There is absolutely no reason for the current energy crisis when the US for what ever reasons had the oil companies on the North Slope offAlaska back in the 70's, cap off exisiting oil wells that hold more oil than all of Saudi Arabia that could if necessary keep the entire country going for the next 200 years. All ready discovered , drilled and capped off by the powers to be under the cloak of national security? How about plain old greed?
I understand that if Bernanke would just raise interest rates, speculation in oil and commodities would end and the dollar would rise. What do others think about this?

Probably true enough. It would also effectively freeze prices. The Mexican government did exactly that about a month ago on the theory that the price schedules are going through a readjustment.

WHY CAN'T THEY FREEZE PRICES ON OIL? ALL I KNOW THAT MANY PEOPLE MAKING LESS THAN $50,000.00 ARE HAVING HARD TIMES. WE WORK HARD AND WE HAVEN'T GONE OUT PLACES AND DON'T DRIVE AROUND TO MUCH. Bullshit. There is not enough oil in North America or offshore to "keep America going for 200 years". You are reading lies being put out by people who have no clue what is going on. The "peak oil" theory if very much real and is based on geological facts. The United States reached peak oil production in the early 70s.

Those were "corehole or "test" wells, Andrew. The majors, especially ARCO, found huge reserves that couldn't be exploited after Carter declared the area "off-limits". Russia is now trying to claim most of the north pole 'under ice' acreage because recent studies have shown that in the past, when global temps were warmer, geologic formations were laid down which may contain incredible amounts of oil. Russia has military operations ongoing to try and solidify their claim.

McCain's plan will lead to the rich getting richer and the working class getting poorer. McCain wants to lower taxes for business, which I am in favor of, but he does not want to close the loopholes that allow businesses to pay little or no taxes.
McCain wants businesses to do away with health care plans. Then the insurance companies can pick and choose who they want to insure, while others will either have no insurance or pay ridiculous prices.
McCain's business plans will actually allow more jobs to go overseas. John McCain and most of the Republicans are beholden to big business. If you think he cares about the average person, you are kidding yourself. His job is to make the fat cats fatter. While he has come out about CEO pay, that was a one time off. Suddenly he is the champion of petrol companies, just like his buddy Bush.
Obama is not an ideal candidate either. But I would rather vote for someone who believes in our society than someone who wants an every man for himself mentality and that we can live in 1787 today.
McCain is not progressive and the comparison to Teddy Roosevelt is completely off base. Roosevelt believed that companies should be controlled and that the average person should be above the businesses, which is completely opposite to McCain's and the Republican Party's position.

Hey Busboy, now I see who you are and what you are going for. I, too, am a Green Engineering type of person. WE cannot leave oil without first replacing the gas taxes and other fuel taxes. It's possible that global pricing is going through a complete readjustment. The price of gold is about to stabilize at the 850-925 USD level. That effectively revalues the dollar at half its pre-Iraq invasion level, the new value for the foreseeable future. That changes everything and the dollar levels off at its new value: 1€ = $1.50-1.57 That's how the price of oil is being reset at around $150.00. The price of oil is really 100€ and that's the new standardized values. Isn't that clever? We should be so smart.

Guess again Indigo. Gold is sitting at $932 and heading for $1,200 then $1,650 and beyond. You can't print your way out of the triple deficits we currently face and the dollars strangle hold on the rest of the world as its reserve currency is fading fast. We have become a service society rather than a society that produces anything of meaningful value. High tech jobs keep getting sourced out off shore and our rust belt isn't even worth the cost of scrap metal. We as a country have to do two things before we can regain our former status. first, get rid of the Federal Reserve, go back to a treasury banking system and back the dollar with something of value like gold and silver which got Kennedy into trouble. Second. We have to get inventive again so that we can rebuild our basic industries along with new industries that can get a foot hold in emerging technologies like alternative energy. Rather than building bombs and guns, our industrial complex should be deep into R & D in finding new sources of clean energy. If the Japanese can build a car that runs on nothing other than water and gets 80 miles to a quart, then why can't we?
So many issues! Here's one to reconsider: "We as a country have to do two things before we can regain our former status" I respect your point but there's one thing you haven't looked at: we're not going to "regain our former status" because 1. we have a "service" [read: lazy] economy and 2. we haven't got the brain power to do those things anymore and 3. we haven't got an educational system to support that kind of thinking and 4. the voting public doesn't understand that there's a problem.

Oil spiking for a few reasons. Greedy speculators trading in essential items (food, oil) to rebuild balance sheets shot to hell by the credit disaster. Outrageous sabre rattling by a certain vicious little Mid-Eastern country against a neighboring oil producer, and most of all, a completely debased and devalued US dollar still functioning, unfortunately, as a global reserve currency for settling international trade in oil contracts. No good blaming OPEC this time.

We as a country have to do two things before we can regain our former
status. first, get rid of the Federal Reserve, go back to a treasury banking system and back the dollar with something of value like gold and silver
which got Kennedy into trouble. Second. We have to get inventive again so
that we can rebuild our basic industries along with new industries that can get a foot hold in emerging technologies like alternative energy. Rather than building bombs and guns, our industrial complex should be deep into R & D in finding new sources of clean energy.
If the Japanese can build a car that runs on nothing other than water and gets 80 miles to a quart, then why can't we?
