently published a book. Thom's opinion was that he was using the media hype to sell more copies. Apparently (I wasn't aware of this, but...), publishing companies pay authors more $$ if they can drum up a PR campaign to draw more publicity to themselves to sell more copies of their books. Wright was still wrong to keep mouthing off and hurting Obama's campaign, but it makes sense. Minister or not, he has an ego like a heard of elephants, and his using the media to fill his book sale coffers doesn't surprise me at all.

The claim about our government creating the AIDS virus may seem to the layman as outrageous and preposterous, but I believe it is not as implausible as it may seem. Has everyone forgotten about the anthrax virus that was a major scare just after 9/11 and just days before the infamous Patriot Act was passed? Our own government has admitted that the anthrax virus strain probably originated from its own biological/chemical weapon research facility at Fort Detrick, Maryland. Our government has yet to find the culprit behind that scare and I wonder if it really wants to. How many people are putting pressure on our government to do so? Surprisingly, it seems not our Congresscritters who to this day cannot receive "snail mail" from their constituents in the reasonable span of time that the rest of us do because of the lengthy screening process their mail must go through.

The fact is the world is full of conspiracies and intrigues, especially in DC, although that does not necessarily mean that all of the intrigues and conspiracies one can imagine and dream up are real. The claim about the AIDS virus I have heard and read about before. I found the claim plausible but the evidence was not clearly reliable or complete, and I have tentatively put it in a class in my mind labeled "possible but speculative." There are a number of Africans who claim that the AIDS virus (which did indeed originate from Africa in its first known human infections) was designed to make Africa a ghost continent and therefore easier for outside fortune hunting businessmen to exploit the continent's vast resources.

I am a strong supporter of Barack Obama and agree that he must be seen to speak only for himself and not let Clinton or others try to make his friends or associates seem to be his designated spokespersons. Wright is entitled to his opinions but Obama must make clear that they belong to Wright and he does not need to be accountable for Wright's or Ayer's or anyone else's views, even if they may be Obama supporters themselves.

I realize Obama has to do some damage control on this, but....it bothers me that he is so "Appalled" at things Rev.Wright said, when I recognized most of that to be true! It appeared to me that most of his statements (Although he may have been having WAY too much fun saying them) were against this Administration, and the Old White Men power structure , 'NOT whites or "America" in general.(and as far as I'm concerned, the jury is still out on the AIDs thing: Like Wright, I wouldn't put even THAT past them, knowing what else they've been up to!)

Obama could have just said, that he couldn't agree with all Wright said, instead of completely trashing his very reality-based critique of what has been happening to this country under the Neocons.
This sounds to me like Obama's blaming Progressives for him not being what he's NOT: a Progressive!

I see Wrights comment of the last couple days as nothing but a ploy between Obama and Wright to separate and promote Obama from his pastor. It was just to convenient the way it all came out all of a sudden. Wright pumps everyone up with his rhetoric and Obama jumps right in condemning Wright. And then the commie media plays it off as the gospel truth. Have you ever been taken as a stupid fool?
