Delta CEO says 15 percent fare hike needed for US carriers to offset soaring fuel prices

Delta Air Lines Inc. CEO Richard Anderson said today that, given current fuel prices, domestic carriers would need to raise fares by 15 percent to 20 percent just to break even.

WASHINGTON - Domestic airlines need to raise fares by 15 percent to 20 percent just to break even at current fuel prices, the chief executive of Delta Air Lines, which seeks to acquire Northwest Airlines, said Tuesday.

"An airline ticket has got to reflect the full cost of fuel," Delta Air Lines Inc. CEO Richard Anderson told reporters, adding that such an increase was likely to depress demand and prompt carriers to further trim their flight schedules.

As much as I hate to say (or even think about it), gas will have to hit $10-$12 a gallon before most people will wake up and really get with the program to pressure the politicians and big biz to pass regs and start building the infrastructure (nationwide) for alternative energy sources and for massive public trans. initiative. BRING BACK the TRAINS....

Thank you George W. I just figured at $3.50 a gallon my $600 tax rebate will fill my tank for less than 8 weeks.

didn't we illegally invade a sovereign nation to avoid this sort of thing?

if only there was some kind of alternative fuel that could be used.

i admit, i am short sighted. need someone in the 28%, someone who can look way down that road and see that W's war will exonerated.

Sure makes Ronald Reagan look even more foolish for taking off the solar panels that Jimmy Carter put on the roof of The White House.

Remember when people were panicking over the idea of gas hitting $100 a barrel? We are now close to 20% over that and its not even the summer! Where is the outrage?

I can hardly wait to see Chevron's profits this quarter!

I saw a documentary about a year or so ago on alternative energy, and in it, they talked about big oil, and how dependent on it we have become. In one segment, they interviewed henry kissenger about his "negotiations" with the saudis in the 1970s after they lead opec in cutting back on production and causing our energy crisis then.. He basically told them in diplomatic jargon to either increase production and lower prices (that they could do it a way which would save face, if they chose), or the u.s. would invade them and take control of all the oil fields. I can see us doing the same thing again, only with much less diplomacy than we did in the 70's.

I'm still not convinced that this is primarily due to the weakening of the dollar, and I don't think we can afford to ignore or rule out the possibility that at least some of what we're seeing may be the first indications that we're heading into a Peak Oil crisis as a result of the world reaching the Hubbert Peak of production. The fact that Russia is producing less oil would seem to lend as least some credibility to that idea. Peak Oil, after all, doesn't mean that the world is almost out of oil. It simply means that the oil fields are no longer yielding as much as before and that more effort has to be put into extracting it, meaning that succeeding barrels become more expensive than those which preceded it. The increase in demand from countries such as China and India also cut into this -- because if and when demand begins to outpace the capacity to supply, the price naturally begins to go up.

Time to explore decentralized solar energy. All you need is solar panals on each house specialized batteries in the basement. Specialized water tank that can keep water hot for extrmrly long periods. All istalled in or on each building within the US. All solar panels on individual buildings are connected to a grid.

Actually, oil futures passed $120/bbl today; I saw this myself on CNBC's roll of the stock indices, precious metals and energy prices. That was about noon today.

$4/gal by Memorial Day as was predicted two months ago by an oil analyst.. They know exactly what they're doing, all these oil creatures.

Gee, I seem to remember that we (along with other central banks) PROPPED UP the goddamn Euro in 1998 when it sank to much less a degree than our dear dollar.

And WHERE might the reciprocity be? Oh yeah, I know: Bush pissed all the goodwill towards us away, so now we sink in our own cesspool. And what help have we, Average Joe Voter, got now?

God love the banking industry - fucking the little guy over since Day One!

Economists have predicted that it will take gasoline prices of 10 to 15 dollars per gallon before politicians will allow building of nuke plants, drilling in off limit areas and building new refineries. We own the solution. The politicians are to blame for screwing up the energy industry.
