AMERICAblog: Obama hits McCain for opposing new GI Bill. McCain says GI Bill too generous, wants to help troops less.

  • Andrew A. Gill · 1 year ago
Did anyone else hear Obama's speech? There was one point which was incredibly amazing:

Just a few weeks ago, an 89-year-old World War II veteran from South Carolina told his family, "No matter what I apply for at the VA, they turn me down." The next day,

Now of course, we all know how this story ends. We've heard hundreds of stump speeches and we know how this works. The next day, Congress passes a bill which gives him part of what he wants. His family is saved, but can be saved even more if you vote for me.

The state of our union is strong, but we really could be doing a lot better, and look at what I did for y'all. Isn't that impressive?

Happy Furry Puppy Story Time with [Insert Candidate here]

he walked outside of an Outpatient Clinic in Greenville and took his own life.

    ...

    What did he say?

If you heard the audio, the crowd was shocked. And so was I.

Maybe Obama really will campaign on telling the people how it is, instead of sugar-coating it. I've never seen a viable candidate do that before. It will be a welcome change.

My heart goes out to the family of that solider, and my prayers go out to the soldier and everyone else who is in a similar situation.

It is good to see Obama acting like the nominee he is.

We all need to tune out the white noise from the Clinton/McCain campaign

Obama's statements are consistently on topic, articulate, unpandering and factually accurate.

    Hardly presidential at all.

John McCain never needed the GI Bill: he remarried rich and was treated in Vietnam's top hospital to mend him back to health.

Obama is going to be our next President.

I was in PS this weekend and I am still surprised how most of my gay male friends are still so pro-Hillary and anti-Obama. Yes, one guy told me he would vote for McCain if Hillary does not get the nomination.

As I read somewhere, John's not McSame. He is:

    McWORSE!

Why should you have to risk your life to get free education. Free post-secondary education for all should be the goal of any civilised nation.

    McCain hates the troops.

The original GI bill was enacted for WWII veterans and had benefits very similar to those found in the Webb bill. The purpose of the bill was not to encourage people to stay in the military. The bill was to provide a recognition of the service provided by the many men and women who sacrificed themselves on behalf of a grateful nation.

The GI bill provided college or trade education that created a disciplined and highly educated workforce that not only benefited the lives of our veterans but also helped drive the economic engine of our country. It more than paid for itself.

It is ironic that John McCain who received a free college education at the Naval academy wants to deny a free education to those who first place their lives on the line for a country. It is disheartening that a man who sees this war as important to the survival of this democracy as was WWII to deny those active duty, reservists and national guard members similar benefits as provided to those who served during WWII.

I have an employee who is in the national guard. He has served three tours in Iraq. He took a bullet through his leg. He has lost 50% of his hearing in one ear and 43% in the other. He was within two months of retiring with 20 years of service. Last week he received a stop loss order. How dare someone say that he is not entitled to the same consideration as an active duty member.

The bottom line is always money and not the welfare of our troops. As long as McCain is not suffering, he could care less about anyone else. What more do the voters need to read, see or hear to stop them from voting Republican?! Obama needs to keep hammering subjects just like this one and show who actually does care for the soldiers. McCain should be ashamed of himself.

I wish Obama would stop saying the bit about McCain being a hero and all the other nonsense. Yes, he honorably served his country, but he is not a war hero. It's plain and simple. McCain's airplane was shot down over Hanoi and he became a prisoner for a number of years. That is not the definition of an hero. An hero is one who does heroic things like saving a person's life, being wounded and under fire and inspite of that, not thinking of yourself but your crew and making sure they are safe regardless of your own health. ( This sounds a bit likeSen. Kerry when he went back and under enemy fire, picked up a stranded crewmate. Now this is what a war hero looks like and look what the republican swiftboaters did to him.) McCain is a Vietnam War Vet who was a POW. He is not an hero by a long shot. The word "hero" is used entirely too much in my opinion. Obama needs to quit preficing what he has to say about McCain with the "hero" stuff. ( It is starting to approach that loathsome metaphor Al Gore used about the "locked-box" for social security.)

Good point Butch1: Obama should pack up the statement. McCain is no War Hero. In fact, his name and status, with respect to his father, might be the only thing that kept him alive during captivity. I'm not saying that he didn't go through hell..but your point is well made.
  • blackwolf · 1 year ago
The bill is endorsed by both sides--yet McCain feels the benefits are too much?! How in the world can less benefits enhance retenton? Is McCain on crack? This country has a lot of spineless weenies. Every American should be mad as hell.

Let's see, McSame has a wife worth a few hundred million, a private jet, Senatorial salary, retired military salary and HE doesn't want anything too generous?

I'm so glad McSame isn't some elitist or something.

Don't forget McCain collects Social Security checks also.

Why does that elderly man hate our troops so much?
  • DCinDC · 1 year ago
I watched a CNN video report on this subject today. In the report CNN never told you the real gist of the opposing arguments. CNN just said that McCain offered a counter bill to the Democrat's GI Bill. CNN never bothered to mention that McCain's bill was less generous to military personnel or the fact that McCain opposed the Democrat's bill. CNN also never stated that Jim Webb was the author of the Democrat's GI Bill. I wonder why?
  • wmforr · 1 year ago
But McCain is right, the military has a real retention and enlistment problem. He should campaign on outsourcing more jobs and ruining the economy so that young people will have no choice but to enlist. That's a win-win for the future Iran war.

McCombover supports a 3 trillion dollar war but not even crumbs for the vets
  • PeteWa · 1 year ago
This is just typical treatment of the troops by the Republicans.
This is what they have been doing for decades, but like with everything else, they do one thing and then talk a good game, and the drooling idiots believe the words, and don't look at the actions.
Republican voters are knuckle dragging mouth breathers.

Isn't Sen. McCain also on "permanent disability" from his VN war injuries!? Amazing! "Support our troops" [[but not too much, I guess]]

There will undoubtedly be a compromise of four years service, rather than three, or six in the opposing camp.

Andrew, let me bring you up to speed. When you're sick and on VA or Medicare or Medicaid? Your chance of survival is zip because the procedures that can save you are severely rationed.

Your chance of survival is zip because the procedures that can save you are severely rationed.

I know. It's harsh reality, but I'm surprised that a presidential candidate thought enough of the electorate to speak to them like adults.

    I think it is Disqus.
Awful fucking thing it is. Not conversation friendly.

It is more like the MSM. Sound bites and no discourse to speak of.

The mechanics of the thing make it about as unfriendly as Hillary Clinton

I don't get what the problem is. Why don't people like it? It seems pretty straight forward to me. Granted, you have to log in, but is that the big complaint?
