AMERICAblog: Obama is giving Republicans southern heartburn

Obama is giving them mountain heartburn as well, trust me.
LOTS of early voters for Obama in MT. Oregon is of course Obama's West Virginia. It is going to be a very good day June 3rd. And they are working the phone banks heavily and encouraging early voting. As always, PERFECT.

And by the way
I am sick of the Hillary female supporters who act like Obama could not possibly represent older white women or white children.
WHAT? You think Obama didn't HAVE A MOTHER? You think Obama HATES CHILDREN? What? Are you friggin' CRAZY?

It will be interesting to watch the South rearrange itself. The white population is not the majority population in many of the southern states but has held on to power, fearful of not having their own way. That can change but not without considerable struggle. It isn't really about racial prejudice so much as it is about hanging onto power. Many already know perfectly well who their black or white cousins are and what degree of kinship they all share. It's going to be an interesting time. Those long ignored relationships are beginning to surface. After all, we might very well have one of Cheney's cousins in the White House next year. Won't that be a pretty dish to set before the world? One thing is always true of the United States, we are endlessly full of surprizes. :-)

I would love to see a Pixar animation short about the new, new South.
I'd watch my back around extended family real close. I always forget about the Cheney connection. Why do we have to be so incestuous?

You put your Irish American, German American, African American family reunion together and all you get is potato salad, baked ham, and endless chatter about Notre Dame's Fighting Irish. It's not worth, I tell ya!

Yes, there have been appeasers in the past, and the president is exactly right, and one of them is Neville Chamberlain. I believe that it's not an accident that our hostages came home from Iran when President Reagan was president of the United States. He didn't sit down in a negotiation with the religious extremists in Iran, he made it very clear that those hostages were coming home.

Neither Kerry nor Gore was exactly an energizer for black voters, so it should be an improvement this time out.

The most recognizeD... but oddly belittled... voting block of the primary was the "black vote" . It was just bizzare to to see the rational.. many drooled on and on about how Obama was only beating Hillary because he was black (the black vote) in one sentence, and then pretended that somehow the very voting block that essentailly lead him to the biggest upset in American Political History, somehow did not matter? It really was odd. Like somehow, black votes meant less, even though in many cases, they lead Obama to massive victories. This is America, and every vote counts.. and turnout within the black community is going to be massive this year.. it is not to be understated, shunned, or ignored. Embrace it. This is a huge part of our base.. and blacks are going to turn out in record numbers and change the landscape this fall- BET ON IT!
The Republicans wanted to get turn out by playing Rev Wright in Mississippi, and that is exactly what they got. Damn fools. Damn race baiting fools!
He didn't sit down in a negotiation with the religious extremists in Iran, he made it very clear that those hostages were coming home.

Iran was just looking for an excuse to unload them.
They were a wasting asset.
After a year, you either kill them or let them go.

And George Bush is a "religious extremist," so he can't really criticize anyone, including Iran.

Oh, Nooess!! The black people gonna vote this time!!!
Well, not unless they guard their right to vote like it was god's own son. The GOP is going to pull every trick in the book to take away your vote. People need to start breathing down the necks of county clerks now and not stop until the vote is counted.
Expect to see voting rolls purged of every common black name they can come up with on the premise that they were felons or sounded like felons. Then they are going to demand ID's at polling places, discard mail-in ballots and flat out shift vote counts.
Don't even think these people care one whit about what the law says. They will steal your vote if you let them.

This is something that needs to be addressed way ahead of time. This is where the Government should step in and oversee the process. If you can come up with an idea, count me in!

I am from Arkansas (town pop 336) and think you are underestimating how racist southern democrats are. The black population may come out in droves, but so will the people like my parents who have always voted democrat but wouldn't imagine voting for a black man. I truly think this will break the majority of the southern yellow dog democrats who aren't as yellow dog as they think. Also, what impact is the gay marriage ruling in California going to have on this election? It is going to rear its ugly head and the repugs are going to use it to counter a decent part of our voting block--they won't vote for a candidate who comes out in favor of gays in the south. They used it in the last election and they will do it again.

JC- No one is under estimating southern racism. There will be places like your home town in Arkansas where the demographic does not stack up well for Obama, but most of those places are red anyhow. The point is, in many "red" dristricts, all it will take is a five point swing to change the landscape, and having obama on the ballot makes Democrats competitive in places we have not been for decades. The Dean 50 state strategy is really starting to sink in now, and this could be a perfect storm for Republicans. Yeah, Ark we'll lose ARK and WV, but we will win VA, and might win NC and many other "red" States.
The Republican tactics that you describe above, are the very thing that got the blacks to turnout in Mississippi, and give the win to Childress. Sure, there will be some dirty tricks, and dirty deals, but there is going to be record turnout. You think there was participation in the primary? Wait until the general.
Note: MY DD seems to be getting behind Obama now. I think unity will be achieved. Especially when the voting block that is mad about Obama realizes what a McCain win will mean.

This run of Obama is good for America. It's time to readdress the issue of race in this country. Unfortunately, people like your parents will have to be brought on board...even if screaming and kicking. We have to change the way we do business in this country, and we need a candidate that represents "that" change.
Obama is that "concept" that has come along at just the right moment...his birthright...parents both white and black....his messge of change....his "Lincoln legacy" etc. It's a spiritual event:)

The most difficult task is how we are going to disassociate Obama from the whole "homosexual marriage" issue. The RNC is going to have a field day with direct mail pieces showing a photo of Obama and then a silhouette of two males engaging in intercourse. And certainly they will replay the whole "banning the Bible" meme.

That special election is Mississippi is a harbinger of the good things to come. Obama will pick up red states out west too.

I know this may sound weird....
but I think someone should tell people to ask for a vacation day on November 4th.
for all the people who have a difficult time voting on that day....they should start AKSING NOW to have November 4th off for a vacation day.

Yep, and this is an event whose time is come. Word is that the GOP has lost its brand. Untrue! It's the same old brand that America is finally coming to terms with.....and rejecting. The skuttle is now for individual GOP party members to run on the local issues that matter. Guess what!? It's been so long that they've all forgotten how to do that anymore.
The grass roots organizations that the Dems have put together will be ready to hit the ground running on day one of the November election. This is bottom-up politics, and something the GOP won't be able to field.

Even in Texas the races are close. CornNut, John Cornyn, is ripe and needs to be shucked. Help Rick Noriega give Cornyn a good shuckin' by donating to AMERICAblog candidates.

Let's restructue the way the south does business. I can't imagine why we allow the fate of America to hinge on the votes of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio etc. This is an old generation, with old ideas and ways of moving through the concouse of life.
Sooner or later we're going to have to revisit the issue of race in America.
