AMERICAblog: Obama on the pressing issue of "the dog"

  • Indigo · 1 year ago
It's important for mutts to stick together. ☺
  • AdmNaismith · 1 year ago
I like his 'mutt' comment. I've never perceived Obama as especially warm or self-deprecating.
He just needs to visit a rescue shelter of whatever breed best fits the kid's allergies. Rescue dogs never stop being grateful to their new masters.
  • Mum48 · 1 year ago
Unfortunately, the shelters I have visited over the past three or four months are filled mostly with dogs that are not hypoallergenic. As a matter of fact, most of the dogs available for adoption are pit bull mixes of one sort of another, and some of them are quite aggressive. I spent an hour-and-a-half at my local shelter today, trying to resist the cats (I have five) and getting information on volunteering (now that the campaign is over I have the time). The shelter is nearly twice as crowded as usual, due to the failing economy and the flooding we had in the area a couple of months ago. It would be great if they could adopt a shelter dog, but the realities of the situation will probably dictate a visit to a breeder or a specialty rescue operation.

    Digby has some good advice:

Our search for a replacement might not pass PETA litmus tests. For PETA, every animal purchased from a breeder represents a missed opportunity for a pooch on euthanasia row. But when you have a kid with allergies, it’s not as easy as “Let’s go to the Humane Society.”

We found plenty of options on the AKC’s list of hypoallergenic dogs. ...........Our final solution may offer the perfect political path for the Obamas. We put the word out with a group of pet rescuers that we were looking for a goldendoodle or Labradoodle.

Groups dedicated to rescuing mutts and specific breeds (the AKC maintains a list of breed rescue groups) match owners who are giving their animals away with families looking for a new pet.

shelter dogs (pound puppies) are the best! dogs are NOT domesticated animals like cattle and sheep. they co-evolved with humans over thousands of years. they are our fellow travelers. please don't eat them.

OT: I really hope someone is looking into the Alaska polling situation. Something is definitely wrong. http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2008/pr...

This is a pet (pun) issue of mine...responsible pet ownership. Neuter, spay your pets and above all, if you are ready for a pet or if you have a family member or friend that is looking for one, please, please consider a shelter.
A reputable shelter knows its animals, has given the animal a checkup and treated it for disease, observed its behavior, and can find a pet that matches you and your lifestyle perfectly. Shelter animals are the way to go.

Pet store animals are usually from puppy mills (or, even worse the back yard breeder whose trying to make a couple of extra bucks!) and are bred indiscriminately for pure profit. As a result, these animals are often sick and suffer physical ailments from overbreeding.

And make sure you are ready for a pet. Pets are a commitment, not an accessory.

And oh, I've rescued feral cats from my back yard - yes, it is possible and not difficult at all. They are the kindest, sweetest, most well behaved little furballs. I love them dearly.

I think it's great that they are considering getting a rescued dog.
Ours came from a "No Kill" shelter, a little bitty 150 pound lab/newfie mix that's the size of a small pony and thinks he's a lap dog. Couldn't ask for a better friend.

My dog has never stopped being grateful...and I've never stopped being grateful for having him in my life. I just love the little guy.

Bush's dog bit a reporter today. Can't remember which network he was from.,,
  • Ben Dover · 1 year ago
His being raised by a neo-con explains why he's a biter.
  • pluky · 1 year ago
Check out the video. Barney was clearly not in the mood for all the commotion. If his handler was paying attention, and had a clue, either Barney would have been out of there, or the reporters would have been told to back off.
  • Mum48 · 1 year ago
I agree with you. Barney's ears were back, his tail was not wagging, and he was not exhibiting a welcoming posture. And, actually, the Reuter's reporter almost asked to be bitten in the way he approached the dog, thrusting his hand in Barney's face. All in all, it seemed like there were some stupid people on the scene who weren't picking up Barney's vibes.

Did anyone notice that Obama stated it was a big issue on the website when talking about the dog? That was the part that was important- he still is reading the comments or getting updated on what we are saying.

    dogs are pretty awesome.

I'm sure all the animal shelters out there are looking through their huddled masses for their most hypoallergenic mutts as we type! I hope the family is able to rescue one.... I LOVE LOVE LOVE my rescued mutt.... and he loves me. Obama has a whole country to save and a nation grateful for his desire to serve. It would be fitting for the First Kids to reach out and save one of our four legged friends.

Most people in the US are "mutts" of different ethnic groups - where's the T-shirt? "I'm a MUTT!"
  • unrepentant_expat · 1 year ago
" a mutt"... that's one way of looking at it, but I prefer to see it as an elite hybrid.
  • moreleesafer · 1 year ago
    i love it! "elite hybrid"

Oh!!! I had a black cocker from when she was a 10 week old pup until one night, 3 months shy of 15 years, she took her usual after dinner nap, and didn't wake up. Bless your heart, and Boomer's too.
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
    Yay, BOOMER!

Would someone over at MSNBC please put a muzzle on Mika Brzezinski and her crush obsession with Sarah Palin? Damn, I'm tired of Mika trying to prop that idiot up as some indication of her supposed "balance." Mika, for g-d's sake, get off the whole Sarah Palin is a fabulous politician crap, and I want her as Alaska's Senator crap!

I have 3 dogs, 2 of whom live inside (rat terrier & a mostly chihuahua mutt) and I suffer from some allergies, but frankly, I live with it because I'd never give them up. They're invaluable companions, like my children.

Meanwhile, Franklin Graham says his father wants to meet Obama and pray with him. Cheeezus. If people just knew how much Graham was hated in this area...he did nothing for people here, just did all he could to promote himself and find out how many presidents he could influence.

And he didn't do anything for me when the Secret Service almost arrested me for carrying a sign against Nixon when he was in Charlotte to "pay homage" to Graham. Those people are sickening--it's all about keeping people ignorant and compliant. I'll be glad when we truly have a secular govt but it might not happen before I die.

Who's the "pariah" dog? The one who lives outside? How is he going to make it thru this unusually cold winter? Is he a "conservative" dog; or, one you just choose to punish randomly?
  • monopole · 1 year ago
    Yeah! Mutts are the best!
  • iamwil · 1 year ago
    It shouldn't mutter, should it?
  • Rab · 1 year ago
I had a rat terrier /chihuahua and he was great. Kinda like a decaf-chihuahua.
  • JoyceH · 1 year ago
Does anyone know where on the transition website you can post dog recommendations? I just learned that MY breed, the Samoyed, is hypoallergenic, and want to go sing their praises.
  • moreleesafer · 1 year ago
yep, they can check rescue organizations that specialize in non-allergic breeds like poodles or Bichons. I am allergic to dogs but have no problem with my current terrier mix mutt and I didn't when I had Westies.

He is not a guy that makes quick and crazy decisions so they are going to be taking their time.
I am really happy that he is continuing to listen to us. we are his bosses afterall. He gets it.
