AMERICAblog: Obama will issue executive order, first week in office, to close Gitmo

  • SCLiberal · 10 months ago
In closing Gitmo will we also close up shop in Cuba and give their land back to them?
  • TR_Baer · 10 months ago
Well, personally, I think it's a reason to think some of that hype might have been for real. Is it okay to believe in something or someone, every once in a while?

One mistake on the road to healing. Umpteen to go.

OT, however, I actually watched THE VIEW this morning just to watch Ann Coulter 'live'. Man oh man, besides giving me the creeps, she was dissing her gracious hostess Barbara Walters by claiming the way Barbara was reading from her (ACs) new book was akin to reading from 'Mein Kampf'. The most interesting event was the fact that AC did not return after her first segment as she was scheduled. They had a pre-taped segment on the studio makeover instead. Something happened during the break and dangit I want to know what it was! If anyone knows please post. I have a feeling Ms. Walters asked Coulter to hit the highway.

AC probably didn't know or realize BW a Jew.

Do NOT fuck with Barbara Walters! (ask Rosie or Star).

I'm with Romero: issuing an Executive Order is the easy part; now let's see what he does to make it happen.

The remaining 250+ detainees, if they are still sane enough to try, should be tried with evidence not obtained through torture. If, after 7 years, the evidence is not sufficient to convict, they should be deported to their native country.

    It's not rocket science.

It's a start and a start only. He's going to have to do a helluva lot more than this before he starts to impress me. Don't forget, recently Obama began back-pedaling from closing Gitmo, saying that it's a complex and trickier than it sounds, things we just didn't hear from his campaign.

I agree with you, John. But wow! Did you ever think you would have to report that Barack Obama was reaching out to the Left?

Give Obama a chance on this. Many countries are refusing to accept these prisoners home. After 7 years, many have no place to go, even though they're innocent. Remember, the US govt was actually paying people to turn others in, and money changed hands rapidly in the case of not just a few of these prisoners.

And there's no hope for the ones who suicided out of Guantanamo Bay, either. Will their families be compensated in some way? Will the ones who survived and have no charges or evidence against them be compensated? Is there any way for the innocent to regain 7 years of their lives?

Will any of them ever see the US in a better light? Or have some been turned into something they weren't to begin with?

    Goddamn George Bush.

    Good start....
When is the order to get us the HECK OUT OF IRAQ !!!

My husband is scheduled to make a second tour and we're NOT happy about it!!
  • caphillprof · 10 months ago
There was a progressive poll that showed Guantanamo to be the overwhelming choice of progressives of what had to be done and soon. Team Obama may be waking up to their need to maintain their base. Those wingnut Republicans did not vote for him and won't.

are you serious?? the prisoners in Gitmo give each other classes on how to make IED's in thier tents. the soldiers that work Gitmo have found these home made devices and (very large) instruction manuals in the prisoners quarters. These people have no place to go and no other country wants to take them in, not even their own country...so where does that leave them? America maybe. One of the reply's I read talked about how all of these people are innocent because they haven't been proven guilty in a trial... yeah not ALL of them may be known terrorists but the ones that weren't are now disgruntled and will be after they have been locked up for 7 years with good instructors.

Some people don't think about the big picture and what really goes on down there. Before you make some remarks about Gitmo you should read a few books about it that have been written by soldiers that were there.

If Obama does this, and I hope he does, it will send a very strong message to the world. It will say "America is back", and we are turning our back on the policies of the Bush regime.

Right after Obama won, Rahm was asked about the priorities and he said that Obama would do what he said he was going to do. Closing Gitmo was one of those things. I don't see this one as a left-right issue, after all Secretary Gates has wanted to close it down for years.

Still this is good news. I assume that after Obama issues the executive order that most of the prisoners will be allowed some kind of legal representation or contact with representatives from their home countries.

I'd say keep Guantanamo open for two very deserving prisoners, but that would leave open a very vile crime. No close it now and abolish this evil. When the time is right, we can reopen it and send Bush and Cheney to Guantanamo, then have our marines pull out of Cuba.

will this be before or after he launches the war crimes tribunal on the bush crime family and their enablers, pelosi and ried???
  • Gman · 10 months ago
Did you ever consider that perhaps he's doing this becausehe thinks it's the right thing to do?

Move the Gitmo prison to a soon-to-be available ranch in Crawford Texas.
  • john · 10 months ago
he should close Gitmo because the men there are POWS and have not rights as American citizens. If they are released do you really believe they would not go back to thier old habits etc. plotting to destroy the USA.
