It took me a long time to "warm up" to Obama, I'll admit. But at this point he really seems like a genuine old-fashioned kind of decent-- the kind of person with internal courage and real grace. I see a bit of what America used to be in him. That said, um, no, the world is not looking to the States to lead anything. The world is looking to the States to bring its unique gifts to the global table and to stop with the predatory behaviour. If what Obama expresses is really true then I think he can deliver that. But let's not set him up by exhalting him unreasonably high. He may be a good man, but he's just a man. And the U.S. might be a great country but it's not the only country that counts. This "leaders of the free world" just isn't true any more.
vkobaya

This "leaders of the free world" just isn't true any more.
And we can thank the Oval Office Dimbutt-in-Chief for that. Even if Obama is our president and is everything we hope, I seriously doubt the other world leaders would ever again trust this nation and our president to be the "Leader of the Free World." They could not. I would have to seriously question their judgment if they did. Especially, considering the possiblity that the Republicans might run Sarah Palin in 2012 ... though I find that a very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very remote possibility. Unfortunately, if any Republican ever manages to again sit in the Oval Office, the other free nations of the world would remember the catastrophe of the Bush years.
The only catastrophe Bush has not gifted us with is a global nuclear war ... knock on wood. He won't be out of office until January 20, 2009, plenty of time especially considering the warmongering nitwit’s aggressive war crimes against Syria the other day.

Yeah, the Bush regime basically blew America's rep internationally. Iraq was really the last straw. Looking at it from a strictly international perspective-- the U.S. invaded a sovereign nation without direct provocation or immediate threat to its people. Such a bad thing to do. I doubt people/leaders in other countries are ever going to let go of that one. It created really deep mistrust. On top of that, while the Bush regime was distracting the American people with Iraq what you may not have noticed is that other world leaders managed to go about global business without American leadership-- so other countries learned that life does go on without America. That one may be insurmountable. I mean, how do you go back from that?

I don't think so. He is foremost a politician and at that a so-called moderate ... {sigh} a corporatist moderate. I hope he will try to fix the Bush problems, but serious doubt that he has any intention of doing so. The crisis facing this nation is on the order of the 1930s Depression and I hope that he will be forced to act as FDR was unwillingly forced to act. Otherwise, his legacy will as unfavorable as Herbert Hoover, who really was far more progressive than Roosevelt ever intended to be. Roosevelt was of course, a brilliant man and flexible enough to do what he saw needed to be done. Obama is another extremely intelligent man and I hope the catastrophic wrecjage left by the Bush administartion will force his hand to be as progressve as FDR had to be.
8nando

You know, I have to agree with you on many points, even though he doesn't sound as corporatist as anyone else around - save Kucinich.
My biggest fear about this guy so far, however, is that he is TOO nice. It seems that at he is at his worst when he is unsure about something so he starts listening to everyone around him, fishing for answers he hasn't quite figured out himself.
I had this feeling when Sarah Palin first appeared in the picture and his campaign seemed to be running after her. It seemed that it was in disarray and that suddenly not the Obama people were running the campaign (the same way they had run their brilliant nomination one) but hangers-on, people just off the street. Of course, then, the financial meltdown happened and his winning abilities came again to the forth. His determination, his cool hand, his belief in basic decency.
I believe he is at his best when things get tough and he goes into his signature logical-but-with-a-touch-of-emotional behavior. Then, he really shines.
Anyway, I thought it was brilliant that he actually said in his "infomercial" that "I'm not a perfect man and I'm not going to be a perfect president". Who would do that in an advertisement? Who would deflate his own myth? Who would come out and say: "Now, folks, I'm not that angelic a person." That's my biggest hope for this person. His apparent belief in his own fallibility. After almost twenty years of presidents that were ALWAYS right, (I think Jimmy Carter was the last one not to possess that infuriating character trait) this is a more-than-welcome change.
But I do hope he picks the right people to surround himself and listen to their opinions, as he tackles one of the worst trainwrecks in history...

What is even more wonderful was that he never said anything negative about John McCain in the 30 minutes. While if it was a McCain 30 minute ad it would anti Obama most of the time. McCain has no vision where Obama told us his dream of returning America to it's greatness. I look happily to the future leadership of President Barack Obama!

It was a mellow and warm and moving deal closer. The only thing I feel he missed was this: in his litany of "little people" he wants to represent, he has overlooked the self-employed and small business people, who tend towards the libertarian and John McCain. These people are hurting so badly right now, that it is a national tragedy. They can't get inventory loans. There are numerous small carpenters, builders, electricians and plumbers across this country whose business has come to a standstill. And the small supply businesses, usually family businesses, that supply them are like ghost towns. Fishermen can't afford to go out to sea right now because they can't sell their lobsters. The computer stores that sold Macs to fishermen and organic farmers and contractors are going under. And so on and so on, right down Main Street. These people don't get unemployment. They get nothing. The economics of the Bush administration have been grotesquely skewed towards aid for the multinational, with nothing but nothing for the small entrepreneur. Obama needs to reach out to them.

He specifically said he's create small business loans to help the small businesses he knew were hurting so badly--it was before he launched into the who he would not help, like the big oil companies and the CEOs.... He did not address single people at all, with his all-consuming emphasis on families, esp those with men who are hourly workers.... My guess it is their vote he still needs? That professional people, college grads, single people, we are already voting for him! It's the others who are too busy with jolbs and kids to read the blogs and talk to political friends, and were mislead by the Repugs for years (closing their minds to anything not from their churches), still needing to hear Obama's words.

Yes! I thought it was mellow, warm, fuzzy and sentimental. I still see nothing of fixing the real problems left by Bush, FISA, the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, the giveaway bailout to Wall Street, and so much, much more. Yet I cried and was inspired. He is an exceedingly potently charismatic leader who probably could lead us even further down the road to ruin. No, I don't believe that he will. I am still suspicious of him, but don't find the evil, the darkness in him that reeked out of Bush and Cheney. Simply that he isn't an archangel, angel or even a cherub. He is a very inspirational leader and God be with him that he doesn't disappoint even my small expectations.

I would like to know though about the really nasty stories I hear about McCain. I'm talking about his years at Annapolis, not only graduating 894 out of his class of 900, but being a hedonistic, drunken, loser of the Bush Fratboy type, that he crashed those planes out of not only negligence but disobeying orders, that he may have contributed to Forestal fire, that after he returned from Vietnam, instead of following another POW to a spring break at a major airbase to learn, went to Rio so he could get layed, and now that he was probably involved in a covered up DUI auto accident that resulted in the death of another. These stories resembles the vicious smears that the Republicans circulate about Obama and which I find absurd. I am far more inclined to believe the stories about McCain, but have to say that it may be just my partisanship. However, another point is that even if these stories are our sides crap, the filth put out by McCain comes from far closer to the heart of that campaign than these stories about McCain's failings.

Felt the same way when I saw JFK speak. The bitterness and hatred will rain on him tomorrow, but anyone who actually listened tonite should be moved to give him a chance. McCain/Palin only have hatred and divisiveness to offer. They have no real solutions, no real policies, no knowledge of economics, no real connection to the average American they are what all the Republicans are a sham. These are not people who want to accomplish anything, who dream of a better country, who believe all Americans should have a chance to better themselves. I am especially struck that I see not a single element in Obama that exhibits greed, avarice or hatred. This is a man who is truly connected to his family and to extending his hand to help someone else up. This is the America the Democrats represent. The America where we can swallow our differences, we can believe that skin color doesn't matter, we can reach out to our enemies and make them see that hatred and aggression will solve little. This is the America that our founding fathers believed in. We need to do everything in our power to give Obama a chance to make some changes. We need to be prepared to understand when he falls short, but recognize that he tried and will get up and try again. This is how we change this country and yes it might take 20 years to reverse what the Republicans have shoved down the country's throat but change it we will. I am a product of the 60's, you know flower power, stop the war in Vietnam, love your neighbor. The whole movement was derailed because we started to believe that greed and personal possessions were the way to become happy. True happiness comes from listening to someone inspire you. We all had a teacher in high school or college who touched us and Obama has the ability to reach out and touch something kind and good in all of us. Let's make sure he is elected on Tuesday, we deserve to have some happy years regardless of how hard the work will be.
