AMERICAblog: Obama, Pelosi will meet Monday to plot strategy for the stimulus

  • existenz · 11 months ago
If there are only 57 Democrats in the Senate, then it would only take 59 votes to overcome a filibuster. And will Republicans really block a stimulus bill? I'd love to see that.
  • RevDrBillyBob · 11 months ago
Pelosi is a Bush loyalist. Gee ... I wonder what she "thinks".
  • Butch1 · 11 months ago
I wonder where her loyalty will lay once Bush and his cohorts are gone? Perhaps, she will start representing the democrats for a change.
  • triple7s · 11 months ago
That seems just TOO much to hope for.
  • Butch1 · 11 months ago
Who knows, she may surprise us with a new act and a brace for her spine.
  • RainbowPhoenix · 11 months ago
She has no spine, but I suspect she'll be loyal to whoever's in power. Now that it's a democrat, we may be able to use her.
  • Butch1 · 11 months ago
No question she's an invertebrate, but speaking of obstructionists, she has stood in the way of impeaching Bush and Cheney and I would expect that from a republican but not a democrat. Her explanations why are rubbish, in my opinion.
  • RainbowPhoenix · 11 months ago
I think you missed my point. She helped the republicans because one of them was still in the white house. Now that we have a democrat in the white house and most of the senate, her complete lack of a spine will work in our favor.
  • Butch1 · 11 months ago
I must be dense this evening; how so?
  • RainbowPhoenix · 11 months ago
She couldn't stand up to the previous administration. How could she stand up to this one?
  • Butch1 · 11 months ago
Both Pelosi and Reid are spineless when it comes to standing up to republicans. They only grow spines when they can attack other democrats. I have often wondered just which party they represent? They are always, trying to be bipartisan with the Republicans when Democrats are in charge, and they kow-tow completely when Republican are in charge. The Republicans, when in charge, just ignore the Democrats and punish them. When the shoe is on the other foot, the Democrats try and find ways to please the Republicans. I'm a bit tired of "turn the other cheek" and " let's all forget about how we were treated by the Republicans, let's just move forward." I don't know about you, but for once in eight years of this, I would like to get my pound of flesh. I don't want to forget about what has happened to us and I want our leaders to hold the people responsible for breaking the laws and creating this mess prosecuted. It isn't going to happen as long as Pelosi and Reid are leading the Democratic majorities in Congress. Even Obama doesn't seem at all concerned about what has happened. Is it just me?
  • RainbowPhoenix · 11 months ago
It's not just you. Within the first year, people will start seeing how much control the republicans still have and will get pissed. That will be our chance to force the democrats to do something.
  • Butch1 · 11 months ago
I hope you're right. It would be such a waste having everything in place and then watching our weak knee leaders mess it up again and again. They need to stop the consensus business and just start leading whether the republicans like it or not. They've had their day now it is time for them to step aside and stop obstructing what the Democrats want to do to fix their mess.
  • Bostonian_Queer_in_Dallas · 11 months ago
The worse part is that the only GOP left have horrid drawls and we'll have to listen to that if we lower ourselves to watch MSM news shows, which I will not. Between Cornyn and McConnell and all the other uppity southern white trash...yes if you can say uppity Negro then I shall refer to you for what you are...uppity white trash...it will be like sugar mouths driveling out whatever they can to block Dems from really recovering from Dubbya....I reckon.
  • Butch1 · 11 months ago
Democrats need to point out who the persons are and what party they represent when they start obstructing the bills presented each and every time they vote on something or try and filibuster, regardless of whether they are republican or blue dog democrats.( identical, in my opinion )

Exposing them to public ridicule is the best way to show the citizens of this country who is on board to help and who is wasting everyone's time by continuing to play games with the economy for political points.
  • HarpoSnarx · 11 months ago
"Mister Prez Elect, we MUST give the GOP SOMETHING!"
  • Butch1 · 11 months ago
A lump of coal and a stick come to mind. "They've been very, very, bad boys and girls."
  • Winston Smith · 11 months ago
". . .it begs the question of whether the GOP Senators are prepared to filibuster the economic stimulus package when the economy is on the brink of collapse."

I am sure the Republicans will filibuster the stimulus package. They would be overjoyed if the economy collapsed completely under Obama. They could then blame the collapse on the Democrats.

I am just as sure that the so-called mainstream press will report this as a failure of the Dems to pass it rather than Republican obstructionism that it is.
  • JD_Rhoades · 11 months ago
This is the wrong fight for Republicans to pick. But they may just be that stupid.
  • Steve_in_CNJ · 11 months ago
A series of filibusters during Obama's first 6 months might teach the new president to finally take a stand on something and fight for it. It will be fascinating to see how long it takes him to realize he's been reaching out to the wrong people.
  • Steve_in_CNJ · 11 months ago
    Joe,

Please read this concerning the phrase "beg the question":
    http://begthequestion.info/

It's important to get this right because the concept of begging the question becomes harder to convey when the phrase is co-opted to mean "raise the question".

BS Stimulous is utter shite...A Bankrupt government priniting more money... seriously. the last few stimulous did squat. Its not the frickin answer. never was, never will be.

    its an example of scam.

cash today does nothing to fix the failure of our economic system. put people to work. more massive public projects. thats a seriously much better proposal than giving people a few hundred dollars. they know it too. so sick of the corruption and purposeful failed leadership
  • Patrick_Bateman · 11 months ago
O could "stimulate" me by showing Pelosi the door.
  • GoBlue · 11 months ago
Pay people unemployment benefits, food stamps, etc., and they will increase the deficit. Put people to work and they will pay income taxes, which will chip away at the deficit. What part of this do the Rethugs and the Blue Dog Dems not understand?
  • Jay Randal · 11 months ago
If Nancy Pelosi is truly involved, then the stimulus plan would be filled with pork for Wall Street and cake crumbs for Main Streets. Pelosi is a member of the wealthy elite and unfortunately Obama acts like an elite wannabe.
  • wearing out my F key · 11 months ago
get the chips and dip ready, because this is going to be hilarious, assuming you find wasting billions of dollars on nothing funny.
  • Rab · 11 months ago
Were you eating chips and dip when they shoveled billions to the bankers? That was wasting money on nothing.
  • wearing out my F key · 11 months ago
no, i was bitching my head off when that one went down, but to no avail. yes, billions wasted. and where is the over site?
"we need that money to prop up mortgages!"
    "ok, here."
    two weeks later~
"how's it going with the mortgages?"
"wha? oh, that... yeah, decided to just give that money away. that was the best thing, yeah"
  • paulbot5 · 11 months ago
stimulus = inflation, how do u help us poor people with more inflation
  • wearing out my F key · 11 months ago
congress doesn't get started until next week, but you already know how this is going to go down: the bill will be stuffed with pork than a meatlover's pizza, most, if not all the money will get funneled to the well connected, there will be no oversight whatsoever, and the only one who will even bother reading the damn thing will be dennis kucinich.
  • ARP · 11 months ago
That's exactly right. Then the Republicans will have an easy excuse to fillibuster and the people will think its politics as usual.
  • wearing out my F key · 11 months ago
hey, didn't we have $700 billion laying around here someplace? anyone know where that went?
  • Indigo · 11 months ago
    And so it begins . . .
  • triple7s · 11 months ago
What about the TWO TRILLION DOLLARS unaccounted for at the Fed Reserve? The reporters filed a freedom of info request, and the Fed say NO, we won't tell where it went. Has there been any more about this?
  • gizmo · 11 months ago
The stimulus bill will pass, but only after Obama promises funding for a Cale Yarborough museum in North Carolina, a Webb Pierce museum in Tennessee, a David Duke museum in Louisiana, a Strom Thurmond museum inSouth Carolina, a G.W. Bush airport in Texas, and a Bear Bryant museum in Alabama. Then the good ol' boys from the GOP will get on board, and will be photographed with shit-eating grins, standing next to Obama in the Oval Office as he signs the bill into law.
  • kevinsf · 11 months ago
Obama says; I need to throw more gays under the bus to get this economy moving. Nancy says; I have a crap load in my district and I love to play like they don’t exist. Come and get all of them, I need more money.
  • dula · 11 months ago
The Dems let all the filthy Neocon trash raid the Treasury on their way out of Office. The Neocons didn't need to win another election, they got everything they ever wanted except privatizing Social Security. Thanks to the Market, that dream is over for now. They can enjoy the next 8 years off on luxurious holiday on our dime. The only way to get our money back is to tax the hell out of the corporate world and/or the rich. I don't think Obama has the interest or the courage for justice.
  • shell · 11 months ago
It never ceases to amaze me. So many Americans act totally like children -- yes, mostly politicians, and almost all the Republicans. (But don't leave the Democrats out. Cowardly wimps -- remember, LIEberman has his way with them.)

Just step back and look at this. The GOP had their tail handed to them in 2006. They never changed. They had their tail handed to them AGAIN in 2008. A mentally healthy person would have said, in 2006, "We messed up obviously. Let's change." They didn't then, they're not now.

No one says it, but this is insane. Ruining the country so their political party "wins."

No matter how hard the Democratic activists and the web acts, the Congress doesn't change. What will it take?????
  • paulbe · 11 months ago
I'll consider it real when I see security officers escort Rahm Emanual straight on to the next plane back to Israel.
  • cab02149 · 11 months ago
The stimulus has boondoggle written all over it if not audited skillfully, spent precisely, the finished projects skillfully designed and fabricated. With our history and corrupt habits this money will turn into shit. Politics aside of course.

    Inauguration Day Rally for Burris:

If Reid wants to play games, so be it

There will be thousands of African-Americans in Washington that day to celebrate the swearing in of President-Elect Barack Obama.

This would be a "radioactive" situation...

And, if I were Barack Obama, I would ever so quietly pass the word to those white Democratic Party U.S. Senators to make sure than Burris was sworn in before my day in the international sun.

The alternative would be the danger of Burris being a big story on January 20, 2009.

If they want to play games.. bring it on, he was appointed legally, and is a good man. The Jerk that appointed him will be gone soon... we can not wait.
  • timncguy · 10 months ago
Obama has already made a public statement to support Reid in his effort to not seat Burris.
  • DevilDog · 10 months ago
I guess we'll soon find out if Susan Collins, Olympia Snow and the other so-called GOP moderates in the senate are going to fall in line with their leadership or do the right thing.
  • timncguy · 10 months ago
This talk of 60 dem senators making it easy to stop filibusters with the "magic" number completely ignores the fact that you can't get 60 dems to agree on anything. Too many ofthe current dem senators are conservative in nature to think that getting to 60 would mean anything.
