AMERICAblog: Olympics Opening Ceremony

  • Bobby · 1 year ago
    Where is everybody?

    Come on people, let's blog!
  • martha · 1 year ago
I guess I can't get excited about druggy athletes and hyped up phony stories of poor athletes that are really making tons of money, when we now have proof that our government lied us into a war and kids the same age as the athletes died for lies. Sorry, the Olympics are so lame, especially when you see Bush with Putin.

    Hellboy is on TV.
  • Bobby · 1 year ago
Bush's stupid fucking ugly face was on during the Olympics! Why isn't this monster in prison?!
  • loona_c · 1 year ago
Say what you want about totalitarian regimes--they've got great choreography at these kind of events!
  • Bobby · 1 year ago
We have a totalitarian regime too....where's our entertainment?

Oh wait, we have American Idol.

    Never mind.
  • loona_c · 1 year ago
    LOL. Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders?

One thing I love about the opening ceremony is all the athletes with their own cameras (at one time it was SLRs, now it's digital movie cams). Most all of these kids are just that: kids. They're dedicated to their sport, but they're still teenagers or 20-somethings and I get a kick out of their being on the world stage finally and as or more impressed with that stage than themselves. Good for them and their enthusiasm, I say.

And the gymnastic boys are seriously hot, regardless of country. Reason alone to watch.

The ceremony itself was really beautiful and stunning to the eye in HD.
I have many Chinese friends and I am happy and proud for the people of this most ancient civilization.
That said, NBC's narration by semi-prettyboy Matt Laur and aged not-even-pretty Bob Costas was horrible...Surprised execs didn't jam Luke Russert into the booth.
I also saw one terrific shot of Dubya and Pickles shortly after Iraq was the focus of the Parade of Nations. The First Couple looked bored shitless...Both looked at their watches, ala HW at his debate, and Pickles had her don't come near me look. Mayby its because the bubble was double-parked outside The Birdnest or maybe both got nervous sitting so near ordinary world leaders...
President Obama can't happen soon enough!!!
  • DAB · 1 year ago
Much as I enjoy the opening ceremony, how much cooler would this be with a President Obama in the stands with First Lady Michelle Obama, cheering on the US's and world's athletes? The next summer Olympics is in 2012. He should be ending his first time at that point, and it should be a very different world, God willing.
  • bdhp · 1 year ago
Yes, but did you see him use the Flag as a fan? He looked bored and used the flag to fan himself. What if Barak did that?
  • SusanS · 1 year ago
And, I have seen two John McCain ads -- both negative against Obama -- already. None for Obama yet.

    Post partisan?

I had a lot of conflicting feelings watching those ceremonies. I was glad for China, because this is clearly a great moment for their country, and they put on a show that beat all expectations. I liked the fact that it wasn't bombastic and militant. It was artful and sophisticated and appealed to our higher sensibilities-- much better than seeing Michael Jackson scratch his crotch at our Superbowl games. I sort of felt like China made a huge statement tonight-- they are a nation on the upswing, and we're floundering badly. I'm sort of envious. Watching our idiot-in-chief sit there with that nasty smirk on his face was nearly unbearable.

lost power here for 4 hours tonight.
saw the entry, US to China. that's about it.

    recommend: What is the What
  • shanobama · 1 year ago
Yea, I saw the liars ad. McCain lying blatantly about Obama.

I could not help but think, when they formed the 'birds nest' during the show-
that it was a giant "O" for Mr. Obama.

Bush looks like he is bored out of his mind. Smirk and all.
    what an ass.
  • Charel · 1 year ago
I can't help noticing the comment on the ads. Maybe, to make you envious, I could watch the whole ceremony on any of 4 networks without any ads or talking heads showing their faces.
But then, I live in Europe.
  • hawkseye · 1 year ago
Lucky you. And you don't have Chimpy for your leader.
  • hawkseye · 1 year ago
I hope Obama's ads are positive.
  • Bostonian_Queer_in_Dallas · 1 year ago
We are not watching any of it this year. The IOC gave China this dog and pony show so Walmart can have cheap labor for all the crap we are forced to buy there. It all comes down to money. Money the root of all evil seems truer than ever now.
  • OneManComotion · 1 year ago
Truly a magnificant event on a scale never seen before. But, what was with the commercials. They came every three minutes it seemed. Truly took away from the evening. Why can't they sell fewer ads for more money? You'll still make your billion and we won't have to suffer.

The Han today: strong on Feng-shui, weak on human rights, racist at best.

It was sick seeing the white Robert Mugabe's there- Bush and Putin

One thing I love about the opening ceremony is all the athletes with their own cameras (at one time it was SLRs, now it's digital movie cams).

I hate to burst your bubble, but, if you watched it in hi-def and you were a photography and video buff, you would have noticed that all (or practically all) of the cameras were from Sony. Methinks Sony gave them to the athletes for publicity.

I loved the opening ceremony. It was art, layered and deep. Who knew?

"They should have been talking about the war Russia started with Georgia today."

Actually it looks like the Georgians started it, with training, arms, support and active encouragement from the United States. Certainly the initial attack was Georgian. I suspect the US is trying to start another war, this one with Russia, probably with their eye on their oil and gas. Pretty hard to believe that the Georgians would do this without permission from their American masters.
