The "Second Amendment Family Gun Shop". Seriously?

I spotted (and photographed) the 'Christian Soldier' gun shop in Baltimore years ago. It's been a neverending source of amusement since.
Now I used to shoot competitively and hunt and have a bunch of rifles and shotguns of various descriptions. But I'm not rushing out rushing out ahead of the 'gun grabbers.' Haha!
It is the busy seasson right now ahead of the local deer season so there may be some more sales than usual but still...

I just heard this "Obama is going to ban all guns" nonsense an hour ago when my husband (at least up until Prop 8 was passed) and I were at lunch at a favorite Mexican place here in SoCal. A guy at the next table started spouting this, telling his wife that the ban was foreshadowed when Obama talked about people in small towns being bitter and clinging to God and guns. Now that he was elected, he was going to take away both, starting with the guns. I started laughing out loud - to many kicks under the table.
The guy quieted down for a while and then started in on how Obama was next going to re-instate the Fairness Doctrine, which was described as "something Clinton put into place to silence conservative voices. I've heard all about it from Hannity and Savage." I started laughing again, and was getting up (former journalist that I am) to point out to this moron that the Fairness Doctrine dates back to the late 40s - not the early 90s. But my spouse convinced me that I'd be wasting my breath, so I only laughed as this guy got even more frothy and more wound up. He's probably suffering now. Big helpings of wingnut angst and refried beans probably don't sit well together.
Fear is like a drug for these people; they simply cannot live without it. And the RW noise machine employs very well-paid pushers who get rich scaring the pants off theses weak-minded people, convincing them that Muslims are going to break into their homes, steal their wealth to redistribute, take their guns, and force their children into gay marriages. Spreading fear has gone from being a right wing cottage industry in the 70s to being a well-oiled (and oily) corporate machine that's turned Hannity, Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Savage and Coulter into very rich men.
As Mencken said, No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people.

A little knowledge about guns so you don't look uninformed to the gun-owning public (yes, I am a gun owner, woman, M.A. in History, life-long Democrat, I am not an NRA member and not a hunter; I used to punch holes in paper).
1. A fully-automatic gun means that one puts a cartridge (bullet is what the gun expels, case is what the gun ejects, primer is what ignites the gun powder in the cartridge) in the chamber ("cocks the gun"), then squeezes the trigger, the weapon will fire until the magazine (container that holds the cartridges) is empty. With a few exceptions (full-auto collectors licenses that are very hard to get), it is illegal for the public to own fully-automatic weapons. The military, national guard and some Police Departments (and probably Homeland Security, but they won't say) may use fully-automatic weapons.
1a. There are kits (illegal to sell, illegal to buy, illegal to use) that sometime can modify some weapons to fully-automatic. They are difficult to get and often do not work.
2. Semi-automatic weapons means that when one puts a cartridge in the chamber ("cocks the gun"), then squeezes the trigger, a round is fired. The shooter must squeeze the trigger again to fire the weapon. The 'semi-automatic' part is that the weapon automatically load the next cartridge into the chamber until the magazine is empty.
2a. Similarly, a double-action revolver is equivalent to 'semi-automatic.' With some double-action revolver, the shooter must retract the hammer, then fire. Mechanical action rotates the cylinder so the next cartridge is available.
2b. 'Bolt-action' means that the shooter must manually accentuate a bolt (lever either on the side of the weapon or under the weapon) to load the next cartridge. The weapon does have a magazine where the cartridges are stored.
2c. Single-action (most commonly on revolvers) means the shooter must 'cock the hammer' before squeezing the trigger to fire a bullet. Then the shooter must 'cock the hammer' again to fire the next bullet. There is a very simple technique one can learn to fire a single-action weapon as quickly as a double-action weapon. The technique does take two hands, but only about 2 minutes to master.
3. A 'military looking' weapon is no more deadly than a 'hunting looking (wood stock or camo synthetic stock) weapon. The 'look' is to sell to the macho crowd.
4. The caliber of the weapon is (excluding shotguns) the diameter of the bullet in inches or millimeters. So a .22-caliber is .02 less than the diameter of a 1/4 inch. A .45 caliber is .5 less than 1/2". a 9mm is (yes) 9 mm in diameter. Generally, the larger the caliber, the more damage will be inflicted on the target.
4a. Calibers have been developed for specific situations. In the US, the 30-06 hunting rifle ('30' is the caliber of the bullet, '06' was the year the cartridge was introduced) became popular after the 30-06 cartridge was used in WWI by US soldiers. In the 1950s, when more women took up hunting, the 30-06 was too hard to handle. So the case was modified to the .270 (bullet diameter is now .27") which allowed a little less 'kick' but still had enough knock-down power.
4b. Many Police departments are limited as to the caliber of handgun they may carry. Most often it is a 9mm or .357. They are also issued ammunition that limits, to some degree, the damage caused by the bullet.
5. Magazine capacity is one of the big concerns of the gun crowd. The more cartridges the weapon holds, the longer one can shoot with out reloading. Prior to the Bradly bill, magazine capacity for many semi-automatic handguns was 15 to 20 rounds. The Brady bill limited the magazine capacity to 10 rounds. The Bill also requires a background check on the purchaser. The purchaser pays for the background check.
5a. The 'Gun Show' (or private sale) loophole was not closed by the Brady Bill. What this means is that if a private party walked around the gun show or was outside in the parking lot selling his/her personal weapons, there was no background check. The official gun dealers at the gun show had to perform a background check. This loophole has been closed in many states (Colorado being one), but I am not sure if it is closed in all 50 states.
5b. Local newspapers, for fear of legal liability, stopped carrying private advertisements for the sale of firearms.
5c. Most Police departments support the restriction of larger capacity magazines and some types of ammunition that present an undue hazard to the Police. The National Police Union did (and does) fully support the passage of the Brady Bill.
6. Another issue is legal concealed carry. This means that a private citizen goes through a process to legally carry a concealed firearm during their daily activities. Specifically, in Colorado a person must apply at the local sheriff's department, submit to a background check and fingerprinting, successfully pass a conceal carry class (class costs between $60 to $150 and includes live shooting), pay the fees ($100) and then are issued a 5 year permit. Conceal carry is not legally allowed at schools, gov't facilities, other places where metal detectors screen people for contraband. Business may post a sign that firearms are not allowed inside if they do not wish to have weapons in their premises.
6a. Here in Colorado, we have had the conceal-carry law since 2003 and there have not been many incidents (I am covering my a** since I don't remember any big shoot-out or failure of the law). The law was instituted because prior, Sheriff's had the sole right to determine who could and could not legally conceal carry. So legally conceal carry turned into if you were good friends with the Sheriff or if the Sheriff felt citizens should conceal carry.
6b. There is no way to prevent someone from illegally conceal carrying. If someone wants to carry a weapon, they have the ability to do so.
7. The argument on the Second Amendment come because of a comma (very simplified explanation). The question raised is whether our founding fathers meant for those IN a public militia to have weapons for the defense of the country OR if they meant for citizens to have weapons for the defense of the country who could join the militia if needed. The Supreme Court has overall consistently (again, great simplification) held that private citizens have the right to own firearms for personal protection and that the firearms may not be confiscated.
7a. My personal opinion (if you have survived long enough to read this post). Again, it is balance. The weapons in 1776 were single-shot, inaccurate, often did not fire, were all handmade so parts were not interchangeable (each screw had to go back into its own hole - could not mix up the screws!), and were mainly used for hunting for food. Women were often given the job of heating the lead to cast the balls the weapons fired. Our founding fathers never anticipated the growth in the accuracy, ease of use and availability of weapons. Just as freedom of speech does not allow one to scream 'FIRE' in a crowed theater and cause panic, basic firearm restrictions (i.e., limits of possession at schools, etc.) seem level-headed to me. I do not support a national registration of firearms as I believe this would be ruled unconstitutional. Further, there are soooo many firearms in the U.S. (estimates vary but 235,000,000 seems to be credible).
7n. There is not really much you can do to help these scary-cats calm down. I notice they did not bitch when Bush removed the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878 that prevented US troops from being used against US citizens as determined by the Commander and Chief. With the removal of Posse Comitatus, the Second Amendment become null and void. No group of citizens has as much firepower as a squad of US troops. These people just live in fear and all we can do is remain calm and educate ourselves (which is why I took so much time to write this post) so when we do talk with them, we can speak accurately and perhaps help calm their fears.

Well covered, except for one aspect, OPEN CARRY, where you can just walk around in public with a firearm out in the open. This is legal in Idaho, and I suppose, other states. Many gun nuts really love it, arguing the deterrent effect of the weapon being openly carried in public.
You thoughts?
Outspoken1

I do not support open carry in urban/suburban areas. Here in Colorado, we had open carry (which was legal) and not conceal carry (which was illegal) in the 1960s-1970s. Some students from University of Colorado took to strolling down the 16th Street Mall (the mall you saw during the DNC) which is in the middle of downtown Denver playing "Cowboy." In fear someone would get hurt, open carry was outlawed in urban and suburban areas. I do support conceal carry in rural areas for snakes, cougars, and dog packs (all rare except rattlesnakes). By conceal carry, I mean a gun in a side-pocket of your backpack.
But it becomes really confusing in rural areas. There are different laws between open carry, conceal carry, and loaded weapon whether one is on National Forest, National Park, Wilderness area, Bureau of Land Management area, Colorado Park, Colorado Wilderness Area, Colorado Open Space, then other public lands that are regulated by national, state and/or local laws. I've never been able to get a clear answer about carrying a handgun for protection again attacking animals (or people - again, very rare) from hardly any land management official.
I also blame our media for not teaching gun responsibility versus macho-gun use. If you ever watch an old episode of 'The Rifleman' (yes, I am dating myself), the hero never used is gun unless it was a last resort. Now, guns come out the first 5 minutes of a TV show or movie. Then silly things like drywall walls or roof vents 'stop' bullets (NOT!) or when someone gets shot, they go 'Ow' and keep fighting (NOT!). A gun is soooo easy to use that people don't take time to teach gun safety to our kids and teens. My father taught me to shoot when I was 9-10 years old and I knew that I was not allowed to even touch the guns without him being around of I would get in great trouble. There is NO reason to have a loaded gun (cartridge in the chamber) in any home. My guns are unloaded, locked and ammo is kept in a separate place. I am always more worried about someone taking my gun (I am petite 5'2") and using it against me.
So, what do I suggest for personal defense. I use three things. 1. My intelligence - don't be out alone in a vacant area; park by a light; use friends for safety; keep you car doors and home doors locked at all times, etc. 2. I have a couple of baseball bats in my home. I can find my way in the dark-the intruder can't. 3. Pepper spray - the foam type. Learn how to use the pepper spray (I'd be happy to add that if anyone is interested). I also have dogs. I don't expect them to protect me - just wake me.
ComradeRutherford
"I am always more worried about someone taking my gun (I am petite 5'2") and using it against me."
Exactly!!! That's the reason my wife doesn't want any weapons around.
And that comes from hesitating. If you ever find yourself needing to defend yourself with a firearm, do not hesitate. The only defense against a ranged weapon is to run away or to close in. So if you have a gun and are faced with a 'evil doer', present and be ready to fire. To hesitate is to allow the 'evil doer' to close with you and then the firearm becomes useless, or worse, used against you.
"do I suggest for personal defense. I use three things. 1. My intelligence - don't be out alone in a vacant area; park by a light; use friends for safety"

I, too, and a gun-owner and a bluer than blue Dem all my life. Thanks for the clarification of terms. A lot of people need to know what the heck they are talking about. Otherwise, when Liberals talk about guns, they sound like Cons do when they told lies about Obama. My two cents? 1. If Obama were to, instead of banning guns and reinforcing the Right's ideas about us, if he were to at least standardize gun laws between states, or make a commitment to protecting legal and responsible gun ownership, it would take so much wind out of the Right's sails! It's a no-brainer. 2. Gun-owning Dems need to take their friends out shooting. 3. I'm not joining the NRA until the NRA stops with the dramatic slippery slope crap.

There is only one state in our Union that allows people to carry a concealed handgun legally without a permit. You may be shocked to find out which state that is, and in doing so, exactly how harmefull gun control legislation will be to the progrssive movement. Al Gore lost because he came out for federal regualtions... Obama campaigned on the Second Amendment being an individual protection. This subject, is poison if federally mandated, and a losing issue. Hopefully, Barack will keep true to his word, and not ban guns.

Gun control equals the pro life for the progressive agenda, only much worse.
The pro life movment has a large population of rabid supporters that vote on that single issue. It also alienates many more voters, especailly women, who vote on the issue.
The gun control movement has very few supporters that vote on the control side as a single issue, but many that vote against gun control as a single issue who would otherwise be sympathetic towards progressive causes.
Gun control is a big loser for our movement folks. Let's hope Obama does not fall for it, and maintains his position on the Constiutional right every American has to won a firearm... the Second Amendment. Please do not alientate those of us who support other causes, by going after our Second amendment rights.

"The Second Amendment Family Gun Shop?" You've got to be kidding me.
I'm all for gun ownership--I own one, myself. But nobody--nobody--has any business owning something that's not going to typically be used for hunting or basic protection. I do hope Obama brings back the ban on assault rifles. We have "the right to bear arms"--not the right to own things that can mow down massive amounts of people in mere seconds. Think Columbine.
Isn't it funny how quickly the right wingnuts will take away gays' basic protections for their familes--but scream bloody murder if they're not allowed to own a machine gun? Amazing, the priorities!
Now I used to shoot competitively and hunt and have a bunch of rifles and shotguns of various descriptions. But I'm not rushing out rushing out ahead of the 'gun grabbers.' Haha!

I started laughing again, and was getting up (former journalist that I am) to point out to this moron that the Fairness Doctrine dates back to the late 40s - not the early 90s.
As Mencken said, No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people.
the winger hate radio talkers are really inciting the dittoheads.... and with increased gun sales, that's just alarming...
limbaugh routinely lies and just gets away with it....
But, when you got companies like Clear Channel buying everything, you don't get much diversity of views.
That was interesting.
You thoughts?
I lived in NYC for almost 20 years and never once got mugged, by following these very rules. I simply never let anyone get within 50 feet of me at night on a deserted street...
Gosh, when do people start thinking? There is a clear reason that weapons belong into professional hands. And that Sarah Palin represents the 2. Amendment was one of the reasons why the world made fun of us. Besides that she hasn't proven to have a brain in a while: http://theworldspeaks.info/archives/165

Is it true the confiscated guns in NOLA after Katrina? Did Martial Law null and void this protection?

A whole bunch of stink in this story.
What the hell is someone doing teaching an 8 yr old how to kill?
Much like that other 8 year old who blew off his own head while learning to shoot an Uzi. That dad must also be soooooooOOOOOoooooOOOOOOoooooo proud that his kid wasn't a sissy and wasn't afraid of that big, noisy, powerful gun. Yep! He got to bury a real man, no worry that the kid would ever grow up to be a faggot. Daddy cried and cried and cried buckets of tears of joy.
Hey, show some respect for the Second Amendment! Kids love it!
.
I want both adults charged. Minors should not be permitted into guns shows--period. It's one thing for responsible adults to perhaps want a weapon for home protection, but these types of "gun shows" are getting out of control and playing on abject fear.
Your daughter is obviously under the spell of a total nut..so sorry about that.
they're afraid of more than that.
